The National for February 18, 2019 — Gerald Butts Resigns, Haiti Unrest, Sting Interview - Duration: 46:26.

(*)

>> Rosemary: ON THIS MONDAY

NIGHT, A STUNNING RESIGNATION.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU'S TOP ADVISOR AND

LONG-TIME ALLY STEPS DOWN IN THE

WAKE OF THE SNC-LAVALIN AFFAIR.

>> FOR HIM TO RESIGN MEANS THAT

THIS SCANDAL IS EXTREMELY

SERIOUS.

>> Rosemary: BUT IS IT ENOUGH

TO TAKE THE HEAT OFF THE

LIBERALS?

WE'VE GOT A SPECIAL MONDAY "AT

ISSUE."

(*)

>> WE'RE MAD AND SAD ALSO, VERY

SAD.

BECAUSE I KNOW THAT HAITI COULD

BE BETTER.

>> Ian: ANGER SIMMERS IN HAITI

AFTER DAYS OF VIOLENT PROTESTS

AND CONCERN NOW ABOUT WHAT COMES

NEXT.

WE'RE ON THE GROUND IN

PORT-AU-PRINCE.

(*)

(singing)

>>> STING RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS

FOR HIS CANADIAN THEATRE DEBUT.

>> YOU HAVE TO COME TO TERMS

WITH THE GHOSTS YOU LEFT BEHIND,

SO REALLY IT'S A SEARCH FOR

MYSELF.

>> Ian: A CANDID CONVERSATION

WITH STING.

THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."

(*)

(*)

>> Rosemary: WE BEGIN TONIGHT

WITH A POLITICAL SHOCKER, THE

SECOND HIGH-PROFILE RESIGNATION

BECAUSE OF THE SNC-LAVALIN

AFFAIR.

AND THIS ONE STRIKES THE VERY

CORE OF THE PRIME MINISTER'S

OFFICE.

GERALD BUTTS, TRUDEAU'S

PRINCIPAL SECRETARY, HAS STEPPED

DOWN OVER

ALLEGATIONS THAT HE OR SOMEONE

IN THE OFFICE TRIED TO PRESSURE

JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD TO

INTERVENE IN THE CRIMINAL CASE.

BUT VEHEMENTLY DENIES THOSE

CLAIMS.

HE'S LEAVING ANYWAY BECAUSE HE

FEARINGS HE HAS BECOME A

DISTRACTION.

WE'LL LOOK AT WHERE HIS

DEPARTURE LEAVES GOVERNMENT BUT,

FIRST, KATIE SIMPSON STARTS THE

COVERAGE WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT

THAT TOOK THE GOVERNMENT BY

SURPRISE.

>> KATIE TELFORD AND GERALD

BUTTS, MY FRIENDS AND

COMPATRIATES, THANK YOU FOR WHAT

YOU HAVE DONE.

>> Reporter: GERRY BUTTS HAS

BEEN BY THE PRIME MINISTER'S

SIDE SINCE THE START, SO TRUSTED

AS PRINCIPAL SECRETARY THAT

JUSTIN TRUDEAU HAS SAID WHEN

BUTT SPEAKS HE SPEAKS FOR THE

PRIME MINISTER.

MAKING THIS RESIGNATION ALL THE

MORE SHOCKING.

IN A STATEMENT BUTTS ADAMANTLY

DENIES THE ALLEGATIONS THAT THEY

PRESSURED THE FORMER JUSTICE

MINISTER TO END THE PROSECUTION

OF SNC-LAVALIN.

BUT THE FACT IS

THAT THIS ACCUSATION EXISTS, HE

WROTE, IT CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT

TAKE ONE MOMENT AWAY FROM THE

VITAL WORK THAT THE PRIME

MINISTER AND HIS OFFICE IS DOING

FOR ALL CANADIANS.

IT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF

THE OFFICE AND ITS IMPORTANT

WORK FOR ME TO STEP AWAY.

>> I, OF COURSE, WILL MISS HIM

PERSONALLY AS WILL -- AS WILL

ALL OF THOSE WHO SURROUND THE

PRIME MINISTER EVERY DAY AND ALL

OF THOSE WHO CARRY ON THIS WORK.

>> FOR HIM TO RESIGN MEANS THAT

THIS SCANDAL IS EXTREMELY

SERIOUS AND THE GOVERNMENT

APPEARS TO BE COVERING UP THE

TRUTH.

>> Reporter: BUTTS IS NOW AT

THE CENTRE OF THE SNC-LAVALIN

AFFAIR.

NEARLY TWO WEEKS AGO THE "GLOBE

& MAIL" REPORTED THAT JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD WAS PRESSURED BY

THE P.M.O. LAST FALL TO KILL THE

COURT CASE AGAINST THE QUÉBEC

ENGINEERING GIANT.

TRUDEAU HAS REPEATEDLY DENIED

THAT.

>> Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau: THE DECISION THAT SHE

MAKES AS ATTORNEY GENERAL,

PARTICULARLY IN THIS MATTER, ARE

HER DECISION AND I WAS NOT

DIRECTING HER OR PRESSURING HER.

>> Reporter: AN ETHICS

INVESTIGATION AND A JUSTICE

PROBE HAS ALREADY BEEN LAUNCHED

AND WITH BUTTS' RESIGNATION

TODAY THE N.D.P. IS CALLING FOR

MORE.

>> WE'RE SEEING WHAT LOOKS LIKE

AN ADMISSION OF GUILT.

AT THIS POINT WE'RE BOLSTERING

OUR ARGUMENT FOR A

PUBLIC INQUIRY.

>> Reporter: THE PRIME

MINISTER MEETS IN PERSON WITH

HIS CABINET TOMORROW AND IT'S

THE FIRST TIME SINCE LOSING A

STAR MINISTER AND NOW HIS

CLOSEST ADVISOR.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU'S INNER CIRCLE

NEEDS TO STOP THE POLITICAL

BLEEDING.

BUT THAT WON'T LIKELY HAPPEN

TOMORROW SINCE TRUDEAU WILL FACE

SCATHING DEMANDS FROM THE

OPPOSITION FOR TRANSPARENCY IN

QUESTION PERIOD.

KATIE SIMPSON, CBC NEWS, OTTAWA.

>> Rosemary: THERE ARE FEW

POSITIONS IN GOVERNMENT AS

POWERFUL AS THE ONE THAT GERRY

BUTTS JUST LEFT.

THE RIGHTHAND MAN AND TRUDEAU'S

POLITICAL CONFIDANT, ALONG WITH

KATIE TELFORD, THE PRIME

MINISTER'S

CHIEF OF STAFF, THEY WERE THE

TRIO OF DECISIONMAKING FOR THIS

GOVERNMENT.

BUT BUTTS IS MORE THAN THAT.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU ALSO DESCRIBES

HIM AS ONE OF HIS BEST FRIENDS,

THOUGH THEIR BACKGROUNDS COULD

NOT BE MORE DIFFERENT.

ONE THE PRIVILEGED SON OF A

PRIME MINISTER AND THE OTHER A

SON OF A COAL MINER.

FROM THEIR TIME AS STUDENTS AT

McGILL TO

TRUDEAU'S WEDDING, BUTTS WAS

WITH TRUDEAU FROM THE MOMENT HE

DECIDED TO

RUN FOR LIBERAL LEADER.

HE'S BEEN A CONSTANT PRESENCE,

AND A KEY ARCHITECT OF THE

CAMPAIGN THAT PROPELLED THE

LIBERALS TO VICTORY.

>> WE HAVE HAD A TEAM APPROACH

SINCE DAY ONE.

THE LEADER HAS DONE A PHENOMENAL

JOB AND THAT'S JUSTIN TRUDEAU.

SO WE'RE VERY PROUD TO WORK FOR

THAT MAN TONIGHT.

>> Rosemary: TRUDEAU HAS

ALWAYS SEEMED AWARE OF HOW HE

OWES BUTTS.

>> Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau: KATIE AND GERRY ARE

TWO OF

THE SMARTEST, TOUGHEST, HARDEST

WORKING PEOPLE THAT YOU WILL

FIND ANYWHERE.

