good evening welcome to Washington I'm Bret bear it is still not officially
back on but there are many indications tonight there will be some kind of
meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim jong-un
somewhere sometime soon the president's top diplomat said following a meeting
with one of Kim's top advisors that real progress had been made in the past 72
hours and remarks from President Trump today indicate he's still looking at mid
June as a target chief White House correspondent John Roberts starts us off
as he always does it seems from the North Lawn and even Jong not my fault
Brett I swear you know as you said officially the meeting is still off
there's been no announcement to counter the president's cancellation letter of
last week but if you take a look at the diplomatic posture it would suggest that
unofficially at least this meeting looks like it's back on leaving Washington on
a road trip to Texas President Trump this morning gave a thumbs up to how
talks with North Korea are proceeding I just want to tell you we're doing very
well with North Korea our Secretary of State has had very good meetings he's
meeting again today I believe they'll be coming down to Washington on Friday the
president revealed today that kim yeongcheol is expected to hand deliver a
response from kim jong-un to the president's letter last week the letter
is going to be delivered to me from Kim Jong
so I look forward to seeing what's in the letter president Trump also lowering
expectations for his planned meeting with Kim jong-un saying if it happens it
may be just the beginning of the process hopefully we'll have a meeting on the
12th that's going along very well but I want it to be meaningful it doesn't mean
it gets all done at one meeting maybe you have to have a second or a third and
maybe we'll have none the fries maybe we'll have none could also apply to
Robert Miller's request for an interview with President Trump I want to see the
documents which straig Audi has never seen which is outrageous I'm not gonna
let my client testify the president's outside attorney Rudy Giuliani told Fox
News today he has two conditions that need to be met before an interview
access to Rod Rosenstein so-called scope memo outlining the area's Robert Muller
was authorized to investigate and access to DOJ materials regarding the FBI
confidential informant who approached several members of the Trump campaign if
and when we find that this was handled appropriately and and there's some
evidence on which they could base this phony investigation
well we haven't testified but if there is no evidence which I assume there is
no evidence then I mean he shouldn't testify the latest twist revealed in the
Russia investigation is the existence of a memo written by former FBI director
Andrew McCabe about the firing of James Comey sources tell Fox News that McCabe
memo details of meeting he had with Deputy Attorney General rod Rosen
Stein's sources say in that meeting Rosenstein
said the president asked him to include something about Russia in his memo
justifying commis firing Rosen Stein told McCabe he declined to do it a
source tells FOX News that President Trump simply asked Rosen Stein to add a
line about Comey telling the president he was an under investigation the
reference was not included in Rosen Stein's final memo Rudy Giuliani also
tells Fox News that he has not yet begun formal prep sessions with the president
for a possible interview with robert muller but even if there isn't going to
be an interview Giuliani says he'd probably still do
those prep sessions because the president's legal team will
want to write a report about it at some point and need to have a great level of
detail and the president's understanding before they write that report
Brett John the president announced a pardon today and hinted at more action
to come dinesh d'souza the well-known conservative filmmaker author and
commentator who pled guilty in 2014 to illegal campaign contributions received
a presidential pardon today and then aboard Air Force One on his way down to
Texas the president suggested that there may also be pardons in store for Martha
Stewart and former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich who's serving the fourteen
year prison sentence for corruption interesting to note that both of those
people Stewart and Blagojevich appeared on Celebrity Apprentice this did not sit
well with some of the president's Democratic critics who believe that he
is sending a signal to people caught up in the Russia investigation that he is a
pardoning kind of guy Brett John Roberts live in the North Lawn John
thanks more on this with the panel Secretary of State Pompeo saying today
it would be a shame if an agreement is not reached with North Korea
correspondent Richardson is at the State Department with the other part of the
story tonight they made real progress that's the
report from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo following hours of meetings this
morning and last night with North Korean vice chairman kim yeongcheol it could be
nothing short of tragic to let this opportunity go to waste
the North Korean government spent decades building a nuclear weapons
