US Dept. of Transportation cancels nearly dollar 1 billion grant for Californias high speed rail pr - Duration: 2:22.

US Dept. of Transportation cancels nearly dollar 1 billion grant for Californias high speed rail pr

If built, the high speed rail system wouldve run from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The department added in a statement that it "is actively exploring every legal option to seek the return from California of dollar 2.5 billion in Federal funds Federal Railroad Administration previously granted for this now defunct project."

The statement from the Department of Transportation heightens the Trump administrations quest to recoup federal money spent on the project that was originally granted in 2009. California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced last week that he was scrapping the project because it was too costly and would take too long.

That decision led President Donald Trump to demand all of the money appropriated for the project by the federal government be returned.

Trump tweeted that California owed the federal government about dollar 3.5 billion for the canceled project. "We want that money back now," he wrote. "Whole project is a green disaster!"

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provided a federal grant of dollar 2.553 billion for the high speed rail project and the Consolidated Appropriations Act for the fiscal year 2010 gave a grant of dollar 929 million for the project. Trump derived the dollar 3.5 billion figure from these two grant amounts.

Newsom replied to the President in a tweet: "Were building high speed rail," adding, "This is CAs money, allocated by Congress for this project. Were not giving it back."

Despite the legal threats from the administration, California is .

The grants are based on agreements that require the California High Speed Rail Authority to complete a 120 mile high speed train track for the "initial central valley section" by the end of December 2022.

The agreement does not require the California High Speed Rail Authority to build trains for the track. This means the state could build out this segment of the high speed rail track, and, based on the agreements, California would not owe any money to the federal government even if no trains were built for the track.

The FRA writes in the letter that the state "has materially failed to comply with the terms of the Agreement and has failed to make reasonable progress on the Project," which they said was supposed to be on track to be finished by 2022. The agency writes the state failed to "submit required critical grant deliverables," and "failed to take the appropriate corrective actions to ensure delivery of the Project."

In response to the Department of Transportations cancellation of the grant, Newsom told CNN in a statement, "Its no coincidence that the Administrations threat comes 24 hours after California led 16 states in challenging the Presidents farcical national emergency. The President even tied the two issues together in a tweet this morning. This is clear political retribution by President Trump, and we wont sit idly by. This is Californias money, and we are going to fight for it."

Newsom was referring to the Presidents tweet earlier on Tuesday when he took aim at the Golden State.

"As I predicted, 16 states, led mostly by Open Border Democrats and the Radical Left, have filed a lawsuit in, of course, the 9th Circuit! California, the state that has wasted billions of dollars on their out of control Fast Train, with no hope of completion, seems in charge!"

Sixteen states on Monday evening challenging Trumps national emergency declaration concerning the US southern border. The group of states is led by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra.

Heres how much N.J. taxpayers have paid so far for an investigation into the hire of a Murphy staff - Duration: 3:10.

Heres how much N.J. taxpayers have paid so far for an investigation into the hire of a Murphy staff

By S.P. Sullivan | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com and Brent Johnson | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

New Jersey taxpayers have paid dollar 22,500 so far for an investigation launched by Gov. to examine how his administration responded to allegations that a former top staffer raped a campaign supporter, records show.

Peter Verniero, the former state Supreme Court justice who was tapped by Murphy to lead the inquiry, submitted a preliminary invoice on Jan. 16, according to a billing document obtained by NJ Advance Media through the state Open Public Records Act.

The is just the first invoice for the investigation, a source familiar with the issue told NJ Advance Media. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss the issue.

Its not yet known what the final tab will be.

Vernieros firm, firm Sills Cummis Gross, is being paid for its work, the Murphy administration has said.

Vernieros inquiry yielded earlier this month that largely cleared Murphys aides of wrongdoing in how they reacted to Katie Brennans allegations that Albert J. Alvarez raped her after a Murphy campaign gathering in April 2017. At the time, Brennan was a campaign supporter and Alvarez was a campaign official.

Alvarez was later hired to become chief of staff to the New Jersey Schools Development Authority even though people on Murphys staff have testified they were aware of the allegations and he remained in the job for months despite being told twice to leave.

Alvarez has repeatedly denied the accusations and two county prosecutors have declined to charge him with a crime.

Brennan is now chief of staff at the New Jersey Mortgage and Finance Agency.

