hello and welcome to this week's movie math where I can't believe it
Disney actually did it yes with a strong push for solo over the past two weeks
and keep in mind that solo doesn't open for yet another week I would say because
of the lukewarm reaction to solo the Disney wasn't able to undercut the
Deadpool to buzz but was able to dilute it which still did the trick because as
a result Deadpool couldn't hit the very wide target that Hollywood had
generously put out for him anywhere between 130 and 150 he would have been
done but his sequel actually came in under the low end of the projection with
125 and it gets worse because that's Fox's estimate others feel that when all
this pandemonium subsides Deadpool 2 might actually be at 122 or 123 what
does what does mere Millions matter well I'll tell you what it meant why it
matters those millions are important because it's in a tight race right now
with it for the second-biggest r-rated opening of all time
Deadpool number 1 still has the number 1 spot but let's take a moment to
appreciate Disney's evil genius Wow we're now not only is the only thing
standing in Solo's way so itself although I hear that's a pretty
formidable obstacle but anyway also I think Kathleen Kennedy is actually the
biggest obstacle for that movie but we're talking Deadpool right now well
actually we are talking solo and Deadpool but anyway this is where things
get really you know you really again you have to just admire the evil genius of
this because if the Disney Foxx deal does go through Ryan Reynolds will not
be negotiating from a position of super-strength anymore which he would
have been had his sequel topped the original now with depreciating numbers
Disney has softened him up so that I'm sure he'll be much more agreeable to
whatever Kevin Feige proposes to him and somewhere Tim Miller is smiling
hilarious now I'm sure some of you are already probably typing down below
sequels don't always open as big as the originals grace stop you no self
exaggerating this situation well that is an interesting question does did
Deadpool to need to open bigger than the first film because after all franchise
is often ebb and flow with the opening and overall grosses of each new film but
Deadpool and the x-men franchise overall doesn't put out as many pics to say
Marvel or Star Wars plus one would think considering the surprise success and
longevity of the first film that the audience would have grown and more
people would be gamed hit theaters opening weekend how does that work well
the first movie because it's a new entity not everybody goes opening
weekend but then they're like oh it's doing so well the reviews there's great
the buzz is fabulous I'm gonna check it out oh that was good and then when the
sequel comes out they're like well I'm not gonna wait this time cuz I know I
like it so I'm gonna come out for the very opening weekend but that didn't
happen here but what also might be happening here is that well Deadpool has
proven that r-rated movies can be quite profitable you know you know r-rated
movies they've always been profitable r-rated movies in the past but we're
talking at this level and with something that's supposed to have a wide audience
like a superhero film right and you know Logan did very well as well but not as
well as Deadpool but anyway what Deadpool net might now be proving is
that r-rated films also have a ceiling especially considering that it is right
in the same league as both Deadpool movies and Warner Brothers might want to
take all this into consideration when managing expectations for in Chapter two
also while many parents took their kids to see Deadpool the first time around a
fool me one situation might have developed here and not just with parents
but also with theaters many of you tweeted me that theaters were being more
strict this time about upholding that R rating for Deadpool to actually tell
telling people they couldn't go in and some of you even told me that kids were
taken out of the theater as a result the sequel did steal older with sixty-two
percent over the age of 25 where the first one had only 53 percent over the
age of 25 then for the next Deadpool movie and no matter what there will be
another Deadpool movie although it might have a lower budget I would say maybe
somewhere in between one and two but anyway they might want to work on their
female appeal if they want to squeeze out some more money here there's because
there's more this is a pocket of money that they're not accessing because both
Deadpool movies had a low female turnout especially again for something that's
supposed to have mass appeal get Vanessa off the bench already she's
sitting right there and of course there's so many other female explained
characters they could bring in but you know again Morena Baccarin she's done
the time she's put in the hours let's level her up already
now of course next weekend will be quite telling not just for solos debut but
also Deadpool twos hold this point ain't over even though Deadpool has taken some
pretty big punches but this will make a lot of you happy caramel was a bit of a
for Disney as a result as in China infinity war fell on astounding 75
percent in its second weekend and pulled in another fifty three point seven
million what China give trying to take it away right I mean still during the
week Avengers infinity war past Jurassic world to claim the number four spot of
all time and it's less than 200 million away from that two billion dollar club
oh what a roller coaster of emotion this must be for hardcore Marvel fans I think
it's still likely then it will close that gap and join the two billion dollar
club but I don't know with this China with this drop in China I mean I don't
know how much money is left on the table especially with Deadpool 2 now entering
the worldwide market and then solo right after it it might I don't know I'm
tempted I have to say I'm awfully temperatures roll back might roll back
to my recent prediction that it'll come in just shy of the two billion dollar
club I also think it's unlikely at this point that it'll be able to top the
force awakens so number four spot it is not too shabby and I would like to
remind you my original prediction all along for this felt now as for a quiet
place in China which opened this weekend that pulled in I don't think it was a
huge threat to infinity war but it might have done a little damage because it did
make 19 million a little a little less than 19 million in China which is an
impressive debut for a small flick with no global stars simmer down
Emily Blunt fans although I think that she and John Krasinski could now be on
their way to becoming global fans with this very flick we'll see what Mary
Poppins does we'll see we'll see what kind of damage Poppins does alright so
as for the overall top 10 more good news for a quiet place which had the best
hold for the week and then book club which entered the market trying to
counter program Deadpool 2 and obviously since not a lot of women showed up for
Deadpool either time this is pick the can be counter programmed with
the chick-flick uh and to be fair book club did do better than any other recent
films for any of its stars but it also splintered the female market sending
life-of-the-party and breaking in plummeting in their second weekend's and
interestingly maybe book club could have made even more money if it hadn't had to
compete with those two films interesting alright so yes this coming weekend we
finally get our fans versus kathleen kennedy showdown oh boy in many ways
more exciting than the movie itself a new round of reviews will hit on tuesday
after the next nationwide press screenings which are going to take place
on monday night that's what i'm seeing the movie so we'll see if that Rotten
Tomatoes score goes up or down right right now solo has you know the
projections for its opening weekend have been reconfigured that it's now expected
to open at around 120 which would not be a record breaker for the Memorial Day
weekend and it also will be the lowest opening yet for Kathleen Kennedy's new
era of Star Wars movies are you planning to see solo or are you participating in
this fan boycott and did you not see Deadpool 2 this weekend if so why not
are you maybe waiting to see it are you saving it for the holiday weekend
because you're not seeing solo again the fight ain't over yet share your thoughts
down below and that's this week's movie math
thank you for going over the box office with me and as always you can check out
