Waching daily Feb 21 2019

(*)

>> Rosemary: ON THIS WEDNESDAY

NIGHT A DRAMATIC DAY IN THE

COMMONS.

>> I HOPE I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY

TO SPEAK MY TRUTH.

>> Rosemary: BUT WHAT WILL THE

FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL REALLY

BE ABLE TO REVEAL?

AND WILL THE GOVERNMENT OR THE

LAW LET HER SAY IT?

(*)

>> I KNOW THAT EVERYONE IS

MOURNING, IT'S SEVEN BEAUTIFUL

AUTHENTIC SOULS.

>> Ian: NOVA SCOTIA UNITED IN

GRIEF FOR A FAMILY FACING

UNIMAGINABLE TRAGEDY.

SEVEN CHILDREN WERE KILLED IN A

FIRE.

A MOVING TRIBUTE FROM A FAMILY

FRIEND.

>> I THINK THERE'S A LOT OF

MISINFORMATION BUT NOW THAT I

KNOW MORE ABOUT VACCINES

PERSONALLY I WANT TO HELP PEOPLE

TO UNDERSTAND THAT THEY'RE NOT

DANGEROUS.

>> Andrew: AS B.C. FIGHTS A

MEASLES OUTBREAK, KIDS ARE

SCHOOLING THEIR PARENTS ABOUT

VACCINES AND THEY'RE GETTING THE

SHOTS ON THEIR OWN.

>>> THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."

(*)

(*)

>> Rosemary: THE FEDERAL

LIBERALS WERE TRYING THEIR BEST

TO PUT THE SNC-LAVALIN

CONTROVERSY BEHIND THEM -- A

PUBLIC APOLOGY FROM THE PRIME

MINISTER, MESSAGES OF UNITY.

THAT IS UNTIL JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD MADE A PUBLIC

STATEMENT ON HER OWN.

HER UNEXPECTED COMMENTS IN THE

HOUSE, YET

ANOTHER TWIST FOR THE GOVERNMENT

ALREADY STRUGGLING WITH

ANONYMOUS ALLEGATIONS OF

POLITICAL INTERFERENCE BY THE

PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE.

TONIGHT DAVID COCHRANE TAKES US

BEHIND THE SCENES ON HOW THE

PRIME MINISTER IS MANAGING AN

EVOLVING POLITICAL CRISIS.

>> Reporter: THE CRACKS IN THE

LIBERAL CAUCUS HAVE BEEN VISIBLE

EVER SINCE THE SNC-LAVALIN STORY

BROKE.

>> I AM GOING TO ATTEND CAUCUS

AS I ALWAYS DO AND WE'LL SEE HOW

THE CONVERSATION GOES.

>> Reporter: SO EVERYONE MET

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE AND

TRIED TO PUT HUMPTY-DUMPTY

TOGETHER AGAIN.

>> Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau: I APOLOGISE TO JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD BECAUSE I WASN'T

QUICK ENOUGH TO CONDEMN IN

UNEQUIVOCAL TERMS THE COMMENTS

AND THE COMMENTARY AND CARTOONS

MADE ABOUT HER LAST WEEK.

THEY WERE ABSOLUTELY

UNACCEPTABLE AND I SHOULD HAVE

DONE IT SOONER.

>> Reporter: CAUCUS SOURCES

SAY THAT TRUDEAU ALSO CONCEDED

TO HIS M.P.s THAT HE HAS NOT

HANDLED THIS CONTROVERSY

PERFECTLY AND APOLOGISED THAT

M.P.s HAVE BEEN LEFT IN THE

DARK.

MULTIPLE SOURCES SAY THAT THE

CAUCUS MEETING WAS LARGELY A

CALL FOR UNITY, INCLUDING FROM

JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD.

SOURCES SAY THAT DESPITE

EVERYTHING WILSON-RAYBOULD

REASSURED M.P.s THAT SHE WAS

ON THE LIBERAL TEAM AND

SUPPORTED THE LIBERAL AGENDA.

MANY MINISTERS AND M.P.s

EMERGED TO SPEED WALK PAST

REPORTERS BUT THOSE WHO SPOKE

SANG A POSITIVE TUNE.

>> A LOT OF IT HAS BEEN

STRAIGHTFORWARD DISCUSSIONS.

>> JODY IS A GREAT PERSON.

>> Reporter: BUT AS THE DAY

WORE ON THOSE CRACKS STARTED TO

REEMERGE.

>> MR. ERSKIN-SMITH.

>> MR. ERSKIN-SMITH.

>> MR. LONG.

>> MR. LONG.

>> Reporter: TWO LIBERAL

SMITH, WHO HAVE A HISTORY OF

BREAKING RANKS

VOTED WITH THE OPPOSITION IN AN

UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO FORCE A

PUBLIC INQUIRY.

>> (Speaker of the House): A

POINT OF ORDER.

>> Reporter: ALSO THIS

HAPPENED...

>> I WOULD ASK THAT THE RECORD

SHOW THAT I HAVE ABSTAINED FROM

VOTING ON THAT MATTER...

>> Reporter: SHE SAID SHE

DIDN'T VOTE BECAUSE THE MOTION

AFFECTED HER DIRECTLY.

SHE CONSIDERS THAT A CONFLICT.

>> I UNDERSTAND FULLY THAT

CANADIANS WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH

AND WANT TRANSPARENCY.

PRIVILEGE AND CONFIDENTIALITY

ARE NOT MINE TO WAIVE AND I HOPE

THAT I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO

SPEAK MY TRUTH.

[Applause]

>> Reporter: JUST HOURS AFTER

SHE HAD PLEDGED LOYALTY SHE

BROUGHT THE OPPOSITION TO ITS

FEET.

AS TO WHAT HER "TRUTH" IS, THAT

WILL HAVE TO WAIT.

