>> Reporter: WHAT CAN YOU TELL

US ABOUT THE DEAL?

>> IT WILL BE TOMORROW.

>> Reporter: IT WILL BE

TOMORROW YOU SAID?

>> [indiscernible]

>> Rosemary: YOU'RE WATCHING

"THE NATIONAL," AND WE HAVE

BREAKING NEWS ON NAFTA.

THESE ARE CABINET MINISTERS

ARRIVING JUST MOMENTS AGO FOR AN

EMERGENCY CABINET MEETING.

WE ARE HEARING THAT TONIGHT,

JUST HOURS BEFORE A DEADLINE

IMPOSED BY THE UNITED STATES, A

DEAL HAS BEEN REACHED.

KATIE SIMPSON IS STANDING

OUTSIDE OF THE PRIME MINISTER'S

OFFICE WITH US NOW.

AFTER MONTHS OF TALKS, KATIE,

MORE THAN 13, IN FACT, THE TWO

SIDES ARE NOW SAYING THEY HAVE

HAMMERED THINGS OUT.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HOW

THEY GOT THE DEAL DONE?

>> Reporter: ROSIE, I JUST GOT

OFF THE PHONE WITH THE SENIOR

SOURCE WHO SAID TO ME JUST VERY

QUICKLY, DEAL IS DONE.

IT IS A DONE DEAL.

SO A SENIOR SOURCE WITH DIRECT

KNOWLEDGE OF THE SITUATION CAN

CONFIRM THAT CANADA HAS REACHED

SOME SORT OF AGREEMENT ON NAFTA

WITH THE UNITED STATES.

AND NOW WE WAIT TO FIND OUT

EXACTLY WHAT CANADA HAS AGREED

TO.

A LITTLE BIT LATER TONIGHT WE'RE

EXPECTING THE MEXICAN SENATE TO

GET A COPY OF THE TEXT OF AN

AGREEMENT SO WE MIGHT GET

INSIGHT INTO EXACTLY WHAT IS

GOING ON IN TERMS OF EXACTLY

WHAT CANADA DID AGREE TO.

BUT THIS COMES AFTER A WEEKEND

OF VERY TENSE NEGOTIATIONS.

THIS ENTIRE 13-MONTH PROCESS

COULD BE DESCRIBED AS A VERY

INTENSE, VERY STRESSFUL ORDEAL.

BUT IT LOOKS LIKE WHATEVER WAS

PUT ON THE TAKE IN THIS FINAL

STRETCH TO GET TO A DEAL BEFORE

OCTOBER 1st, IT LOOKS LIKE ALL

SIDES HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REACH

SOME SORT OF COMPROMISE HERE.

THE U.S. AND MEXICO HAD BEEN

PRESSURING CANADA TO AGREE TO A

NAFTA ON THEIR TERMS BY THIS

DAY, BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO

START THE PROCESS TO HAVE THE

LEADERS OF ALL THREE COUNTRIES

SIGN OFF ON A NEW RENEGOTIATED

NAFTA BEFORE DECEMBER 1st.

DECEMBER 1st IS IMPORTANT

BECAUSE THAT IS THE DAY THAT THE

NEW MEXICAN PRESIDENT TAKES

OFFICE.

AND THERE HAD BEEN CONCERN THAT

IF THIS WASN'T DEALT WITH BY

THAT TIME THAT THE NEW MEXICAN

PRESIDENT WOULD WANT TO REOPEN

THE DEAL AND TRY TO CHANGE SOME

OF THE PARAMETERS OF WHAT THE

U.S. AND MEXICO ALREADY AGREED

TO.

SO THAT'S WHY THE U.S. AND

MEXICO WERE REALLY PUSHING,

PRESSURING CANADA, SAYING THAT

TO THEM THIS IS A REAL DEADLINE,

OCTOBER 1st IS A REAL

DEADLINE.

THE CANADIANS HAD BEEN VERY

COMFORTABLE SAYING THEY WOULD

PLAY DEADLINE SPOILER, THAT THEY

ARE IN THIS FOR A GOOD DEAL AND

NOT A FAST DEAL.

AND THAT POLITICAL PRESSURE

ALONE WAS NOT GOING TO BE ENOUGH

TO GET CONCESSIONS OUT OF

CANADA.

WE KNOW THAT CONCESSIONS HAVE

BEEN VERY DIFFICULT ON KEY

ISSUES.

THERE ARE FAR MORE THAN THREE

KEY ISSUES HERE BUT THE ONES

GETTING ATTENTION IS DAIRY,

CHAPTER 19 AND PROTECTING

TARIFFS.

AND NOW WE WAIT TO HEAR WHAT

THOSE DETAILS ARE.

>> Rosemary: KATIE SIMPSON

WILL STAND BY AND BRING US THAT

THROUGHOUT THE EVENING.

THANK YOU.

JUDGE,.

>> NOW THE DISPUTE RESOLUTION

MECHANISM WAS ALWAYS A MUST,

THAT'S CHAPTER 19 FOR CANADA.

BUT ONLY ONE OF THE THREE BIG

ISSUES FOR THE AGREEMENT THAT

HAS TRANSFORMED THE TRADE

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THESE TWO

COUNTRIES.

THE AMOUNT OF MONEY NOW CROSSING

BACK AND FORTH IS DIZZYING, FROM

ROUGHLY $280 BILLION IN 1993

JUST BEFORE NAFTA CAME INTO

EFFECT, TO ALMOST $800 BILLION

LAST YEAR.

BUT FOR CANADA', TWO INDUSTRIES

HAVE BEEN OF SPECIAL CONCERN.

>> I THINK THAT ANY BREACH OF

THE CANADIAN SUPPLY MANAGEMENT

SYSTEM WOULD BE A FULL ATTACK ON

AGRICULTURE IN GENERAL IN

CANADA.

>> Rosemary: TRUMP HAS LONG

TARGETED CANADA'S SUPPLY

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.

CANADA HAS OPENED UP THE DAIRY

SECTOR IN THE PAST, AT LEAST

SLIGHTLY, TO PASS A FREE-TRADE

DEAL WITH THE E.U. AND WITH THE

TRANSPACIFIC PARTNERSHIP

NATIONS.

BUT THAT'S SMALL POTATOES

COMPARED TO THE COMPETITION WITH

AMERICAN DAIRY FARMERS.

>> President Donald Trump:

WE'RE THINKING OF JUST TAXING

CARS COMING IN FROM CANADA.

THAT'S THE MOTHERLOAD, THAT'S

THE BIG ONE.

>> Rosemary: THAT'S KEPT

CANADIAN NEGOTIATORS UP AT

NIGHT.

CANADA PRODUCES 2.5 MILLION CARS

A YEAR AND EMPLOYING HALF A

MILLION PEOPLE, EITHER ON THE

ASSEMBLY LINES, MAKING PARTS, OR

AT DEALERSHIPS.

SO THOSE ARE SOME OF THE ISSUES

AT PLAY AND HAVE HOPEFULLY BEEN

RESOLVED, WE'LL FIND OUT IN THE

COMING HOURS.

BUT WHAT COULD THIS MEAN FOR THE

TRUDEAU GOVERNMENT?

FOR INSIGHT INTO HOW THIS PLAYS

OUT POLITICALLY, HERE'S OUR

NATIONAL AFFAIRS EDITOR CHRIS

HALL.

SO, OKAY, CHRIS, THERE'S A DEAL

BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHAT IS IN IT.

SO GIVE US A SENSE WHAT TO LOOK

FOR NOW IN THE NEXT COUPLE

HOURS?

>> Reporter: I THINK THAT THE

MOST IMPORTANT THINGS ARE THE

ONES THAT KATIE TOUCHED ON FROM

THE CANADA STANDPOINT.

THAT IS, WHAT CONCESSIONS DID

THEY HAVE TO MAKE ON DAIRY?

IN OTHER WORDS, TO WHAT EXTENT

WILL AMERICAN DAIRY FARMERS NOW

HAVE GREATER ACCESS TO THE

CANADIAN MARKET.

WE KNOW THAT IS A HUGE ISSUE AND

IT HAS BEEN ONE THAT HAS LED TO

PROTESTS IN THE PAST ON

PARLIAMENT HILL.

PEOPLE REMEMBER IN 2015 WHEN

GREATER ACCESS WAS GIVEN TO THE

10 PACIFIC RIM NATION WHOSE

SIGNED THIS TRANSPACIFIC

PARTNERSHIP, THAT THERE WERE

PROTESTS ON THE STREET WITH

LIVESTOCK AND MILK BEING SPILLED

SO THAT'S CLEARLY AN ISSUE.

COMPENSATION FOR THOSE FARMERS

IN THE INDUSTRY NOW AND ARE

SUPPORTED BY THE SLY MANAGEMENT SUPPLY

MANAGEMENT OR QUOTESA.

AND IF QUÉBEC PEOPLE GO TO THE

POLLS TOMORROW.

WE KNOW THAT PHILIPPE COUILLARD

HAS SAID THAT SHE'LL GO TO

COURT, AND JEAN-FRANCOIS LISEE

SAID SOMETHING SIMILAR.

