RETENTION, IS HERE TO HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED.
MICHELLE KISER IS THE DEPARTMENT'S SENIOR DIRECTOR.
>> Michelle Kiser: This includes four different departments within
that umbrella. >> Allison Hirth: AND THE FIRST IS THE LEARNING
CENTER. >> Michelle Kiser: It's the tutoring center for the university.
If they need help, if they are struggling in any class, that's where
they need to be going. >> Allison Hirth: LOCATED IN THE BASEMENT OF
HOLDEN HALL, THE LEARNING CENTER OFFERS TUTORS IN
SUBJECTS LIKE MATH, PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, ACCOUNTING AND MORE.
>> Michelle Kiser: It's a peer that's actually helping them, that has attended the
class, that has made an A or B in the class, and that has been
recommended by one of the instructors. >> Allison Hirth: APPOINTMENTS AREN'T
NECESSARY AND THE BEST PART-- ALL SERVICES OFFERED AT
THE LEARNING CENTER ARE FREE. SO IS SUPPLEMENTAL
INSTRUCTION OR SI. >> Michelle Kiser: If they have gone to a biology class and they're
like, 'I have no idea, I'm so lost,' you can go to the session and we review
exactly what happened in the class that day. We don't
replace the instructor. I don't want anyone to think that SI replaces
the instructor or they don't have to go to class because they can go to SI.
That is absolutely not the case. >> Allison Hirth: SI SESSIONS AREN'T AVAILABLE
FOR EVERY COURSE OFFERED AT TEXAS TECH. >> Michelle Kiser: We look at the high rate of Ds, Fs and Ws-- those classes are where
we look to make sure that we offer supplemental instruction. >> Allison Hirth: BUT THE NUMBERS SHOW STUDENTS
WHO ATTEND SI SESSIONS REGULARLY EARN HALF TO A WHOLE LETTER GRADE HIGHER
THAN STUDENTS WHO DON'T. SOAR ALSO FACILITATES DEVELOPMENTAL COURSEWORK
IN CERTAIN AREAS-- ENSURING EACH RED RAIDER IS COLLEGE READY.
IT'S PART OF THE TEXAS SUCCESS INITIATIVE PROGRAM, OR TSI, WHICH
REQUIRES STUDENTS WHO DON'T MEET THE ASSESSMENT'S BENCHMARKS TO TAKE THE
CLASSES THEY NEED A LITTLE EXTRA HELP IN BEFORE ENROLLING
IN COLLEGE-LEVEL COURSES. >> Michelle Kiser: They come in, we refresh them and then they take a semester
to get their skills back up to where they need to be with reading, writing
or math and then they move on. >> Allison Hirth: PROGRAMS FOR ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT AND
RETENTION, OR PADR, FALLS UNDER SOAR'S UMBRELLA TOO.
>> Michelle Kiser: It is the suspension and probation program
for the university. Any student that goes on suspension or probation is
required to complete this course successfully in order to continue at the
university. >> Allison Hirth: PADR TEACHES STUDENTS HOW TO EFFECTIVELY USE CAMPUS
RESOURCES TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN ACADEMIC SUCCESS, WHICH KISER SAYS IS OFTEN
CONFUSED WITH RAIDER READY-- WHICH IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CLASS AT TEXAS TECH.
>> Michelle Kiser: Raider Ready is the academic course for incoming freshman
that is basically acclimating with the university, making sure that they're going to be
successful here. We talk about Tech traditions, we talk about email etiquette, we go over
the academic support services that are available to them, like those at SOAR.
>> Allison Hirth: THROUGH ALL ITS SERVICES, KISER AND HER TEAM WORK EACH DAY
TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL. FOR THEM, IT'S ALL ABOUT
ENSURING THE THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS WHO USE SOAR'S SERVICES LEAVE TEXAS TECH
WITH MORE THAN A DEGREE-- THEY LEAVE WITH LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS FROM
AN ENRICHED EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.