>> Question: WHAT DO YOU MEAN --

>> I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING FURTHER

TO SAY, THANK YOU.

>> Rosemary: OKAY, DAVID, DO

WE HAVE A SENSE OF HOW THE

LIBERALS ARE FEELING TODAY AFTER

ANOTHER EVENTFUL ONE ON THE HILL

HILL?

>> Reporter: WELL, I HAVE TO

TELL YOU THAT AFTER THE CAUCUS

MEETING THE LIBERALS THAT I

SPOKE WITH WERE FEELY PRETTY

GOOD ABOUT THE FACT THAT JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD THERE WAS AND

SHE WAS SPEAKING ABOUT TEAM

UNITY.

BUT THEY ALSO EXPRESSED A

MEASURE OF CONCERN THAT THEY

JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHAT SHE WAS

GOING OR DO TO SAY NEXT AND THEN

THE ABSTENTION IN THE HOUSE OF

COMMONS VOTE.

IT'S PRETTY CLEAR THAT THERE'S

AN ATTEMPT TO SMOOTH

THINGS OVER, WE SAW THAT WITH

THE PRIME MINISTER'S APOLOGY,

BUT THERE'S PUBLIC SIGNS THAT

THINGS AREN'T GOING SO WELL AND

ALSO PRIVATE SIGNS TOO.

>> Rosemary: OKAY, WE DON'T

OBVIOUSLY HEAR WHAT HAPPENS

INSIDE OF CABINET MEETINGS

BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE DANGEROUS

AND ILLEGAL.

BUT WE HAVE, IN SPITE OF ALL OF

THAT, LEARNED SOME DETAILS ABOUT

WHEN JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD MADE

THAT SURPRISE APPEARANCE THERE

YESTERDAY?

>> Reporter: YEAH, WE KNOW

THAT CABINET RAN EXTRA LONG

YESTERDAY AND PART IS BECAUSE

JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD WAITED FOR

TWO HOURS OUTSIDE OF THE CABINET

ROOM WHILE HER COLLEAGUES

DEBATED WHETHER OR NOT TO LET

HER IN.

WE HAVE MULTIPLE SOURCES TELLING

US THAT THERE WAS DEEP

CONCERN OF LETTING HER WALK IN

CABINET A WEEK AFTER SHE WALKED

OUT OF CABINET.

AND THE PRIME MINISTER FINALLY

AGREED.

WE DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD SAID BECAUSE OF

THAT CABINET CONFIDENCE BOUGHT

WE WERE TOLD THAT SHE WAS

UNAPOLOGETIC.

AND WE SAW THAT TODAY, ROSIE,

WHAT WILL SHE SAY WHEN SHE

TESTIFIES AT THAT HOUSE OF

COMMONS JUSTICE COMMITTEE.

>> Rosemary: DAVID COCHRANE ON

THIS STORY AGAIN FOR US TONIGHT

IN OTTAWA,

THANK YOU.

>> Reporter: THANK YOU.

>> Rosemary: WILSON-RAYBOULD

WAS CLEAR THAT SHE WANTS TO TELL

HER STORY BUT WHAT IS DECIDEDLY

LESS CLEAR IS WHETHER THE

LIBERAL GOVERNMENT OR THE LAW

WILL LET HER TO DO THAT.

SALIMAH SHIVJI EXPLAINS WHY.

>> Reporter: WILL SHE SPEAK OR

WON'T SHE?

THAT'S THE QUESTION THAT

EVERYONE HAS BEEN TRYING TO

ANSWER.

JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD IS CHIEF

AMONG THEM.

>> I AM SEEKING COUNSEL ON THIS

MATTER ON WHAT I CAN AND CANNOT

SAY.

I UNDERSTAND FULLY THAT

CANADIANS WANT

TO KNOW THE TRUTH AND WANT

TRANSPARENCY.

>> Reporter: SHE MAY WANT TO

SPEAK OUT BUT A COUPLE OF THINGS

STAND IN HER WAY.

LET'S START WITH

SOLICITOR-CLIENT PRIVILEGE.

IT'S A CORE ETHICAL STANDARD FOR

LAWYERS.

YOU DON'T REVEAL WHAT YOU TALK

ABOUT WITH A CLIENT.

AS ATTORNEY GENERAL SHE WAS THE

GOVERNMENT'S LAWYER AND THE

GOVERNMENT HER CLIENT.

>> SO THE GOVERNMENT IS SEEKING

LEGAL ADVICE FROM THE ATTORNEY

GENERAL AND SHE PROVIDES THAT

ADVICE AND THEN THE GOVERNMENT

IS ENTITLED TO TREAT THAT AS A

PRIVILEGED COMMUNICATION.

>> Reporter: EVEN IN THE FACE

OF GROWING CALLS FROM THE

OPPOSITION.

>> WILL HE WAIVE

SOLICITOR-CLIENT PRIVILEGE.

>> WAIVE ANY PURPORTED

SOLICITOR-CLIENT PRIVILEGE.

>> LET HER SPEAK.

>> Reporter: WHAT IF LEGAL

ADVICE WASN'T THE HEART OF THE

CONVERSATION?

THEN IT GETS COMPLICATED BECAUSE

--

>> THE ATTORNEY GENERAL WEARS

TWO HATS.

>> Reporter: ATTORNEY GENERAL

AND JUSTICE MINISTER.

>> Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau: WHICH IS WHERE THE

CABINET CONFIDENTIALITY KICKS

IN.

>> Reporter: ANYTHING THAT IS

SAID AROUND THIS TABLE OR

BETWEEN THE MINISTERS ANYWHERE

IS A NO-GO ZONE, KEPT SECRET SO

THAT MINISTERS ARE FREE TO

DEBATE.

