Meghan Markle has snuck into New York City for an ultra-exclusive, top-secret baby shower
with her closest friends.
According to Harper's Bazaar, sources have revealed that the Duchess of Sussex, who is
seven-months pregnant, flew into the Big Apple last Friday for a five-night break and lavish
private baby shower with some of her closest friends.
The party will take place on Tuesday at a hotel on the Upper East Side with 20 of Meghan's
close friends, and has been arranged by her BFF, stylist Jessica Mulroney, reports Page
Six.
"The trip is a lovely chance to catch up with friends and spend time in a city she
loves," explained a source close to the duchess.
"This will be the last time a lot of them will see Meg until after the baby is born
so it's nice to share precious moments."
The source added that the trip was planned months ago, and that it's been a "relaxing"
visit.
Meghan and her best friend, Jessica Mulroney, were spotted in a private space at swanky
bakery Ladurée in the SoHo district on Saturday, where they shared macarons and tea.
Just before her trip to New York, Meghan enjoyed a quiet Valentine's Day with her husband
at their cottage within Kensington Palace.
However her February 14 are markedly different to the plans she described as the perfect
Valentine's in NYC on her lifestyle blog The Tig.
In a February 16, Meghan wrote: "This Valentine's Day I will be with friends, running amok through
the streets of New York, likely imbibing some cocktail that's oddly pink, and jumping
over icy mounds in my new shoes through the salted snowy streets of the West Village."
There is no royal protocol stopping Meghan's friends and family hosting a baby shower as
a celebratory event rather than to shower the duchess with gifts.
Marlene Koenig, a royal expert, said: "I would not be surprised if the Duchess of Sussex's
American and Canadian friends might do something and throw her a shower, thus maintaining the
North American tradition.
"In fact, there is nothing stopping them from hosting a shower."
Baby showers have soared in popularity since the 50s and 60s and are a way to 'shower'
expectant mothers with gifts for the baby and furnishings for a nursery.
However Royal expert Victoria Arbiter has previously told the Sun a baby shower could
be seen as "highly inappropriate."
Meghan Markle's rift with her father Thomas Markle will "get worse" after she gives
birth, a royal biographer has warned.
Andrew Morton, author of Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, believes the birth of the royal
baby is bound to draw a "public lament" from her estranged dad.
"There is the little matter of baby Sussex arriving in April," Morton wrote in Britain's
The Telegraph.
"Amid the joy and lament will be a public lament from Meghan's father wondering if
he will ever be allowed to see the child."
Her 74-year-old dad revealed he was "very sad" over the pair's turbulent relationship
that saw him release a letter the Duchess of Sussex wrote him, begging him to stop "victimising"
her.
Meanwhile, Meghan has made an unannounced trip to New York City.
The 37-year-old, who is in her third trimester and expected to give birth in April, is in
town to celebrate her pregnancy, the New York Post reports.
A baby shower for the actor-turned-royal will take place on Tuesday local time.
Meghan's best friend and stylist, Jessica Mulroney, is also in town to shower the mum-to-be.
The exclusive party will reportedly take place at a hotel on the Upper East Side with Mulroney
taking charge of co-ordinating everything.
