Liverpool star RIDICULED for taking huge risk - 'He should realise he's not good enough' - Duration: 2:10.

Tony Cascarino was unhappy with the Cameroon international, despite Jurgen Klopp's side keeping Bayern at bay.

But former Chelsea striker Cascarino described the 27-year-old as 'unreliable' and slammed him for taking unnecessary risks against Bayern.

"The absence of the suspended Virgil van Dijk and injured Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren forced Jurgen Klopp to push Fabinho back from midfield to centre half," he wrote in The Times.

"The move weakened Liverpool in defence, but I have also never been a fan of Joël Matip, his defensive partner last night, who is a centre back by trade.

"You need to rely on players in that position not to make mistakes but you cannot really do that with Matip.

"He gave the ball away in his penalty area with a most ridiculous flick using the outside of his boot and was lucky to get away with it.

"He is not good enough on the ball to try that and he has to realise it."

Klopp admitted that while the 0-0 draw is not a dream 'result', he was satisfied with Liverpool's performance.

The Reds will travel to the Allianz Arena on 13 March knowing a score draw will take them into the quarter-finals on away goals.

But Cascarino thinks injuries to key players could take their toll in the Kop's run in.

He added: "Liverpool's squad does feel as though it is at full stretch as they push for success in the Premier League and Champions League.

"If those two challenges last until the end of the season it looks as though Klopp will have to rely on 13 or 14 players to carry them through.

"Anfield was not exactly imploring him to use a supersub last night as Liverpool struggled to break down Bayern."

The Supreme Court ruling on excessive fines has an Easter egg for libertarians Los Angeles Times

Coming to the relief of victims of over policing and following the advice of the Los Angeles Times the Supreme Court unanimously Wednesday that the 8th Amendments ban on excessive fines applies to the states as well as the federal government. It joins most other guarantees in the Bill of Rights that have been incorporated against the states through the 14th Amendment that was added to the Constitution after the Civil War.

The court sided on that constitutional question with Tyson Timbs, an Indiana man whose dollar 42,000 Land Rover SUV was seized in a civil forfeiture action after he pleaded guilty to selling worth of heroin to undercover police officers. The state said the SUV had been used to transport heroin.

Although the purchase price of the vehicle was more than four times the maximum dollar 10,000 fine assessed against Timbs for his drug conviction, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled that it didnt violate the 8th Amendment because that amendments ban on excessive fines didnt apply to state action.

The U.S. Supreme Court rightly reversed that decision. Writing for the majority, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg concluded that the ban on excessive fines qualified as one of the protections that must apply to the states because it is fundamental to our scheme of ordered liberty and deeply rooted in this nations history and tradition.

All nine justices agreed that the ban on excessive fines was extended to the states through the 14th Amendment. But two justices Neil Gorsuch, who joined Ginsburgs majority opinion, and Clarence Thomas, who didnt raised a question that captivated legal nerds as soon as the decision came down:

Exactly which language in the 14th Amendment does the work of incorporating the 8th Amendments ban on excessive fines against the states? This might seem like a dry technical question, but it has important political and policy implications, especially for libertarians who believe the Supreme Court should be more aggressive in protecting economic rights.

Section 1 of the 14th Amendment says:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Typically when the Supreme Court has incorporated one of the amendments in the Bill of Rights against the states, it has focused on the language in the 14th Amendment about depriving people of liberty without due process of law. It has fastened on the same language in protecting unenumerated rights such as sexual privacy.

In her majority opinion, Ginsburg wrote: With only a handful of exceptions, this court has held that the 14th Amendments Due Process Clause incorporates the protections contained in the Bill of Rights, rendering them applicable to the states.

But due process of law seems an odd phrase to pluck out for incorporation purposes, partly because its about legal process, not substantial rights. The Supreme Court in employing it has had to make use of a mind boggling concept called which implies that some rights are so fundamental that there is no fair process that could result in their deprivation.

To the ordinary reader, another phrase in Section 1 of the the command that no state shall make a law abridging the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States seems a better fit.

But theres a problem: In 1873, in the so called Slaughterhouse Cases, the Supreme Court defined the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States extremely narrowly. Essentially, the court said, the phrase required states to respect only privileges flowing from federal citizenship.

In recent years, however, some activists and legal scholars have called for the Supreme Court to reinvigorate the Privileges or Immunities Clause and at least two members of the court seem to have been listening.

In 2010, citing the due process clause, the Supreme Court in an by Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. ruled that the 2nd Amendments right to keep and bear arms applied to the states. Thomas concurred in the result, but wrote a separate opinion suggesting that a more straightforward path to that result would be a holding that the right to bear arms was incorporated through the privileges or immunities clause.

