Breaking down the England squad for the 2018 World Cup

The most exciting part of any World Cup is the match for third place, because everybody's done with it at that point and the score usually ends up something like 12-3.

But the second most exciting part of any World Cup is the announcement of the England squad, as football's most hubristically self-loathing nation finally finds out which chancers will be breaking its heart this summer.

The goalkeepers

The omission of Joe Hart may not have been a particularly great surprise, but it does leave a gargantuan experience deficit between the posts.

Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland, and Nick Pope have a mere nine caps between them, and together make up England's least experienced keeping unit for a major tournament since at least the turn of the millennium.

The temptation is always to read calls like this as being statements of some kind: Southgate puts his faith in youth! Southgate clears out the old guard! In truth, Hart's season has been so weird and wretched that the true statement would have been to go the other way.

Had he been picked, it would have been a clear signal that Southgate doesn't think taking a mere nine caps to a tournament is a good idea.

Instead, it looks very much like he's picked the three best English goalkeepers at this moment.

Disappointing for fans of statements stronger than: Experience isn't everything! But good news for fans of Jordan Pickford.

The defence

Flexibility seems to be the key here.

Since taking over the job, Southgate has played both a back three with wingbacks and a back four, and he's got at least three players for every position there, along with a few that can jump into midfield if things get experimental.

Nice to see Trent Alexander-Arnold included as well.

Now there's a statement: Reaching the Champions League final does wonders for your reputation.

Perhaps the most interesting selection dilemma comes at central defence, where nobody has an unarguable case for a starting place.

Of those plying their trade in the big six, John Stones hasn't always been convincing for Manchester City, Gary Cahill spent a good while out of Chelsea's team, and Phil Jones remains Phil Jones.

Meanwhile Eric Dier's been mostly a midfielder for a while now.

Let's hope Harry Maguire gets the nod.

After all, he's the member of the squad that looks most like he could have been playing in 1966.

Other questions: Will the experiment with Kyle Walker as a right-sided central defender continue? Will the rusty Danny Rose get the nod over Ashley Young or Fabian Delph? And is five — Alexander-Arnold, Jones, Trippier, Walker, Young — a record for the most (sort-of) right-backs taken to a major tournament?.

You know, Raheem Sterling played at right wingback for a bit.

Let's make that six.

The midfield, or lack thereof

Eric Dier? Check.

Jordan Henderson? Check.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain? Ah, now there's a problem.

Oxlade-Chamberlain's injury was unfortunate, and horribly timed, given he was finally beginning to flourish into the player that he'd always hinted at becoming.

What's intriguing is the list of fringe midfielders that Gareth Southgate, for various reasons, hasn't called up to replace him: no Jack Wilshere, no Jonjo Shelvey, no Jake Livermore, no Mark Noble, no Adam Lallana.

Instead, Ruben Loftus-Cheek gets the nod, along with the possibility of cover from Delph and Alexander-Arnold.

If England go with three in the middle, we'd guess at Dier, Henderson, and Dele Alli.

And if England get injuries, it'll all start to look a little improvised.

Goals! Goals?

Given Raheem Sterling's wonderful season, we'd imagine he's nailed on to start whatever Southgate's chosen formation.

The other wing, if necessary, can be filled by either Jesse Lingard or Marcus Rashford.

But the most pleasing thing about England's attacking options is they have two genuinely scary central strikers who are good at very different things.

Indeed, it might even be worth rotating them in accordance with the opposition.

Against teams that will sit deep and crowd the box, pick Kane.

He'll get shots, and he's good at them.

Against teams that will push up and look to dominate the ball, pick Vardy.

There will be space, and he can do that hyperactive were-terrier thing he does.

Southgate's not going to do that, of course.

Kane's going to start.

But, oh, just think about how beautiful the noise would be.

England take on Brazil, and Southgate drops Kane.

The internet would snap in half.

The stand-bys

Southgate has named five players as stand-bys for the tournament, and given that injuries do often turn up at the end of the season, it won't be a surprise if one or more end up travelling to Russia.

Four of them are straightforward back-ups: Tom Heaton in goal, James Tarkowski in defence, and Jake Livermore and Lewis Cook in midfield.