AND SO THAT COULD BE A BIG ISSUE

FOR THE TRUDEAU GOVERNMENT TO

CONFRONT.

>> Rosemary: THERE ARE LOTS OF

POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS HERE FOR

THE GOVERNMENT, OBVIOUSLY, THEY

PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN WORSE

IF THEY HADN'T GOT A DEAL.

BUT GIVE US A SENSE HOW THIS

PLAYS OUT IN THE SELL JOB THAT

HAS TO COME NEXT.

>> Reporter: IT'S REALLY

INTERESTING, ISN'T IT?

JUSTIN TRUDEAU SAID THAT HE'D

TAKE NO DEAL OVER A BAD DEAL.

OF COURSE, PEOPLE WILL LOOK TO

SEE IF THIS IS, IN FACT, A GOOD

DEAL FOR THE AUTO SECTOR AND THE

DARE THAT HE WE JUST TALKED

ABOUT.

THE CONSERVATIVES WANTED A DEAL

A LONG TIME AGO UNDER ANDREW

SCHEER, SO CLEARLY AN ISSUE FOR

THEM TO RESPOND TO AND FOR NEW

DEMOCRATS AS WELL.

SO LOOK IN THE DAYS AHEAD,

ROSIE, FOR THE KIND OF

POSITIONING THAT WILL GO ON

AROUND HERE.

THE LIBERALS WANT TO SELL WHAT

WHATEVER IS AGREED TO AS A

BETTER DEAL THAN WHAT THEY WOULD

HAVE GOTTEN HAD THEY NOT HELD

OUT AS LONG AS THEY HAVE.

BUT THE OPPOSITION PARTIES WILL

CLEARLY TRY TO FIND WHAT'S

WRONG, WHAT'S MISSING, WHAT

SECTORS OF THE ECONOMY WILL BE

AT RISK.

AND WHERE THE POLITICAL UPSIDE

CAN BE GAPED.

>> Rosemary: CHRIS HALL HERE

WITH US TONIGHT.

THANK YOU, CHRIS.

SO AN AGREEMENT HAS BEEN

REACHED.

NOW WHAT?

WELL, FIRST IT WON'T BE LAW

RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE.

IT WILL BE 60 DAYS NOW BEFORE

THE SIGNATURE PROCESS IS

COMPLETE.

THAT IS IN THE UNITED STATES.

AND THEN IT GOES TO CONGRESS TO

BE RATIFIED SO WE'RE LOOKING AT

LATE WINTER OR EARLY SPRING BUT

AT THE VERY LEAST IT'S NOT

FALLEN APART.

WE'LL FOLLOW IT HERE ON CBC NEWS

NETWORK, A DEAL REACHED ON

NAFTA.

STAY WITH US, IT'S GOING TO BE A

BUSY ONE.

>> Adrienne: STILL TO COME

THIS HOUR ON "THE NATIONAL," A

B.C. WOMAN SAYS THAT THE

PROVINCE ISN'T HELPING PROBLEM

GAMBLERS BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST SO

LUCRATIVE.

SHE TELLS HER STORY TO OUR "GO

PUBLIC" TEAM AHEAD.

>> Rosemary: AFTER A TORNADO

RIPPED THROUGH OTTAWA AND

GATINEAU, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE

WERE LEFT WITH LITTLE OR NO CELL

SERVICE.

ADRIAEVAN DYER INVESTIGATES.

>> Adrienne: FIRST, MANY LIVES

ARE STILL AT RISK TWO DAYS AFTER

AFTER EARTHQUAKE AND A TSUNAMI.

>>> TONIGHT PARTS OF INDONESIA

LOOK MORE LIKE A LANDFILL SITE

STREWN WITH WRECKAGE THAN A

PLACE WHERE PEOPLE LIVED AND

WORKED.

THE SHEER DESTRUCTION IS

HORRIFYING ON ITS OWN

BUT THE DEATH TOLL IS SURGING.

THE ESTIMATES WENT FROM DOZENS

DEAD ON FRIDAY NIGHT TO MORE

THAN 800 CONFIRMED TODAY.

TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED...

AS A MASSIVE WAVE BORE DOWN ON

THE COASTAL CITY OF PALU, PEOPLE

REACTED IN TERROR.

IT WAS TRIGGERED BY A 7.5

MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE THAT STRUCK

NORTH OF PALU CLOSE TO DONGGALA,

A REGION OF ABOUT 300,000 PEOPLE

THAT HAS BEEN CUT OFF EVER

SINCE.

FOR NOW MOST CONFIRMED

CASUALTIES ARE IN PALU.

ON SATURDAY WOMEN JUST WEPT IN

THE STREETS AFTER AN AFTERSHOCK

MADE THOSE FRAYED NERVES MUCH

WORSE.

WITH THE LOCAL AIRPORT CLOSED

YESTERDAY, RELIEF WORKERS HAD TO

MAKE THEIR WAY BY ROAD FROM THE

NEXT NEAREST AIRPORT.

THAT'S ABOUT A 12-HOUR DRIVE.

AND ALL OF THOSE ROADS ARE LINED

WITH BODY BAGS THAT OFFICIALS

SAY THAT AT LEAST 17,000 PEOPLE

HAVE BEEN LEFT HOMELESS.

A TSUNAMI EARLY WARNING SYSTEM

HAS BEEN IN DEVELOPMENT THERE

FOR YEARS WITH THE HELP OF

INTERNATIONAL FUNDING, BUT WHEN

A POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE HIT IN

2016 IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE

22 UNDERWATER SENSORS JUST

DIDN'T WORK, EITHER BECAUSE OF

VANDALISM OR POOR MAINTENANCE.

RENÉE FILIPPONE WATCHES

DEVELOPING STORIES LIKE THIS FOR

US ON SUNDAY NIGHTS.

SO, RENEE, WHAT'S THE LATEST ON

THE RECOVERY EFFORT?

>> Reporter: WELL, ADRIENNE,

IT'S EARLY MONDAY MORNING IN

INDONESIA AND THE SEARCH IS

GETTING UNDERWAY FOR YET ANOTHER

DAY.

RIGHT NOW THE DEATH TOLL SITS AT

832, BUT IT MOST CERTAINLY WILL

GROW.

OFFICIALS ON THE GROUND FEAR

THAT THOUSANDS ARE DEAD, PARTLY

BECAUSE NO ONE KNOWS HOW MANY

PEOPLE ARE STILL TRAPPED.

NOW NEW HEAVY EQUIPMENT HAS

ARRIVED TO GET TO THE PEOPLE WHO

ARE TRAPPED.

IT'S BELIEVED THAT HUNDREDS ARE

BURIED IN JUST ONE RESIDENTIAL

COMPLEX THAT COLLAPSED.

THREE DAYS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

RESCUERS SAY THEY CAN STILL HEAR

VOICES.

NOW THE EFFORT IS PARTICULARLY

CHALLENGING BECAUSE

THE HARDEST HIT AREAS ARE TOUGH

TO ACCESS, ROADS AND BRIDGES

WERE WASHED OUT.

THE AIRPORT WAS DAMAGED AND IT

IS NOW BACK OPEN BUT ONLY FOR

EMERGENCY CREWS.

SO IT'S NOW A RACE AGAINST THE

CLOCK FOR THE TEAMS ON THE

GROUND.

>> THE MAIN THING IS ABOUT

HEALTH ISSUES BECAUSE OF THE

RISKS.

THEY ARE LIVING UNDER THE TENT

AND IN THE

OPEN SPACE AND OPEN AIR.

AND THIS MAKES THEM PRONE TO

DISEASE AND ALSO MOSQUITOES AND

OPEN SPACE MAY MAKE THEM

VULNERABLE TO SICKNESS.

>> Reporter: NOW THERE'S A

DESPERATE NEED IN THE AREA NOW

FOR FOOD, WATER, AND HEALTH

CARE.

AND THE SAD REALITY, ADRIENNE,

IS THAT WITH SO MANY DEAD IN

THIS REMOTE AND INACCESSIBLE

AREA, CREWS ARE NOW DIGGING MASS

GRAVES IN ORDER TO HELP TO

PREVENT THE SPREAD OF DISEASE.

ADRIENNE?

>> Adrienne: RENEE, THANK YOU

VERY MUCH.

ONE IN PARTICULAR IS GETTING

ATTENTION.

IT'S THE FUNERAL FOR A

21-YEAR-OLD.

HIS NAME WAS ANTONIAS.

THAT'S A NAME THAT INDONESIANS

MAY TALK ABOUT FOR A LONG TIME.

HE WAS WORKING AS AN AIR TRAFFIC

CONTROLLER IN PALU WHEN THE

EARTHQUAKE STRUCK.

WHEN THE BUILDING BEGAN TO SHAKE

AND HIS COLLEAGUES LEFT, HE

STAYED BEHIND.

THERE WAS ONE LAST FLIGHT THAT

HE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT TOOK

OFF SAFELY.

ONCE IT DID, HE JUMPED FROM THE

FOURTH FLOOR WINDOW OF THE TOWER

THINKING THAT IT WAS ON THE

VERGE OF COLLAPSE.