>> THE PRIME MINISTER COULD

WAIVE CABINET CONFIDENCE IN THIS

CASE AND THERE IS POSSIBLY A

RISK THAT IT WOULD BE WAIVED IN

OTHER CASES OR THAT CALLS TO

WAIVE CABINET CONFIDENCE WOULD

WIDEN TO A LARGER DEGREE IN

CASES.

>> Reporter: BUT EXPERTS SAY

THAT THERE IS A WAY SHE CAN

SPEAK OUT NOW.

>> I AM A LIBERAL MEMBER OF

PARLIAMENT, THANK YOU.

>> Reporter: SHE'S PROTECTED

BY PARLIAMENTARY PRIVILEGE SO

SHE HAS THE RIGHT TO STAND UP IN

THE HOUSE AND SAY, WELL, ALMOST

ANYTHING WITHOUT BEING SUED.

THAT IS, IF SHE WANTS TO.

>> I THINK THAT IT'S FAIR TO SAY

THAT SHE WOULD BE ACTING

CONTRARY TO HER ROLE AS A MEMBER

OF

THE LIBERAL CAUCUS INVITING

QUITE A BIT OF CONTROVERSY.

>> Reporter: AND VIOLATING

LEGAL ETHICS, A RISK THAT SHE

MIGHT NOT BE WILLING TO TAKE.

SO WILSON-RAYBOULD IS LOOKING TO

A FORMER SUPREME COURT JUSTICE

FOR ADVICE.

SO THE WAIT CONTINUES.

SALIMAH SHIVJI, CBC NEWS,

OTTAWA.

>> Rosemary: AFTER THAT

DRAMATIC DAY ON PARLIAMENT HILL,

THE PRIME MINISTER TRAVELLED TO

HALIFAX WHERE HE HAD A PLANNED

LIBERAL PARTY FUNDRAISER.

>> Ian: AHEAD OF THAT EVENT,

ROSIE, JUSTIN TRUDEAU JOINED IN

A SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR THOSE

SEVEN

CHILDREN KILLED IN A HOUSE FIRE

YESTERDAY.

[BELLS TOLLING]

>> THINKING ABOUT THE KIDS FROM

THAT FIRE.

[indiscernible]

>> BEING A COMMUNITY ALL

TOGETHER AND HELPING EACH OTHER

OUT NO MATTER WHAT RACE OR

COLOUR OR ORIGIN.

WE'RE ALL HUMANS AND WE HAVE TO

BE THERE FOR EACH OTHER.

>> Ian: YOU CAN SEE AND HEAR THE

EMOTION THERE TONIGHT.

THE VIGIL WAS HELD IN HALIFAX'S

MAIN SQUARE.

IT'S ORGANIZED TO GIVE THE

COMMUNITY A PLACE TO UNITE FOR

THE BARHO FAMILY THAT CAME FROM

SYRIA JUST OVER A YEAR AGO.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU WERE THERE AS

WERE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE.

THEIR LOST IS FELT IN ELMSDALE A

SMALL COMMUNITY NEAR HALIFAX

THAT THE

BARHO FAMILY CALLED HOME UNTIL A

FEW MONTHS AGO.

AS BRETT CUS KIN SHOWS US,

THE PAIN THERE TODAY RUNS DEEP.

>> THEY WERE VERY MUCH A LOVED

FAMILY HERE.

>> Reporter: FOR THE BARHO

FAMILY, ELMSDALE WAS A REFUGE IN

CANADA.

IT'S A QUIET, TIGHT KNIT

COMMUNITY.

THEY MET DANIELLE WHEN THEY

WALKED INTO THE CONVENIENCE

STORE WHERE SHE WORKS AND THEY

BECAME FRIENDS.

>> THEY CAME TO FIGHT FOR AND I

JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY ALL

SEASON LIVES AND WHAT THEY'RE

LEFT WITH.

>> Reporter: THE TOWN'S

SADNESS IS NOW ON FULL DISPLAY.

>> I HAVE FOUR OF MY OWN

CHILDREN AND I COULD NOT IMAGINE

LOSING ALL SEVEN CHILDREN.

>> Reporter: THIS FAMILY'S NEW

LIFE IN CANADA WAS CUT SHORT

HERE.

LAST SUMMER THEY MOVED FROM

ELMSDALE TO THIS HOUSE IN

HALIFAX TO BE CLOSER TO THE

LARGER SYRIAN COMMUNITY.

EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING IT WAS

AN INFERNO, CLAIMING THE LIVES

OF ALL SEVEN OF THE

FAMILY'S CHILDREN.

THE FAMILY HAS SERIOUS BURNS AND

IS NOW IN A MEDICALLY INDUCED

COMA.

THE MOTHER HAS FEW PHYSICAL

INJURIES BUT HAS BEEN CALLING

OUT THE NAMES OF HER CHILDREN

FROM HER HOSPITAL BED.

>> I KNOW THAT EVERYONE IS

MOURNING, SEVEN BEAUTIFUL

AUTHENTIC SOULS REALLY.

AS A MOTHER HAVING SPENT TIME

WITH THAT FAMILY, IT HAS TAUGHT

ME A GREAT DEAL

ABOUT MYSELF AND MY OWN

PARENTING, PARENTING WAYS,

BECAUSE THEY WERE AN EXTREMELY

CLOSE KNIT AND WELL-RESPECTED

CHILDREN THAT HELPED EACH OTHER.

A LITTLE DIFFERENT IN OUR

CULTURE WHERE WE AREN'T SO MUCH

LIKE THAT.

SO IT WAS VERY BEAUTIFUL TO SEE

AND TO BE AROUND.

WHICH MADE ME WANT TO DO BETTER

THAT WAY.

>> Reporter: SHE'S LEFT WITH

QUESTIONS JUST LIKE EVERYONE

ELSE.

WHERE DID THE FIRE START, HOW

DID IT SPREAD, WHY COULDN'T THE

KIDS GET OUT?

ALL PART OF AN INVESTIGATION

THAT CONTINUED TODAY.

