Details after the show.

Ever get that creepy-crawly feeling when you're in the garage at night?

That phantom tickle on the back of your neck?

Well, there IS something out there, waiting in the dark.

The house centipede.

It's voracious, venomous, and the fastest centipede there is.

But don't worry.

It wouldn't hurt a fly.

Oh...not quite true.

So, let's clear something up right now.

Despite their name, centipedes almost never have a hundred legs.

Most have fewer than sixty.

And the tiny monster in your garage starts out with only eight.

Until it grows, sheds its exoskeleton, and sprouts more legs.

Then it sheds again.

And again.

And again.

And again.

And again, until it finally gets to 30.

All those legs work together in a rippling, rolling motion called a metachronal wave.

It's kind of the same way a worm gets around.

But, the centipede is way, way faster, propelled by these extra-long, super-charged legs in

the back.

Think of it as a well-synchronized crew boat, skimming over the water with the strongest

rowers in the rear, and the ones in front keeping things steady.

A set of stiff plates running down the centipede's back, called tergites, keep the segments underneath,

called sternites, from rocking side-to-side.

But the house centipede still has legs to spare.

And it's found some novel ways to put them to work.

Those extra-EXTRA long ones at the very end sort of look like antennae, don't they?

That's the idea.

It's called automimicry, when one part of the animal looks like another part, usually

to fool predators, or prey.

That's what people always thought.

But when scientists in Germany took a closer look at these legs, they found as many sensory

hairs on them as on the antennae.

So these "faux" antennae aren't just dummies.

They actually work.

And see those fangs up front?

Those are its forciples.

In some early ancestor, they used to be legs too.

They clamp down and inject the venom.

But house centipedes rarely bite people.

Those forciples are also a great grooming tool.

Oh, aaanndd… the tip of each centipede leg is another kind of tool, one so super-segmented

that it's almost like a rope.

The centipede uses them as a lasso to keep its prey from escaping.

Not even this cricket, with its powerful kick, can loosen the grip.

So twinkle-toes here is kind of a creepy Swiss Army knife.

You might say it's got a few legs up on the competition.

OK, OK, bad pun, I know.

Centipedes are really methodical groomers.

Kind of like cats.

They start with the front legs and work their way to the back.

What is Natto? - Duration: 5:19.

Ancient Japanese staple and supposed superfood, Natto gets a lot of hype for something

that looks like beans swimming in slimy pond scum.

Fermenting soybeans using bacteria creates something slimy and sticky, but also funky

and savory -- and, some people believe, based on a growing body of evidence, pretty good for you.

Natto is often eaten in Japan as a high-protein breakfast food.

Just add some soy sauce, maybe a little mustard, green onions or raw egg yolk and serve over

rice -- like we did here.

It's pungent, by which I do mean stinky, and is often compared to washed rind cheese in terms of its complex funkiness

and in-your-face-ness.

When I tried it, I got strong notes of both cheese and coffee -- which don't seem like they'd go well together.

It's an acquired taste, but I can see how you'd go about acquiring it -- it's actually really interesting!

In fermentation, you use microbes that grow and actually kind of pre-digest your food

to create new and interesting changes in the flavor, the smell, the mouthfeel and even nutritional content.

But you only want specific, friendly microbes setting up camp.

You don't want others in there that could cause the food to spoil.

To transform soybeans into natto, makers use a particular strain of the bacterium B. subtilis,

a common soil-dwelling bacterium with some neat tricks up its sleeve.

When B. subtilis are facing stress from their environment, they have an escape plan— they

can start forming dormant cells housed in super-tough armor called spores.

Spores aren't really alive; they're kind of like seeds of a plant but they're practically indestructible.

They're resistant to extreme temperatures, corrosive chemicals, and even radiation.

And they don't need food or water.

So you can cook your soybeans at temperatures and pressures that would kill most other microbes

that might be around.

Then you introduce B. subtilis spores while the soy beans are still hot, and those Bacillus spores

are the only thing that can stand to be in there.

