Real Madrid name their price for Gareth Bale to Manchester United

Manchester United have been given a shock after Real Madrid informed any suitors for Gareth Bale that they will need to spend a record fee to land the Welshman, according to reports.

Bale came off the bench to deliver a man-of-the-match performance in the Champions League final on Saturday, scoring one of the greatest goals ever seen in a European final with a stunning bicycle kick.

Immediately afterwards, Bale piqued the interest of every major club in Europe when he suggested he would seek a move away if he is not guaranteed more game time.

He told BT Sport: 'I'm sure we'll sit down at the table and see what's for the best.

For me personally, I feel like I should be playing week in, week out and I haven't been.

'I've been doing well, scoring goals, but I haven't been playing as much as I would like so, as I said, I am going to have to sit down over the summer and seriously consider what we do next.'.

And now the Daily Star report that, while Real are keen to keep Bale, they will permit him to leave if an offer of £200 million is made – which would usurp the record £198 million PSG paid for Neymar.

That could prove too costly for Manchester United, even though Bale has made Old Trafford his preferred destination should he leave the Bernabeu.

United have another problem in Bale's wages, which are the fourth most expensive in Europe behind only Neymar, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Incredibly, the Welshman currently takes home £650,000 a week – or £33.8 million – which is beyond even United's means, despite being the richest club in the world, and Bale would be required to take a significant pay cut if he is to return to the Premier League.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer 'would not blame' Rafa Benitez for walking away - Duration: 3:12.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer 'would not blame' Rafa Benitez for walking away

Benitez brought the club back to the Premier League in his first full season in charge, despite working on a shoestring budget.

Owner Mike Ashley bought the club £134.4m in 2007 and has been actively trying to sell it since October last year.

As a result the businessman has effectively stopped investing in the club, stating that he intends to run Newcastle on a self-sufficient basis.

Shearer believes the situation leaves Benitez in a very difficult position, one that he wouldn't be surprised to see the Spaniard walk away from.

He told YouTube fans' channel 'The Magpie Channel': "No one can blame him if he turned around to Newcastle fans and said 'I can't put up with this anymore'.

"Rafa has done a magnificent job in very very difficult circumstances" Alan Shearer "We'll probably say, 'You know what, we don't blame him'.

He needs backing. He needs assurances.

"Hopefully he'll get that because he has done an incredible job this year with what I believe is very limited resources." Benitez guided Newcastle to 10th place in the Premier League last season, securing top-flight status for next year with relative ease.

He added: "Why would Mike suddenly say 'I'll give you so much money?' He said it last season - 'you can have every single penny the club generates, you can have to spend.'.

But that was a load of rubbish and didn't happen.

"I think Rafa has made him four or five million in the transfer market net in the time he's been here which has been incredible.

"Michael Owen is still our highest transfer, which when you look around at Brighton, Bournemouth, Huddersfield and all these other football clubs which have been in the Championship, and come back up - we get 52,000 here every single week, one of the best supported teams around, then yes, he will have the same issues next season if he decides to stay here.

"Rafa has done a magnificent job in very very difficult circumstances.".
