For most people, Google's always-on account protection
is the highest level of security they need.
But if you're an activist,
journalist,
thought leader,
business executive,
or other public figure—
or anyone who feels vulnerable to highly targeted online attacks—
you might need a different level of security to keep your data safe.
That's where the Advanced Protection Program comes in.
It's Google's strongest account security. Here's how it works:
[Strongest defense against phishing]
Phishing is a technique that tricks you into giving away your username, password,
2-Step Verification code or other personal information.
Even the most security-conscious users can be tricked by a sophisticated attack.
To protect you from this threat, Advanced Protection goes further
than traditional 2-Step Verification, requiring you to use a physical security key
to sign back in after you've logged out, or any time you sign in on a new device.
That way, even if you do get phished, an unauthorized user
won't be able to access your account without your physical key.
[Limited third-party access]
When using a new app or web service, you'll sometimes be asked
to give access to certain data in your Google Account.
Allowing limited access to your data is common but could be used to trick you
into giving fraudulent apps or services permission to edit, view, or download your personal data.
To help protect you, Advanced Protection only allows Google apps
and selected apps from trusted third parties to access your Gmail and Drive data.
This might affect the functionality of some of your apps
as a trade-off for tighter security.
[Block fraudulent account recovery]
Another common method someone could use to gain access to your account
is impersonating you and pretending they've been locked out.
Advanced Protection adds additional manual steps to the account recovery process,
significantly reducing the chances that they'll be able to access your personal data.
Enrolling in Advanced Protection is a quick and straightforward way
to keep your data as safe as possible,
so you can focus on what really matters.
