Here's Why Duchess Meghan Has Swapped Pale Pink Outfits For A Black Palette - Duration: 2:47.

Meghan is turning to black as her go-to colour to stop her outfits from 'taking away' from

the people she meets at royal engagements, experts say.

She stunned in a series of pale pink ensembles immediately after her wedding, but the Duchess

of Sussex, 37, has worn predominantly black on her official appearances since her summer

break - including the £2,510 Givenchy dress she wore on her first solo engagement at the

Royal Academy of Arts on Tuesday.

Meghan also wore a black Altuzarra suit for the WellChild Awards earlier this month, and

a Judith & Charles' black tuxedo dress at the Hamilton gala performance in London.

Meanwhile, the royal also wore an all-black ensemble beneath a blue coat at the launch

of her charity cookbook last week, while sticking to navy and black at the Core Awards on Tuesday.

Experts say that Meghan's choice of black suggests that she wants to prevent her outfits

detracting from the people she meets or causes that she is supporting at royal engagements.

Karen Haller, the UK's leading Applied Colour Psychology Specialist, told FEMAIL: 'Looking

at the occasions when the Duchess of Sussex is wearing black, this would suggest to me

from a colour psychology perspective she is OK with not being in the limelight, not wanting

to have the focus on her.

'Black has the ability have the wearer almost disappear and not be noticed.

This looks to be her way of deflecting attention off herself and onto the causes she is supporting

– putting them in the spotlight and centre stage.'

Celebrity stylish Rochelle White agreed that Meghan is trying to 'keep it simple' by sticking

predominantly to black.

'Meghan knows that everyone is paying close attention to her and everything that she wears,'

she said.

'I feel she is very conscious on the outfits she picks that are not only trendy, smart

and eye-catching but won't take away from what is dong.'

She noted that Meghan appears to be opting for a lot of tailoring of late, suggesting

she wants people to focus on the work she is doing.

'I think that Meghan is going for a more tailored approach as it comes across as business-like,'

Rochelle said.

Shortly after joining the royal family, Meghan opted for a wardrobe mainly consisting of

pale pinks and blush colours.

Experts have previously described this as 'passenger pink', a colour chosen by high

profile women married to powerful men to subtly demur to their partners.

However, others suggested that the Duchess's choice of pink was to 'sub-consciously communicate

through colour that she's clearly in love'.

Sewing Tutorial for Smocked Nightgown using Children's Corner Ruthie - Duration: 8:28.

Hey everyone, here is how I made this smocked nightgown for Audrey using the Children's

Corner Ruthie pattern. Ruthie lends itself really well to being pjs for your little girl

and I'm using this super-fine flannel as we're heading into Fall/Winter here. Everything

is linked down below as always. So to begin, I cut out two front yokes on

the fold as well as two back yokes on the fold. I also cut out two collars and I'm

going to embellish this dress using this knife pleated trim – some of my favorite stuff.

You are more than welcome to cut out the skirts from the patterns, I've done that before

and I have a video tutorial on that route. But in this video, I am smocking the skirt

and I'll get into those details a little later.

So I put the yoke together using that circle method, so you'll have a front, back, front,

back, and join all of them at the shoulder seams. Then you can open the shoulder seam

and iron them down. And when you fold the back yokes onto themselves,

you can see how the front of the dress is going to come together. For now I'm just

ironing the yokes together and then I move onto the collars.

I sew that pleated trim onto the collar first and then I put the collar right sides together

with its lining and sew the two together with the previous stitches holding that trim down

facing up. I sew just inside those previous stitches.

Then I turned the collar right sides out and gave it a good ironing before attaching it

to the collar to the yoke. I pull the yoke lining out of the way and pin the collar to

the yoke. I baste the collar in place first, and then I fold the yoke lining onto the yoke,

kinda making a collar sandwich, and then sew around the neckline again from one center

back all the way around to the other center back.

Then I clip those curves real well and turn the yoke right sides out. I take my time giving

everything a really good ironing. Then I moved onto the skirt. So I smocked

the top of this skirt and the measurements are going to vary depending on the size that

you're making as well as what fabric you are using, but I go into detail in another

video on how you can figure this out on your own. Actually, I have two methods, one using

simple math and the other going off the geometry of the situation.

