What a twist, okay
So that was something
in the moment
I was so excited to see them finally committing to revealing the answer to the mystery
Finally getting to see some relevant information that we've been wanting to see I finally felt some resolution
But after the dust settled and I started to think about what happened I had way more questions than answers
It's a recurring theme with the show. I know and before I get too far, let me just say yes
You want your viewers to be brought on with new questions at a plot point resolution, but to me
These are the wrong questions for me to have to ask
So sure when you write a story you want the book to be a page-turner and you want people to keep tuning in each week
But you still have to leave your audience feeling satisfied
And finally having all the question answered for a specific art or piece of the story
Shonen anime is a great example of this as it basically is one long story with smaller stories within it called arcs and
Usually each arc ends
You might get a filler episode or two and then you get a new arc and most people are happy with that
And then you start a new arc with new questions
I can guarantee you if the show had been handled better
It probably would have even more people coming back even though we have a small resolution
Well before I go into the questions I have I'd like to tell you what I thought was going to happen
So I guess I blinked or something the first time I saw a single pale rose
Because I totally missed the gem rotating on Rose as she became king diamond
What I thought they were gonna do is either have rose and curl had already proved pink diamond with intentions of bubbling her later
And they were gonna fake the shattering
So the authority would leave or two rose and pearl were acting on behalf of pink diamonds wishes and all three of them were in
cahoots with each other one of the main questions that I see that keeps being brought up is
How exactly did pink be a diamond and also be Rose, which is definitely a question I have myself
And it's not like her pearl was around to say that pink diamond was unavailable to her subjects or something
I also wanted to mention two other theories that I saw link in the description if you want to check them out
They're pretty good
So the fangirl theorized that the vision were shown in a single pale Rose is just the truth
That pearl has been instructed to show if anyone asked about the shattering event
Which is an interesting thought another theory by the fangirl that I liked even more
was that she theorized that Rose had shattered pink diamond and then tried to fix her shards together, and she
Really thirst which I thought was a hella cool concept, of course. We've never seen that type of thing before
So who knows if that's even possible?
So now to get into the meat of this video
YouTube is covered in videos talking about all the foreshadowing and Steven universe how if you look at almost every episode the song?
Intro every flippin line is foreshadowing
Now know everyone seems to say that we should have noticed all these clever hints that they left for us to find that it was
Expert writing that we didn't decipher all these clues
But everyone seems to be passing over the fact that some gems have told their story
Or the flashback shows that both of them are together
Things they would have seen
Like in garnets most recent flashback that she pulled the off colors some are you are probably going to say I'm reading into it
Too much, but these show creators seem to want this reaction from us. So I'm going to dissect this clip
What have you been saved?
they're my diamond has pleaded it's come to my attention that your
Colony earth bears life what? I know these organic life-forms serve no purpose Alex that we leave this planet and spare their lives
pink diamond thought for a moment and then laughed a
Wicked empty ceremony you wish to say these life forms at the expense of our own. Don't be absurd
Return to your post and I will forget your incense and with that rose quartz was dragged back to her
Kin, the gun for duty. So after these few lines that mean
pink diamond made up this whole exchange or
Even told garnet that they were all these gems around them when this happened
I mean, I guess it emphasizes how much of a psycho sociopath pink diamond actually was
Fabricating such details in the story and making up such an elaborate line and cover your tracks
She continued to pry it for the kid that got as a questions Oh odd that whatever eventually made its way to pink diamond
Rose quartz was summoned at once details about the other gems bringing roses questions to pink diamond
Make sense whenever they aren't the same person when they are the same person. Why would Rose tell this information to garnet?
Why wouldn't Rose since she was pink diamond?
Why didn't she say something like uh, you know pink diamond really wants to stop building the colony
But the other diamonds won't let her stop by leave your own and now all you want to do is be rid of it
First thing too many organics then their cities were too difficult to dismantle and and now these crystal gems
Were tired of your excuses pink the diamonds?