But the fifth is Adam Lallana, who would almost certainly be in the full squad if he'd had a full season at Liverpool.

Given the total lack of any other attacking player on this list of five, Lallana is effectively covering almost a third of the 23-man squad.

It won't be too surprising if this omission ends up being just another few weeks to work on his fitness.

And then, if he goes and is fit, he might well end up playing.

England don't have anybody else quite like him.

HUGE!

Florida Election Supervisor GUILTY Of Rigging Election For Wasserman Schultz – They Found

It ALL In what is an ironic twist of events it has

come to light, the elections supervisor in Florida's second-most populous county broke

state and federal law by unlawfully destroying ballots cast in Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's

2016 Democratic primary.

This is according to a recent ruling by a judge in a case brought by the congresswoman's

challenger who wanted to check for voting irregularities.

The ruling states the Broward County Supervisor of Elections Office violated state and federal

laws by destroying ballots from a 2016 Congressional race too soon — and while the ballots were

the subject of a lawsuit against the office.

The ruling does allow Wasserman Schultz's challenger Tim Canova to have the attorney

fees he has paid be reimbursed by the elections office.

Leonard Collins, his attorney, said those costs exceed $200,000 already.

This leaves Florida taxpayers on the hook for Wasserman Schultz and her unethical behavior

yet again.

This recent ruling stems from Canova's bid to unseat Wasserman Schultz in the primary

race for the Democratic seat.

Canova lost the race by roughly 57% to 43% or 28,809 votes to 21,907.

Canova has also gotten the state of Florida to take interest in this case, and as a result,

the governor's office states that it plans to start election monitoring will be so "the

citizens of Broward County can have the efficient, properly run election they deserve."According

to the Sun-Sentinal –Canova, who was checking for voting irregularities in the race, sought

to look at the paper ballots in March 2017 and took Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes

to court three months later when her office hadn't fulfilled his request.

Snipes approved the destruction of the ballots in September, signing a certification that

said no court cases involving the ballots were pending.

Snipes called the action a 'mistake' during testimony she gave in the case, saying the

boxes were mislabeled and there was 'nothing on my part that was intentional' about destroying

the contested ballots.

****SIGN MELANIA'S GET WELL CARD HERE****

'When I sign, I sign folders filled with information,' Snipes said in her testimony,

later adding: 'I trust my staff.

They have the responsibility of giving me information that's correct.'Circuit Judge

Raag Singhal ruled Friday that Snipes wrongly destroyed public records because:— The elections

office is required to maintain the ballots in federal elections for 22 months, while

Snipes destroyed the ballots after 12 months, which is the retention period for state elections.

The ballots were the subject of a pending lawsuit, so it would take a court order from

the judge in the case to allow their destruction.

Snipes 'has not presented any evidence refuting that the public records sought were destroyed

while this case was pending before this court,' Singhal said.

Snipes will appeal the decision, said her attorney, Burnadette Norris-Weeks.

'We think the judge is wrong,' Norris-Weeks said.

The elections office never refused to provide access to the ballots, she said.Instead, it

rejected a request by Canova to use outside equipment to scan the ballots, Norris-Weeks

said.

Also, it didn't receive a partial payment to cover the costs of the public records request

until days before the suit was filed and the scanned copies of the ballots it can currently

provide are 'accurate and inherently reliable,' she said.

'It was a mistake [destroying the original ballots], but the ballots were preserved,'

Norris-Weeks said.

'They were scanned shortly after the election.'"

It is not currently known if the judge's ruling in civil court will lead to charges

being filed in criminal court against Snipes.

A spokesman for Broward State Attorney Michael Satz stated a decision had not yet been made

but that their office was in the process of obtaining a copy of the judge's order and

looking into it.

It is not currently known exactly what sort of monitoring system will be implemented in

the coming months in an effort to ensure election integrity but Norris-Weeks states that she

sees this as an effort by Republican state leaders to get some control over the heavily

Democratic county.

Canova, who currently works as a professor at Nova Southeastern University, is calling

for Snipes to be fired as she failed in one of her most important duties, as well as violating

the trust of the citizens of Broward County and of the state of Florida.

He states that given the ruling and the circumstances – "I think dismissal is an appropriate

remedy."