WHAT SHE DOES HAVE THOUGH IS A

NEW OUTLOOK IN THE AFTERMATH OF

THIS HEARTBREAK.

>> DON'T TAKE YOUR LIFE FOR

GRANTED.

HUG YOUR CHILDREN TIGHTER.

SAY YOU'RE SORRY.

DO YOUR BEST.

BECAUSE IF ANYTHING THAT I

LEARNED THROUGH THEM IS FAMILY

IS UNITY.

IT IS EVERYTHING.

THAT'S ONE THING THEY HAD RIGHT.

THAT'S ONE THING THEY WILL CARRY

ON WITH ME.

>> Reporter: BRETT RUSKIN, CBC

NEWS, HALIFAX.

>> Ian: ACROSS THIS COUNTRY AND

AS FAR AWAY AS JAPAN, CANADIANS

ARE EXPRESSING SYMPATHY IN

ANOTHER WAY TOO, PLACING STUFFED

ANIMALS ON THEIR STEPS AND IN

THEIR WINDOWS.

>> I DECIDED TO LEAVE STUFFED

ANIMALS OUTSIDE ON MY FRONT

PORCH IN SUPPORT AND SOLIDARITY.

THOSE CHILDREN HAD DREAMS AND

GOALS AND THEY HAD THEIR WHOLE

LIVES AHEAD OF THEM.

>> SO I JUST WANTED TO SHOW MY

SUPPORT AND, YOU KNOW, LET

EVERYONE KNOW THAT IT'S NOT JUST

A COMMUNITY, IT'S A GLOBAL

COMMUNITY.

>> I DO AGREE.

>> BEING ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO

WITNESSED THE FIRE A COUPLE

NIGHTS AGO, I AM DEEPLY

IMPACTED.

I SURELY BELIEVE THAT AS A

NATION THAT WE'RE ALL HURTING

FOR THIS DEAR FAMILY THAT WE

LOST IN CANADA.

>> HUG YOUR KIDS WHEN YOU GO TO

BED.

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN.

CHERISH EVERY SINGLE MOMENT THAT

YOU HAVE WITH THEM.

>> I JUST PRAY THAT WE FIND

HEALING AND WE FIND PEACE.

>> Ian: AN ONLINE FUNDRAISING

CAMPAIGN FOR THE BARHO FAMILY

HAS RAISED MORE THAN $390,000

FROM MORE THAN 8,000 DOPERS.

>> Rosemary: NOW TO A MAJOR

DEVELOPMENT IN THE STRANGE SAGA

OF JUSSIE SMOLLETT WHO WAS THE

ACCUSER AND TONIGHT STANDS

ACCUSED.

CHICAGO POLICE HAVE CHARGED

SMOLLETT, ALLEGING THAT HE

ORCHESTRATED THAT STRANGE RACIST

AND

HOMOPHOBIC ATTACK ON HIMSELF.

KIM BRUNHUBER HAS THE

DEVELOPMENTS.

>> Reporter: FOR MANY WHO

HEARD JUSSIE SMOLLETT'S ACCOUNTS

OF A HORRIFIC ACCOUNT IT WOULD

NOT HAVE OCCURRED TO THEM THAT

IT MIGHT NOT BE TRUE.

AFTER ALL, WHY A STAR OF A HIT

TV

SHOW MAKE UP THE STORY OF BEING

VIOLENTLY ASSAULTED BY TWO

HOMOPHOBIC RACISTS?

BUT THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT POLICE

ARE NOW

ALLEGING.

LATE AFTERNOON IN A TWEET,

CHICAGO POLICE ANNOUNCED THAT

JUSSIE SMOLLETT IS NOW

OFFICIALLY CLASSIFIED AS A

SUSPECT IN A CRIMINAL

INVESTIGATION.

ON JANUARY 29th, SMOLLETT WHO

IS BLACK AND GAY, SAID THAT HE

WAS ATTACKED BY TWO MASKED MEN

AS HE WAS WALKING HOME FROM THE

SUBWAY SANDWICH SHOP IN DOWNTOWN

CHICAGO.

HE SAID THAT THE MEN BEAT HIM UP

UP,

AND THREW BLEACH ON HIM AND

LOOPED A ROPE AROUND HIS NECK

AND YELLED HOMOPHOBIC SLURS.

CHICAGO POLICE INITIALLY SAID

THAT THEY WERE INVESTIGATING THE

REPORT OF THE ATTACK AS A HATE

CRIME.

THEN LAST WEEK THEY ARRESTED THE

TWO MEN SEEN IN SURVEILLANCE

VIDEO.

THEY WERE RELEASED

WITHOUT CHARGES BUT LATER IT

CAME OUT THAT THE MEN WERE

BROTHERS AND SMOLLETT KNEW THEM.

ONE WAS AN EXTRA ON HIS SHOW.

EVEN MORE DAMNING NEW VIDEO.

IN THIS STORE SECURITY FOOTAGE,

THE TWO MEN APPEAR TO BE BUYING

RED HATS AND SKI MASKS THE DAY

BEFORE THE ALLEGED ATTACK.

THE CLRK SAYS HE'S SHOCKED.

>> I'M LIKE THE ONE THAT SHOWED

THE GUY THE MASK.

SO IT'S STILL -- I'M STILL IN

DOUBT.

>> YOU DO SUCH A DISSERVICE WHEN

YOU LIE ABOUT THINGS LIKE THIS.

>> Reporter: SINCE THE FIRST

DOUBTS WERE RAISED ABOUT

SMOLLETT'S CLAIMS, THE ACTOR

INSISTED THAT EVERYTHING

HAPPENED EXACTLY AS HE SAID.

>> HOW CAN YOU DOUBT THAT, LIKE,

HOW DO

YOU NOT BELIEVE THAT?

IT'S THE TRUTH.