The report says while Murphys aides made mistakes in how they handled the matter, they acted under their best judgement and understanding of existing law and that, ultimately, the system failed Brennan.

The report also backs up what Murphy has said many times: that he didnt personally know about Brennans allegations until last October, when Alvarez resigned after the Wall Street Journal contacted him for comment.

In the wake of the report, he had been told sooner and that his aides should have acted more swiftly and decisively to remove Alvarez.

State lawmakers from both parties have criticized the report. State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, D Bergen — the co chair of a separate legislative investigation into the matter — too many unanswered questions," is peppered with vagaries and uncertainties," and appeared to make more of an effort to exonerate Murphys staff than it did to shed light on the case.

The legislative committee is continuing with its investigation.

So far, the price tag of Vernieros investigation pales in comparison to what New Jersey taxpayers paid to the law firm that former Gov. , a Republican, hired to run The state spent more than dollar 10 million on that inquiry, which Democrats blasted as being biased and incomplete.

WATCH: Vans Employee Fired for Cursing at Teen in MAGA Hat | Heavy.com

A Vans shoe store employee in Kansas was fired after he was caught on video appearing to curse out a teenage customer because he was wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat.

A video uploaded to Twitter shows the unidentified employee apparently saying "f**k you" to the 14-year-old who was in the store with his family.

"He did nothing to you — what did you say to my son? To my 14-year-old son?" the boy's mother asked the worker in the video.

"I'm sure he's heard it before," the man replied.

The video was posted on February 17 and occurred at the Oak Park Mall in Overland Park.

"I was hoping he would hit me," someone, possibly the teen, is heard saying in the video.

The Boy's Mom Says The Verbal Attack Was Unprovoked.

The teen's mother is seen telling another Vans employee in the video that her son had done nothing before he was cursed at by the employee in the video.

"My son walked into this store.

That gentleman [appearing to point at the employee] cursed and told him, 'Take off your hat,'" she said.

"He said nothing to him, 14-year-old child, then he said, 'F you' to my son.

My son said nothing to him, did nothing," she added.

'I Was Hoping He Would Hit Me'.

The woman is later seen demanding the contact information of the company's corporate office.

"I came in to have a very decent discussion with him and once again got totally disrespected by him.

It's all on your video," she said.

"I tried to have a very respectful, very respectful conversation with him and it was disgusting how it was handled, to 14-year-old children that did nothing to him.

And then he came up and got into the face of one of them also.".

As the manager is giving the mother a pen to write down the information, a voice from behind the camera is heard saying "I was hoping he would hit me.

The video was posted by Ryan Fournier of Students for Trump.

"Let's get him fired," he tweeted.

The Worker Was Fired From His Job.

Vans said in a statement to Fox News that the employee in the video is "no longer with the company.

The company said its "primary focus is to provide the best customer service experience.

"The actions and comments from one employee in our Oak Park location are in contrast with our company's values and belief in personal expression," the statement said.

MARTIN KEOWN: Forward thinking is the key for Liverpool in Munich - Duration: 2:27.

Everyone thought the absence of Virgil van Dijk would cost Liverpool defensively. While the makeshift centre-half pairing of Joel Matip and Fabinho kept a clean sheet — no mean feat against Bayern Munich — they missed the Dutchman's forward thinking

Positivity from the centre backs is crucial to the way Jurgen Klopp's team play. Van Dijk and Joe Gomez — Liverpool's first-choice pairing — are usually effortless in possession

They are always looking to play forwards to give the platform to build their attacks

That was not always the case on Tuesday night. Matip, in particular, panicked in possession

His most frequent pass in the first half was back to Alisson, finding his goalkeeper eight times

It prevented Liverpool from getting on the front foot and striking an early blow

Bayern may not be the force they once were but they still carry the aura of champions

They were able to grow in confidence throughout the match and their forwards quickly started to anticipate that Matip would keep going backwards

When I was playing in defence for Arsenal nothing made Arsene Wenger more angry than when we passed back to David Seaman

Go forward and the opposition are deterred from pressing your goalkeeper. Go back and you only invite them on

It was understandable that Matip should be nervous on such a huge occasion but sometimes, the biggest mistake you can make is to be afraid to make one

Alisson saw plenty of the ball in those early stages but the time he dwelt on it was criminal

That put his team-mates under pressure, too.Van Dijk will return for next month's second leg in Munich

Liverpool will need his attacking impetus as much as his Rolls-Royce defending.