THEY SHARE WITH ME THE

CONVICTION THAT POLITICS DOESN'T

HAVE TO BE NEGATIVE AND PERSONAL

TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

>> Rosemary: FROM THEN TO NOW,

BUTTS HAS BEEN CENTRAL TO THE

LIBERAL GOVERNMENT.

HE HELPED TO CRAFT THE

NARRATIVE, THE STORY THAT

LIBERALS WANTED TO TELL

CANADIANS, PUSHING THE

GOVERNMENT'S SIGNATURE

CHILD BENEFIT AND CARBON TAX.

BUT HE'S ALSO BEEN DESCRIBED AS

A SAFETY BLANKET, HIS ENFORCER

ON TWITTER AND IN CAUCUS.

CRITICS CALLED HIM THE PUPPET

MASTER, THE BRAINS OF THE

OPERATION, THE LIBERAL MOST

WILLING TO PUBLICLY PICK FIGHTS

ON WEDGE ISSUES.

>> I THINK THAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN

UNDERESTIMATING MR. TRUDEAU

SINCE BEFORE HE WAS IN PUBLIC

LIFE AND I -- I THINK THAT IT

WILL PROBABLY CONTINUE.

I THINK HE'S DONE A TRULY

REMARKABLE JOB.

>> Rosemary: WHICH IS PART OF

WHY THE PRIME MINISTER TODAY

THANKED HIM FOR HIS FRIENDSHIP

AND WHY NO ONE HERE THINKS THAT

GERALD BUTTS IS GOING TOO FAR

FROM

THE LIBERAL PARTY.

AS FOR THE INVESTIGATION INTO

THIS WHOLE AFFAIR, THE

SNC-LAVALIN CONTROVERSY,

TOMORROW THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

JUSTICE COMMITTEE WILL MEET

AGAIN TO DEBATE OTHER POSSIBLE

WITNESSES IN ITS PROBE.

LAST WEEK YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT

THE LIBERAL MAJORITY

VOTED DOWN CALLS TO HAVE SOME

KEY PLAYERS TESTIFY, INCLUDING

JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD AND GERALD

BUTTS AND SENIOR MEMBERS

OF THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE.

SO ALL EYES WILL BE ON THAT

COMMITTEE TOMORROW AFTERNOON.

SO THERE'S A LOT TO WATCH FOR

AND THERE'S A LOT TO ASK.

IS THIS ENOUGH TO TAKE SOME

PRESSURE OFF THE GOVERNMENT OR

DOES THIS JUST DELAY THE PAIN

UNTIL JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD

FINALLY SPEAKS, IF SHE SPEAKS.

AND A LOT FOR "AT ISSUE" TO

TACKLE.

ANDREW COYNE AND ROB RUSSO ARE

HERE FOR A SPECIAL EDITION,

THAT'S COMING UP IN A LITTLE

OVER 10 MINUTES.

A LOT TO TALK ABOUT, IAN, STAY

TUNED.

I KNOW THAT YOU WILL.

>> Ian: AND NOW, ROSEMARY, LET'S

TURN TO HAITI, ANOTHER BIG

STORY.

AND PEOPLE THERE WERE BRACING

FOR MORE VIOLENCE TODAY.

INSTEAD, THE CAPITAL SEEMED THE

PICTURE OF CALM AND BUSINESSES

AND OFFICES WERE FINALLY ABLE TO

REOPEN AFTER 11 DAYS OF ANGER

AND PROTESTS.

BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE, HAITI

REMAINS A NATION IN UPHEAVAL.

AS PAUL HUNTER FOUND OUT IN

PORT-AU-PRINCE, TODAY'S RELATIVE

PEACE ISN'T LIKELY TO LAST.

>> Reporter: THE STREETS OF

PORT-AU-PRINCE SEEMED ALMOST

NORMAL TODAY, BUT GET JUST BELOW

THE SURFACE AND THE UNDERLYING

ANGER JUMPS OUT.

CHECK THE SCRATCHED OUT FACE OF

HAITIAN PRESIDENT JOVENEL MOISE

AND THE STILL BARELY PASSABLE

ROADS WHERE RIOTERS LAST WEEK

FOUGHT TO PUSH HIM FROM OFFICE.

>> [speaking foreign

language].

>> Reporter: WHAT I WANT IS

FOR THE PRESIDENT TO RESIGN,

THIS MAN TOLD US.

HE'S A SCHOOLTEACHER AND HIS

NEARBY CLASSROOMS TODAY SAT

EMPTY.

HIS STUDENTS ARE AT HOME THIS

WEEK OVER FEARS OF RENEWED

VIOLENCE HERE.

AS THE HAITIANS RISE UP AGAINST

THE GOVERNMENT ACCUSED OF

CORRUPTION.

THEIR COUNTRY, AMONG THE POOREST

IN THE WORLD, SAW MANY HUNDREDS

OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS MEANT TO

HELP TO TURN THIS PLACE AROUND

MISUSED AND LOST.

AT A HOSPITAL ACROSS TOWN

EVIDENCE NOT JUST OF HAITI'S

DESPERATION, BUT ALSO OF ITS

DETERMINATION TO NOW STAND UP

AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT.

THREE OF THE FOUR PATIENTS HERE

SUFFERED GUNSHOT WOUNDS.

AND RIGHT NEXT DOOR...

>> [speaking foreign

language].

>> SO THIS ONE IS ONE OF THE

VICTIMS OF THE VIOLENCE, YEAH,

IN THE COUNTRY.

SO HE GOT BOTH LEGS FRACTURED IN

BOTH LEGS.

GUNSHOT WOUND.

>> Reporter: THE GUNSHOT, SAID

THE MAN, CAME FROM THE POLICE.

WHILE HE DEMONSTRATED.

>> [speaking foreign

language].

>> Reporter: THEY WERE

SHOOTING AT US, HE SAID.

WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO THEM,

WE WERE JUST STANDING UP FOR OUR

RIGHT.

MEANWHILE THE HOSPITAL ITSELF

SEEMS ON LIFE SUPPORT.

THE PLACE IS RUNNING LOW ON

OXYGEN.

IN THE MEDICINE ROOM THEY NEED

MEDICINE.

SHELVES THAT SHOULD BE STOCKED

SIT LIKE THIS AND IN THE BLOOD

LAB, GUESS WHAT.

>> WE NEED EVERYTHING.

WE NEED O, AND WE NEED A, AND WE

NEED B.

WE NEED EVERYTHING.

YOU CAN GO TO THE FRIDGE AND YOU

WILL SEE.

>> Reporter: INDEED, IN THE

FRIDGE JUST FOUR BAGS WORTH AND

EACH IS ALREADY SPOKEN FOR.

THE ONLY REAL CHOICE LEFT FOR

HAITIANS WE WERE TOLD IS TO NOW

STAND UP AND TO PUSH HARD FOR A

BETTER COUNTRY.

>> WE NEED TO FIGHT FOR CHANGE.

>> Reporter: BUT LOST ON NO

ONE THE TRUTH THAT CHANGE, IF IT

EVER COMES TO HAITI, ALWAYS

COMES SLOWLY.

AMID THOSE SIDEWALK VENDORS

TODAY, THAT'S RIGHT, IT IS

LEFTOVER RUBBLE FROM THE

EARTHQUAKE NINE YEARS AGO.

IS IT ANY WONDER THAT HAITIANS

ARE SO FRUSTRATED BY EVERYTHING?

>> WE'RE MAD AND -- WE'RE MAD

AND SAD ALSO.

VERY SAD.

BECAUSE I KNOW THAT HAITI COULD

BE BETTER.

IT COULD BE A LOT BETTER THAN

THAT.

>> Ian: AND PAUL IS JOINING US

NOW FROM HAITI'S CAPITAL.

WE WERE EXPECTING BIG PROTESTS

TODAY, PAUL.

WHY DIDN'T THAT HAPPEN?

>> Reporter: WELL, NO ONE

REALLY KNOWS.

THE GOVERNMENT IS NOW PROMISING

TO CUT SPENDING, MAYBE THAT'S A

FACTOR.