HE BROKE SOME BONES AND RECEIVED

SOME INTERNAL INJURIES AND HE

DIDN'T MAKE IT.

THE PILOT OF THE FLIGHT HE

SAFELY CLEARED POSTED A VIDEO OF

HIS VIEW ONCE AIRBORNE AND WROTE

ON INSTAGRAM, "THANK YOU FOR

KEEPING ME AND GUARDING ME SO

I'M SAFELY AIRBORNE."

SO WHILE WE TALK ABOUT NAFTA

THERE'S ANOTHER STORY THAT IS

DOMINATING HEADLINES IN THE

UNITED STATES.

THE U.S. SUPREME COURT BEGINS A

NEW TERM TOMORROW MORNING,

MISSING ITS NINTH JUDGE,

EFFECTIVELY THE TIE-BREAKER.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP'S NOMINEE

BRETT KAVANAUGH IS BACK UNDER

INVESTIGATION BY THE F.B.I. OVER

SEXUAL ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS.

NOW AS PAUL HUNTER TELLS US,

QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS STILL

HOVER OVER THAT INVESTIGATION.

>> JUDGE KAVANAUGH, ARE YOU

READY TO BEGIN?

>> OH, HELL YEAH.

[laughter]

>> Reporter: IT WAS, INDEED,

THE STUFF OF INSTANT MOCKERY.

LAST NIGHT "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE"

WITH MATT DAMON'S PARODY OF A

PERFORMANCE THAT HAS BAFFLED SO

MANY AMERICANS.

>> WOULD YOU AGREE TO AN F.B.I.

INVESTIGATION?

>> YOU WANT A REAL

INVESTIGATION?

JUST LOOK AT -- LOOK AT MY

CALENDAR.

[laughter]

I'M INNOCENT OF THIS CHARGE.

>> AND YOU'RE PREPARED FOR AN

F.B.I. INVESTIGATION?

>> Reporter: THE REAL-LIFE

BRETT KAVANAUGH WHO SEEMED TO

EVADE THAT QUESTION LAST WEEK

NOW FACES AN F.B.I.

INVESTIGATION REGARDLESS.

DIGGING INTO HIS SCHOOL DAYS AND

SOME OF THOSE ALLEGATIONS OF

SEXUAL ASSAULT, PROMPTED BY LAST

WEEK'S TESTIMONY BY CHRISTINE

BLASEY FORD.

>> I BELIEVED HE WAS GOING

TO RAPE ME.

>> Reporter: BUT TODAY THE

QUESTION IS QUICKLY BECOME HOW

FAR WILL THE F.B.I. BE ALLOWED

TO GO WITH REPORTS THIS WEEKEND

SUGGESTING THAT IT'S BEING TOLD

TO LIMIT WHERE IT LOOKS.

WORRYING THE DEMOCRATS.

>> I'M VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS

BECAUSE THE WHITE HOUSE SHOULD

NOT BE ALLOWED TO MICROMANAGE AN

F.B.I. INVESTIGATION.

>> President Donald Trump: I

WOULD EXPECT THAT IT'S GOING TO

TURN OUT VERY WELL...

>> Reporter: FROM THE WHITE

HOUSE, MIXED SIGNALS.

DONALD TRUMP SAYING THAT THE

F.B.I. CAN INTERVIEW WHOMEVER

THEY WANT.

>> IT WILL BE LIMITED IN

SCOPE...

>> Reporter: BUT TRUMP

COUNSELLOR KELLYANNE CONWAY

TODAY EMPHASIZED THE F.B.I.'S

RESTRICTIONS.

>> NOT GOING TO BE A PHISHING

EXPEDITION.

>> Reporter: BUT THEN CONWAY

HAD ANOTHER UNEXPECTED COMMENT

ABOUT HER OWN LIFE EXPERIENCE.

>> I FEEL VERY EMPATHETIC,

FRANKLY, FOR VICTIMS OF SEXUAL

ASSAULT AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT

AND RAPE.

THAT -- I AM A VICTIM OF A

SEXUAL ASSAULT.

>> Reporter: SHE GAVE NO OTHER

DETAILS, BUT WHILE MAKING NO

SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO THE

KAVANAUGH HEARING SHE EMPHASIZED

VICTIMS OF ASSAULT SHOULD BE

HEARD BUT IN A COURTROOM, NOT ON

CAPITOL HILL.

>> WE DO TREAT PEOPLE

DIFFERENTLY WHO ARE EITHER THE

VICTIMS OR PERPETRATORS OF THIS

BASED ON THEIR POLITICS NOW AND

BASED ON THEIR GENDER.

AND IT'S A HUGE MISTAKE.

AMERICA, IT'S A HUGE MISTAKE.

>> Reporter: MEANWHILE THE

F.B.I. IS MOVING QUICKLY.

TODAY INTERVIEWING DEBORAH

RAMIREZ, THE SECOND WOMAN

ACCUSING KAVANAUGH OF SEXUAL

MISCONDUCT.

SHE IS SAID TO HAVE ANSWERED

THEIR QUESTIONS AND PROVIDED THE

NAMES OF WITNESSES.

PAUL HUNTER, CBC NEWS,

WASHINGTON.

>> Adrienne: A NEW

REUTERS/IPSOS POLL SHOWS THAT

THE DIVIDE AMONG AMERICANS OVER

THE SEXUAL ASSAULT ALLEGATION

SAYS REALLY DEEP.

42% OF ADULTS POLLED SAY THEY

BELIEVE FORD'S ALLEGATIONS

AGAINST KAVANAUGH.

31% SAY THEY DO NOT BELIEVE

THEM.

AND 27% SAID THEY JUST DON'T

KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE.

>>> Rosemary: BACK TO POLITICS

IN THIS COUNTRY AND THE DRAMA

THAT IS BUILDING IN QUÉBEC AFTER

39 DAYS OF CAMPAIGNING.

THE ELECTION IS HOURS AWAY AND

THE PARTY LEADERS MADE FINAL

PITCHES TO VOTERS.

THE LIBERAL LEADER PHILIPPE

COUILLARD DID A BLITZ WHERE HIS

ERNING PARTY DID SEEM TO BE

SLIPPING OR LOSING THE

FRANCOPHONE VOTE.

THE POLLS HAVE THEM

NECK-AND-NECK AND THERE'S

PARALLELS WITH LAST WEEK'S VOTE

IN NEW BRUNSWICK WHERE NO PARTY

MANAGED TO WIN A CLEAR MAJORITY.

CBC'S JAELA BERNSTIEN LOOKS AT

WHAT

HAS CHANGED AND TALKS TO VOTERS

WHO ARE PAYING AWFULLY CLOSE

ATTENTION.

[Applause]

>> Reporter: AFTER FOUR YEARS

OF LIBERAL GOVERNMENT, MANY

QUÉBECERS HAVE A THIRST FOR

CHANGE.

>> PICKING THE THING THAT IS

LESS WORSE AND THAT'S SOMETHING

THAT I THINK THAT ALL OF THE

QUÉBECERS HAVE BEEN DOING LATELY

TO JUST PICK WHAT IS LESS WORSE.

>> Reporter: POLLS SUGGEST

THAT VOTERS MAY BE READY TO

ELECT A NEW PARTY, ONE THAT'S

NEVER FORMED GOVERNMENT BEFORE.

FRANÇOIS LEGAULT'S COALITION

AVENIR QUÉBEC.

THOUGH SOME WORRY THAT IT WOULD

BE A CHANGE IN NAME ONLY.

>> NOT JUST BRING NEW IDEAS AND

JUST CRUISE ON THE WIND OF

CHANGE IDEA.

>> Reporter: SOME ARE ALSO

FEELING DISCOURAGED BY THE MUD

SLINGING AND THE PERSONAL

ATTACKS THAT HAVE COLOURED THE

FINAL WEEK OF THE CAMPAIGN.

>> THEY COULD TALK ABOUT, LIKE,

WHAT THEY REALLY WANT TO CHANGE,

BUT INSTEAD THEY'RE JUST

ATTACKING EACH OTHER.

AND IT'S SAD.

>> Reporter: FOR THE PAST 48

YEARS THE QUÉBEC GOVERNMENT HAS

SEE-SAWED BETWEEN THE FEDERALIST

LIBERALS AND THE SOVEREIGNIST

PARTI QUEBECOIS.

THAT POLITICAL DYNAMIC APPEARS

TO BE ON ITS WAY OUT.

>> NOTHING IS FOR SURE,

EVERYTHING IS UP IN THE AIR AS

WE SPEAK.

BUT THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE THAT

MR. LEGAULT WILL BE HEADING A

MINORITY GOVERNMENT.

>> Reporter: FOR MUCH OF THE

CAMPAIGN THE C.A.Q. AND THE

LIBERALS HAVE BEEN NECK-IN-NECK

WHEN IT COMES TO THE POPULAR

VOTE.

BECAUSE THEY'RE SO CLOSE THE

OTHER TWO PARTIES, THE P.Q. AND

QUÉBEC SOLIDAIRE, COULD

INFLUENCE A MINORITY GOVERNMENT.