This rose quartz. Can't hurt you. You can't be swayed by a few unruly gems enough
Now some people would probably wave this away because we've shown that Peaks selfish young and makes decisions kind of like a teenager
Would do didn't it?
But if the point is to get gems on your side and make the fight for your cause
Wouldn't it make more sense to tell your people as rows that pink diamond isn't so cold and I'm caring
To keep a war going to have all these gems died in your wake
Now it's true that because she had to live a double life. She obviously couldn't tell garnet all the correct details
Everyone knows that one lie ends up as a mountain of Lies to cover the first slime
Maybe not doesn't have to say oh I didn't want to do it because that could get back to yellow and bloom
But still she could have tried working both sides in such a way that all the gems rally behind her
Instead of some of the gem siding with homeworld because they weren't a fan of rose
I mean in these situations no way is she gonna get a hundred percent conversion?
But maybe it wouldn't have caused the already divisive gap between the classes to get worse. Maybe that's the point
They're trying to make that selfish decisions can cause a lot of destruction
If it didn't happen this way, then why would the gems tell it this way?
And like how did she lead a double life under so many eyes if weapons that gems?
Conjure can't shatter. Anyone how the heck did so many gems get shattered or cracked?
I mean Emma's falls off a cliff in Beach City and gets a crack in her gym beer. I'm not gonna
Amethyst your chemist
So the story of Rose shattering pink diamond with a sword still seem plausible
but then we were given what business said in her special I
designed the sword for a fair fight
It can cut through a gems physical form in an instant
Destroying the body but never the gem
So what bismuth says is foreshadowing that?
The story we were told about pink wasn't completely accurate and that maybe there was something amiss in the story Steven knows
But to me that leaves a big hole in the war too because how long was homeworld shattering jimson
These are the kind of questions I have just to name a few the point
I'm trying to make is that more questions in a show doesn't automatically make it a great show
I've seen way too many people saying that it's the best thing since sliced bread
Uh, no, I mean sure it's great for the fan community to make tons of theories and speculate about how things went down
But honestly when you watch a show, you shouldn't have to speculate so much or fill in a ton of blanks
You didn't have to read side comics novels. Look at games made for the series to understand everything that's going on
It's great for marketing for sure
I'm not saying I don't understand it
I'm just saying that other things about Rose's story that we're told like her healing powers and
Then like maybe she had some powers other courts just didn't have
People are saying it's all
Foreshadowing but we really haven't got to see any other rose quartz in action
so How are we supposed to deduce that Rose is really that special we're told she's special
When roses shield is able to protect garnet and pearl from the corruption blast
That was definitely foreshadowing that made you realize how was she able to protect them?
But since we didn't get to see anything for comparison, it kind of makes the foreshadowing fall flat to me
I'd like to point to a few pieces of yeah that I feel like are much better examples foreshadowing the
definition of foreshadowing
According to literary devices net is this or shadowing is an advance sign or warning of what is to come the future?
the author of a mystery novel might use
Foreshadowing in an early chapter of her book to give her readers an inkling of an impending murder and as far as I'm concerned good
Foreshadowing is something that is big but obvious enough to make you take a second look
Stevan having pink sparkling diamonds round him in the intro is not foreshadowing
roses shields being able to protect the diamond attack is
okay, so they're both technically foreshadowing because the cool thing is
You're able to look back and say oh, wow. Look at all this foreshadowing but narrative Lee speaking one is helpful
And once more like an easter egg
These examples that I found are kind of widely accepted to be
Pretty decent examples and but why they work is kind of more in my opinion and if you have a different opinion, that's fine
Let me know what you think in the comments
And if you have any good examples for shadowing you'd like to share
So I'll start with this clip from Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy
It's the second movie The Dark Knight by let's come take control of our city
But this is a democracy
Harvey when their enemies were at the gates the Romans would suspend democracy and appoint one man to protect the city
It wasn't considered an honor. It was considered a public service Harvey the last man that they appointed to protect
The Republic was named Caesar and he never gave up his power. Okay, fine
You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain now
Why does this work is good for shadowing? Well, not only is our main character present for the statement
It also emphasizes
the internal struggle that Bruce Wayne is going
through of whether he's doing a good thing or if you should give up because he doesn't want to be
Corrupted by making the wrong choices. It also sets up the fact that until this point
We've been told and shown that Harvey Dent is a morally correct guy
Just trying to do the right thing
But his struggle has been mostly uphill and he doesn't seem to make any progress at the end of his art
He's shown to become a villain the whole theme of the movie centers around uncertainty and chaos people
So when you're here this line, it makes you wonder what's gonna happen to these characters
They eventually gonna be at odds because the two are work of the same causes but through different mediums
Stuff like that another example of foreshadowing working. Well is Romeo and Juliet from Shakespeare?
