Manchester United have been given a clear run at Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale after Manchester City decided not to pursue the Welshman.

Bale scored twice in Madrid's 3-1 Champions League final win against Liverpool on Saturday despite starting the game on the bench.

The winger dropped a heavy hint after the match that he could leave the Bernabeu this summer after falling down the pecking order.

'I need to be playing week-in week-out and that hasn't happened this season for one reason or another,' said Bale.

'I have to sit down in the summer and discuss my future with my agent and take it from there.

Obviously I was very disappointed not to start the game, so the best I could do was come on and make an impact – and that's what I did.'.

United have held a long-term interest in Bale and have tried to sign him on three occasions in the last decade.

Only City could rival United for Bale's signature in England, given Madrid are likely to demand in excess of £100 million for the winger and his £300,000-a-week wages.

However, according to the Guardian, City have decided not to target Bale and have given United a clear run at the former Tottenham man.

Jose Mourinho is said to be unfazed by Bale's long-standing injury problems and thinks Bale could solve United's right-wing problem.

Cristiano Ronaldo dropped a bombshell of his own after the match by suggesting he could have played his last game for the club.

However, Zinedine Zidane says Ronaldo 'has' to stay at the Bernabeu but says Bale's situation is more 'complicated'.

'Cristiano Ronaldo has to stay at Real Madrid,' Zidane said after the game.

'Cristiano Ronaldo will stay with Real Madrid, but we have to see.

I think he is a Real player and we cannot describe what he has done in his career 'Bale's situation is a bit more complicated.'.