BUT EVERYONE THAT WE TALKED TO

TODAY SAY THEY DON'T BELIEVE

THAT.

IT'S JUST TALK.

STILL, THEY WERE GRATEFUL FOR

ANOTHER DAY OF NORMALCY.

I MEAN, THE CANADIAN EMBASSY

REOPENED TODAY FOR THREE HOURS.

THAT'S A GOOD THING.

BUT DON'T FORGET THAT THE

UNDERLYING ISSUES REMAIN, PEOPLE

ARE ANGRY AND ARE DEMANDING REAL

CHANGE.

WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS TOMORROW.

>> Ian: ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU,

PAUL.

>>> IT'S HARD TO PINPOINT

EXACTLY WHEN THINGS STARTED TO

GO DESPERATELY WRONG IN HAITI.

AFTER ALL, THE COUNTRY HAS

LURCHED FROM CRISIS TO CRISIS

FOR DECADES.

CHRONIC POVERTY TO FOREIGN

INTERVENTIONS TO MILITARY COUPS.

BUT THE ROOTS OF THIS POLITICAL

CRISIS ARE MORE RECENT.

HERE'S THE BRIEF ON A TURBULENT

DECADE...

>>> THE WORLD POURED BILLIONS

INTO HAITI AFTER THE 2010

EARTHQUAKE.

CANADA ALONE SENDING

$440 MILLION IN IMMEDIATE

EMERGENCY RELIEF.

BUT MUCH OF THE MONEY MEANT TO

REBUILD THE COUNTRY CAN'T BE

ACCOUNTED FOR.

HAITI'S NEXT GOVERNMENT MIRED IN

ACCUSATIONS OF DEEP CORRUPTION

ALSO DID LITTLE.

AND AFTER THE DISASTROUS 2015

ELECTION WIDELY SEEN AS

FRAUDULENT AND WHICH UNLEASHED

MONTHS OF POLITICAL CHAOS,

CANADA STARTED BACKING AWAY.

JOVENEL MOISE CAME TO POWER IN

2017 WITH

LITTLE POPULAR SUPPORT OR

APPARENT ABILITY TO IMPROVE

THINGS.

AND HAITIANS HAVE SEEN THE

OPULENT MANSIONS CONSTRUCTED FOR

THE RICH.

SO WHEN ACCUSATIONS SURFACED

THAT BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SET

ASIDE TO BUY DISCOUNT FUEL FROM

VENEZUELA HAD BEEN STOLEN, WELL,

THINGS EXPLODED ALL OVER AGAIN

AND THIS TIME INTERNATIONAL

DONORS MAY BE MUCH MORE CAREFUL

WITH THEIR MONEY GOING FORWARD.

ONE LAST NOTE ON THE HAITI STORY

TONIGHT, AND IT'S A HAPPY ONE

FOR THE FAMILIES OF THOSE

CANADIAN NURSES NOW SAFELY OUT

OF THE TROUBLED COUNTRY,

INCLUDING KATHERINE O'NEIL, ONE

OF THOSE WHO LANDED IN MONTRÉAL

EARLIER TONIGHT.

>> WE ARE VERY HAPPY TO BE WHERE

WE WERE AND TAKING CARE OF THE

PEOPLE THAT WE WERE WITH.

I THINK THAT ALL EIGHT OF US

NURSES HAVE LEFT A LITTLE PIECE

OF OUR HEART BACK IN HAITI.

>> Ian: GRACIOUS EVEN AFTER A

LONG ORDEAL.

AND A LITTLE LATER IN THE SHOW

WE'RE THERE THE MOMENT THAT ONE

OF THOSE NURSES' HUSBANDS FINDS

OUT THAT SHE'S SAFELY ON THE WAY

OUT.

STAY WITH US FOR THAT.

>> Rosemary: BRITAIN'S MAIN

OPPOSITION PARTY WAS ROCKED BY A

MASS EXODUS THIS MORNING WHEN

SEVEN LABOUR M.P.s STAGED A

DRAMATIC WALKOUT.

THEY SAY THEY QUIT OVER THE

PARTY'S HANDLING OF BREXIT.

BUT AS KAYLA HOUNSELL TELLS US,

EVEN MORE DISTURBING IS THEIR

ALLEGATION THAT THE PARTY IS

RIFE WITH ANTI-SEMITISM.

>> Reporter: BRITISH

PARLIAMENTARIANS CAN'T AGREE ON

MUCH LATELY, BUT AT LEAST FOR

TODAY

THIS GROUP WAS UNITED ON ONE

THING -- THEY CAN NO LONGER

STAND WITH THEIR PARTY.

>> THIS HAS NOT BEEN AN EASY

DECISION FOR ANY OF US.

WE'VE ALL BEEN LABOUR MEMBERS OF

PARLIAMENT FOR VERY MANY YEARS.

>> Reporter: AND WITH THAT

SEVEN OPPOSITION LABOUR M.P.s

WALKED AWAY.

THEY HAVEN'T CREATED A NEW

PARTY, AT LEAST NOT YET,

PLEDGING TO SIT AS AN

INDEPENDENT GROUP, FIGHTING

ANTI-SEMITISM.

>> I AM LEAVING BEHIND A CULTURE

OF BULLYING, BIGOTRY AND

INTIMIDATION.

>> Reporter: AND THAT EVER

PRESENT ISSUE IN BRITISH

POLITICS -- BREXIT.

>> I'M FURIOUS THAT THE LABOUR

LEADERSHIP IS COMPLICIT IN

FACILITATING BREXIT WHICH WILL

CAUSE GREAT ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND

POLITICAL DAMAGE TO OUR COUNTRY.

>> Reporter: DURING THE 2016

REFERENDUM, LABOUR CAMPAIGN TO

REMAIN IN THE EUROPEAN UNION.

THE SEVEN M.P.s WHO LEFT

LABOUR TODAY ARE ALL IN FAVOUR

OF A SECOND REFERENDUM AND SAY

THAT CORBYN'S OPPOSITION TO

BREXIT HAS BEEN WEAK.

CORBYN RELEASED A STATEMENT

SAYING THAT HE'D DISAPPOINTED

AND GOING ON TO SAY THAT THE

TORIES ARE BUNGLING BREXIT AND

THAT NOW, MORE THAN EVER, IS THE

TIME TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER TO

BUILD A BETTER FUTURE FOR US

ALL.

>> WHAT THIS DOES IS TO FURTHER

FRAGMENT THE OPINION IN

PARLIAMENT.

>> Reporter: IT ALL COMES AT A

TIME WHEN PRIME MINISTER THERESA

MAY IS STRUGGLING TO GET HER

BREXIT DEAL APPROVED.

THIS POLITICAL SCIENTIST SAYS

THAT THE SEVEN M.P.s

THEMSELVES WON'T CHANGE THE

COURSE OF BREXIT BUT THEIR

ACTIONS MIGHT.

>> ONE THING THAT I THINK THAT

WE WILL NOW DISCOVER IS WHETHER

THIS EMBOLDENS OTHER M.P.s,

PARTICULARLY SOME CONSERVATIVE

M.P.s, TO BE MORE WILLING TO

VOTE DOWN A NO-DEAL BREXIT.

>> Reporter: THE NEW

INDEPENDENT BLOCK DID APPEAL

DIRECTLY TO OTHER M.P.s TO

CROSS THE FLOOR TODAY, SAYING

POLITICS IS BROKEN BUT THERE IS

AN ALTERNATIVE.

AND THOSE WHO WATCHED POLITICS

CLOSELY HERE SAY WITH PARLIAMENT

IN SUCH DISARRAY OVER BREXIT

THAT THERE MIGHT BE APPETITE FOR

SOMETHING NEW.

KAYLA HOUNSELL, CBC NEWS,

LONDON.

>> Rosemary: NOW BRITISH

M.P.s WILL HAVE ANOTHER VOTE

ON PRIME MINISTER MAY'S BREXIT

PLAN, THAT WILL HAPPEN ON

WEDNESDAY.

SO SHE'S SENDING HER MINISTERS

ACROSS EUROPE TO TRY TO GET MORE

CONCESSIONS IN HOPES THAT THIS

TIME THE HOUSE WILL VOTE IN

FAVOUR.