>> ALL OF THE PEOPLE THAT I HAVE

BEEN TALKING TO ABOUT THE

ELECTIONS THEY SAY THAT THE

QUÉBEC SOLIDAIRE IS GETTING TO

GET MORE SEATS, I GUESS.

WHICH IS GOOD.

>> Reporter: WHILE MANY YOUNG

MONTREALERS FEEL THAT

WAY, IT MIGHT BE DECIDED BY

BALLOTS CAST OUTSIDE THE CITY IN

THE REST OF THE PROVINCE.

>> THE C.A.Q. IS CONCENTRATING

ON THOSE RIDINGS, ON THOSE SEATS

TO WIN.

SO THEY MIGHT JUST WIN THE

GOVERNMENT WITHOUT HAVING A

SINGLE RIDING ON THE ISLAND OF

MONTRÉAL.

>> Reporter: STILL, HE SAYS

THAT AFTER YEARS OF COVERING

QUÉBEC POLITICS THAT HE LEARNED

TO ALWAYS BE READY FOR A

SURPRISE.

>> Rosemary: JAELA IS JOINING

ME NOW FROM QUÉBEC CITY.

JAELA, THERE WAS ONE ISSUE THAT

NOT A

LOT OF PEOPLE WERE TALKING ABOUT

DURING THIS CAMPAIGN AND THAT'S

SOVEREIGNTY.

WHY NOT?

>> Reporter: WELL, ONE OF THE

THINGS AT PLAY HERE IS THAT THE

SOVEREIGNIST PARTI QUEBECOIS,

THEY HAVE SAID IF THEY WERE TO

BE ELECTED THEY WOULD ONLY HOLD

A REFERENDUM IN A SECOND MANDATE

MANDATE.

SO FAR THEY HAVE BEEN POLLING

THIS THIRD PLACE.

BUT ANOTHER FACTOR THAT YOU HAVE

TO CONSIDER IS THAT WHEN YOU

TALK TO THE AVERAGE QUÉBECER,

EVEN IF THEY DO BELIEVE IN

SOVEREIGNTY, THAT'S JUST REALLY

WHAT'S NOT TOP OF MIND FOR A LOT

OF PEOPLE RIGHT IN THIS

PROVINCE.

THEY'RE CONCERNED WITH PRESSING

ISSUES LIKE HEALTH CARE,

EDUCATION, TRANSIT AND

INFRASTRUCTURE.

SO REALLY WE'VE BEEN SEEING A

FUNDAMENTAL SHIFT, AT LEAST IN

THIS ELECTION CAMPAIGN, IN THE

WAY THAT ELECTION CAMPAIGNS IN

QUÉBEC PLAY OUT.

>> Rosemary: JAELA, IT WILL BE

AN EXCITING NIGHT TOMORROW

NIGHT.

WE'LL SEE YOU THEN.

>> Reporter: MY PLEASURE.

>> Rosemary: WE'RE TRACKING

THE BREAKING NEWS, A DEAL HAS

BEEN REACHED ON NAFTA.

AT THIS HOUR THE PRIME MINISTER

IS INSIDE HIS OFFICE WITH

CABINET MINISTERS HOLDING A

MEETING.

>> Reporter: DEAL OR NO DEAL,

MR. PRIME MINISTER?

DEAL OR NO DEAL?

>> Rosemary: HERE HE IS

ARRIVING JUST A COUPLE HOURS

AGO.

NOT REVEALING ANYTHING.

BUT, HE WAS HEADING THERE TO

MEET WITH CABINET MINISTERS AND

TO GIVE THEM A BRIEFING ABOUT

WHERE THE NEGOTIATIONS ARE AT

AFTER MORE THAN 13 MONTHS OF

TALKS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES

AND CANADA AND MEXICO.

THAT IS JUST OUTSIDE OF THE

BUILDING AT THIS HOUR.

WE'RE WAITING TO HEAR MORE ABOUT

THE DEAL AND, OF COURSE, THE

DETAILS OF WHAT CANADA WON AND

WHAT WE CONCEDED WHR. IT BE ON

CHAPTER 19, DISPUTE RESOLUTION

MECHANISM.

DAIRY AND ALSO AUTOS.

SOME OF THE KEY STICKING POINTS

IN THESE NEGOTIATIONS.

WE'LL HAVE MORE FOR YOU

THROUGHOUT THE EVENING.

BUT STILL AHEAD ON "THE

NATIONAL," THE SUNDAY INTERVIEW.

MARK CRITCH TALKS ABOUT THE

COMEDY BUG AND MAKING FUN OF

POLITICIANS AND THAT ONE TIME

THAT HE MIGHT HAVE GONE A LITTLE

TOO FAR.

>> Adrienne: AND WE LOOK AT

WHY SO MANY WERE LEFT WITHOUT

CELL SERVICE AFTER THE

DEVASTATING TORNADOES IN ONTARIO

AND QUÉBEC.

>> Rosemary: AND A HARD LOOK

AT THE PROFITS THAT PROVINCES

MAKE FROM GAMBLING.

>> I HAVE FLASH BACKS OF ME

CRYING HYSTERICALLY AT THE

MACHINE.

THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE ME

WITH MENTAL ILLNESS.

>> Rosemary: WE'LL TALK TO ONE

WOMAN WHO IS TAKING ON THE B.C.

GOVERNMENT WHEN SHE "GOES

PUBLIC."

THAT IS NEXT.

(*)

>> Adrienne: THAT CLEANUP IS

WELL UNDERWAY IN THE

OTTAWA-GATINEAU REGION BUT SO

MUCH HAS BEEN RUINED, SO MANY

PROBLEMS LAID BARE.

THAT INCLUDES A SITUATION

OFFICIALS REALISED IN THE EARLY

AFTERMATH OF THE STORM, THE

INABILITY TO COMMUNICATE BOTH

WITH THEIR STAFF AND THE PUBLIC.

EVAN DYER EXPLAINS WHY THAT

HAPPENED AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN.

>> Reporter: THE TORNADOES

TORE A SWATH OF DESTRUCTION

THROUGH THE NATION'S CAPITAL,

WRECKING HOMES AND UPROOTING

TREES.

WHEN IT WAS OVER THE CITY'S CELL

TOWERS WERE STILL STANDING.

BUT AS THE HOURS TICKED BY

PEOPLE BEGAN TO NOTICE A STRANGE

PHENOMENON, INCLUDING THE CITY'S

MANAGER.

>> MY CELLPHONE ON FRIDAY NIGHT

WAS NOT WORKING AND I COULDN'T

GET A SIGNAL.

I HAD TO LEAVE MY HOUSE AND

DRIVE INTO TOWN UNTIL I FOUND A

COUPLE BARS SO I COULD OPERATE

WITH THE EMERGENCY OPERATION

CENTRE.

I WAS SITTING IN THE CAR IN MY

PYJAMAS.

IT'S THE TRUTH, I SWEAR TO GOD.

>> Reporter: THE TORNADOES

BROUGHT MASSIVE POWER CUTS AND

AS THE POWER CUTS DRAGGED ON,

THE CELL TOWERS AROUND THE CITY

SAW

THEIR SIGNALS WEAKEN AND THEN

WINK OUT.

>> IT'S NOT A SURPRISE BECAUSE

OUR CELLPHONES CONNECT TO THE

CELLULAR TOWERS AND CELLULAR

TOWERS, THEY ARE POWERED BY THE

GRID.

SO IF THERE'S AN OUTAGE OF THE

POWER GRIDS THERE'S DEFINITELY

PROBLEMS WITH CELL

COMMUNICATIONS.

SO MOST OF THE TIME THEY HAVE

BACKUP BATTERIES BUT THOSE

BACKUP BATTERIES WILL ONLY LAST

FOR A SHORT TIME.

>> Reporter: THE PROBLEM IS

MADE WORSE BY THE FACT THAT

AFTER A NATURAL DISASTER

CELLPHONE USE TYPICALLY GOES UP

AS PEOPLE CALL 911 AND CHECK ON

FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

AND THAT DRAWS DOWN THE

BATTERIES EVEN FASTER.

>> THEY HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS,

THAT THIS IS DEFINITELY A BIG

PROBLEM IN THE INDUSTRY.

AND THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE BACKUP

BATTERIES AND THAT'S WHY ALSO

SOMETIMES THEY HAVE EVEN DIESEL

ENGINES THERE.

BUT, AGAIN, IF YOU HAVE

EXTREME WEATHER SUCH AS A

TORNADO, THEN YOU WOULD

HAVE BIG TROUBLE.

>> Reporter: BEFORE THE SWITCH

TO WIRELESS THE SYSTEM WASN'T

THIS VULNERABLE.

>> THE PREVIOUS PHONE SYSTEM,

COPPER ONE, THE PHONE COMPANIES

TENDED TO BE ABLE TO KEEP IT

RUNNING TWO, THREE DAYS WITHOUT

RUNNING OUT OF GENERATOR POWER.

SO THAT'S SORT OF A BASELINE

STANDARD, I THINK THAT WE SHOULD

TRY TO GET BACK TO.

THE NETWORK, I GUESS THAT I'LL

CALL IT RESILIENCE, HASN'T BEEN

REGULATED FOR SOME TIME.