So once I had my skirt pieces all pleated and blocked, then I turned under the facing

on the front of the skirts under about an inch and a quarter, sewed along that edge,

and then turned it under again another 1.25 or so.

At this point, my skirt pieces are ready to be sewn on and I can set them aside until

after I sew on the sleeve. Now I thought of my sleeve treatment after

I cut out the sleeve, so here I'm adding a strip of fabric – something around 2 inches.

But had I thought of this before I cut my sleeve out, I would've just extended that

sleeve so I didn't need to add a seam at the bottom of the sleeve, but such as life.

So after sewing on my little strip, then I ironed the raw edge under and sewed that in

place. Yupp, this means that I had to switch from my beloved white thread. And just an

fyi, in case you're in a similar boat, don't have a lot of bobbins, you can actually wind

another thread right on top of a previous thread. Just fyi 

So I sewed down that folded edge and then I sewed about 3/8" away from that. This

creates a casing and allows me to put a piece of elastic in there to sinch down the wrist

area. I thread the elastic through using a safety pin. I sew down one side and then continue

to push the elastic through until it pops out the other side, and then I sew that side

down. From there, I put two rows of gather stitches

in the top of the sleeve. Having two rows of gather stitches really helps your stitches

from going crocked on you when you sew over top of them later on. I gather up the sleeve

and before I attach it, I turn under the raw edge of the yoke lining, iron that down, and

then pin the sleeve to the armhole, making sure that those folded edges of the yoke lining

stay folded. So then I sewed the sleeve to the dress, and

after I was done sewing, I trimmed up that seam and ran a zigzag over to enclose those

raw edges. Then I pulled out that visible gathering thread

and sewed the side seams together using French seams. And I have a detailed video on French

seams that is linked below. So bear with me on this hem – I'm actually

going to show two options. First I thought I was going to do a normal, wide hem. To do

this, I fold that raw edge up about ½" all the way around and iron that in place.

Then I folded it up five inches in the front of the skirt, put a pin, went over a little

ways and put another pin at the five inch mark. Then I iron in between the pins and

call that good enough for me. So there are two ways to fold this hem up with the facing,

basically one leaves a gap on the side of the skirt and the other leaves that gap on

the bottom of the skirt. I prefer the method that leaves the gap at the bottom of the skirt.

So I sewed all the way around the skirt. And then to make that little bottom facing/hem

area a little neater, I double thread a needle and that allows me to secure my thread without

the use of a knot and no tails to hide – it's just super quick and easy. Then I whip stitch

from the lining fabric to the outer edge of that fold. So basically, I'm being careful

that I don't go to the right side of the dress and I'm covering that inside fabric….

blah… sorry I'm not the best at explaining something through words – just see what

I'm doing here. lol then I tie off by creating a loop, going through that loop twice, and

sending my needle between the lining and fabric so those thread tails will be hidden.

Then I tried this on my growing girl and it was SUPER SHORT. So, I ripped all of that

out and instead I ripped two 6.5 inch strips. This fabric is about 60 inches wide, so that

means I'm working with about 120 inches after I sew the strips together.

Then I sew the edges on the ends together with right sides together. After I trim up

that seam, I turn this whole thing right sides out. After ironing the strip together, then

I put in two rows of gather stitches through both layers of fabric. Then I draw up those

gather threads and now I've got myself a ruffle. I set this ruffle aside and grab my

dress so I can sew on this trim at the bottom. Then I take my ruffle and pin that in place,

adjusting the gathers so they are evenly distributed. Then I sew the ruffle to the dress with the

previous stitches of the trim facing up so I can sew just inside those stitches.

Finally, I serge this edge. Yes I know, serging little toddler clothes isn't a habit for

me, but the seam was rather bulky, so I went for it. And there you have it, a smocked nightgown

using the CC Ruthie pattern. I hope this video was helpful. If you have

any questions, please leave them in the comments below and I'll do my best to answer them.

As always, I appreciate y'all for watching and I hope to catch ya next time.