BRITAIN IS SET TO LEAVE THE I.U.

-- E.U.

ON MARCH 29th.

>> Ian: HERE'S SOME THE OTHER

DEVELOPING STORIES THAT WE'RE

WATCHING TONIGHT ON "THE

NATIONAL"...

>>> A CONVOY OF ABOUT 80 TRUCKS

FROM WESTERN CANADA ARE MAKING

THEIR WAY TO A RALLY ON

PARLIAMENT HILL TOMORROW.

DUBBED THE "UNITED WE ROLL"

CAMPAIGN, ORGANIZERS ARE CALLING

ON THE GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT THE

ENERGY INDUSTRY BY BUILDING

PIPELINES.

THEY'LL BE MERGING WITH ANOTHER

GROUP

FROM THE EAST BEFORE HEADING

INTO OTTAWA.

THEY WANT TO SPEAK DIRECTLY WITH

THE PRIME MINISTER.

>> [speaking foreign

language].

>> Ian: HUAWEI FOUNDER IS

SPEAKING OUT ABOUT THE ARREST OF

HIS DAUGHTER, THE COMPANY

EXECUTIVE MENG WANZHOU.

IN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE BBC HE

SAYS THAT THE MOVE WAS

POLITICALLY MOTIVATED AND ADDED

THAT HE, QUOTE "OBJECTS TO WHAT

THE U.S. HAS DONE."

MENG WAS ARRESTED IN VANCOUVER

IN DECEMBER AT THE REQUEST OF

THE UNITED STATES.

SHE WAS CHARGED WITH BANK AND

WIRE FRAUD, ALLEGEDLY VIOLATING

THE AMERICAN SANCTIONS AGAINST

IRAN.

>>> U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP

CALLING ON THE VENEZUELAN

MILITARY TO ALLOW HUMANITARIAN

AID INTO THE COUNTRY AND ALSO TO

BACK JUAN GUIADÓ AS INTERIM

LEADER.

THIS IS AS INTERNATIONAL

PRESSURE RAMPS UP FOR THE

VENEZUELAN PRESIDENT NICOLÁS

MADURO TO STEP DOWN.

>> President Donald Trump: WE

SEEK A PEACEFUL TRANSITION OF

POWER BUT ALL OPTIONS ARE OPEN.

>> Ian: CANADA AND THE UNITED

STATES ARE

AMONG THE DOZENS OF COUNTRIES

THAT HAVE THROWN THEIR SUPPORT

BEHIND GUIADÓ.

>> Rosemary: AHEAD TONIGHT ON

"THE NATIONAL," "AT ISSUE"

TACKLES GERALD BUTT'S SUDDEN

RESIGNATION.

WHY QUIT IF HE DID NOTHING

WRONG?

WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE THE PRIME

MINISTER?

ANDREW AND ROB RUSSO ARE

STRAIGHT AFTER THE BREAK.

>> Ian: AND WHO IS TEACHING

TEENAGERS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF

VAPING?

WHY SOME STUDENTS ARE TAKING

MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS.

>> Rosemary: AND LATER "THE

NATIONAL" GETS PERSONAL WITH

STING.

HE TALKS ABOUT HIS NEW MUSICAL

IN TORONTO, HIS HOMETOWN, AND

FATHERHOOD.

>> Reporter: HOW DOES THAT

AFFECT YOUR

RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CHILDREN,

YOUR SON IS A MUSICIAN AND ONE

OF YOUR DAUGHTERS IS A MUSICIAN?

>> YOU HAVE TO ASK THEM.

I'M NOT SURE HOW GOOD A PARENT I

AM, UM... AT

(*)

>> MR. BUTTS IS A VERY IMPORTANT

FIGURE IN THE GOVERNMENT.

SO HIS DEPARTURE WILL BE MISSED.

>> FOR HIM TO RESIGN MEANS THAT

THIS SCANDAL IS EXTREMELY

SERIOUS AND THE GOVERNMENT

APPEARS TO BE COVERING UP THE

TRUTH.

>> WHAT WE'RE SEEING NOW IS

SOMETHING THAT LOOKS LIKE A

PRETTY SURPRISING

POTENTIAL ADMISSION OF GUILT.

>> Rosemary: SO SOME OF THE

REACTION TO TODAY'S POLITICAL

STUNNER.

AS WE HAVE BEEN TELLING YOU THAT

THE PRIME MINISTER'S PRINCIPAL

SECRETARY, GERALD BUTTS, HAS

STEPPED DOWN.

HE SAYS HE DENIES PRESSURING

JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD ON THE

ISSUE OF SNC-LAVALIN, SO WHY

RESIGN AND WHAT KIND OF HOLE

DOES THIS LEAVE IN GOVERNMENT?

IT'S ONLY MONDAY BUT YOU BETTER

BELIEVE THAT WE CALLED IN "AT

ISSUE" FOR THIS ONE.

ANDREW COYNE WE TRACKED DOWN IN

NEW YORK TONIGHT AND ROB RUSSO,

THE CBC'S BUREAU CHIEF IS HERE

WITH ME IN OTTAWA.

ALL RIGHT, LET'S START WITH THAT

PART OF THE LETTER.

I'LL START WITH YOU, ANDREW.

IT SAYS VERY CLEARLY THAT HE

DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG

BUT HE WANTS TO LEAVE TO TAKE

SOME OF, I GUESS, THE PRESSURE

OFF THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE

AND DEFEND HIS REPUTATION ON HIS

OWN.

IS THAT HOW THAT MESSAGE WILL BE

INTERPRETED BY CANADIANS AT

LARGE THAT THIS IS SORT OF OVER

BECAUSE GERALD BUTTS HAS LEFT?

>> NO.

LOOK, THIS IS AN EARTHQUAKE.

YOU DON'T LOSE SOMEBODY AS

CENTRAL TO THIS GOVERNMENT, AS

CLOSE TO THIS PRIME MINISTER,

OVER A MOMENTARY PROBLEM OR A

PUBLIC RELATIONS ISSUE, ETC.

I KNOW THAT THERE'S GRUMBLING IN

CAUCUS ABOUT THE WAY THAT THE

GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN HANDLING

THIS, ETC., BUT THIS IS NOT

ENOUGH TO

PRECIPITATE THIS KIND OF ACTION.

THE ONLY REASON THAT THIS IS

HAPPENING IS BECAUSE THEY'RE

ANTICIPATING EXTREMELY BAD NEWS.

I'M STRUCK BY ONE THINGS, AND

ONE IS SAYING THAT HE'S

PERSONALLY NOT BEEN ACCUSED.

I'VE NOT SEEN THAT PUBLICLY.

I'VE ONLY SEEN UNNAMED OFFICIALS

IN THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE

BEING ACCUSED.

AND SECOND HIS INSISTENCE ON THE

CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD.

>> Rosemary: SO IT'S AN

ATTEMPT, ROB, THEN TO MOVE THE

CONVERSATION AWAY

FROM THE PRIME MINISTER'S

OFFICE?

>> I THINK THAT ANDREW IS RIGHT,

I DON'T THINK THAT IT WILL HAVE

THAT EFFECT AT ALL.

I THINK THAT THE SHORT-TERM

EFFECT IS TO REINFORCE THE

NOTION

THAT THIS IS A GOVERNMENT IN

SOME CANTANKEROUS DISARRAY AND

HAS HAD A MISERABLE FIRST SEVEN

WEEKS TO 2019, BEGINNING WITH

THE FIRING OF JOHN MCCALLUM AND

NOW ENDING UP WITH THE DEPARTURE

OF JUSTIN TRUDEAU'S BEST FRIEND

OF THREE DECADES.

AND THE MAN WHO CHARTED HIS

ASCENDANCY TO POWER BEGINNING

SOME 15 OR 20 YEARS AGO AT THE

FUNERAL OF PIERRE TRUDEAU WHEN

HE HELPED TO WRITE THE EULOGY

FOR HIS FATHER.

SO, I MEAN, THE WORD "BOMBSHELL"

DOES GET TOSSED AROUND RATHER

EASILY

IN THIS TOWN.

