Waching daily May 20 2018

This old dog was surrendered for being stupid but shelter staff refused to give up on him

Deciding their 18 year old pooch was more trouble than he was worth a pair of dog owners took him to the local vet clinic

For what? They thought would be the last time there

They told staff the little poodle was stupid and that they'd had their fill of him

But the animal medics weren't so heartless. They reckoned there was life in that old dog yet

Given the poodles advanced years. It's not really surprising that his life was on the wane

The poor old pooch was blind and had lost all his teeth

Moreover arthritis had gotten a grip on his frail old legs and he'd begun to suffer the odd accident back home

But was that really reason enough to cast him adrift?

Sadly his owner seemed to think so perhaps reasoning that his days were numbered

anyway

They decided to have their pet put down at a nearby veterinary clinic in

addition to saying that one of them didn't like the animal when asked why they were surrendering the dog the

California couple replied that the dog was stupid

It was a callous comment for sure and possibly even cruel but did the vet staff agree?

Happily, they didn't the animal medics carried out a full examination of the dog and while it was true that his best days were behind

Him, they saw no reason to end his life

Instead of a stupid dog the staff saw a gorgeous fluffy little poodle who certainly deserved better than to be put down

What's more they knew some other people would agree

And those people were the folks at Montville senior dog rescue as its name implies mutt villas a San Francisco

Organization that specializes in helping and rehoming senior dogs and happily it had space for one more

Not that the little pooch would take up that much room seeing as he tipped the scales at a measly six pounds

But with the dog lacked in weight, he more than made up for in heart

You see even with his rickety legs and dodgy teeth

He wasn't in that bad shape at all for a dog of eighteen

In fact, according to pedigrees Dog calculator if the little guy were human he'd be an impressive 105 years old

Naming the ownerless pooch Figgy workers at marvel then decided to think about how they could best help him

Clearly Figgy wasn't going to be around for that much longer

And to make things worse mutt ville staff reckoned the senior dog. Probably had brain tumor, too

Many places might have elected to euthanize the poor old pooch, but not mutt ville

well

The chances of dogs figis age getting adopted are slim the shelter staff still believe that he deserved a chance to join a loving home

And they should know that's because each year Montville rescues around a thousand dogs

of course the shelter didn't give up on Figgy but conscious that the dog had been through a bit of an ordeal the

Organization's founder Cheri Franklin decided that housing Figgy in with the rest of Marvel's intake wasn't the best course of action

Instead she had another plan up her sleeve

Cheri reckoned the best place for Figgy was somewhere a little closer to home or home to be exact

So the pair of them headed to Franklin's house for a much-needed spot of R&R

meanwhile, the organization wrote an online post bigging up Figgy in the hope of finding him a warm place where he could live out the

rest of his days

This sweet elderly gentleman may be past his prime but still has a lot of love left to give the post read

Could you be the special person to give him the care he deserves and Nestle alongside?

The well chosen pros was an adorable photo of Figgy. How could anyone resist?

Well, the answer is they couldn't figure might have been a poorly senior

But he still had an admirable zest for life and one person knew straight away that he was just the dog for her

What's more she had previous experience when it came to adopting senior dogs from Marvel's ranks?

That person was a lady called Aileen who's pictured here on the right?

Something of a veteran herself at least in the adoption stakes Aileen has cared for many a pooch to pass through models kennels

And she was delighted with her latest acquisition as she made clear to the dodo. There's something about him that called to me. She said

He had been advertised on Montville website as a hospice dog

Which basically meant that he had very little time left

The organization states that it's hospice program entails taking a dog into your home and giving it palliative care

Love and a wonderful life until it's their time for euthanasia

Simply put these animals are seeking a warm and caring environment in which to dream about chasing until doggy heaven beckons

Moreover Marvel has a number of individuals and families on its books who offer hospice care to its dogs

For auspice hero Eileen figgy was the fifth such animal that she had cared for given Eileen's obvious experience with such vulnerable pets

Figgy certainly landed on his paws and his touching story began to spread far and wide as

Well as appearing on Marvel's website the poodles eventful journey was also given the film treatment and shared on the shelter's Facebook page

referring to the hounds new life with carer Eileen the post accompanying the video said now figgy is safe warm and loved and there was

music to a lot of people's ears

So far the videos had over

200,000 views and those who have seen it have expressed gratitude to the shelter and shared their own similar stories

