Which riff Cliff Burton wrote for 'Master of Puppets'? - Duration: 4:06.
There are 11 Metallica songs with Cliff Burton mentioned in the songwriting credits
It means that Cliff had contributed to the solid structure. He wrote riffs or harmonies on which the further
orchestration developed and other instrumental parts were based on. His bass
arrangements didn't count because they came after the guitar riffs. Another way to get a songwriting credit in Metallica is
to put those riffs together. This is why Lars Ulrich is considered a
co-writer of all Metallica songs
except a couple. From different interviews and books, we know which riffs belong to Cliff: Anesthesia
(the whole solo), Fight fire with fire (the intro)
Ride the Lightning (the intro's harmony part)
Fade to black (the harmonized bridge)
Creeping death (also the harmonized bridge)
Orion (most of the composition), Damage inc. (the intro)
To live is to die (the interlude, at least). So, only one song is missing, and you know
which one from the video's title. In spite of my best efforts to find out which riff from Master of Puppets
was Cliff's, there is no single interview, which could give us the answer. So, how are we going to reveal the truth?
There are three ways:
to ask Metallica
(reason 2 was a stupid joke, so I deleted it)
Or figure that out by ourselves. We cannot ask Metallica now
So the only option remain is is to try conduct our own investigation
Let's do it
So how Cliff composed in Metallica?
There wee three main ways: 1) a song was based on his idea (For Whom the Bell Tolls, Orion)
2) He added an extra riff to extend a song (for example the intros): 3) and most of his riffs were harmonized
There are seven core riffs in Master of puppets
intro, main riff, verse, pre-chorus, chorus
interlude and
the bridge before the last verse.What do you know about who composed them?
The pre-chorus riff was written by Kirk Hammett, which we learn from the issue of Master of Puppets
The main riff could be Kirk's too, since it reminds one from Exodus
James's demo tapes tell us what he brought to the song: intro, verse, chorus and interlude, including the harmonized solo
Some of you assumed that could be Cliff
who wrote that. It would make sense if James never composed own harmony riffs, but he did
So, the last piece of the puzzle is the bridge riff, which is closing the middle section of Master of Puppets
It's so fleeting and
overshadowed by other riffs, that a lot of people forget about this awesome riff
But it's always been one of my favorite Metallica licks
Since this is the last riff
we haven't identified and it seems to be an extension of the song, an extra riff with a harmony
Perhaps, the bridge belonged to Cliff Burton. What do you think about that?