THIS IS REALLY A TECTONIC

DEVELOPMENT.

>> Rosemary: EXCEPT IF WE WERE

TO COMPARE IT WITH -- AND IT'S

NOT AN APT COMPARISON, BUT IF WE

COMPARED IT WITH NIGEL WRIGHT

LEAVING STEPHEN HARPER AFTER

ADMITTING THAT HE GAVE THAT

$90,000 CHEQUE TO MIKE DUFFY.

THERE WAS THE ADMISSION OF GUILT

AND WALKED AWAY AND IT ALLOWED

STEPHEN HARPER TO SAY IT'S NOT

MY BALL OF WAX, DIDN'T KNOW

ANYTHING.

IN THIS CASE THERE'S NO

ADMISSION OF ANYTHING DONE

WRONG, AND I'M GOING TO HAVE TO

TAKE HIM AT HIS WORD THAT HE

DOESN'T BELIEVE THAT HE DID

ANYTHING WRONG.

SO IT DOESN'T REALLY HELP -- I'M

NOT SURE HOW IT HELPS THE PRIME

MINISTER'S OFFICE IN ANY REAL

WAY IF YOU CAN'T DISTANCE

YOURSELF FROM IT.

GO AHEAD.

>> WHAT IT DOES DO -- IF HE'S IN

THAT OFFICE IT'S HARD FOR HIM TO

BE THE PUBLIC FACE OF DEFENCE

AND AN AGGRESSIVE COUNTER

ATTACK.

EVEN THOUGH MR. BUTTS HAS NEVER

BEEN SHY.

ANYBODY WHO FOLLOWS HIS TWITTER

FEED KNOWS THAT HE'S AN UNUSUAL

PRINCIPAL SECRETARY AND THAT HE

HAS A VERY

PUBLIC FACE THAT WAY.

BUT HE'LL NOW BE UNSHACKLED FROM

HIS DAY-TO-DAY DUTIES IS AND

FROM ANY RETICENCE OF MAKING

PUBLIC COMMENTS ABOUT WHAT JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD SAID.

AND AS ANDREW POINTED OUT IN HIS

NOTE HE SAID "I WAS THE CONTACT

POINT FOR JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD

IN THAT OFFICE.

I WAS THE ONE WHO DEALT WITH

HER."

SO HE WILL HAVE QUESTIONS TO

ANSWER.

BUT HE ALSO WILL HAVE

INFORMATION TO IMPART AS WELL.

>> Rosemary: OKAY, ANDREW?

>> THE FIRST POINT IS THAT NIGEL

WRIGHT'S DEPARTURE DIDN'T TAKE

THAT ISSUE AWAY FROM THE HARPER

GOVERNMENT.

THEY DEALT WITH IT RIGHT UP TO

THE ELECTION.

IT REALLY HURT THEM.

>> Rosemary: YEP.

>> SECONDLY, AS IMPORTANT AS

NIGEL WRIGHT WAS IN THAT

GOVERNMENT, IT'S DWARFED BY THE

PRESENCE OF GERALD BUTTS IN THIS

GOVERNMENT.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE BODY BLOW TO

THIS GOVERNMENT.

AND THE THIRD THING, GOING BY

THAT LETTER, BUTTS

TALKS ABOUT DEFENDING HIS OWN

REPUTATION.

SO IF WE TAKE THAT AS MEANING

SOMETHING, YES, HE'LL BE FREER

TO TALK ABOUT AND TO DEFEND

HIMSELF, BUT HE WOULD NOT BE

ACTING IT SEEMS TO ME ON AN

ISSUE AS IMPORTANT AS THIS

WITHOUT THE PRIME MINISTER'S SAY

SO AND WITHOUT THE PRIME

MINISTER'S INVOLVEMENT.

MAYBE I'M WRONG ON THAT.

BUT IT SEEMS UNLIKELY.

SO EVEN IF HE'S ABLE TO DEFEND

BETTER HIS OWN REPUTATION IN

THAT AND HIS OWN CONDUCT IN

THAT, THAT CERTAINLY WON'T TAKE

AWAY HOW INVOLVED HE WAS IN THIS

THIS.

>> Rosemary: I NEVER LIKE TO

SUGGEST THAT ONE PERSON IS SO

VENTRAL TO GOVERNMENT THAT IT

WILL FALL APART.

WE KNOW THAT THERE'S A LOT OF

SMART PEOPLE INSIDE OF THE PRIME

MINISTER'S OFFICE AND HIS CHIEF

OF STAFF KATIE TELFORD IS ONE OF

THEM.

BUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN

THESE TWO PEOPLE, THE PRIME

MINISTER AND GERRY BUTTS, I

THINK IT WAS DIFFERENT.

WE TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT A

LITTLE BIT EARLIER IN THE

SHOW IN TERMS OF THEIR PERSONAL

RELATIONSHIP.

WHAT WOULD YOU IMAGINE THAT THIS

DEPARTURE WOULD DO TO THEIR

STRATEGY OVER THE NEXT FEW

MONTHS?

WE'RE LEADING UP TO THE

ELECTION.

AND, EVEN THE ELECTION, MAYBE

HE'LL GET INVOLVED BUT FOR NOW

WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT DEPARTURE

WILL DO?

ANDREW, WHY DON'T YOU START AND

THEN ROB.

>> IT'S HUGE.

LOOK, JUSTIN TRUDEAU MAY HAVE

MANY STRENGTHS BUT NO ONE THINKS

THAT HE'S THE GENIUS OF THIS

GOVERNMENT AND NO ONE THINKS

THAT HE'S THE ORGINISATION OR

THE STRATEGIC

GENIUS OF THIS GOVERNMENT.

GERRY BUTTS WAS VERY MUCH THE

BRAINS BEHIND THE PRIME

MINISTER.

ANSO TO LOSE HIM AT THIS STAGE

WITH ONLY A

FEW MONTHS TO THE ELECTION, IF

HE IS A DISTRACTION IT TAKES

THAT AWAY TO SOME EXTENT.

BUT YOU'RE ALSO LOSING AN

ENORMOUS RESERVOIR OF KNOWLEDGE

AND BACKGROUND.

AND KNOWING HOW THE PRIME

MINISTER THINKS AND HOW HE TICKS

AND KEEPING HIM ON BOARD AND

KEEPING HIM STABLE IN THE FACE

OF HUGE PRESSURES.

THIS IS A HUGE LOSS TO THE

GOVERNMENT AND TO THE PRIME

MINISTER PERSONALLY.

>> Rosemary: ROB?

>> YEAH, MR. BUTTS WAS ALREADY

DEEP INTO ELECTION PREP AND WAS

TALKING TO A LOT OF STAFFERS

ABOUT WHAT THEY NEEDED TO DO AND

HOW THEY NEEDED TO FRAME THE

ELECTION.

AND WAS TELLING PEOPLE, FOR

INSTANCE, THINGS LIKE IF THIS IS

A MULTIPLE

CHOICE ELECTION, WE'LL BE FINE.

AND IF IT BECOMES A REFERENDUM

ON JUSTIN TRUDEAU WE'LL BE IN

TROUBLE.

SO HE WAS ALREADY TRYING TO

FRAME THE ELECTION FOR PEOPLE,

AND DEEPLY INVOLVED THAT WAY.

AND ALSO A LOT OF PEOPLE THOUGHT

THAT HE WAS THE IDEA OR THE

INCARNATION OF THE TRUDEAU, THE

YOUNGER NEOLIBERAL.

AND WITH THAT GONE A LOT OF

THOSE IDEAS MIGHT BE GONE.

BUT I'M OLD AND I DO REMEMBER

BERNARD BENOÎT, WHO WAS A VERY,

VERY GOOD

FRIEND OF BRIAN MULRONEY'S AND

WAS THE CHIEF OF STAFF AS WELL

AND HE LEFT AFTER SOME

MESSINESS.

AND DEREK BURNEY CAME IN AND

CLEANED THINGS UP AND

MR. MULRONEY'S GOVERNMENT WENT

TO HAVE SOME SUCCESSES, NOTABLY

ON FREE TRADE.