I really do want to have to include this example because I'm not really a big fan of Shakespeare to be honest
But it does still illustrate the point. Well, anyway, here we go when the story is set up
We know that the two
Families are warring and that people in the family on each side have been dying
and this line is used to set up the expectation that they are just as vulnerable and
as most of you already know the end of the story they die to true love's kiss so to speak why this works is because
We're given the expectation from the beginning that there's a lot of destruction
And chaos between the two families
We already know that if Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other
That it's probably not gonna work out because their families are the odds to the point of killing each other
So pretty good for shadowing. The last example I wanted to bring up is from the anime called fairy tale
Sorry to bring this one up as an example again, but every time I think about this property
The story arc always sticks out to me just the way it's structured overall is pretty great to make this short and to the point
this anime lives in its own made-up world where their magic Wizards
Monsters cetera follow a guild called fairy tale the adventures the main characters go on
One of the main characters named Lucy we've seen
Her family life from the beginning her mom died when she was young and her father was hateful to say the least
She ran away from home and never looked back on her old life
One day a girl brings her keepsake left to her by her now dead father the girl Michelle claims to know Lucy in
She doesn't remember her
Blonde with the pigtails. This is the one you want. Thank you for the help young man
Who's that?
Yes, ma'am, I'm a Heartfilia but who's asking exactly
Now it's true this could have been waived off
She wanted to forget about her previous life
But there's still something about the way Michelle says they used to play all the time
And the way Lucy doesn't remember that makes you question what's going on?
Because we know from experience that Lucy doesn't lie and is a very honest person. She doesn't remember this person or
Does the person have ill intent? There are other lines at foreshadow something is amiss with Michelle
But the important part is once we get to the end of the arc spoiler warning, by the way
Michelle
all of your tears
your appetite
your clumsiness
You're so cool
living your dreams and jealous
That's just a strategy to avoid feeling guilty harden your heart to suffering and you can justify any decision
Where Michelle you were suffering all along weren't you?
I'm so sorry. I love you
It makes sense, um, that's why she wanted things to go back to the way they were before
Yeah
She wasn't lying to me
She really believed it
And at one point I did too
She was my little sister
We find out that Michele wasn't lying and that she was Lucy's doll from childhood that had been brought back to life through magic
It's an interesting twist. That makes sense in the moment and in hindsight
It's something you can draw attention to you while you're watching it and it's something that when we get to the reveal it all makes
Sense, so sum it up. I think it's great
There are a lot of fans who've been made very happy by this reveal and what it means going forward
I know I probably seem kind of negative in this review
But I am really excited to finally get closure on this two-year drawn-out plot twist
I guess it's more like I'm irritated with the fandom crowning. This is the best writing on earth 20 18 11 10 much. Wow
What a twist everything is not foreshadowing every foreshadowing clue doesn't a good story make okay
Hey guys, as usual. Thanks for taking the time
Let me know any thoughts you have on this on this most recent reveal and what you expect happen next. Have a good day guys
You