Ronda Pierce Moreno is one I

Rescue senior dogs because I want to make their golden years as wonderful as possible and give them the love they deserve she wrote

Thank-you Mudville for finding homes for seniors

She continued they deserve good homes with caring people to live out the rest of their lives knowing what love is

Elizabeth Warren was awesome. Keen did praise Montville. Thank you for stepping in and helping Figgy she wrote

I just cannot fathom people and she wasn't the only one

plenty of other online users expressed disbelief at the behavior of the couple who had abandoned figgy and a lot of anger was directed at

The woman who wanted to get rid of the dog one particular comment by Naomi Liz be resonated with many others who viewed Marvel's video

Hope you're dumped when you're old it read your husband should have dumped you because you're cruel and disgusting

Wish remaining love filled days for this precious, baby

Indeed Liz B's no-holds-barred approach has received the most likes of all comments written so far

words aside though

This is a story that ended beautifully

thanks to the dedication of Montville and the goodness of Eileen Piggy's found a place to live out the remainder of his doggy days and

It's good to know that in a world where being thought of as stupid could cost a pet. Its life

They're decent folk ready to challenge that thinking

Canberran John Paynter calls for euthanasia legalisation to stop others from his wife's 'torture' - Duration: 9:08.

Canberran John Paynter calls for euthanasia legalisation to stop others from his wife's 'torture'

John Paynter loved his wife Mary Ann so much that in her final days he thought about killing her.

She battled cancer for years, but its her last seven days that still haunt him.

The last thing she said to me with big blue eyes, she said Im scared, he said.

She was just so strong, she never did that.

For a week at the Canberra Hospital just over two years ago, Mrs Paynter clung to life in palliative care.

She was constantly struggling to breathe, she was coughing, she was groaning, she was moaning, he said.

Sometimes shed scream.

I did think of smothering her but then I just couldnt bring myself to do it … thats how desperate you get.

He asked if doctors could perform surgery for the chance shed die on the table but he was told the risk was too great and staff could do no harm.

It would have been a good way to go, instead of a week of horrible suffering, he said.

He begged for more morphine but was again told the risk of death was too high.

Then theres the sedatives and they said no, shes already had one, we cant give her any more.

God forbid she gets addicted.

Theres no logic..

Mr Paynter now suffers from post traumatic stress disorder from witnessing what he describes as torture.

I had a cat that died, he said.

If my vet had done to my cat exactly what the Canberra Hospital did to my wife, they would lose their licence.

They planned to go out together.

Mr Paynter is one of dozens of Canberrans calling for their right to choose to die.

An ACT Legislative Assembly inquiry into end of life choices received a record number of submissions and began hearing evidence this week.

Mr Paynter says changing the laws in the ACT is his main purpose in life now that his wife is gone.

We had decided years ago we were going to go out together when we got really old, he said.

She was my soulmate of 38 years.

Anne Yuille, 70, is also determined to make her own decisions about dying.

She watched her elderly parents die two very different deaths, one luckier than the other.

Her father died suddenly while on a family holiday to the beach, after bathing in the water and sitting down on a rock.

He slipped into a coma and died a few hours later.

Whereas my mother died of starvation and organ shutdown over a number of weeks, she said.

We suffered watching her suffer.

She says shes been affected by David Goodalls recent journey to Switzerland to end his life at 104, surrounded by family.

It struck me then that I probably wont have the financial resources, particularly by his age, to do that, she said.

Assisted dying advocates say its that inequity that leaves some people contemplating violent deaths.

Focus on palliative care.

But Calvary Health Care, a Catholic not-for-profit and the main provider of palliative care in the ACT, says governments should be focusing on funding palliative care over assisted dying.

Director of palliative care Suharsha Kanathigoda says hes only ever had a few patients ask about the issue.

If I find out the reasons behind it and I can put something in place to alleviate the issue, I think most of the time they will actually change their mind, he said.

A lot of people lack the knowledge of what palliative care can provide.

Calvary says it will not offer assisted dying if it is legalised in the ACT.

Its definitely isnt a religious issue … we dont believe in assisted dying because we believe we can actually manage most of the symptoms, he said.

Dr Kanathigoda is concerned about elder abuse and older or sick people being coerced to take part.