>> Reporter: SMOLLETT NOW HAS

A HIGH-PROFILE LAWYER TO HIS

TEAM WHO HAS REPRESENTED

NUMEROUS TROUBLED CELEBRITIES

INCLUDING MICHAEL JACKSON AND

R&B SINGER CHRIS BROWN.

TONIGHT POLICE CHARGED SMOLLETT

WITH A FELONY FOR FILING A FALSE

POLICE REPORT.

IF CONVICTED HE COULD FACE

JAILTIME BUT THE DAMAGE TO HIS

REPUTATION WOULD NO DOUBT LAST

MUCH, MUCH LONGER.

KIM BRUNHUBER, CBC NEWS, LOS

ANGELES.

>> Rosemary: AND TONIGHT

SMOLLETT'S LAWYERS RELEASED A

STATEMENT SAYING THAT THEIR

CLIENT ENJOYS THE PRESUMMITTION

OF

INNOCENCE BUT YOU BET THAT ALL

EYES WILL BE ON THAT COURTHOUSE

IN CHICAGO WHEN SMOLLETT APPEARS

TOMORROW AFTERNOON.

>> Andrew: NO KIDDING, ROSIE.

>>> TURNING TO VANCOUVER NOW

WHERE TWO SCHOOLS AT THE CENTRE

OF A MEASLES OUTBREAK HAVE

ORDERED STUDENTS AND STAFF TO

STAY HOME FOR THE NEXT TWO

WEEKS.

SOME HAVE NO PROOF OF

VACCINATION AND OTHERS DON'T

BELIEVE IN IT.

AND THAT'S A PROBLEM BECAUSE

WITH EIGHT CONFIRMED CASES THERE

ARE CONCERNS THAT THE DISEASE

COULD SPREAD, BUT IN CASES WHERE

PARENTS AND THEIR KIDS DISAGREE

ABOUT WHETHER TO GET A SHOT,

WHAT THEN?

RENÉE FILIPPONE SHOWS US.

>> WHO REMEMBERS WHAT HERD

IMMUNITY MEANS?

>> Reporter: IN THIS CLASSROOM

STUDENTS ARE TAUGHT ABOUT

VACCINES.

IT'S PART OF B.C.'S KIDS BOOST

IMMUNITY.

AN ONLINE PROGRAMME WITH THE

GOAL OF INOCULATING THE NEXT

GENERATION AGAINST

MISINFORMATION.

>> IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE

ARE TEACHING KIDS ABOUT

EVIDENCE-BASED SCIENTIFIC

INFORMATION SO THEY CAN MAKE

CRITICAL CHOICES FOR THEMSELVES.

>> Reporter: FOR THESE KIDS,

GETTING IMMUNIZED MAKES SENSE.

>> GETTING VACCINES IS IMPORTANT

BECAUSE NOT ONLY ARE YOU

PROTECTING YOURSELF BUT ALSO

PROTECTING OTHER PEOPLE AROUND

YOU.

>> Reporter: THAT MESSAGE

APPEARS TO BE GETTING THROUGH,

ESPECIALLY WITH THIS RECENT

MEASLES OUTBREAK.

ACCORDING TO LOCAL DOCTORS, SOME

KIDS ARE TAKING THEIR HEALTH

INTO THEIR OWN HANDS.

>> I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE AS YOUNG

AS 12 AND 14 ASKING FOR

VACCINATION BECAUSE THEY HAVE

BEEN EXPOSED TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE

BEEN VACCINATED AND IT'S CAUSED

THEM TO QUESTION THE CHOICES

THAT THEIR PARENTS MADE FOR

THEM.

>> I TOLD MOST OF MY FRIENDS

WHEN I GOT IT...

>> Reporter: 23-YEAR-OLD

MADDIE VASSI

WAS NOT VACCINATED AS A CHILD

BECAUSE HER MOTHER BELIEVED THAT

IT WAS DANGEROUS.

SHE GOT THE MEASLES VACCINE JUST

THIS WEEKEND.

>> IF THERE WAS ONE THING TO DO

IS TO GO BACK WHEN I WAS 15 AND

FIRST ASKING QUESTIONS AND

SPOKEN TO SOMEONE WHO WAS MORE

EDUCATED ON IT.

>> Reporter: IT'S NOT CLEAR

WHAT THE VACCINATION RATE IS IN

B.C. SCHOOLS BUT IT'S LOWER THAN

THE HEALTH AUTHORITY WOULD LIKE

TO SEE.

FOR EXAMPLE, JUST OVER HALF OF

THE STUDENTS AT THIS VANCOUVER

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAVE REPORTED

THEIR VACCINE STATUS.

THAT IS CONCERNING FOR THIS

PARENT SINCE 90% OF THE

COMMUNITY NEEDS TO BE IMMUNIZED

FROM MEASLES TO PREVENT ITS

SPREAD AND TO PROTECT THOSE

PEOPLE WHO CAN'T GET VACCINES.

>> YOUR DECISION ABOUT YOUR

CHILDREN'S VACCINATION DOESN'T

JUST AFFECT YOU AND YOUR

CHILDREN, IT AFFECTS MY CHILDREN

TOO.

>> Reporter: TWO DOSES OF THE

VACCINE ARE 99% EFFECTIVE AT

PREVENTING MEASLES.

ANYONE UNSURE OF THEIR

IMMUNIZATION STATUS IS

ENCOURAGED TO GET A BOOSTER.

RENÉE FILIPPONE, CBC NEWS,

VANCOUVER.

>> Andrew: NOW IN CANADA THE

RULES AROUND VACCINATIONS ARE

PRETTY RELAXED AND THEY'RE NOT

MANDATORY.

AND WHILE KIDS IN ONTARIO AND

NEW BRUNSWICK DO NEED PROOF OF

VACCINATION TO ENROLL

IN SCHOOL, PARENTS CAN GET

EXEMPTION ON THE GROUNDS SIMPLY

BELIEVE IN VACCINES.