program to safeguard its regime secretary Pompeo says his mission is to
convince kim jeong-hoon that his nuclear weapons actually present a threat to his
security not protection since President Trump agreed to a summit with Kim
jong-un the rhetoric between the countries has vacillated between
threatening and complimentary one not ought to be either surprised or
frightened or deterred by moments where it looks like there are challenges and
difficulties things that can't be bridged our mission is to bridge them
one week after President Trump released a letter to Kim jong-un canceling the
June 12th summit in Singapore Kim's top emissary on this issue is in the United
States carrying a letter for president Trump
Pompeyo says kim yeongcheol will deliver it tomorrow in washington
North Korea claims it destroyed its punggye-ri nuclear test site to
demonstrate what it says is a willingness to dismantle its program now
the Middlebury Institute for International Studies says satellite
images show North Korea removing materials from the site before its
destruction the Institute confirms to Fox News that quote the North Koreans
are still treating information about their nuclear weapons program as
sensitive that suggests North Korea is unlikely to hand over actual nuclear
weapons and while his vice-chairman is in the united states kim jeong-hoon
hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who delivered a greeting from
President Vladimir Putin he sends his warmest regards and best wishes and the
big endeavors that have been initiated on the Korean Peninsula with your
participation as the Russian government tries to involve itself in this issue
Lavrov also invited Kim to Moscow the original date for this summit is less
than two weeks away June 12th when asked whether it's actually going
to happen on that date Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would only say he
doesn't know Brett Richardson live the State Department rich thanks if the
summit happens will anything important be accomplished there let me know on
twitter at bret baier you can use the hashtag special report or on facebook at
facebook.com slash Bret Baier s or there are new fears tonight of a trade war
involving the US and its economic partners / rivals the president is
making good on a threat to impose tough new tariffs on imported metals and the
countries affected are fighting back correspondent Kevin cork has details
from the White House these tariffs are totally unacceptable
the White House's decision to implement new tariffs on steel and aluminum
imports from Canada Mexico and the European Union could depending on your
perspective fanned the winds of a global trade war or send the strongest message
yet that the days of massive US trade imbalances and unfair market access are
over we will continue to make arguments based on logic and common sense and hope
that eventually they will prevail against
in administration that doesn't always align itself around those principles
it's totally unacceptable that it come to me is imposing
unilateral measures lucuma simone global trade is not a gunfight at OK Corral the
president's move comes after months of failed negotiations with the
administration announcing today tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on
aluminum imports from Canada Mexico and the EU set to go into effect tonight at
midnight these work to exempt certain countries and certain allies for which
we have trading or security relationships but in these instances it
wasn't possible and so the president took action in retaliation Mexico said
it would target US agriculture products the EU Bourbon and motorcycles made in
the USA and Canada announced a 16 billion dollar set of new tariffs on
American goods some of the president's own party questioned the wisdom of the
policy Tennessee senator Lamar Alexander saying this is a big mistake calling
tariffs basically higher taxes on American consumers with Ben Sasse of
Nebraska adding this is dumb make America great again shouldn't mean make
America 1929 again both men argued when it comes to tariffs the US should hit
China not our allies but commerce secretary wool varasi today he wasn't
overly concerned about the round this has been under discussion for quite a
long time a very small percentage of the
respective the kind of a fraction of 1% Chinese leaders acknowledge they're
anticipating us chair sometime soon and they're vowing to be prepared to fight
back when they happen don't forget next week Bret will be in Canada with the
president for the g7 where it's a very good bet that tariffs will be a major
topic of discussion when cork in the White House briefing room Kevin thank
you stocks were down today the Dow lost 252 the S&P 500 fell 19 then as I
dropped to 20 so let's get some analysis now of how the trade talk may be
affecting the markets now and going forward Deirdre Baldwin of the Fox
Business Network joins us now from New York good evening Deirdre good evening
Brett all three indices found Boeing and Caterpillar the most on the Dow so as a
result of the tariffs imported steel and aluminum is going to cost American