There is a possibility that people might be either coerced into it or might feel guilty about worrying others and might actually take that option, he said.

He says while governments are beginning to invest in palliative care, more resources are needed.

Im talking about infrastructure, human resources, equipment, he said.

I think we can actually provide a better service to our community thereby reducing the need of our community to access assisted dying.

About 47 per cent of the 487 submissions to the inquiry argue against assisted dying, while 42 per cent support it.

The majority of the submissions from health-related organisations dont present a position either way.

Of the five health groups arguing against assisted dying in their submissions, four have a religious affiliation.

Polling shows between 65 and 80 per cent of people believe they should have the choice to access assisted dying.

Federal Government roadblock.

Regardless of the inquirys findings, the ACT government is prevented from legislating for assisted dying because of a two-decade-old federal bill introduced by conservative MP Kevin Andrews.

It was done in response to the Northern Territory legalising euthanasia in 1995, under a Constitutional power that allows the federal government to make any laws for the territories.

The Federal Government has previously said it does not intend to repeal the bill, however Greens leader Richard Di Natale and Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm have their own private legislation before the Senate to reverse it.

ACT Human Rights Commissioner Helen Watchirs believes the law limits the human rights of Canberrans by restricting their ability to participate in public life.

She says the Constitutional power should ultimately be removed.

Its a very old constitutional power, she said.

Green roofs for Australian cities would help reduce flooding and save on bills, study shows - Duration: 6:53.

Green roofs for Australian cities would help reduce flooding and save on bills, study shows

Its a bold vision for Australias future.

The grey roofs of city buildings transformed into a green canopy.

City councils — including Sydney and Melbourne — have been nurturing the green roof concept for about a decade.

But progress has been slow.

Researchers have now published new data further measuring the benefits of these gardens in the sky in the hope that more developers and property owners will take up the idea.

The University of Melbournes Dr Claire Farrell said her team found a 10-centimetre-deep substrate could absorb up to 95 per cent of annual rainfall in Melbourne.

They act like a sponge, she said.

They keep that rainfall from going into creeks and rivers where they cause a lot of damage and carry pollutants.

She said Melbourne was helped by its four seasons in one day because light showers gave roof gardens the best chance of soaking up moisture.

The benefits of capturing run-off also extend to flood prevention.

As cities become more dense, were getting more and more rooftops and more impervious surfaces, Dr Farrell said.

[It] can lead to flash flooding when we have big events in a short period of time.

Associate Professor Nick Williams said green roofs also helped to lower heating and cooling costs.

Modelling for a single-storey brick office with a concrete roof shows potential savings of up to 65 per cent in heating and up to 35 per cent in cooling bills.

But what about a huge office tower?.

For energy savings by itself, you wouldnt add a green roof, he said.

Itd be cheaper to add additional insulation to your building.

But he said when considering all the benefits, green roofs presented a compelling case.

Energy and stormwater and biodiversity and human productivity benefits from looking out on a green space.

Then the value of green roofs really comes to the fore.

The researchers said environmental and economic benefits would be similar for buildings in Adelaide and Sydney where the climate was not completely unlike Melbournes.

But the precise findings for all Australian cities are yet to be established using the universitys methodology.

Green roofs a no brainer for developers.

However, an inner-city oasis does not come cheap.

That is why the researchers have recommended government incentives to boost the industry.

They could include fast-tracked building approvals, relaxed height restrictions or financial grants, according to Paolo Bevilacqua from Frasers Property.

It would be great to see some kind of government incentives in this space, Mr Bevilacqua said.

Humans just love connecting to nature — in that respect its a bit of a no brainer.

The developer helped build One Central Park in the Sydney suburb of Chippendale, with living walls and roofs covered in plants.

Mr Bevilacqua said green roofs and walls make commercial sense for developers.

Any point of difference can help sell, he said.

The green aspects were definitely a key part and definitely helped the sell.

Councillor says progress has been too slow.

Green roofs are far more common in North America and Europe.

Toronto has a bylaw requiring green roofs on developments with a floor area greater than 2,000 square metres.

The measure is currently being considered in Melbourne to encourage green roofs and walls, along with other regulatory changes and incentives.

The Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne are close to finalising a public site for a demonstration green roof.

