DEFCON alert: WARNING issued over North Korea nukes - 'Kim is REPAIRING main test site' - DAILY NEWS - Duration: 4:08.DEFCON alert: WARNING issued over North Korea nukes - 'Kim is REPAIRING main test site'
THE DEFCON Warning System has issued a cautious update following a pledge by Kim Jong-un to
shut North Korea's main nuclear test site, but warned the rogue state is working to repair
or expand the facility - not close it.
The private intelligence DEFCON group warned Kim Jong-un's Punggye-ri site is still viable
for testing, and the hermit state has broken promises to denuclearise in the past.
Its latest update also highlights tensions over disputed territory in the South China
Sea as well as the prospect of conflict between Iran and Israel in the Middle East.
The DEFCON Warning System monitors nuclear threats against the United States and its
update for May remains at Level 5, the lowest level, which indicates there are no imminent
threats.
Recent talks between North and South Korea saw Kim Jong-un commit to closing his main
nuclear test site at Punggye-ri.
The facility in the north of the hermit kingdom has been used for several subterranean detonations.
The complex of test tunnels is buried deep underground and had reportedly been severely
damaged after part of it collapsed in October 2017.
But the DEFCON Warning System, which boasts contacts within the US Government and military
agencies, warned North Korea may not be keeping its word.
DEFCON said: "It also should be noted that despite claims by some, the nuclear test site
remains viable for future testing and North Korea has continued to do work at the site
to repair and/or expand it.
"However, there has been no observed testing at the site.
"While many praise the gestures made by North and South Korea, observers caution that
such promises by North Korea have been made in the past, only to be broken.
"For the time being, however, the threat of conflict in the region is quite low."
Tensions in the South China Sea could also boil over in the future as Beijing continues
to fortify its territory in the Spratly Islands, the latest DEFCON update warned.
Five nations have laid claim to parts of the archipelago, which has been at the centre
of a long-running and bitter territorial dispute.
China has transformed several reefs and atolls into fortresses as it seeks to maintain control
over the islands and the potential oil and natural gas reserves hidden below the ocean.
The DEFCON Warning System said: "China has installed jamming equipment on disputed islands
in the South China Sea and its military facilities are now capable of controlling the area.
"China has also flown nuclear bombers around Taiwan in show of force and plans regular,
ongoing exercises at the Taiwan Straits.
"Heightening a cold tension, China has deployed advanced DF-26 missiles while US B-52s fly
by South China Sea."
The official DEFCON level is classified and used by the US military to indicate the threat
of nuclear war.
Short for defence readiness condition, the scale features five levels of severity.
Level 1 is the highest, and if used by the US military would mean nuclear war is imminent.
American bombers were ordered to DEFCON 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

Liverpool's hottest fan REVEALED: Stunning radio presenter is die-hard Reds supporter - Duration: 4:03.Liverpool's hottest fan REVEALED: Stunning radio presenter is die-hard Reds supporter
Noreen Khan, who presents on BBC Asian Network, is a huge fan of the club who meet Roma AFC in the second leg.
Liverpool lead 5-2 after the incredible first match at Anfield last week and are on the verge of a place in the CL Final on May 26 in Kiev, Ukraine.
Die-hard red Noreen makes no secret of her allegiance to the Kop.
Her Instagram and Twitter accounts, which have more than 130,000 followers combined, are filled with Liverpool shirt selfies, snaps from Anfield and occasionally meeting players such as the legendary striker Ian Rush.
And she said she has the world's first customised saree made in the club's colours.
Unfortunately Noreen won't be able to attend the game in Rome which kick-starts from 7.45pm.
But she said: "I'll be covering the build up on my radio show on BBC Asian Network and then watching the match with friends later in the evening.
"I'm going for a Liverpool win obviously.
I think it will be 2-1 to us and Salah will score the first goal.".
As with millions of footie fans, she can't get enough of the Egyptian goalscoring machine Mo Salah who is "definitely her favourite player" after an astonishing 31 league goals.
She said: "He's just so effortlessly brilliant and a real raw talent.
"A complete joy to watch and seems like a real grounded person away from the game too.
"Steven Gerrard is my all time favourite, his passion and loyalty to the club was immense and then that historic win in 2005 in Istanbul.".
The Merseyside giants have enjoyed their best season since Brendan Rodgers took the side to runners up in 2013-14.
And free-scoring LFC under the stewardship of larger-than-life German Jurgen Klopp have been a joy to watch this season says Noreen.
She said: "When on form for me they've been the most exciting team in the Premier League this season.
"The trio Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firming are just formidable together and now we're on the cusp of getting to the CL final.
"I've got everything crossed for this second leg.".
Even though she's from Bedford, the radio star would have never supported another club.
"Being the youngest in my family, I grew up with all my older siblings supporting the club so it was natural for me to become a die hard fan too," she said.
"There are plenty of LFC fans in my hometown.".