BUT OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD

TOOK A STRICTER APPROACH.

ARGENTINA PASSED A LAW TO MAKE

VACCINATIONS FREE AND MANDATORY

RIGHT ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

IF YOU WANT TO ENROLL IN SCHOOL

OR EVEN RENEW YOUR PASSPORT YOU

HAVE TO SHOW PROOF THAT YOU HAVE

BEEN VACCINATED.

OVER IN AUSTRALIA, IF YOU'RE NOT

VACCINATED IT WILL COST YOU

MONEY.

THERE'S A POLICY OF NO JAB, NO

PAY.

MEANING THAT PARENTS WHO REFUSE

TO VACCINATE THEIR KIDS HAVE

THEIR BENEFITS DOCKED, AT LEAST

$28 AUSTRALIAN PER CHILD EVERY

TWO WEEKS.

AND IN FRANCE VACCINATIONS ARE A

MUST.

THEY EVEN RECENTLY EXPANDED THE

NUMBER OF VACCINATIONS THAT

CHILDREN HAVE TO GET FROM THREE

TO 11.

THE GOAL IS TO GET IN LINE WITH

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

GUIDELINES -- A BODY, WHICH, BY

THE

WAY, THAT PUTS ANTI-VAXXERS AS

THE TOP LIST WITH THOSE WITH AIR

POLLUTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE.

IT SAYS THAT A MILLION AND A

HALF LIVES COULD BE CHANGED

AND SAVED

EVERY YEAR IF IMMUNIZATION RATES

WERE IMPROVED.

>> Ian: WE'RE FOLLOWING SEVERAL

OTHER DEVELOPING STORIES

TONIGHT, STARTING WITH A FALLOUT

FROM A

CBC "GO PUBLIC" INVESTIGATION.

AN INQUIRY FOUND THAT THE BIG

TELECOM COMPANIES ARE USING

HARMFUL, MISLEADING

AGGRESSIVE SALES TACTICS.

>> IT'S A GREAT DAY BECAUSE IT'S

RARE THAT CONSUMERS ARE

TAKEN SERIOUSLY IN THIS COUNTRY.

>> Ian: THE CRTC SAYS THAT NEW

RULES

ARE NEEDED TO STOP THEM FROM

USING THOSE PRACTICES,

ESPECIALLY WITH SENIORS, PEOPLE

WITH DISABILITIES, AND PEOPLE

WHOSE FIRST LANGUAGE IS NOT

ENGLISH OR FRENCH.

THE REPORT INCLUDES SEVERAL

RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDING BETTER

PRICE PROTECTION AND COOLING OFF

PERIODS.

ALL OF THIS IS AFTER HUNDREDS OF

WORKERS AND ANOTHER THOUSAND

CUSTOMERS SENT "GO PUBLIC" THEIR

COMPLAINTS.

>>> A TORONTO-AREA FATHER IS

CHARGED WITH KILLING HIS

11-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER HAS DIED IN

HOSPITAL.

ROPESH RAJKUMAR DIDN'T RETURN

HIS DAUGHTER AFTER A VISIT.

HE DIED FROM A SELF-INFLICTED

GUNSHOT WOUND.

>> Rosemary: AHEAD ON "THE

NATIONAL," THEY WERE SOME OF THE

MOST VULNERABLE PREYED UPON BY

PRIESTS.

YOU'LL HEAR FROM SEX ABUSE

SURVIVORS TAKING THEIR

HEARTBREAKING STORIES TO THE

VATICAN.

>> Andrew: AND A CRASH LEFT

WICKENS PARALYSED.

AND TONIGHT A HUGE MOMENT IN HIS

ROAD TO RECOVERY.

>> Ian: WE KNOW THAT TRANS FATS

ARE NOT HEALTHY BUT WHAT ARE

COMPANIES REPLACING IT WITH?

>> IF YOU LOOK AT THIS RIGHT

NOW, 3.35 GRAMS OF SATURATED

FAT.

WE'RE MAKING OUR JUNK FOOD A

LITTLE

(*)

>> Ian: WHEN CANADA BANNED

ARTIFICIAL TRANS FATS LAST YEAR,

THE HOPE WAS THAT

IT WOULD REDUCE HEART DISEASE,

PREVENTING UP TO 12,000 HEART

ATTACKS OVER 20 YEARS, ACCORDING

TO SOME RESEARCHERS.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT WHAT IS

REPLACING THEM MAY NOT BE MUCH

BETTER FOR YOUR HEALTH OR FOR

THE ENVIRONMENT.

AS CHRISTINE BIRAK SHOWS US,

COMING UP WITH NEW ALTERNATIVES

HAS ITS OWN CHALLENGES.

>> CAN YOU BRING THE COOKIES

OVER HERE, PLEASE?

>> Reporter: BAKING IS A

SCIENCE, EVEN SLIGHT RECIPE

CHANGES CAN TURN LIGHT AND

FLUFFY INTO A HOCKEY PUCK.

SO WE ASKED THIS BAKER WHAT

HAPPENED

WHEN HE TOOK TRANS FATS OUT OF

THE MIX?

>> THE COOKING MIXES, THEY WERE

JUST STAY FLAT AND OUR ICINGS

WOULD STAY FLAT.

>> Reporter: MOST PASTRIES

NEED SOLID FAT TO LIFT THEM UP

AND TO CREATE THAT LAYERED SILKY

SMOOTH BITE.

WHEN SATURATED FATS LIKE BUTTER

AND LARD TOOK A BEATING OVER

HEALTH CONCERNS, TRANS FATS LIKE

SHORTENING AND MARGARINE TOOK

OVER.

IT TURNS OUT THAT THEY WERE EVEN

LESS HEALTHY.

>> THAT'S WHY WE JUST STARTED

GOING BACK TO

BUTTER AND MAKING OUR LIVES AS

EASY AS POSSIBLE.