But Melbourne Councillor Cathy Oke said the administrations powers were limited, with the pace of change largely in private hands.

We cant green the roofs that we dont own, she said.

Progress has definitely been too slow.

On the city councils count, there are currently about 40 green roofs in the central Melbourne area.

The City of Sydneys list shows about 60 green roofs — including at the New South Wales Parliament and the ABCs Ultimo Headquarters.

Cr Oke said the potential in Melbourne was huge considering the council had identified more than 400 hectares of roof space that could be suitable for green roofs.

This is the equivalent to five times the size of Royal Park that we could have on roofs in Melbourne, she said.

Time for the Moon Night is GFRIENDs first title track that wasnt written by producer duo Iggy Yongbae.

When the members were asked what they think is the reason for the songs popularity, they responded, Time for the Moon Night seems to be a song with something that touches your heart when you listen to it.

Everyone probably feels different emotions, but we think that the many people who like Time for the Moon Night are those who have felt something while listening to the song. They wittily added, If there are people who havent felt anything yet, we hope you will listen to it one more time..

The members also shared, Through these promotions, we wanted to widen the music and performance spectrums of GFRIEND. We think that has become reality at least a bit, so it is meaningful.

We have also gained strength to take on our future challenges with more courage..

GFRIEND added, We are of course very thankful for the love given to the song Time for the Moon Night, but we were also glad that lots of interest was shown for our performances.

Ramadan opening still possible for mosque 23 years in the making - Duration: 8:02.

Ramadan opening still possible for mosque 23 years in the making

After 23 years of planning, a $7 million council-required carpark and a case in the High Court, Punchbowls newest mosque is expected to open its doors by the end of Ramadan next month.

Funded by the community — through grants, donations and non-interest-bearing loans — non-profit organisation Australian Islamic Mission (AIM) has been pushing the project since the mid-1990s.

South African-born pharmacist and AIM vice-president Zachariah Matthews has been the builds project-manager for the past three years.

It started way back in 1994 when we rented a prayer hall at 29 Matthews Street, he said.

We bought that property two years later, and bought another two properties on either side, making it into one lot.

Fortunately for AIM, the land was previously owned by another Muslim group who had petitioned for it to be zoned as a place of public worship.

Still, according to Dr Matthews the group faced objections from the local council and ended up taking their request to the High Court in Canberra.

It took them 17 years to get it approved, he said.

Greek-Orthodoxy and a sign from God.

Despite the High Court head-start, AIM still needed someone to design the dream mosque (and in their original plan, an Islamic primary school, too), and the funding to pay for it.

We canvassed, we enquired, and a counsellor suggested we look at Angelo [Candalepas], Dr Matthews said.

Indeed, Mr Candalepas had designed a primary school attached to the All Saints Church in Belmore, but it was Greek Orthodox — the faith of his family.

When Mr Candalepas received the architectural offer from AIM to build a mosque in one of Sydneys biggest Muslim communities, he was surprised, to say the least.

I think the term is freaked out.

I didnt know what to say.

What do you say when someone asks you to do what could be one of the most important buildings [to their community], particularly when their aspirations are so lofty?.

It wasnt an immediate yes, but over coming days Mr Candalepas prayed to God for a sign.

He received a weeks worth.

Leaders from six other religious communities approached Mr Candalepas.

He was asked to design churches and a great synagogue.

Still unconvinced he was the right architect for the Punchbowl mosque, he confided in a Greek-Orthodox priest from one of the parishes also hoping to commission him.

He said, We are all the children of God, and you must do every single one of these projects and they must be the most important projects of your life, Mr Candalepas recalled.

Appalling council regulations.

With an architect on board, designs were taking shape until the Canterbury council issued a stipulation that threatened to blow the entire budget.

The worst example of treachery was in the requirement of the offices of the council to have one car parking space per two people, Mr Candalepas said.

What were creating is a mosque in a place that most people could walk, and yet there was an impost of a car park for 150 cars… its appalling.

Car parks are there for the frequency of use and if you use a church once a week it becomes nonsense, doesnt it, to require everyone to park at that place?.

Due to limited space, a multi-storey carpark was designed to sit underneath the mosque.

But there was another issue.

When they did the geotech survey they hit a water table, so what that meant is that if council insisted on us building the third level we had to water tank that entire third level for the car park, and that potentially could have doubled the cost of the car park, Dr Matthews said.