After that, your natto-to-be is held in hot, humid conditions for about a day or so

to allow the bacteria to settle in and get to work.

Since no one else is home, B. subtilis spores wake up and have no absolutely competition

to eat the lovely beans.

And the effect of its munching is to transform the bland unfermented soybeans into...THIS.

But why do the bacteria produce these gooey strings?

Turns out this slippery substance is what microbiologists called a biofilm — a protective

environment for the bacteria to live in, something lots of bacteria make for themselves.

This particular biofilm is made primarily of polyglutamate.

The amino acid glutamate is responsible for the flavor of savoriness -- these strings

shed glutamate molecules, which our tongues perceive as umami.

More umami flavor emerges in the Natto over time as the biofilm produces more glutamate molecules.

Protected by this biofilm, the bacteria go to town chowing down on the carbs & proteins of the beans.

The fermentation of natto takes place above pH 7 -- it's an alkaline-fermented food.

A lot of other fermented foods are actually acidic, which makes them taste sour.

That's probably why I went in expecting the natto to taste like yogurt or something, but instead

it had a more earthy, slightly bitter flavor that reminded me of coffee or truffles..

Like a lot of fermented foods, natto was likely "discovered" by accident and turned out

to be a good way to preserve soybeans.

But it's still best fresh, as opposed to frozen.

And since it will slowly keep fermenting in your fridge, after a while, it can get pretty strong.

There's also a lot of buzz surrounding the health benefits of natto.

The label "superfood" is usually more hype than substance, but scientists have taken

an interest in natto and what it might do for us.

For example, natto is the most potent food source of vitamin K2, a micronutrient that

helps build bone by transporting calcium from your bloodstream to your bones.

And B. subtilis is found in healthy human guts, so eating natto might have probiotic effects.

Natto also contains nattokinase, an enzyme made by B. subtilis, that's been shown both

in the lab and in humans to have potentially useful effects as a blood thinner and therefore

in fighting heart disease.

It supposedly works by breaking down blood clots, so they can't get stuck in your arteries

and cause a heart attack or stroke.

Human trials are still ongoing into the effects of nattokinase, in heart disease as well as

things like Alzheimer's.

We definitely don't know everything about nattokinase yet, like how or whether it's

actually absorbed by the body, and whether it might interfere with other drugs.

But doctors are keeping an eye on this one.

That said, natto doesn't have to be a health food to be worth eating.

You can just enjoy the slimy funkiness.

Which I sort a did. Let's be real. I'll give it another shot sometime.

We want to give a huge shoutout and thanks to Ann Yonetani of NYrture Foods.

Who, when we reached out about potentially fact-checking an episode,

was so thrilled she sent us a bunch of free natto and Instagram resources and images and all kinds of great stuff!

Thanks so much Ann.

LIFE IS NOT ALWAYS EASY | Chapter 2 Episode 10 - Duration: 13:15.

What is up everybody is your boy Jay is Friday, September 21st

2018 I didn't film anything today. I

Don't know why I ain't film anything. I didn't feel anything today and now it's the end of vlog talk

So I actually ended up going to three innings today

Today just wasn't

Today was just not a good day. Today was one of my bad days. So that's why I went to three meetings. So

Let's go in order and we'll talk about

My day and let's see if it makes sense note to self I just remember how you felt this day Jay and

Try not to feel this way again, because you know, this is today. It was not a good day

So I started my meeting today

My home base

Fellowship at nine o'clock this morning. And today we talked we had a speaker and we talked about

step one

Which is very important like I've said before

some things that I got from the meeting was

An alcoholic is someone who has lost control of drinking which should be common sense, right?