>> SO THIS HAS ALREADY

CHANGED...

>> Reporter: TRANS FATS HAVE

ALSO DISAPPEARED FROM MOST

PRE-PACKAGED PROCESSED FOOD,

MAKING OLD FATS NEW AGAIN.

>> Reporter: SO WHAT'S IT GOT

IN IT NOW?

>> SO IF YOU LOOK AT THIS RIGHT

NOW, 3.5 FATS, SATURATED FATS.

>> Reporter: UNLIKE THE BAKERY

NOTHING HERE CONTAINS BUTTER,

ALMOST EVERYTHING HERE IS LOADED

WITH INEXPENSIVE PALM OIL.

>> PALM OIL IS A HIGHLY

SATURATED FAT.

EVEN THOUGH IT'S A PLANT-BASED

FAT.

>> Reporter: BUT

ENVIRONMENTALLY PALM IS HIGHLY

CONTROVERSIAL.

IT'S LINKED TO LARGE-SCALE

DEFORESTATION.

STILL FOOD MAKERS HOPE THAT

TRANS FAT FREE LEADS TO

HEALTHIER SALES.

NUTRITIONAL SCIENTISTS SEE IT

DIFFERENTLY.

>> WE'RE MAKING OUR JUNK FOOD A

LITTLE BIT LESS WORSE, NOT

NECESSARILY A GOOD THING.

>> NOTICE THERE'S LIQUID OIL

HERE.

>> Reporter: FOOD CHEMISTS

CAN'T TURN A

MUFFIN INTO A SALAD BUT THEY'RE

TRYING TO COME UP WITH HEALTHIER

FATS.

>> THIS COULD BE USED TO

SOLIDIFY ANY OIL.

>> Reporter: THEY FIGURED OUT

HOW TO SOLIDIFY OLIVE OIL USING

WATER.

>> SO THIS IS THE ONE THAT IS

MADE ONLY WITH OIL, WATER AND A

NATURAL EMULSIFIER AND THIS CAN

BE USED TO MAKE COOKIES AND

MUFFINS AND CAKES.

>> Reporter: BUT THE COST

KEEPS LARGE FOOD MANUFACTURERS

FROM BITING.

>> YES, SOMEBODY HAS TO TAKE THE

FIRST STEP.

>> Reporter: BUTTER MAKES

THINGS DELICIOUS, IT'S

SUSTAINABLE BUT EXPENSIVE AND

CALORIE HEAVY.

NO DOUBT ANOTHER NEW, PERHAPS

HEALTHIER SOLID FAT WILL COME

ALONG.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS NEXT?

>> I WISH I KNEW.

I REALLY, REALLY WISH I KNEW.

WE'LL SEE IN A COUPLE YEARS.

>> Reporter: CHRISTINE BIRAK,

CBC NEWS, TORONTO.

>> Rosemary: AHEAD TONIGHT ON

"THE NATIONAL," THEY'RE AFRAID

THAT THE WORLD HAS FORGOTTEN

ABOUT THEIR SONS.

CHRIS BROWN SPEAKS TO THE

FAMILIES OF UKRAINIAN SAILORS

IMPRISONED IN RUSSIA.

>> Andrew: FIRST THOUGH AS THE

VATICAN PREPARES TO CONFRONT

CLERGY ABUSE WE

SPEAK TO SURVI

(*)

>> Andrew: ON THE EVE OF AN

UNPRECEDENTED CONFERENCE ON

CLERGY ABUSE, THE POPE SET A

CONTENTIOUS TONE BY CRITICISING

THOSE WHO CONSTANTLY ACCUSE THE

CHURCH.

>> [SPEAKING ITALIAN]

>> Andrew: THE POPE ASKS, WHO

IN THE BIBLE IS CALLED THE GREAT

ACCUSER, WHO?

THE CROWD RESPONDS, THE DEVIL.

I CAN'T HEAR YOU, SAYS THE POPE.

THEY SHOUT MORE LOUDLY.

IT'S JUST ONE SIGN THAT THIS

GROUNDBREAKING FOUR-DAY

CONFERENCE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH FOR

ABUSE VICTIMS.

TODAY A DOZEN OF THEM MET WITH

VATICAN OFFICIALS AND LEFT

DISAPPOINTED THAT THE POPE

DIDN'T ATTEND.

>> IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE POPE

ONCE AGAIN IS GIVING THE TWO

FINGERS TO SURVIVORS AND TO

CHILD PROTECTION EVERYWHERE.

>> Andrew: THEY'RE CALLING FOR

THE POPE TO DECLARE ZERO

TOLERANCE FOR ABUSE ACROSS THE

CHURCH AND TO DISMISS BISHOPS

WHO TOOK PART IN COVER-UPS.

THE CBC'S THOMAS DAIGLE IS IN

ROME TONIGHT BUT FIRST HE

STOPPED IN VERONA TO MEET WITH A

PARTICULAR GROUP THAT FOR

DECADES WAS

PREYED UPON BY PRIESTS.

AND THEIR STORY IS ESPECIALLY

DISTURBING

BECAUSE OF WHAT MADE THEM SO

VULNERABLE.

(*)

>> Reporter: VERONA, A PLACE

SO PICTURESQUE THAT IT SERVED AS

A MEWS FOR SHAKESPEARE TWICE.

A CITY WITH MUCH DARKER STORIES

TOO, THE KIND THAT POETS DIDN'T

WRITE ABOUT.

NIGHTMARES THAT WERE KEPT HIDDEN

BY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

THOSE STORIES ARE SHARED

NOWADAYS AT THIS COMMUNITY

CENTRE FOR DEAF PEOPLE.

>> WE ASKED AND WE HAVE

SUGGESTED...

>> Reporter: MANY HERE WERE

PHYSICALLY AND SEXUALLY ABUSED

BY PRIESTS.