In Wednesdays forfeiture case, Thomas again wrote separately and again promoted the alternative route of incorporation through the privileges or immunities clause. But a second justice also sort of joined the chorus. Although he signed Ginsburgs opinion, Gorsuch, a Trump appointee, wrote separately that as an original matter the appropriate vehicle for incorporation may well be the 14th Amendments Privileges or Immunities Clause, rather than, as this court has long assumed, the Due Process Clause.

What difference does it make which clause the court cites so long as it rules that states as well as the federal government are bound by the Bill of Rights?

Heres why a comeback for the privileges or immunities clause could have real significance:

The court has used the due process clause to apply the Bill of Rights to the states and also to protect the right of personal privacy a right the court said in is broad enough to encompass a womans decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy . But since the 1930s it hasnt been sympathetic to claims that economic regulations violate due process, upholding those that pass a rational basis test.

Some who argue that the court should reinvigorate the privileges or immunities clause see the clause as doing more than incorporating the Bill of Rights. They also see it as a way to protect economic rights such as the right to without the burden of state licensing requirements. Its notable that the losing plaintiffs in the Slaughterhouse Cases included butchers who were harmed economically when the state of Louisiana awarded a monopoly on slaughtering cattle in New Orleans to a single company.

So when two Supreme Court justices see the long dormant privileges and immunities clause as a valuable and perhaps neglected provision of the 14th Amendment, thats significant though not, for now, transformative. They will need at least three recruits to breathe new life into the clause.

Sarah Isgur Flores, a Republican spokeswoman who worked most recently for the Justice Department, has been hired by CNN to help with the networks political coverage, propelling a Trump administration official directly into a news role for a top cable network.

Her hiring as a political editor, not a commentator, led to internal and of CNN for placing a Republican political operative in a position to help guide daily political coverage, including 2020 presidential campaign news.

In an internal memo on Wednesday announcing the hire, CNNs Washington bureau chief, Sam Feist, said Ms. Isgur would spend the first few months getting to know CNN, and then play a coordinating role in covering politics.

Ms. Isgur recently worked as a spokeswoman for the Justice Department, including for Jeff Sessions, the former attorney general whom in November, and for Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who has overseen the special counsels Russia investigation. She sent a goodbye email from her Justice Department account on Friday.

She previously worked as a deputy campaign manager for Carly Fiorina, a Republican who ran for president during the 2016 election.

Ms. Isgur was critical of Mr. Trump during the 2016 primaries and has also been critical of CNN, including complaining that the network was . And years ago she from a conservative news outlet that referred to her new employer as the Clinton News Network.

Mr. Feists memo on Wednesday came after a flurry of concern — and in some cases, deep frustration — voiced by members of the networks political staff, according to two people familiar with the complaints. The memo was co signed by two senior CNN executives, David Chalian and Virginia Moseley.

CNN has previously showed a willingness to hire employees from conservative leaning news outlets and organizations, arguing that ideological diversity is helpful in ensuring robust coverage. Kaitlan Collins, one of the networks rising star White House correspondents, was hired from The Daily Caller in 2017.

But the network is a frequent target of Mr. Trump and his allies, and its journalists have faced threats of physical violence, including last year.

Frank Sesno, a former CNN White House correspondent who now works as the director of George Washington Universitys School of Media and Public Affairs, said that there had long been a revolving door between politics and news outlets. But political aides typically have a cooling off period between jobs and Ms. Isgurs quick transition is unusual, he added.

He said CNN should clarify what Ms. Isgurs role would be. Its one thing if you have somebody on staff whom you can consult, and its another thing if they are editing your copy, he said. Pretty big difference.

CNN declined to comment on Wednesday. The memo from Mr. Feist said that Ms. Isgur would help organize and communicate between news gathering, digital and television arms of the network, which has a sprawling news operation.

Ms. Isgur did not respond to an email and a phone request for comment.

Some prominent journalists have forged careers in news after working in politics, including George Stephanopoulos, who was hired as a contributing correspondent for ABC News in 1996 after serving as one of President Bill Clintons closest advisers.

His move from the Clinton White House to ABC News — initially as a partisan member of a Sunday political panel, who would also do some reporting — raised hackles inside and outside the network at the time. He has since risen to become the networks chief anchor and a host of Good Morning America.

And the road from political strategist to political pundit is well traveled on both sides of the aisle.

After Karl Rove left President George W. Bushs administration, he joined Fox News as an analyst. , the chief political strategist for both of President Barack Obamas campaigns, was hired by NBC News as an analyst in 2013, and has since moved to CNN.

More recently, in 2016, that it had hired Corey Lewandowski as a paid contributor, days after Mr. Lewandowski was fired as a campaign manager for Mr. Trump. He later . To bring someone from that administration requires a clear statement that that person does not share that disdain for the industry they are entering, he said. And that their real commitment is to journalism, truth and the public.