Something that someone said that

Really caught me was that Alcoholics? Anonymous is the most

fundamental thing and

Not the most important thing in life

life is the most important thing and

AAA gives us the fundamentals to learn how to live life in sobriety and

Without alcohol and without your ego taking over

Another thing that someone else said was that prayer takes practice as alcoholics

we hear you love shame, and it took this person a lot of

times to

Come to meetings and to admit that

They are alcoholic and as long as this person prayed

That was kind of their way of

Really seeing and becoming free and I thought that was kind of cool

that's something I'm still working on which is my higher power and trying to

Trust in the plan and

Try not to sweat the small things, I think that's one of the name of my vlogs in my first chapter

okay, so that was

How I started my day, and I thought I ended my day

Well, all right thigh and did them session well, and then I was on my way to work

I

Don't want to go into detail about what happened at work

but

Let's just say there were a bunch of things that happened and they just got me pissed off to the point where I just left

And luckily in my position I'm able to do that. I can leave whatever I want and I

Had a moment of character defect which

Put me in predicament and I knew I had to get out of the situation and I couldn't I

Couldn't just breathe or meditate or say the serenity prayer I had to go I had to

Just be out of the environment and just leave

Because it's happening to me a lot lately and

It's a character defect I really need to work on but

You know China briegel habits is a tough thing and I

Can't say that, I'm the only one that has to deal with multiple problems, but

This is this is all new to me and although I've been sober for 52 days now

Mrs. Double-check in 52 days, I

would have to say that being sober is easiest part of this this being sober and not having to drink is the easiest part of

Going through my sobriety and my alcoholism

So luckily for me. There was a church down the street from my office and I

was able to make it to a meeting and

some things I highlighted in the meeting which was a reading from the big book for

alcoholics

Which is kind of weird because the first paragraph that was read today said

Nothing is right

Finances are in bad shape. I

Must find a way to make some money the family seems to think of nothing, but spending people annoy me

What has God left me? I cannot understand I will not be that way and

It talks about how someone

this is this is a story from the book and it talks about how someone relapsed and decided to take a drink and

Go to the liquor store and

Go back to their old ways. And that was it

That wasn't what I wanted to do I wanted to go to this meeting

to try to have some

spiritual awakening or some

some notes to

feel better and

Noticing that that was the first passage to be read that was kind of like

Yeah, I agree. Nothing is right

people annoy me and I felt like today God has left me but

By the end of the meeting after hearing everyone talk

Someone said that

The first time if it went to an Amy, they felt like the statue atlas

If you're not familiar with that was I'll probably put a picture

atlas is this

I believe Greek or

some type of

Statue that was holding the world

On his shoulders and

Once this person came to a and said my name is so-and-so and I'm an alcoholic

he may be immediately felt like release and felt like

all of a sudden the weight of the world was

Off his shoulders

And I can say that that that is how I felt in the beginning to when I first went to my a a meeting

sober

and this is after my relapse and

It felt good for a long time and I have a sponsor that I talked to daily I meet up with him weekly

We see each other at least three or four times a week

Either at a meeting or one-on-one

But it

Being sober doesn't get rid of your character defects

so my quick wit to react to something got the best of me today and

I

Wasn't able to pause

Think meditate pray before I reacted I just reacted and that's why I went to my second meeting and I

Went home and I took a nap and

I called one of my

one of my good friends and I spoke with him and

You know

Trying to

evaluate what happened today and things like that and you know, I

Decided that I needed to go to another meeting

Just because I was going insane in my brain

and

Not thinking the best thoughts I wasn't gonna have a drink or anything like that I just was a

being

of sound mind or being

happy or

Thankful. I was holding a lot of resentment inside. So I

went to a third meeting in a different location still in still in my neighborhood and

what was cool is that my

Sponsor was there

So there was a familiar face as long as well as a bunch of familiar faces there and it was a step meeting

so we talked about step four and

What's cool about this meeting is that

We read the whole chapter and then one by one we go through our experience

with the reading and

how we felt about it and

some passage that really

caught my eye today was

but in alcoholics Anonymous we slowly learned that something had to be done with our vengeful resentment self-pity and

Unwarranted pride. We had to see that every time we played the big shot

We turned people against us we had to see that when we harbored grudges and planned revenge

for such defeats

We were really beating ourselves with a club of anger that we and we intended to use on others