Fortunately, council reduced their requirement and agreed that a two-storey carpark with 109 spaces would suffice.

Even still, the underground carpark drained more than $7 million from the budget, causing AIM to shelve their idea of an on-site primary school.

Master artist denied visa.

The mosques construction started in October 2015, and it was hoped the space would be open in time for this years Ramadan, which began on May 16.

Bu the delayed visa of one Turkish calligrapher, and the denied visa of his teacher, created a major setback for the intended completion date.

The calligraphers were commissioned to paint the 99 names of God on 99 mini-domes on the ceiling of the mosque, a task that is expected to take two people two to three weeks.

I think everyone thinks if youre a Muslim, youre a terrorist — I shouldnt say that, I think its just so extreme, Mr Candalepas said.

Here we have two gentlemen that want to come to our building and inscribe into the building names of God, and theyre not allowed into this country.

This week, Dr Matthews confirmed that a third calligrapher — who could ostensibly replace the master artist barred from entering the country — has had his papers accepted.

Once the calligraphy is complete, the carpets — a mix of Turkish and New Zealand wool — can be laid, and the Muslim call to prayer will, finally, sound across Matthews Street, Punchbowl.

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho ready to cough up £35m for La Liga star

The Atletico Madrid defender is regarded as one of La Liga's best right-backs.

And according to The Mirror, Mourinho is closing in on one of his top targets.

The Portuguese is expected to spend big again the summer as he looks to overhaul his squad.

United finished second in the league, but they were a whopping 19 points off champions Manchester City.

The Red Devils also slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Chelsea yesterday in the FA Cup final.

Vrsaljko was an important player in Atletico's Europa League triumph over Marseille in midweek.

"Atletico Madrid star Sime Vrsaljko is wanted by Man Utd" The La Liga heavyweights secured a 3-0 win over the French side.

The Croatia international was dismissed in the semi-final first-leg against Arsenal though.

Atletico coughed up £14.5m to snare Vrsaljko from Sassuolo in 2016.

He has three years left to run on his deal, but United have deep pockets and look ready to test Atletico's resolve.

Since making his debut for Atletico, Vrsaljko has racked up 37 appearances in the Spanish top flight.

The 26-year-old will be viewed by Mourinho as a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia.

Melbourne Storm's Curtis Scott sent off for punching Manly's Dylan Walker, breaking his eye socket - Duration: 3:15.

Melbourne Storm's Curtis Scott sent off for punching Manly's Dylan Walker, breaking his eye socket

An all-in brawl saw the Melbourne Storms NRL clash with Manly explode into life last night, costing Curtis Scott a potential State of Origin berth after he left Dylan Walker with a broken eye socket.

Scott threw a flurry of punches at Manlys Walker, leaving the referee no choice but to give the Storm centre his marching orders, making him the first player to be sent off in the NRL since 2015.

Walker and Sea Eagles hooker Apisai Koroisau were also sin-binned for their roles in the handbags, in a match that ended in a drubbing for the hosts, 24-4 in Manlys favour.

Walker has been ruled out for six weeks with the fractured eye socket, in a massive blow for Manly which would have likely shifted the player back to the centres after signing Trent Hodkinson last week.

The timing is dreadful for Scott, who faces a lengthy ban for his actions, with Blues Origin coach Brad Fittler likely to stage a huge clean-out of the NSW team.

As well as showing he can handle the big stage as a premiership centre last season, the tough 20-year-old has formed a threatening left-edge combination with NSW certainty Josh Addo-Carr.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy was disappointed Scott reacted so poorly to the niggle from Walker.

He needs to learn from this, Bellamy said.

One thing you like about him is that hes really competitive and thats the first time hes done that but he will learn from that because its going to be fairly costly to us and to him as well.

The drama was only beginning following the brawl, as Walker and Koroisau returned to the field, only for the Storms head of football, Frank Ponissi to protest on the sidelines, claiming the timekeepers had made an error, allowing the pair to come back before their 10-minute penalties were up.

Melbournes Nelson Asofa-Solomona was put on report for a dangerous tackle with less than two minutes left, and then Manlys Moses Suli went over on the final play of the game, with Trent Hodkinson missing the extras as a dirty night ended for the home side.