SO YOU CAN PIVOT AND MOVE ON.

>> Rosemary: THE LAST

QUESTION, WE DID TWO "AT ISSUE"

LAST WEEK, ROB, IF YOU'RE

WATCHING AND NOW WE'RE ON OUR

FIRST FOR THIS WEEK.

WE'LL DO AT LEAST TWO THIS WEEK.

DO YOU THINK THAT WE ARE NEARING

THE END OF IT OR REALLY RAMPING

UP TOWARDS SOMETHING ELSE,

ANDREW?

>> NOT BY ANY MEANS AND NOT ONLY

ON THIS ISSUE.

THERE'S ALSO THE QUESTION OF THE

VICE ADMIRAL TRIAL WHERE THERE'S

ALLEGATIONS OR SUGGESTIONS THAT

THE PRIME

MINISTER'S OFFICE AND THE

OFFICIALS WITHIN THAT WERE TOO

CLOSELY INVOLVED THERE.

>> Rosemary: YEAH.

>> AND THE OTHER ISSUE THAT

PEOPLE COULD RAISE IS IT HEALTHY

TO HAVE A PRIME MINISTER WHO IS

SO DEPENDENT AND SO CLOSE TO ONE

PERSON BECAUSE THERE'S BEEN

GRUMBLING ABOUT THE HANDLING OF

OTHER ISSUES AND WITH A MORE

NORMAL

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A PRIME

MINISTER AND HIS PRINCIPAL

SECRETARY, YOU MAY HAVE SEEN

THIS PARTS OF THE WAYS COME

EARLIER.

BUT WHEN SOMEONE IS SO CLOSE TO

YOU PERSONALLY AND YOU'RE SO

DEPENDENT ON THEM MAYBE YOU GET

TO THE POINT THAT UNLESS THINGS

GET REALLY SERIOUS AND REALLY

BAD, YOU CAN'T LET GO.

>> Rosemary: ROB?

>> IT'S ALL IN THE HANDS OF JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD NOW.

IF SHE WANTED TO WREAK VENGEANCE

ON HER GOVERNMENT, SHE'S

CERTAINLY DONE THAT.

THE GOVERNMENT AS I SAID IS IN

SOME CHAOS.

SHE'S NOW MANAGED TO ENGINEER

THE DEPARTURE OF THE PRINCIPAL

SECRETARY TO THE PRIME MINISTER.

IF THAT'S ENOUGH FOR HER, SHE

MAY SAY I INFLICTED DAMAGE AND

THAT'S ENOUGH DAMAGE IF I WANT

TO STAY A LIBERAL.

IF NOT, IF SHE CHOOSES TO SPEAK

AND SPEAK IN A MORE ACCUSATORY

TONE, THIS MUSHROOM CLOUD WILL

CONTINUE TO BILLOW OUT FURTHER.

>> Rosemary: WE'LL ALL BE

INTERESTED TO SEE IF JODY

WILSON-RAYBOULD SHOWS UP AT WORK

TOMORROW.

THAT WILL BE AN INTERESTING

PLACE TO START.

THANK YOU, EVERYBODY, FOR THIS

HE'S AT EASE WITH THE BIGGEST

STARS BUT AS STING HIMSELF SAYS,

EVENTUALLY YOU HAVE TO GO BACK

TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM.

HIS MUSICAL "THE LAST SHIP" IS

NOW PLAYING IN TORONTO AND FOR

THE FIRST TIME HE IS NOW

STARRING IN IT.

HE OPENED UP TO OUR SENIOR

CORRESPONDENT, SUSAN ORMISTON

ABOUT HIS LIFE AND HOW HIS OWN

WORKING-CLASS ORIGINS INFORMED

THIS LABOUR OF LOVE.

>> Reporter: "THE LAST SHIP"

IS A PERSONAL PASSION.

HE WROTE ALL OF THE SONGS AND

STARS IN THE TORONTO PRODUCTION.

CERTAINLY NOT HIS FIRST

PERFORMANCE HERE.

WELCOME BACK.

>> NICE TO BE BACK.

>> Reporter: TO TORONTO AND TO

CANADA.

>> VERY EXCITED TO BE HERE.

>> Reporter: YOU CAME I THINK

TO TORONTO FOR THE FIRST TIME

TO TORONTO FOR THE FIRST TIME

ALMOST MORE THAN 40 YEARS AGO,

1978 AT THE HORSESHOE TAVERN.

AND HERE YOU ARE, THE YOUNG

STING.

[laughter]

>> I'VE GOT A COMPASS AROUND MY

NECK FOR SOME REASON.

I DON'T QUITE KNOW.

I WAS TRYING TO FIND MY WAY HOME

>> Reporter: STING'S MUSICAL

IS FORGED FROM HIS UPBRINGING IN

A SHIPBUILDING TOWN IN ENGLAND.

IT'S ABOUT THE DIGNITY OF WORK

AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THAT WORK

DISAPPEARS.

>> I THINK THAT THE THEMES OF

THE PLAY ARE RESONATE WITH THE

WORLD SITUATION.

YOU KNOW, WHERE PEOPLE ARE

THE PLAY ARE RESONATE WITH THE

WORLD SITUATION.

YOU KNOW, WHERE PEOPLE ARE

LOSING THEIR JOBS TO AUTOMATION

OR TO ABSTRACT ECONOMIC QUERIES

WITH EXCISE THE VALUE OF

COMMUNITY.

THAT'S HAPPENING EVERYWHERE.

IT'S HAPPENING IN THE MIDWEST OF

AMERICA.

I KNOW THAT IT'S HAPPENING

HERE --

>> Reporter: G.M. IN OSHAWA.

>> SO THE THEMES OF THE PLAY

ARE, YOU KNOW, VERY TOPICAL.

>> Reporter: SO WHAT DOES HE

DO?

>> THE REASON THAT WE'RE HERE IS

WE WANTED TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT

AND SOLIDARITY FOR YOUR CAUSE

HERE.

>> Reporter: WELL, LAST WEEK

HE TOOK THE CAST OUT TO OSHAWA

CLOSING.

>> YOU DESERVE TO BE LOOKED

AFTER BETTER BY THE COMPANY THAT

YOU'VE SUPPORTED.

IT'S VERY SIMPLE.

>> Reporter: BUT STING HAS THE

PEDIGREE, HE SHAPED HIS

CHARACTER IN AN INDUSTRY TOWN.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR

WITH WALLSEND AND NEW CASTLE.

>> I WAS BORN WITHIN SPITTING

DISTANCE OF A SHIPYARD.

MY EARLIEST MEMORIES WERE THE

BOWS OF

GIANT SHIPS TOWERING OVER OUR

HOUSE.

I WALKED THOUSANDS OF MEN WALK

INTO THAT SHIPYARD EVERY MORNING

AS A CHILD AND I'D WATCH THE

SAME MEN COME BACK HOME EVERY

NIGHT.

I WONDERED AS A KID IS THIS MY

DESTINY?

AND THERE WAS VERY LITTLE ELSE

IN THE TOWN TO DO.

MY GRANDFATHER WORKED IN THE

YARDS AND MY FATHER BUILT

TURBINES AND THAT'S THE LAST

THING THAT I WANTED TO DO.

>> Reporter: AND YET YOU HAVE

SPENT THE

LAST DECADE OF YOUR LIFE PUTTING

IT BACK TOGETHER AND VISITING IT

ALMOST EVERY MOMENT OF YOUR

EXISTENCE.

SO WHY?

>> IT'S ALMOST LIKE A DEBT I

HAVE TO PAY FOR THE COMMUNITY

THAT CREATED ME.

THE ENGINE THAT DROVE ME TO

ESCAPE CAME FROM THIS COMMUNITY.

BUT IN LATER LIFE YOU REALIZE

THAT, YOU KNOW, LIKE A SALMON

YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO YOUR

SPAWNING GROUND AT SOME POINT

AND MAKE SENSE OF THE WHOLE

SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE.

AND YOU HAVE TO COME TO TERMS

WITH THE GHOSTS THAT YOU LEFT

BEHIND.