companies more which can hurt profit margins Canada Mexico the EU
specifically Germany make up half of American steel imports and numerous
trade experts say the Econo and the economic effect of these tariffs will be
far-reaching there's also retaliation Mexico vows to impose duties on
everything from US flat steel to American cheese anyone in Mexico who
wants to buy American products will have to pay more for them Procter & Gamble
sells a lot of personal care products in Mexico that stock was lower today the EU
has been talking about targeting about 3 billion dollars in American products
from harley-davidson that stock was lower suburban brown-forman makes Jack
Daniels whiskey that stock closed lower Canada's saying it's going to retaliate
dollar for dollar more than 15 billion dollars worth of tariffs against
numerous US products including American playing cards felt-tip pens
so whatever American goods Canadians want to buy they will have to pay more
for them as of midnight tonight Brett so any silver lining in the market today
well for investors who own steel and aluminum stocks those as two general
groups closed higher there were some big movers but I think the larger next a big
economic related question is what are these tariffs
Canadian and Mexican steel and aluminum mean for NAFTA negotiations Commerce
Secretary Wilbur Ross you seem pretty calm about the implications but Goldman
Sachs put out a note saying it is less likely for the three countries to revamp
the three party trade agreement most economists prior to today were somewhat
hopeful for progress with the auto sector but now they say that's off the
table right you'll watch that one Deirdre thank you we have some
spectacular new video to show you tonight from Hawaii fox news travels
with National Guard troops to bring you a first-hand look at what scientists
tell us is the hottest lava yet and the hottest hot as possible from the Kilauea
volcano here's correspondent Jeff Paul there is
no stopping this force an apocalyptic mix of hot molten rock plumes of toxic
gas and fire you wake up to the horns and sirens and you just hear people
yelling telling you you need to go now now you need to go the Kilauea volcano
and it's active fissures are responsible for the destruction of more than 70
homes and Counting we're a history in the making and yeah it's pretty cool but
then yet it's it's also scary because it's close to home I mean it's home it's
been armed right across the street from us stress is also setting in watch as
this tense moment between two residents takes a near deadly turn the accused
shooter spoke with us two previous day sharing video of the lava getting closer
to his home and the lava is moving faster covering
up to about six football fields an hour its Reach is growing by the day
spreading across an area three times the size of New York's Central Park we have
to wear these protective masks right now because the levels of sulfur dioxide are
far too dangerous from behind us you see that big black walk cool the lava
beyond that there's a lava pool and that's what were supplied National Guard
members and at any moment that wall could crack and you'd have a wave of
runoff gushing towards us it's like a like an above-ground pool that if the
sides break and the waters just gush out that's how dangerous that could be with
molten hot rock the lava has burned and seeped its way over roads leading in and
out of devastated subdivisions with fewer escape routes remaining more
families are facing the reality of leaving and losing it all we all have a
lot of emotional connection to this place but it's time to go it's it's not
it's not fair to put other people's lives at risk the county estimates
around 1,000 people still live here in lava zones the threat / earthquakes in
sulfur dioxide remains high Brett Jeff thank you amazing pictures up
next the eerie silence by progressives about sexual misconduct among the
leading Democratic candidates for California governor first years with
some of our Fox affiliates around the country are covering tonight Fox 5 in
Las Vegas says the contracts of 50,000 workers employed at 34 casino hotels
expire at midnight they could walk off the job any time starting Friday the
union representing thousands of Las Vegas casino workers says the city's two
largest resort operators would lose more than 10 million dollars a day combined
if housekeepers cooks and others go on strike WSVN in Miami has several homes
have been have been damaged and are being damaged and two people injured
when a crane collapsed in Fort Lauderdale that happened yesterday
afternoon officials said workers were replacing power poles when the crane
lost stability and crashed into those houses and this is a live look at New
York from Fox 5 one of the big stories there tonight Sears closing another 72
stores after reporting first quarter losses and plunging sales
the struggling retailer says it has identified about 100 stores that are no
longer turning profits and seventy two of those locations will be shuttered
soon Sears Holdings Corporation lost 424 million dollars in its first quarter
this year that's tonight's a live look outside the Beltway from special report
we'll be right back