SO THE LAST QUALITY OF SERVICE,

IF YOU'LL CALL IT, REGULATIONS,

WERE

RETIRED IN 2008 AND 2009.

IN THE NAME OF -- YOU KNOW, THE

OPEN MARKET AND THIS SORT OF

THING TO LOOK AFTER ITSELF.

BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE FREE

MARKET DOESN'T TEND TO SPEND

MONEY ON EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS.

>> Reporter: WITH CLIMATE

CHANGE BRINGING EVER STRONGER

STORMS AND CELLPHONE NETWORKS

REQUIRING EVER MORE ELECTRICITY,

MANY EXPERTS SAY THAT IT'S TIME

TO THINK ABOUT GETTING MORE

BACKUP POWER TO KEEP THE

NETWORKS THAT PEOPLE DEPEND ON

UP AND RUNNING.

EVAN DYER, CBC NEWS, OTTAWA.

>> Rosemary: STILL AHEAD ON

"THE NATIONAL," THIS GUY IS A

REAL SON OF A CRITCH.

WORRIED THERE, WEREN'T YOU?

IN OUR "SUNDAY INTERVIEW," MARK

CRITCH TALKS TO ME ABOUT HIS

ISOLATED CHILDHOOD, GETTING HIS

FIRST BIG LAUGH AND MAKING IT

BIG WITH PROUD SHADDY PARENTS.

>> I HEAR THAT YOU'LL BE THE NEW

RICK MERCER.

AND I'M LIKE, WHO TOLD YOU THIS?

AND SOMEONE SAID, YOUR DAD HAS

BEEN CALLING THE MEDIA.

I HAVE A SCOOP FOR YOU

(*)

(*)

>> Rosemary: TO SOME CANADIANS

NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR WAS

INVENTED FOR POSTCARDS, A

LANDSCAPE OF JAGGED COASTLINES

AND FISHING BOATS AND THE

MAGNETIC PULL OF THE OCEAN.

FOR MARK CRITCH, NEWFOUNDLAND IS

HOME.

AND WHILE HE DOESN'T SEE HIS

BELOVED PROVINCE IN QUITE THE

SAME LIGHT, HIS GROWING UP IN

1980s ST. JOHN'S DOES EXPLAIN

A FEW THINGS.

(*)

MARK CRITCH IS ONE OF THE MOST

RECOGNIZABLE FACES IN CANADIAN

COMEDY.

>> WELCOME TO THE SHOW.

>> Rosemary: BEST KNOWN AS AN

ANCHOR AND ROVING REPORTER ON

"22 MINUTES."

>> THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS,

SIR.

YOU CAN CHOKE PEOPLE AND YOU CAN

--

[laughter]

>> Rosemary: THROUGHOUT HIS

CAREER HE'S TAKEN AIM AT A LOT

OF BIG NAMES -- FROM FELLOW

NEWFOUNDLANDER ALAN DOYLE.

>> WHAT ARE YOU ASKING?

>> Rosemary: TO PRIME MINISTER

JUSTIN TRUDEAU.

EVEN THAT GUY SOUTH OF THE

BORDER.

>> IT'S NOT RAINING, DO NOT

TWEET THAT IT IS RAINING.

GOD IS NOT PEEING ON ME.

>> THERE'S A BASILICA BEHIND US

AT

THE TOP OF THE HILL.

>> Rosemary: COMING FROM A

PROVINCE KNOWN FOR STORYTELLING,

CRITCH IS TELLING HIS.

>> I DON'T SWIM AND I DON'T

SKATE AND I DON'T RIDE A BIKE.

>> Rosemary: HAS MEMOIR PAINTS

A PICTURE OF GROWING UP IN

NEWFOUNDLAND THAT IS A LITTLE

DIFFERENT THAN YOU MIGHT THINK.

>> IT IS NOT A LIGHTHOUSE AND NO

SCHOONERS AND IT'S NOT THE

NEWFOUNDLAND EXPERIENCE.

>> Rosemary: I MET UP WITH

MARK CRITCH IN ST. JOHN'S FOR A

TOUR.

THIS PLACE, WHAT IS IT CALLED

LPSU HALL?

>> THE LSPU HALL.

>> Rosemary: THE LSPU HALL.

WHAT IS THIS PLACE TO YOU?

>> THIS ORIGINALLY WAS A LONG

SHOREMAN PROTECTED UNION.

THE LONG SHOREMEN WOULD COME

HERE AND YELL AND SCREAM.

AND THE ARTSY CROWD AND THEY DID

A THEATRE HERE.

SO THIS IS WHERE I -- WHEN I WAS

15 YEARS OLD I DID MY FIRST SHOW

HERE.

I CAME DOWN HERE AND ASKED TO

RENT IT AND THEY GAVE US ON A

60/40 SPLIT AND WE DID THE SHOW.

AND AFTERWARDS WHEN THEY GAVE ME

THE 60% I THOUGHT THEY MADE A

MISTAKE AND TOOK OFF.

YES, THIS IS THE FIRST PLACE

THAT I PERFORMED ANYTHING THAT I

HAD EVER WRITTEN.

>> Rosemary: SO PART OF YOUR

CHILDHOOD IS DEFINED BY WHERE

YOU LIVED, WHICH WE'LL GO AND

CHECK OUT.

BUT SORT OF REMOTE, THE HOUSE

CAME WITH YOUR DAD'S JOB AS A

REPORTER?

>> YEAH.

DAD WAS BASICALLY A LIGHTHOUSE

KEEPER BUT HIS LIGHTHOUSE WAS A

RADIO STATION.

AND DAD WAS A JOURNALIST.

SO HE WAS THE LAST LIVING PERSON

TO COVER CONFEDERATION WITH

CANADA.

AND THEN WHEN HE WAS WITH THE

NEWSPAPER.

AND THEN HE WENT INTO RADIO.

AND HE WAS VERY WELL KNOWN

AROUND HERE FOR CRIME REPORTS

BECAUSE HE HAD A VERY ST. JOHN

TOWNIE ACCENT.

MIKE CRITCH... IT WAS THE WAY

THAT HE SPOKE.

AND EVERYBODY KNEW, EVERYBODY

COULD DO AN IMPRESSION OF DAD.

BUT HE -- WE LIVED RIGHT NEXT

DOOR TO THE STATION WHICH WAS ON

BASICALLY THE TRANS-CANADA

HIGHWAY BECAUSE IT WAS -- THEY

NEEDED A HIGH POINT FOR THE

TRANSMITTER.

>> SO SOMETIMES THE BIG BLACK

CAR WOULD PULL UP HERE AND JOEY

SMALLWOOD WOULD JUST PUT DOWN

THE WINDOW OF THE CAR AND KIND

OF LEAN OUT AND YOU'D LOOK UP,

THERE'S THE PREMIER.

HOW ARE THINGS TODAY?

THINGS ARE WONDERFUL, AND THINGS

ARE FINE, THINGS ARE

INCREDIBLE -- JOBS, JOBS, JOBS

AND

THEN THE CAR WOULD PEEL AWAY.

HE WOULDN'T EVEN GET OUT OF THE

CAR SO THAT WAS VERY EXCITING

FOR ME.

>> Rosemary: YOUR MOM TOO WAS

A STORYTELLER AND A GOSSIP IT

SOUNDED LIKE?

SHE KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING

EVERYWHERE.

>> MOM -- MOM WAS PERPETUALLY

TALKING, LIKE CONSTANTLY.

>> Rosemary: ONE OF THE BEST

STORIES AND I DIDN'T KNOW THAT

YOU WERE ASTHMATIC -- EPILEPTIC.

SO ONE OF THE BEST STORIES IS

WHEN THE POPE COMES TO TOWN AND

SHE GETS IN HER HEAD THAT HE CAN

CURE YOU.

>> WELL, IT'S NOT NECESSARILY A

CURE, BUT IT'S YOUR THAT SON HAS

WHAT THE BIBLICAL WRITERS WOULD

SAY IS DEMONS.

AND THE PONTIFF HAPPENS TO BE IN

TOWN.

HE'S DOES A DRIVE-BY.

THERE'S A CHANCE, RIGHT?

>> STEPPING ON NEWFOUNDLAND

SOIL...

>> AND THE POPE HAD NEVER BEEN

HERE BEFORE.

AND SO, YEAH, SO THEY BROUGHT ME

DOWNTOWN.

AND WE WERE OUT AND THERE WAS A

HORRIBLE STORM AND WE HAD TO

WAIT FOR THE POPE TO GO BY.

AND THAT WAS IT.

AND IT'S LIKE YOU FEEL BETTER?

I GUESS.

AND, YEAH, AND THEN WE WERE

TRYING TO GET OUT OF THERE AND

THE TRAFFIC WAS SO BAD SO SHE

KEPT DRIVING.

THEN THE CANADIAN ARMY TRIED TO

SAY YOU CAN'T AND DOWN HERE.

AND MOM SAID, JUST PRETEND THAT

YOU'RE HAVING AN ASTHMA ATTACK.

I HAVE TO GET MY SON TO THE

HOSPITAL, WING HER THROUGH, AND

WE HAD A MOTORCADE OF POLICE AND

I'M FAKE WHEEZING IN THE BACK.