SO REALLY IT'S A -- IT'S A

SEARCH FOR MYSELF.

* YOU SAID THAT YOU SEE THIS

WORK IN YOUR HANDS *

* IT PROBABLY FITS YOU NOW MY

SON *

* TAKE THEM NOW, WHY DON'T YOU

TRY THEM ON *

>> Reporter: PART OF THE

SEARCH IS AN EXPLORATION OF THE

FRACTIOUS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A

FATHER AND A SON WHICH IS DEEPLY

BIOGRAPHICAL.

>> I STUDIED IN SCHOOL AND GOT A

SCHOLARSHIP AND WENT TO GRAMMAR

SCHOOL AND WAS TAUGHT FRENCH AND

LATIN AND PHILOSOPHY AND

HISTORY.

AND MY DAD WASN'T VERY

SUPPORTIVE OF THAT.

BECAUSE HE WANTED ME TO HAVE A

TECHNICAL EDUCATION, SOMETHING

THAT HE UNDERSTOOD.

MISCONSTRUED AS BEING TOO

CONTROLLING.

AND CURLED *

* WHEN A FELLA NEEDS A JOB AND A

OLD MAN'S BOOTS *

>> Reporter: "DEAD MAN'S

BOOTS" IS ABOUT THAT TROUBLED

RELATIONSHIP AND WHEN STING AND

I TALKED FIVE YEARS AGO HE TOLD

ME MORE ABOUT HIS DAD.

HE DIDN'T GET WHAT YOU DID IN

THE BEGINNING.

DID HE EVER?

>> I THINK THAT TOWARDS THE END

BEGRUDGINGLY, YES.

WE HAD THE SAME HANDS -- EXACTLY

THE SAME HANDS.

AND MY FATHER HAD NEVER NOTICED

THAT BEFORE, AND HE WAS DYING.

I SAID THAT TO HIM AND HE SAID,

WELL, YOU

USE YOUR HANDS BETTER THAN I

DID.

* HIS KINDNESS

HE HAD NEVER PAID ME A

COMPLIMENT BEFORE SO THE TIMING

WAS DEVASTATING.

* I'M TIRED OF ALL OF THE

ARGUMENTS *

* THERE WILL BE NO MORE

* YOU WILL DIE BEFORE YOU SEE ME

IN YOUR DEAD MAN'S BOOTS *

>> Reporter: HIS FATHER IS

GONE NOW, BUT AT 67 STING HAS

HIS OWN FAMILY.

SIX GROWN CHILDREN, INCLUDING A

DAUGHTER, ELLIOTT SUMTER.

(*)

SHE FOLLOWED HIS LEAD AND ALSO

JOE SUMTER, ALSO A MUSICIAN.

(*)

(singing)

HOW DOES THAT AFFECT YOUR

RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CHILDREN,

YOUR SON IS A MUSICIAN AND ONE

OF YOUR DAUGHTERS IS A MUSICIAN.

>> YOU HAVE TO ASK THEM.

I'M NOT SURE HOW GOOD A PARENT I

AM, UM... AT ALL.

SO REALLY IT'S A QUESTION THEY

HAVE TO ANSWER.

I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MY TIME ON

THE ROAD.

THEY'VE BEEN GIVEN GREAT

PRIVILEGES BUT, YOU KNOW,

WHETHER OR NOT I'M A GOOD FATHER

OR NOT, I DON'T KNOW, ASK THEM.

I TRIED MY BEST.

>> Reporter: WHEN THEY MAKE

DECISIONS THAT YOU THINK ARE

ILL-ADVISED DO YOU THINK BACK TO

YOUR FATHER AND SAY I HAVE TO

LET THEM RUN BECAUSE LOOK WHAT

HAPPENED TO ME?

>> I HAVE TO LET THEM RUN, I

TRUST THEM.

I TRUST THEM.

I HAVE TWO MUSICIANS, TWO

ACTORS, A FILMMAKER AND MY

YOUNGEST ONE WANTS TO BE A COP.

BECAUSE HE SAYS OH, YOU'RE ALL

CREATIVE AND HE USED THE TERM

THAT I WANT TO DO SOMETHING

USEFUL FOR SOCIETY.

AND I'M TOTALLY IN SUPPORT OF

HIM.

>> Reporter: "THE LAST SHIP"

2014 BUT STING WASN'T IN IT.

REVIEWS WERE DECENT AND IT WAS

NOMINATED FOR TWO TONY AWARDS

BUT THE THEATRE DIDN'T SELL OUT

AND IT WAS REPORTEDLY LOSING

MONEY.

WHAT HAPPENED ON BROADWAY, IT

CLOSED EARLIER THAN YOU WANTED

AND YOU STEPPED IN TO REVIVE THE

PRODUCTION THERE, WHAT HAPPENED?

>> IT'S NOT AN EASY SUBJECT FOR

A BROADWAY AUDIENCE.

IT'S A DIFFICULT THING -- WE'RE

GOING TO WATCH A PLAY ABOUT

OUT-OF-WORK SHIPYARD

WORKERS, HMM, MAYBE NOT.

SO I WENT IN THERE TO, YOU KNOW,

BOOST TICKET SALES AND WE DID.

BUT I COULD ONLY DO IT FOR A

MONTH BECAUSE I HAD A TOUR

CONTRACT WITH PAUL SIMON.

(*)

AND THEN WE BROUGHT IT BACK TO

ENGLAND AND WE PLAYED IT IN MY

HOMETOWN, A SPIRITUAL HOME, IF

YOU LIKE.

AND THEN THE MERVISHS CAME TO

SEE IT IN DUBLIN AND LOVED IT

>> Reporter: YOU SAID IN 2013

THAT THERE WAS NO PART FOR YOU

IT, THAT I KNEW THIS CHARACTER

KNEW HIS WEAKNESSES AND I

KNEW HIS STRENGTHS.

AND I'M VERY HAPPY TO BE PLAYING

SO I'M GLAD THAT I MADE THAT

DECISION TO SAY YES.

>> Reporter: BUT YOU COULD

HAVE SAID, OKAY, TRIED THAT, HAD

A LIMITED RUN, GOING TO LEAVE

IT.

BUT YOU DIDN'T.

YOU ARE REVIVING IT.

WHY?

WE GOT A STANDING OVATION EVERY

NIGHT.

>> Reporter: YOU CHANGED IT.

TELL ME HOW.

PROBABLY MORE POLITICAL NOW THAN

IT WAS.

IT WAS IMPORTANT TO GO TO

ENGLAND WHEN PEOPLE KNEW THE

REALITY, THE TOUGH REALITY OF

THAT SITUATION TO BE MORE

TRUTHFUL TO THAT.

IT'S LESS SENTIMENTAL THAN IT

WAS.

IT'S TOUGHER.

Freezing rain headed for western NC mountains and foothills Tuesday into Wednesday Raleigh News a

February 18, 2019 04:58 PM

A winter weather advisory has been for western North Carolinas mountains and foothills, with freezing rain expected late Tuesday into Wednesday.

Forecasters believe the wintry mix will stop just west of Mecklenburg County and Charlotte, with brief periods of freezing rain expected in nearby Iredell, Catawba, Rowan, Cleveland and Lincoln counties.

Freezing rain will fall in the mountains and the foothills from around 6 p.m. Tuesday through 4 p.m. Wednesday, and will include 35 mph gusts and ice accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch, says the NWS.

The precipitation may begin as a mix of sleet and freezing rain late Tuesday before transitioning over to all freezing rain the rest of Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, . Accumulating ice is likely through at least midday, especially along and north of Interstate 40.

The chance of rain is 60 to 80 percent in the western half of the state Tuesday night through Saturday, says the NWS.

In the Charlotte region, rain will start to fall around after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

More than an inch and a half of rain could fall in the Charlotte area Tuesday through Sunday, while areas in the southwestern mountains could see four to nearly five inches, . Flooding in the mountains will remain a threat through Sunday.

Monday AM Update: Winter Storm WATCH in the NC mountains! Potential for sleet freezing rain Tue PM through Wed AM. Still quite a bit of rain expected this week, but totals are down a asterisk little asterisk . Could see some thunder thrown in, esp Thu Sun aftns. Can we get a kitchen sink?

