The effect of lameness on animal welfare and animal performance is costly and
wide-reaching. Whether you're a large-scale livestock operator or a
family pet owner, the sign of an animal in pain is distressing and must be
addressed. To shed new light on this important issue Zinpro Corporation is
proud to sponsor Experts Talk. The place where leading authorities on foot health
and lameness prevention share their expertise. This episode of Experts Talk
examines the industry-wide efforts employed by Zinpro Corporation in its
decades-long commitment to help better identify, manage and prevent lameness in
animal agriculture. Our experts today are Dr. Mike Socha and Dr. Connie Larson. Dr.
Socha and Larson are Research Nutritionists with Zinpro Corporation
who are widely known in the industry for their expertise in ruminant animals and
lameness management. So it's interesting as you ask about Zinpro and lameness
and it's been something that we've really been established within the
feedlot for quite some time in terms of being an effective nutrient to impact
foot rot. And so I think what we're doing is we're looking at that foundation that
we have built there and then looking at more applications of these products and
how they may help in other areas. I think certainly we are going to run into some
lameness issues that really aren't impacted by the trace minerals
themselves, but what we can bring to the producer oftentimes is an education. And
it's beyond just application of our product, but providing solutions for the
industry. So, when we're going into lameness we found that there was a lot
of misinformation out there, and so what we need to do, our reason, if
we're going to go ahead and sell a product to help reduce lameness we need
to educate the producer on what type of expectations they should have. We don't
want to go ahead and sell them a product that they feel this is the magic bullet
they go and feed this product and it takes care all the problems. So, we had to
go and educate them that if an animal becomes lame here are the number of
reasons why they can become lame, here's what's causing these animals become lame.
I think our key is we want people to know that really what we're trying to do
is train people within our industry that handle cattle to get a more keen sense
of normal locomotion movement and so we can have earlier intervention for
ones and twos. When we look at the Step Up Program and the application I think
it's really important that we have an understanding we can apply it through
the entire production system for beef cattle.
The First Step Program is a very intensive program its designed to work
with the dairy, its designed to go out to the dairy not tell them
that they have a lameness problem, but as you go out to the dairy and say okay
based upon what's causing your cows to become lame here's the areas we should
focus on first. I think as we look more closely at causes of lameness and
identifying that lameness that it's going to become more apparent of an area
that we need to put some effort into. I think back to the dairy side and when we
first started talking about dairy lameness with producers they often think
of the animals that are extremely lame and missing those animals that are just
mildly lame, and I think these are the animals we have the biggest opportunity
to improve their well-being and also improve profitability.