AND ACTUALLY TO START TO

ACTUALLY WHEEZE.

IT WAS THAT KIND OF THING.

>> Rosemary: I UNDERSTOOD YOUR

MOM WHEN YOU TOLD THAT STORY.

>> SCREW THIS, WE'RE GOING

THROUGH.

THAT KIND OF THING.

AND THAT WAS VERY HELPFUL TO ME,

THAT KIND OF THING, BECAUSE

LATER

ON PEOPLE WOULD SAY, NO, THE

PRIME MINISTER WON'T DO AN

INTERVIEW, OR, NO,

YOU CAN'T GO IN THERE BECAUSE SO

AND SO IS IN THERE.

YOU KNOW, I'LL FAKE AN ASTHMA

ATTACK AND GO THROUGH.

THERE'S ALWAYS A WAY, RIGHT,

THERE'S ALWAYS A WAY.

>> Rosemary: YEAH.

I WONDERED BEING IN THAT HOUSE

SORT OF

ISOLATED, I WONDER WHETHER THAT

HELPED YOU TO BECOME THE PERSON

THAT YOU ARE IN SOME WAY WITH

YOUR IMAGINATION OR WITH YOUR --

>> YEAH, I GUESS THAT THERE'S --

THERE'S ONLY TWO WAYS TO GO I

WOULD GUESS.

IT WOULD BE LIKE SOME FORM OF

ENTERTAINER OR SERIAL KILLER.

I THINK THAT THERE'S TWO, YOU

KNOW, KIND OF CAREER PATHS AT

THAT POINT.

>> RIGHT HERE WAS WHERE I DID

EVERYTHING.

SO, LIKE, I WOULD BE -- MY

BEDROOM WAS RIGHT HERE AND THE

TV WAS RIGHT HERE.

SO I WOULD SIT HERE AND JUST

WATCH WAYNE AND SCHUSTER FOR

HOURS.

>> Rosemary: IT'S NOT A VERY

BIG HOUSE.

>> IT WAS ABOUT THE SAME SIZE AS

THE HOUSE ACROSS THE STREET.

IT WAS JUST A TINY HOUSE BY

TODAY'S STANDARDS, YOU KNOW.

YOU VERY MUCH WERE LEFT TO YOUR

OWN DEVICES AND YOU HAD TO COME

UP WITH SOMETHING.

SO, YEAH, THE STORIES AND THE

CHARACTERS AND LITTLE PLAYS AND

ACTION FIGURES, WHAT HAVE YOU.

AND THAT WAS, YOU KNOW, YOUR

WHOLE WORLD IS KIND OF IN YOUR

HEAD.

>> Rosemary: WHICH BECAME SORT

OF THE CHALLENGE THEN WHEN YOU

GOT SENT OFF TO SCHOOL MUCH TO

YOUR HORROR?

>> YEAH.

>> Rosemary: YOU THOUGHT THEY

WERE JOKING?

>> I THOUGHT THIS IS NOT

SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS TO A

GENTLEMAN.

I HAVE A FINE LIFE HERE.

YES.

I KNEW MY BROTHER

GOT ON THE SCHOOL BUS BUT HE WAS

MUCH OLDER.

AND NOT AS OUTGOING AS I WAS.

SURELY TO GOD.

BUT, NO, I HAD NO IDEA.

AND IT

WASN'T A BIG THING ABOUT IT

EITHER.

BECAUSE I REMEMBER THAT WHEN I

GREW UP THERE WAS NO KIDS AROUND

AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY MOM IS

LIKE YOU NEED A BOOKBAG.

AND I WONDER WHAT THAT IS FOR.

AND THEN THE BUS COMES, THERE

YOU GO.

SHOULD WE NOT HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT

THIS MORE?

AND I GET ON THE BUS AND I HAD

NEVER SEEN THAT MANY KIDS.

THERE'S LIKE 30 KIDS ON THE BUS

OR SOMETHING.

AND I'M LIKE HI.

WHAT THE HELL DO I DO NOW?

THEN WE GET TO THE PARKING LOT

AND THEN

THERE'S OTHER BUSES AND I'M LIKE

SURELY TO GOD THEY DON'T HAVE

CHILDREN.

THEY DO.

AND THEN THERE WERE MORE KIDS

INSIDE THE BUILDING AND I

THOUGHT WHEN DOES THIS STOP?

WHEN DOES THIS STOP!

SO, YEAH, I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO

INTERACT WITH MORE THAN ONE

CHILD AT A TIME OR SOMETHING.

>> Rosemary: AND YOU STARTED

TO -- I THINK THAT IT'S THE

FIRST TIME THAT YOU GOT A LAUGH

WHEN YOU HAD TO DO AN

INTRODUCTION OF A PLAY.

>> MY FIRST LAUGH, I WAS

PLAYING THE COLOUR YELLOW IN THE

BIG SHOW AT THE SCHOOL CONCERT.

AND THE ARCHBISHOP WAS THERE AND

EVERYTHING AND IT WAS A VERY BIG

DEAL.

AND I WAS SAYING ARCHBISHOP,

BISHOP, FATHERS, BROTHERS,

SISTERS, PARENTS, FRIENDS AND

PUPILS.

BUT I HAD NEVER SEEN THAT WORD

SO I WOULD SAY POOP-HILLS AND

THEY'D LAUGH.

POOL-HILLS, THEY'D LAUGH.

AND I AM LIKE POOP-HILLS AND

THEY LAUGHED.

POOO-HILLS AND I'M JUST KIND OF

GOING AND THEY HAVE THE BISHOP

GOING HA, HA, HA AND I'M LIKE,

HE GETS IT, HE GETS IT, HE LOVES

ME!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

PUT ME BACK!

SO THAT WAS THE FIRST KIND OF,

OH, I SEE.

>> Rosemary: THEN IT BECAME

PLAYS AND THE COMEDY TROUPE.

>> COMEDY STUFF AND ALL OF THAT

STUFF, YEAH.

>> Rosemary: SO WHAT DID THEY

MAKE OF IT THEN WHEN THEY'D SEE

YOU TEASING THE PRIME MINISTER,

RUNNING AFTER MINISTERS.

BECAUSE THAT'S DIFFERENT

THAN BEING ON THE STAGE WHICH,

YOU KNOW, WHICH IS IMPRESSIVE IN

ITSELF.

BUT TO MAKE A JOB OUT OF MOCKING

PEOPLE IN POSITIONS OF

AUTHORITY, I MEAN, IT'S PRETTY

--

>> WELL, I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS

ABOUT TO GET THE JOB.

WHEN MERCER LEFT AND THEN THEY

BROUGHT UP MYSELF AND THE

MAJUMDER TO TORONTO FOR

AUDITIONS.

AND SO THERE WAS ALL OF THIS

TALK OF US PAIN DOING IT.

AND THEN BACK HOME LOCALLY THAT

GOT AROUND.

SO I'M LIKE HOW DID THAT GET

AROUND BECAUSE I DIDN'T TELL

ANYBODY.

AND AFTERWARDS WHEN THEY SAID

THEY WANT YOU TO BE A WRITER AND

MEDIA PEOPLE ARE GOING, I HEAR

THAT

YOU'LL BE THE NEW RICK MERCER

AND ALL OF THIS STUFF.

AND I'M LIKE, WHAT, WHO TOLD YOU

THIS?

AND SOMEONE SAID THAT YOUR DAD

HAS BEEN CALLING THE MEDIA AND

TELLING THEM, I'VE GOT A SCOOP

FOR YOU,

BOB.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW THE KID.

I'VE GOT THE CONTRACT HERE.

LIKE, HE WAS VERY PROUD, THAT

KIND OF THING.

BUT SOMETIMES YOU WOULD SAY

SOMETHING OR SOMETHING WOULD

HAPPEN AND HE'D BE LIKE DID YOU

HAVE TO DO THAT, YOU KNOW?

DID YOU HAVE TO GO THAT FAR.

>> Rosemary: WAS THERE

SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER

THAT YOU THOUGHT THAT YOU DID A

DISSERVICE --

>> WHEN -- WHEN CAROLYN PARRISH

GOT KIND OF PUSHED OUT OF

GOVERNMENT BECAUSE A GUY WAS

STEPPING ON A GEORGE BUSH DOLL

DURING THE WAR.

>> HI, I'M MARK CRITCH.

THIS WEEK ON "223 MINUTES"

WE'LL TALK TO CAROLYN PARRISH

ABOUT THIS GUY, GEORGE W. BUSH.

CAROLYN?

AND IT WAS LIKE YOU HAVE RUINED

THIS WOMAN'S LIFE.

WHICH SHE STEPPED ON IT.

I DIDN'T MEAN IT.

BECAUSE THAT WAS LIKE A BIG

THING.

BECAUSE AT THE TIME I REMEMBER

GETTING OFF THE PLANE FROM THERE

AND THE TV BEING ON BACK AT WORK

AND PEOPLE ARE LIKE, WHAT DID

YOU DO.