The judge's ruling in the case cited previous legal precedence that held "dismissal was

an appropriate sanction for failing to preserve evidence 'even though the destruction of

evidence may have resulted from negligence rather than an attempt to obstruct justice.'"Collins

stated of Canova and the events that transpired – "He was absolutely stonewalled by the

supervisor of elections.

When they were required to provide the records to us, they destroyed them."

Canova announced in April that he plans to leave the Democratic Party but also fully

intends to challenge Wasserman Schultz to a rematch in November as a candidate with

no party affiliation.

World Cup dream comes true for England newcomer Trent Alexander-Arnold - Duration: 6:33.

World Cup dream comes true for England newcomer Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrated a "dream come true" after receiving a first England call that will take him to this summer's World Cup.

The 19-year-old started the season as third choice right-back at Liverpool but a combination of his own impressive form and the fitness problems of Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez propelled him into centre stage.

Not only is he set to start the Champions League final against Real Madrid later this month, he is now heading to Russia despite his only senior experience coming when he was invited to join a session at St George's Park in March.

Posting to his 195,000 Twitter followers – a number he can now expect to multiply exponentially – he wrote: "Dreamt of going to a World Cup since I was a kid.

Today that dream come true, an honour to represent the 3 Lions this summer! @England.".

England's record cap holder, Peter Shilton, expects the tournament to test the teenager in ways he has not experienced before.

"Alexander-Arnold doesn't look over fazed by any occasion but saying that, the World Cup.

"It's really a test, it's pressure.

You know the whole world and whole country is looking at you, not just your club.".

Southgate has pressed ahead with a fresh-faced goalkeeping unit having dispensed with long-term number one Joe Hart in a difficult phone call on Monday night.

His chosen triumvirate of Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and uncapped Burnley stopper Nick Pope boast a total of nine international appearances to Hart's 75.

Pickford has just two friendly games under his belt but is favourite to take the gloves in Russia.

"The first piece of the jigsaw is complete in getting on the plane and the next thing is to get the starting shirt," the 24-year-old told evertonfc.

com.

"If I play I will be the youngest goalkeeper for England at a World Cup, which would be an achievement.

I played under (Southgate) for the under-21s, so he knows what I am capable of.

There is already trust there.".

Clarets boss Sean Dyche, who has also provided James Tarkowski and Tom Heaton to the standy list, was delighted for Pope – who had several loan spells in non-league football and had not played Premier League football until September.

"We can use all the words we want, but it's the marvel of football sometimes and Nick's is a great story," Dyche told his club's official website.

"What a season Nick has had and to be in the main squad speaks for itself in terms of the season he's had.

But the lack of international experience between the posts left 73-cap veteran Sol Campbell anxious.

"I've never been in a situation like that in my life playing for England," he told Sky Sports News.

"If I had someone behind me with only two caps, playing in a massive tournament I'm going to be saying 'I've got my work cut out'.".

While Alexander-Arnold was on cloud nine, there was disappointment for his Reds team-mate Adam Lallana.

Southgate is an avowed fan of the versatile midfielder but left him among the five standby players after he was confined to a solitary Premier League start all season.

Dennis Wise, who failed to make the cut for Euro '96, agreed with that decision.

"He's been out a long time and it would have been a bit unfair to some of the guys who have played the whole season and performed in a good way," he said.

"That would have been harsh.".

There were heart-warming messages from other squad members, notably Manchester United pair Marcus Rashford and Ashley Young.

Striker Rashford sent a message to his mother after his inclusion, saying on Twitter: "After years of you standing on the touch line in the cold and rain, Mum we're off to the World Cup!".

Young, who spent four years in the international wilderness before being recalled by Southgate in November, posted a snap of himself as a child in full England kit.

"Maybe this picture said I was gonna live my dream and go to a World Cup… dreams do come true," he wrote.

Manchester City's Kyle Walker, whose position was never in doubt, took a more light-hearted stance.

Posting a screenshot of his phone with the words 'Gareth Southgate missed call' emblazoned across the face, he tweeted: "The one call you don't want to miss."Leicester defender Harry Maguire, meanwhile, posted a picture of himself wearing the Three Lions in the stands at Euro 2016, commenting: "2 years ago watching @England in France with my mates.

"Now on the plane to Russia.

How things have changed.".