1987 P US Dime Moving P Mint LOOK FOR THESE IN YOUR CHANGE - Duration: 8:03.

Hello all you coin aficionados out there and Welcome to the DC Coin World International Coin Channel

Today we're going to look into the mystery of the 1987 Philadelphia Mint Mark US Dime

We have a bunch of these dimes here in they are set up

in a kind of a weird fashion with a couple different colored backgrounds below

I'll tell you why we're doing that in a second as we go through them

but first let's take a good look at the 1987 United States dime

we can see it says right on the top that says "Liberty" with Franklin Roosevelt facing to the left

"In God We Trust" under his chin right here we have a J and an S and that's for John Sinnock

who was the the engraver of these dimes. there's a 1987 and there is a P right here

the P is for the Philadelphia Mint and we can see that this this one has the P on it

The P is centered exactly over the 7 so one line of the P comes down to

the front of the 7 the other end of the P comes down to the back of the 7

This is the regular P mint mark of the 1987 P

you see this one's tilted a little bit but it's not it's only because of the camera so if I tilt it bsck it is straight above the 7

You can see that these are all straight over the top of the 7

But if we look over here however and we blow this one up

we'll see that the P on this one is about halfway between the 8 and 7

see how it kind of moved over a little bit the P here

this is a pretty bad shape coin in the sense that it got kind of beat and scraped but see how the P is way over

there to the left almost between the two and then if we go back to this one it's

over there and one of the ways we can take a good look at it to just take one

of these put it right over the top we see the P here

straight over the top of the 7 the P here in between the 7 any 8 and

that's not as far as it goes because if we go over even a little further we see

this one's exactly between the 8 and the 7 so if we look at this mint mark

here P which is straight over the top where it's supposed to be and then this

one over here which is like halfway between we're going hey wait a second

what's going on with the peas at the Philadelphia Mint and we can if we look

at these to see how clearly that's right over the top and that's in the middle

well some people say well maybe that's a D for the Denver mint. I should say that I have not seen any

D's that have been offset like that and I do have a D here and this is how the D

should look and this is not a D here this is a misshapen P

some of this might be post mint damage (PMD) from the misshapen part

but PMD certainly didn't move the P mint mark over between the 8 and 7

I looked this up online and it turns out to just quite a few of these around in fact if you look on eBay at

the 1987 you'll see that it moves from here to here in the middle to here way

over in the middle and then it also does something else that's interesting so

this is a regular one again it starts to tilt on some of them so see how this P

actually starts going to the left a little bit it actually tilts in this one

tilts way to the left so it's at the right point on the 7 but it

tilts so instead of going straight up and down see that tilt here so let's

move this middle one out of the way and you can see it very clearly on this one

this one's going straight up and down this one kind of going off to the side

it quite an angle there too in fact that's not as far as that angle goes it

can even go further over and I'll show you on these ones so these ones are

tilted also so see how especially this one see how

much of a tilt is on there it's way up high off the top of the P see there's a

lot more space between that P and this P it's either a little bit of space there

and a huge amount of space there see how this one tips over this one tips over

and so we get this kind of weird issue with these Philadelphia mint marks and

it's both to look like this this one it's a little further up and it's tilted

this one it's a little closer and it's tilted so we have essentially we have

the tilt like this one we have the regular oh the other tilt like this one

so that that was just a different kind of tilt see how that's way off we have

the regular which I'll bring in over here we have the one who it's where it's

centered almost between the 8 and the 7 and then we have this really weird

one where it actually is centered but it looks more like a D than a P so when we

started looking for the Philadelphia mint mark from 1987 we get all kinds of

different variations I should say that out of about fifty I looked at, thirty something were

exactly like this and then we started getting some tilted some in the center

and then some way over like this tilted the other way and I've seen someone

lined it with a piece actually over the top of this eight this eight and so I

don't know what they did I looked it up online and I said is there anybody that

kind of knows what happened with these and one of the Numista websites there

was a guy named ESSOR PROF who said that all the dies for these coins are made at the

Philadelphia Mint and then after the dies are made they hand stamp on the mint mark

And so he said he assumes that when they stamped the mint mark on

have to do it on a number of different dyes in somebody probably in 1987

He was talking about 1988 also, somebody when they stamped the mint mark on the

dies before they used them they stamped them individually by hand with a rod and

that rod was not held steadily by the man who was hand stamping the P

onto the coin die and so a bunch of these different variations came about from

that hand stamping alright well that's all we have today from a DC Coin World International Coin Channel

Look for some 1987 dimes and see if you can find them

also with these different variations we also started seeing this when we will

looked in the 1988 dimes and so look for some of them also because the 1988 dimes

have some of the same variations as the 1987 dime some of the centering issues some of

the tilting issues and some of the most interesting mint marks that I've ever

seen on US coins alright have a great day from the DC Coin World International Coin Channel

Margot Robbie 'returning' as Harley Quinn for James Gunn's Suicide Squad 2 - Duration: 2:06.

Harley Quinn is said to be returning for the Suicide Squad sequel from James Gunn

It was unknown whether the Gotham minx played by Margot Robbie would return for the sequel to the David Ayer film, rumoured to be called The Suicide Squad, considering her appearance in next year's Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Now after confirmation that fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn would be taking over directing duties from Ayer in the sequel Suicide Squad, it now seems she will be in the film after all

"I have learned from sources close to production that in fact, the information about Harley Quinn being absent from the new Suicide Squad  movie is no longer up to date," a source told Forbes

"She is indeed expected to appear in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad , which is expected to begin production later this year

" One potential film that has fallen by the wayside, however, is the Joker and Harley Quinn film, along with Jared Leto's solo Joker film, leaving the actor's future as the Clown Prince of Crime in doubt

Robbie will not appear as the Joker's girlfriend in this year's Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix, which has no connections to the DC Expanded Universe films

It was also revealed by Forbes that there is currently no Gotham City Sirens film with Poison Ivy and Catwoman teaming up with Harley in the works, and that the Birds of Prey film has no connection to the planned Batgirl solo film centred on Barbara Gordon - despite the comic history between the character and super team

The Suicide Squad is released on August 6, 2021, while Harley Quinn can next be seen in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020

Test Packing For Long-Term RTW Travel with Kids: Part 1 - Duration: 3:17.

Aloha

It's a dreary Saturday so we're going to do some test packing this suitcase is

what we're going to take all of our non clothes identical when we do our next

adventure normally we try to pack pretty light but since we're going indefinitely

there are some items other than clothes and toiletries that we're going to pack

so let's see what face here are some items we're hoping to bring that won't

fit in our carry-on bags like this little booster seat that I shall use

when we travel throughout Vietnam now it's kind of charm and we'll see if it

Okay so we're not sure about this pan. Um, this filled up really fast.

With the fold-up booster seat -

Kaisho's scooter, the one frying pan you got a tumbler our silverware, his box of toys a

pink bag is gonna have harumi's blanket and like her training pants in it

and extra things cause she'll be just a toddler. I wanted to bring at least one potty as well as

for travel potty and I've got the two kids towels and

other than being a little things in between and maybe some jackets it's pretty

full already. Ideally I would like to bring both of

these pans because they're really good quality and stainless steel. We will be

staying a lot of Airbnb and places where we can cook so the idea is to use our

stuff in Japan so hopefully... We're gonna have to try this again

and see if there is someway we can get that to fit.

Ok, so what we had to do was move Kaisho's toys from the box and then put them into his backpack instead

Because that's the only way we could fit the frying pan down here.

So now we have the frying pan and the pot next to each other

And then Kaisho can fill just this backpack up with his toys.

He has a smaller backpack to use as his daypack.

We added umm... Also the extra pieces to his ridesafer are in this bag.

And then, we have a pacsafe packing cage. We added that in as well.

And I'm sure we'll find lots of little things to fill in the cracks.

But basically with these main things in two sides it's able to close.

So, this is for your toys now, okay?

Ha ha!

( ninja sound effects )

( laughing )

All right let's hope it's under 50 pounds.

Yay! 48 pounds.

you