AND I TURNED AND DON NEWMAN WAS

THERE, AND AT THE 20 SECOND MARK

SHE STEPS ON THE HEAD OF GEORGE

BUSH.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT THIS

MEANS?

PANEL?

THEY HAVE A PANEL?

OH, NO!

SO I WAS LIKE, OH, GEEZ, YOU SEE

THE RAMIFICATIONS OF SOMETHING

THAT YOU DO.

BUT FOR THEM THEY THOUGHT IT WAS

A BIT MUCH.

THAT WAS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF

THE PAPER, THE "GLOBE & MAIL" OF

A PICTURE OF HER.

>> Rosemary: DID YOU THINK

THAT IT WAS TOO MUCH?

>> NO.

BUT I CALLED HER AFTERWARDS,

RIGHT, AND APOLOGIZED TO HER.

AND I'M LIKE I'M SO SORRY THIS

HAPPENS.

WE HAD A NICE TALK AND SHE SAID,

YOU KNOW WHAT, SCREW IT, IT'S

ALL

FINE AND EVERYTHING.

SHE WAS VERY NICE ABOUT IT.

>> Rosemary: I ASKED MERCER

THIS QUESTION WHEN HE WAS

WRAPPING UP THE SHOW AND IT IS

STILL SOMETHING THAT I'M NOT

SURE THAT I GET, NO MATTER HOW

MANY BOOKS I READ OR PEOPLE I

MEET.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS PLACE THAT

CREATES PEOPLE LIKE YOU, LIKE

MERCER, LIKE ALAN DOYLE, LIKE

ALL OF THESE PEOPLE WITH THESE

AMAZING STORYTELLING ABILITIES

AND COMEDIC TALENTS?

THERE'S SOMETHING HERE.

WOULD YOU AGREE THAT IT MAKES

PEOPLE DIFFERENT?

>> I THINK THAT IT'S THE SAME

THING THAT GOT ME GOING AND

LIVING IN THIS WEIRD HOUSE NEXT

TO A RADIO STATION.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE ISOLATION.

THERE'S SOMETHING IN

NEWFOUNDLANDERS AND LABRADORIANS

THAT ARE COMING TOGETHER IN A

SMALL PLACE THAT YOU DEPEND ON

EACH OTHER, IT'S A COMMUNITY.

YOU KNOW THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU.

YOU KNOW WHAT IS WRONG.

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, YOU FIX

IT, THAT KIND OF A THING.

BUT THE STORYTELLING THING IS

LIKE BECAUSE OF THE ISOLATION

OVER THE YEARS IN THESE SMALL

COMMUNITIES YOU HAD TO ENTERTAIN

EACH OTHER AS WELL.

SO IF YOU DIDN'T PLAY AN

ACCORDION OR SING A SONGS OR

STEP DANCE OR SOMETHING, THE

ONLY THING THAT YOU WERE ALLOWED

TO DO WAS TALK.

SO YOU GOT TO BE GOOD AT

TALKING.

AND NEWFOUNDLANDERS ARE GOOD AT

TALKING.

IF YOU WANT TO GET IN FRONT OF A

NEWFOUNDLANDERS AND HAVE THEM

PAY YOU $10 TO TALK, YOU BETTER

TALK.

BECAUSE EVERYBODY THERE CAN TALK

BETTER THAN YOU.

I THINK THAT, YOU KNOW, THAT

SMALL PLACE AND ENTERTAINING

EACH OTHER IS WHERE A LOT OF

THAT COMES FROM.

>> Adrienne: I KNOW THAT YOU

LOVED THAT, ROSIE.

YOU KNOW, JUDGING FROM THE

EMAILS WHEN YOU WERE ON THAT

SHOOT I THOUGHT THAT WE'D NEED

AN EXTRACTION FORCE TO GET YOU

OFF THE ROCK.

I KNOW THAT YOU TWO COULD HAVE

TALKED FOR HOURS AND HOURS.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU LEFT

ON THE FLOOR?

>> Rosemary: WELL, FIRST OF

ALL, I ATE COD AT EVERY MEAL,

LIKE EVEN AT BREAKFAST.

I DON'T THINK I HAD A VEGETABLE

THAT WASN'T A POTATO.

BUT OTHER THAN THAT, YOU KNOW,

NEWFOUNDLAND PEOPLE -- EVERYONE

SHOULD TRY TO GET THERE.

I'M SURE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN

THERE.

BUT IT'S A SPECIAL, SPECIAL PART

OF THIS COUNTRY.

AND THE PEOPLE THERE ARE SO WARM

AND SO GENEROUS, EVERYONE THAT

WE MET, BRINGING THEM INTO THEIR

HOMES AND TELLING US WHERE TO

EAT AND DRINK AND OTHER THINGS.

SO A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL.

>> Adrienne: ALL IN THE NAME

OF RESEARCH.

>> Rosemary: THAT'S RIGHT.

>> Adrienne: AHEAD ON "THE

NATIONAL," OUR MOMENT OF

A PROVOCATIVE POLITICAL CARTOON

BY

A CANADIAN ARTIST DRAWS

CONTROVERSY AROUND THE WORLD.

PUBLISHED IN HALIFAX'S

"CHRONICLE HERALD" IT'S BEING

SHARED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE

BORDER AND IT'S SPARKING MIXED

REACTION.

BUT THE ARTIST SAYS THAT IT'S

MEANT TO PROVOKE.

>> IT PUTS YOU VERY, VERY MUCH

IN THE MIDDLE OF IT AND THAT'S

KIND OF SHOCKING.

BUT, YOU KNOW, IT REALLY WAS

WHAT SHE DESCRIBED THE DAY

BEFORE.

AND SO I THINK THAT IT FORCED

PEOPLE TO ALMOST FEEL WHAT SHE

FELT.

>> Reporter: WHAT CAN YOU TELL

US ABOUT THE DEAL?

>> WE'LL HAVE IT TOMORROW.

>> Reporter: IT WILL BE

TOMORROW YOU SAID?

>> Rosemary: THIS IS OTTAWA

WHERE THE CABINET MINISTERS WERE

ARRIVING NOT LONG AGO TO THE

PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE BUILDING

FOR AN EMERGENCY CABINET

MEETING.

OF COURSE, THE BIG NEWS IS THAT

A DEAL HAS BEEN REACHED ON

NAFTA.

WE HAVE LEARNED ALREADY A LITTLE

BIT MORE ABOUT THE FINE PRINT OF

THAT DEAL.

KATIE SIMPSON, OF COURSE, HAS

DETAILS FOR US TONIGHT.

KATIE?

>> Reporter: ROSIE, THE

PRELIMINARY DETAILS THAT WE KNOW

ABOUT ONE THING THAT WILL BE

CONSIDERED A BIG WIN FOR THE

CANADIAN DELEGATION, THE NAFTA

TEAM, IS THAT CHAPTER 19, THE

INDEPENDENT DISPUTE RESOLUTION

SYSTEM, CBC NEWS HAS LEARNED

THAT IT WILL REMAIN INTACT,

WORD-FOR-WORD.

THAT IS SOMETHING THAT CANADA

HAD SAID WAS A RED LINE.

WE KNOW THAT THE AMERICANS

WANTED TO GET RID OF THE

INDEPENDENT RESOLUTION DISPUTE

SYSTEM.

AND IT WAS A PERSONAL PET PEEVE

OF THE LEAD AMERICAN HANDLING

THE NEGOTIATIONS.

U.S. TRADE REPRESENTATIVE BOB

LIGHTHIZER.

CANADA IS CERTAINLY GOING TO BE

MAKING SOME CONCESSIONS THOUGH.

AND ONE OF THOSE IS ON DAIRY.

WHAT WE'RE TOLD AT THIS STAGE IS

THAT THE DAIRY CONCESSIONS

CANADA WILL MAKE WILL BE VERY

SIMILAR TO THOSE THAT WERE MADE

IN THE ORIGINAL TRANSPACIFIC

PARTNERSHIP, OVER 3% MORE ACCESS

THAT AMERICAN FARMERS WILL BE

ABLE TO SELL THEIR GOODS IN

CANADA.

HOWEVER, WE NEED TO SEE DETAILS

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH DAIRY.

DAIRY IS A VERY COMPLICATED

ISSUE.

SO THERE'S THAT AS WELL.

STEEL AND ALUMINUM TARIFFS WILL

NOT COME OFF CANADIAN PRODUCTS,

THAT'S ONE THING THAT CANADA

WANTED TO SECURE BUT THAT IS NOT

GOING TO HAPPEN AT THIS TIME.

THE CANADIANS HOPE THAT

CONVERSATIONS ON THAT CAN

CONTINUE AND THAT THE AMERICANS

WILL RECONSIDER.

BUT CANADA WILL BE GIVEN CERTAIN

ASSURANCES THAT DONALD TRUMP

WILL NOT PUT TARIFFS ON CARS OR

CAR PARTS WHICH IS A BIG WIN FOR

CANADA.

>>> Rosemary: OKAY, KATIE

SIMPSON WITH A LOT OF THE NEW

DETAILS AS THEY EMERGE ON THE

DEAL THAT HAS BEEN REACHED

BETWEEN CANADA AND THE UNITED

STATES AND MEXICO.