We learned that if we were seriously to start our first need

Was to quiet the disturbance regardless of who or what we thought caused it. Oh

So

That's what I wanted to share

during the discussion of

this lost me that I went to today and

it

Just goes back to there a lot of things. I need to change in my life

Not only with my sobriety

But in the way that I act the way that I react my character defects and I'm it's a learning process

And something that I cannot I

Cannot rush

and I

Feel that at this point of time. I need I need to take a break

Not from vlogging. I'm still gonna vlog this because I want to remember this feeling I want to remember this day

but

Again, luckily. I have the capability of deciding when to work

so I'm taking off for the weekend, and I'm just going to have some me time and

hopefully that will make me feel better and I can meditate and pray a little bit more about what

Trajectory I need to take in life and

Again, I am trusting in the higher powers plan, and maybe this is part of the plan

this is something that I have to go through and I have to think through and

sometimes

Parts of the plan are not gonna be easy and sometimes you're gonna be rough. It's gonna be tough and you have to

Figure it out. I'm not a kid anymore. I'm not

a helpless

Person or a baby and I have to man up and I have to realize that

Even though I'm sober I still have character nice. Uh-huh

Even though I am sober I still have character defects. I still am flawed and I still need to work on it

so with that said

Let me just say it's okay to be flood and it's okay to have character defects but

until

You are able to realize that and try to change it

you're always gonna be the same person and you're gonna be more likely to hold resentments and to

Want to revert back to having a drink and I know that is not in my plan

I am NOT gonna have a drink because of this this worked too hard to be 52 days sober and

I need to learn how to deal with stress so

With that said

Let's end the vlog the way we usually do

Remember to be confident

Be honest be humble and more than anything does

Be well

My head is heavy, let me lay it down to y'all love

Episode #6 Preparation is the key - Duration: 13:39.

On this episode we keep working hard to get the rig ready in order to leave

we experience some issues with the weather with a tropical hurricane headed straight for us and

We keep looking for our solar panel that decided to fly off the roof

We're just in recovery mode

What happened Andy what happened?

the solar panel blow over board

We had a squall and the solar panel that was sitting already for mounting decided that he was gonna sit over here

And now we're going fishing

What are we doing now? We are going to rescue a solar panel from the drink

In a middle of the Alligators ? In a middle of the alligators!

9 pm

i didn't think i will be doing that anytime soon

Any success ?

Successful waters warm! it's a good thing!

nice swim but...

Would have been nice during the day but still not ideal I thought we might come across it straight up straight down the bottom

it would have been lot nicer! It's just to much water !

I think but just hit and just swam practically under the boat this way that way

As the Sun rose the next morning. We had one thing on a brain! Find the solar panel

We got high on the mast to see if we could spot it, but the water was far too dirty

Time to come up with another strategy

-The ropes gonna go from there! -Yes! I'm going to swim it over there Abel gonna swim it to the yeah

The Rope is gonna be in a big arc. Yeah. Alright and then we're gonna take it across to the jetty

That's what you've got to do

once you've paid it all out to us take the end around the sides around the whole ass in the cross under the jetty and

Tight like that one. And what we'll do is we let it sink to the bottom

We get one at each end. Right and we go like this. We just slowly pull it in and it'll slide across the bottom

Okay, and when it's a panel

Like that and then we'll go up can you pull it up? Can you pull and we'll find a shopping trolley, dead body's?

We used a sinking rope and slowly pulled from each end trying to snag the solar panel

So from the cleat into that pole with the red line on it, right?

Can you stand on the line?

Go like that for me there. there or up here, where you are there?

But I ball pick the line that I explained to you to the red rope to the cleat, right?

Stand smack in the middle of it with your line across it

Okay, so the panel there so what's that that's due out from the stay

About 12 feet for 14 feet out

You got it. Oh my god

I couldn't get it off the bottom

It was stuck in the mud. So I put my foot into the mud

To get my feet under the lifter and I went there far into the mud

So I'm trying to swim out of the mud, to try and lift! It was coming slightly, slightly!

