The Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses
taking some of the Spirit that was on Moses,
the Lord bestowed it on the 70 elders.
And as the Spirit came to rest on them, they prophesied.
Now two men, one named Eldad, and the other Medad,
were not in the gathering but had been left in the camp.
They, too, had been on the list but had not gone out
to the tent yet the Spirit came to rest on them also,
and they prophesied in the camp.
So when a young man quickly told Moses, Eldad, and Medad
are prophesying in the camp, Joshua son of Nun,
who from his youth had been Moses' aid, said,
"Moses, my lord, stop them!"
But Moses answered him, "Are you jealous for my sake?
"would that all the people of the Lord were prophets,
"would that the Lord might bestow His Spirit on them all."

The Gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- There is a story a few years ago about a hiker
who was hiking and had an accident.
He fell and a huge rock fell on him crushing his arm.
He tried everything he could think of to get free.
He waited for rescuers to come but they never came.
After a few days, he came to a decision that was a life
and death decision.
He could either stay there and wait to die
or he could cut off his arm and possibly live.
He decided to cut off his arm
and staggered out of the wilderness,
where he eventually reached help
and who got him to a hospital where he's treated
for exposure and dehydration.
And he survived.
The news picked up his story and he eventually
got an artificial arm.
He still goes hiking today.
The story was made into a movie called "127 Hours".
The choice he made allowed him to live.
We all have choices that we need to make
as to how we'll live our lives.
They may not be as dramatic as cutting off our arm
but we how we choose we will live.
We choose to live a certain way,
we make choices in our lives.
Our choice determines what direction our lives will take.
When we choose to sin, we make a choice in our lives,
and that choice has consequences.
If we tell a lie and get away with it,
it's much easier to tell a lie a second time.
If we look at pornography, it's much easier to do it again.
If we smoke marijuana, it's much easier to get
into something a little bit stronger.
When we gossip, it's easier to engage in gossip again.
If we're an alcoholic, after the first drink,
the second and the third get easier to take.
When we sin, at first we may have guilt
but after we keep sinning, the guilt tends to get less
and tends to go away.
We tend to get numb to the sin.
Jesus is calling us to look at those areas of our lives
that need to be repaired, that need to be fixed.
Sin can cause us to be paralyzed,
and can even lead us to death.
Sin captures us because it feels so good.
It holds us into a lifestyle that feels comfortable
even though it's wrong.
Jesus' advice may sound extreme,
but His point is right on.
Sin can become a routine.
A sinful habit can become normal.
So much part of us that we can't imagine our life
without it, that we can't see how that sin
hurts anyone else.
That sinful habit: alcohol or drug abuse,
selfishness, dishonesty, prejudice, gossip,
lying, procrastination, and the list could go on and on.
The lesson from this week's Gospel is this:
we must break some of the habits even though
it can cause us hurt because it's keepin' us
from a life that God has promised.
Our lives can be wasted if we're not willing
to make the tough choices and let go of some of those
things we think we need that are in conflict
with the Gospel.
Whatever is causing us to sin needs to be removed
from our lives.
We need to admit to God,
especially to the Sacrament of Reconciliation,
that we need help with this sin or that,
that we can't resolve the problem ourselves.
When we do this, healing can begin.
So where do we start?
We need to look at our daily life.
How do we party?
How to we treat family and friends?
How do we spend our time and money?
When we take a hard look, do we see any habits,
anything we do that conflicts with the Gospel?
If we find a simple habit then ask God
for the strength to cut it off.
It'd be hard at first, it'd be painful to do,
but if we want to live, we must do it.
We'll be thankful in the long run.
And let us stand.
And together we say.