KATIE, THANK YOU FOR THAT.

WE NEED TO THINK MORE LONG TERM

SO, ERICA, WILL B.C. INTRODUCE

THESE

>> WELL, THE PROVINCE JUST

WRAPPED UP A TEST PILOT OF THESE

CARDS AT TWO CASINOS IN

SO THE MINISTER IS HOPEFUL THAT

THESE CARDS WILL COME OUT SOON

BUT THE B.C. LOTTERY CORPORATION

SAY THEY WANT TIME TO REVIEW THE

THAT, IN FACT, IT MAY DO

MORE TESTING.

AND IT WANTS TO LOOK AT OTHER

JURISDICTIONS THAT HAVE THIS

SYSTEM IN PLACE.

IN ONTARIO PRECOMMITMENT CARDS

ARE IN PLACE IN TWO CASINOS AND

ONTARIO PLANS TO ROLL OUT THOSE

CARDS VERY SOON RIGHT ACROSS THE

PROVINCE.

>> Adrienne: SO IT'S ALMOST A

MILLION CANADIANS THAT HAVE A

GAMBLING PROBLEM OF SOME KIND.

WHAT KIND OF MONEY ARE WE

TALKING ABOUT HERE?

>> Reporter: WE'RE TALKING

ABOUT BIG MONEY.

LAST YEAR CANADIANS GENERATED

OVER $17 BILLION IN GAMBLING

REVENUE.

HERE IN B.C. THAT FIGURE WAS

$3.3 BILLION.

AND THE PROVINCE GOT TO KEEP

$1.4 BILLION OF THAT MONEY.

NOW IT ONLY SPENT A TINY

FRACTION OF THAT MONEY,

$5.6 MILLION OR .4% OF ALL

REVENUES ON PROGRAMMES FOR

RESPONSIBLE AND PROBLEM

GAMBLING.

Happiness is the key for achievement and success - Dr. Walid Fitehi. With English Subtitles - Duration: 1:53.

The Air-Force pilot George Hall who was captured in Vietnam War and was placed in a dark box

for 7 years.

Every day the pilot used to imagine himself playing golf to pass time and not lose his mind

in this dark prison, and after one week only of being rescued from captivity.

He participated in an international golf competition, and he got a very advanced position.

Einstein says that the ability to imagine is way more important than knowledge.

For this reason, we find that people who can feed their minds with positive images and ideas,

achieve success and achievements that cannot be achieved by people who surrender to a negative reality

and spend most of the time thinking about negatives.

In the book "The Happiness Advantage", the author corrects the traditional belief

that humans work and strive for an accomplishment that makes them happy.

To show us the right equation is reversed, and this was confirmed by Harvard's main study of this book

and more than 200 supporting scientific studies around the world on 270,000 thousand people.

In other words, when we are happy and positive, we look for positive images around us and

we feed our minds with those images.

The brain receives it as a fact, which leads to the doubling of dopamine hormone secretion,

which performs 2 functions, first, it makes us happier, and this leads to more energy and activity.

It also makes us smarter and more capable of seeing and capturing opportunities.

NFL Office Wanted 49ers to Trade for Nick Foles? | Heavy.com

The San Francisco 49ers may be without their starting quarterback for the rest of the 2018 NFL season, but they aren't making any big moves yet.

While Jimmy Garoppolo will be sidelined with a torn ACL, the 49ers will roll with C.J.

Beathard, even though there have been various reports linking them to other quarterbacks.

After many fans called for the team to sign Colin Kaepernick, ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed on Sunday NFL Countdown that the league office was hoping the team would swing trade.

That deal would have been for Philadelphia Eagles signal-caller Nick Foles.

"The 49ers have five prime-time games left, I think there were people in the league office hoping they'd trade for Nick Foles and I think there were fans hoping they'd go after Colin Kaepernick.

They're not interested in that right now, they're more interested in getting C.J.

Beathard, their former third-round pick up to speed.

They believe if he plays they way they think he can, they can turn around and maybe even trade him for value at a certain point in time." Schefter stated.

As you can see, Schefter stated the 49ers instead believe Beathard could wind up being a potential trade piece moving forward.

It seems there's some belief within the 49ers organization that Beathard has flashed upside worth looking further into.

Potential Nick Foles Trade and Beathard Starting.

If the 49ers are unable to pick up quick wins with Beathard and the quarterback doesn't look good, there's reason to believe they'll jump at bringing in a new quarterback.

Whether or not that proves to be the Eagles signal-caller in Foles is the big question, though.

Earlier this offseason the Eagles were looking to land at least a first-round pick for Foles, which obviously didn't pan out.

The 49ers are unlikely to give up a selection that high for a player who'll be under center for the remainder of this season at most.

Hello everybody, my name is Suyash, you're watching MindBodySpirit.

Today's success story of course is extremely inspiring, but also it's very important because

it points in the direction of the kind of state of mind we should have in order to effectively

and quickly apply the law of attraction for all kinds of intentions that we may have.

So let's get started.

So today's success story has been sent to me by Shashank.

Shashank has sent it by email, and the name of today's success story is THERE IS ALWAYS

A WAY.

And Shashank writes:

Dear Suyash,

Greetings!

Myself Shashank Goswami, I am subscribed to your channel, and it is wonderful.

Thank you.

I am grateful to you that you brought a ray of hope and belief in my life.

Although I knew about the Law of Attraction for quite many years, I had lost faith in

it for some time.

But one fine day when I was searching something on Google related to writing your intentions

in a journal for making them strong to achieve, I came across your channel and I got delighted.

I started Law of Attraction practice again, and it is really working for me.

So my story is that I am a businessman, and I was facing a phase of lack of orders and

money for quite some time, almost from 5 months.

In that phase I even had borrowed money from family and friends for survival.

That is how grave the situation was.

Okay, and then he continues:

At times I had even thought of winding up the business and to start searching for a

job.

But then two months back when I was not practicing the Law of Attraction, a query came to me

regarding my products, and she enquired a few things and then there was no contact from

her.

Meanwhile I just left the things on destiny.

Also in this period of time I came across your channel, so I started practicing the

Law of Attraction again.

I used to visualise working for her order - he's talking about the lady who had enquired

about the products.

I used to visualise working for her order, and also used to visualise my associates working

for the order, as I knew about what she was going to be buying.

Well, I kept applying the law of attraction and things started to change.

She contacted me again 2 weeks back out of the blue, and finalised the order.

But still she didn't sent the amount of money to my account.

As I work against 100% advance, I was waiting for that to happen.

But several days passed and it was just not happening.

So yesterday I saw a video of yours in which you told that sometimes you have to let your

intentions go!

So I somehow understood the concept of letting go.

Now here is the twist of this story.

I have a childhood friend Pulkit with whom I used to spend a lot of time during my school

days and even after that.

He is a businessman too and we had even worked together on some of my projects.

For around 9 months we were not talking, or I should say I was not talking to him [so

they had had a fight] as he refused for a financial help I needed around that time,

which I had helped him with a few times before.

So I didn't fight with him [okay, it was not a fight] So I didn't fight with him, I had

just stopped talking to him.

Yesterday, being grateful, I thought to make peace with him, friendship is always a better

option instead of keeping bad feelings for him.

That's so true.

So I made my mind to call him up deleting all the bad that happened between us.

He took my call instantly and I greeted him the same way I used to.

I could sense the smile on his face while he was talking to me.

I just felt great, also I came to know that he had become father of a little girl 2 months

back.

So congratulations to Pulkit.

I was so happy for him, and I thanked god for his blessings over him.

After hanging up the phone, one hour later I received a text message from my bank that

the amount of that client has been credited to my account.

Excellent!

And I was so happy to see that, I just thanked God for his blessings and really felt grateful

for the support provided to me.

Now I understood the value of giving, value of saying thank you, value of being happy

all the time so that others can also be happy seeing you.

Thank you so much Suyash for redirecting me towards this Enlightenment.

Shashank.

That is such a phenomenal success story guys, and it actually points us towards something.

We may be practising all kinds of techniques and doing so many things with respect to the

law of attraction, but one thing that is extremely crucial is what is our state of mind like

when we are applying the law of attraction.

Are we in an attitude of gratitude, are we happy, are we in a state of peace and contentment?

Because if those things are there then the manifestation will be smooth and it will be

streamlined.

But if those things are not there then even if we are doing everything right sometimes

the manifestation can be stuck.

And how to you know that it was stuck?

You know, he was waiting for the lady to place the order first and then to make the payment

but it was not happening.

But then Shashank was already feeling grateful, he decided I'll talk to my old friend, and

you know talking to old friends, making peace with them if we have had a minor fight or

something - it always feels so good.

And just like Shashank if you can figure out what is going to create that happy feeling

within you then all your manifestations are going to be really fast.

If you do this, your intentions will never get stuck.

You will always see that the manifestations are smooth, and they are fast.

And before going give this video a like and let me know down below in the comments, and

let Shashank know, how you liked this success story.

And so that's all for this video.

Do share it with your friends and family members.

Absolutely a pleasure to talk to you in this video.

Catch you very soon in the next one.

Till then, bye bye.