In order to celebrate finding our solar panel we invited the boys over to enjoy some local cuisine

also known as Australian Vegemite

Really salty ! It's really salty!

it taste like really salty sh##t!

ok, i taste it !

You want more!

It turns out that it's not just our boat that has the issues

One of the local boat in town had an issue with their engine the next morning

Next priority is electrician !

As we continued to work out our electrical issues. We revert back to our main problem, which is our GPS that burnt out

It turns out the problem was worse than we thought

We called in the local marine electrician he helped us realize some things and get the boat ready for our departure

So Andy is just taken apart the dabit just scratch the material to lift the roof for a water catchment system

beautiful

corrosion protection !

With the vessel in need of some new lines we went down to the local marine store

It took quite some time to get the amount of line we needed.

-Okay, what's the plan for me?

well, the plan is to

Get that somewhere on this boat

On the foredeck we're still playing around with exactly where

But the reality of it is we've both got stuff back. So none of us are lifting it. So we're gonna use the halyard and

The rope over there

And make the winch do the work

This is not good news! As the weather reports came in

The hurricane was inbound time to get all the boats ready

just doing the old hurricane tied down and all the neighbours boats

Hopefully we don't get much of a surge. But obviously we've had to tie the chains

Around the poles that we can rise! We expecting about 1 metre of tidal influence

But we've got a different slips that's slightly different for us

With only one engine running we had to use the ropes to turn around the boat

All right, I just pulled up

Been out giving some tools some parts and trying to get my back fixed

That's another story

And they have turned around Añejo

so currently we've got a

tropical storm slash hurricane bearing down

a location near us

still the track map is undecided and we've to go onto all precautions to make sure that our boats stay still and it looks like

They have added

Absolute myriad of lines

they've also used our hurricane right on the athena next door because that wasn't time to properly

They've been busy

Okay. I've got a couple stern lines

Strapped down the roof

And what we've done is they're gonna using these poles because it's a floating jetty they're gonna float up and down

Alright it's got lines everywhere. This is looking really good guys

couple more we've got more of the hurricane ropes on the deck that we're gonna use

My guess is that's going out port side bow out there and I'm guessing that they saved that job to me to swimming out there

Well, well guess Abel!

We used all available rope on board and even went and purchased some new one in order to create a boundary around Añejo

Let's keep her safe

Well the hurricane missed us and our solar panels are still on the roof. So happy days

hopefully on the homestretch Hélène is back in the bilges, making sure they are all right

Hélène! good job!

We are getting there babe

Slowly!

We have Andy who's taking apart

The water maker and strip it down every little piece

Rebuilding it who's killing it! Anyone needs to have their water pump serviced

100$ on Andy

and I'm over here adding it a new switch panel for our spreader lights

And Hélène is having

a dockside shower

It's lovely!

This is what call

What the street name?

Damn, it damn, and we fondly referred to it as gun me down street

What is the river? Mississippi

Mississippi River. Yo, man. Look out for the truck, man

How cool is that!

We just increased our fuel capacity by 50%

I don't know how much those tools weirst. I have no clue

I'm going for 600$! I would say she's pretty loaded

I'm actually cleaning the bilge pump here

And ovesly, the pump is not working as a port side neither because I just clean up the port side yesterday

So just one more thing on a top of the list We need to fix before we go.

I just made a little

Spongy so I don't need to get into the hole

I've had a morning of installing bilge pumps getting an electrical stuff sorted because a lot of old electrical stuff is broken

It's the old one

That's the new one and that's why our port engine

Do not have much water

And was running slightly hotter than our starboard and that is why

This is our backup nav system, we can run it through our TV phones and iPads

It allows us to track the weather and plot courses super handy information to have

oh!

Yeah

It's very bad! Oh my god, it's the last thing I need right now

Don't worry i do it just oh good

why did you do that for ?

i am having a melt down!

So I decided to go and relax myself

So finally it's time to set sail

With our extra crew board. We took it in turns with a night shift having a sleep outside due to the bad weather

we catch a couple of sailfish and

Finally get boarded by the Coast Guard