THIS IS THEIR SAFE SPACE.

Arsenal consider Lacazette SALE with only SIX positions filled for next season ● #AFC transfer News - Duration: 2:34.

ARSENAL will

consider selling Alexandre Lacazette this summer if the price is right.

The striker has been a solid performer for the Gunners since arriving from Lyon in 2017.

The 27-year-old scored 17 goals in all competitions during his first season at the Emirates under

Arsene Wenger.

While he started as Arsenal's first-choice striker after a club-record £52m move, Pierre-Emerick

Aubameyang came in 13 months ago on an even bigger deal to offer him strong competition.

Lacazette, though, has largely continued to be favoured as Arsenal's central frontman

with Unai Emery at the helm.

Aubameyang has either figured as a second striker or out on the left, but the Frenchman's

future is now suddenly uncertain.

While the No.9 has 12 goals so far this term and remains a popular figure among fans, Football

London say Lacazette could be move on in the summer.

A sale at the end of the campaign would depend on what offers arrive.

Emery is not believed to be keen on pairing Lacaette and Aubameyang together on a permanent

basis.

With the latter turning 30 in June, it means Lacazette is felt to hold the higher transfer

value.

It's far more likely he would be sold ahead of £57m Aubameyang should Arsenal cash in

on one of the two.

And it would leave Aubameyang as one of few certainties to be in Emery's team come the

start of the 2019/20 season.

Football London add goalkeeper Bernd Leno, defenders Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Hector

Bellerin, midfielders Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira, as well as Aubameyang, are

the only guaranteed starters next term right now.

Emery will have some critical decisions to make in the next transfer window, and Arsenal's

qualification for the Champions League would certainly have a barring on their activity.

The Gunners will once again be working within a restricted budget, meaning sales are expected

to help fund necessary new signings.

Liverpool handed boost for Champions League second-leg clash with Bayern Munich - Duration: 2:30.

Bayern Munich will be without right-back Joshua Kimmich for next month's crunch Champions League second-leg showdown with Liverpool

The two European heavyweights played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their last-16 encounter at Anfield on Tuesday night

That means the tie remains finely poised heading to Germany, but Bayern will have to take on the Reds without Kimmich, who is suspended for the clash after picking up a yellow card in the first leg

The Germany international was one booking away from a ban going into Tuesday's match, and was handed an early caution by Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi

Read More What Bayern Munich fans did to earn applause from Liverpool supporters at Anfield  Kimmich was deemed to have fouled Sadio Mane in the first half, earning a third booking in the competition and triggering an automatic suspension

Niko Kovac will now have a selection headache for the second leg, with Rafinha the likely replacement for the versatile 24-year-old

News24 - Man Utd gossip sees a shock link for Luis Suarez as Gareth Bale talk returns - Duration: 2:50.

Ask any Manchester United fan and they'll tell you it's not just about who they bring in this summer, but which players they keep too

There's a fear that some of the club's top names may not be around come August.  With contracts still to be signed, it's a waiting game - but the noises coming out of Old Trafford appear to be encouraging

Saudi Arabia's mega rich Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may not intend on buying Manchester United after all

But that doesn't mean money won't be made available to keep hold of the club's big game players - and bring world class stars in

We've been keeping a close eye on things as the speculation keeps on coming.  Here are the stories to catch our eye

Rashford: deal me in   Mirror Sport understands Manchester United have made an important breakthrough in talks to keep Marcus Rashford at the club long term

The striker has indicated to officials that he is ready to sign a new deal which will keep him at the club until potentially 2025

After the news of David De Gea's deal getting nearer on Tuesday, this is another big step forward

Now there's Suarez speculation   If sources in Spain are to be believed, Manchester United have "made contact" with Barcelona over the availability of Luis Suarez

Diario Gol claim the former Liverpool forward could potentially make a shock move to Old Trafford

Considering he has previous with United, it's probably a story to take with a ocean's worth of salt

Bale talk is back!  Luis Suarez isn't the only star in Spain linked over the past 24 hours

Sport are reporting Gareth Bale wants a transfer to United - but claim Real Madrid would rather do business with Chelsea

Bale has been a long-term target of United's as the Welshman continues to be linked with a return to the Premier League

Man City News - Fernandinho exposed at the back for Manchester City - Duration: 2:56.

One of the first intriguing proclamations of Pep Guardiola's time in England was that Fernandinho could play in ten positions

Everywhere but goalkeeper, apparently. He knows the game that well.We are only beginning to truly see that in action now, partly because of Ilkay Gundogan's re-emergence as the player he was at Borussia Dortmund

Given Gundogan's form, Fernandinho is not always the necessity he once was as the sitter and has twice started as a central defender in three weeks

Guardiola's vision for this City team continues to evolve over time and with that has come a little tinker involving his enforcer

'I think Ferna can play in that position, I am pretty sure,' the manager said.'He is fast, he is strong in the air, good going backwards and when he sees the football in front of him, his vision for the pass inside, switch of play is excellent

'That is all well and good and some of his through balls were exceptional earlier in the game

Both David Silva and Sergio Aguero were beneficiaries of his ingenuity. But on a night that turned on a controversial VAR decision, City needed more defensive nous

However well Fernandinho reads the game, when the heat is on and backs are against the wall, they need steel

They need someone who has defended his whole career. They need someone like Vincent Kompany, who was only fit enough for the bench against Schalke

John Stones has a groin injury and was a huge miss in a hectic seven-minute spell before the break, at the end of which Fernandinho was caught grappling Salif Sane from a free-kick and conceded the softest of penalties

There is merit in dropping Fernandinho deeper, and it worked a treat in the recent victory over Arsenal

Yet there will be games, and specific instances, where it just does not work.On Wednesday night was one of those and Guardiola cannot really plan for that

It is therefore his gamble if he persists with this experiment.
