Lau: Real perseverance means fighting against any odds
Being in show business is hard to describe. It isn't as tough as you would imagine.
But it's not always a bed of roses either.
The Making of My Name is Fame
I play a young inspiring actress who is new to the film industry
While Sean Lau plays a jaded actor who been in this business for many years now
Lau: Two people chasing their own dreams
Each with their own style of doing things,
and through this encounter and their relationship
inspire each other
Basically love blooms between these two people in the show biz
Essentially it's about setting an example for the people after you
Not only is this a story of a young girl trying to be an actress
Making great sacrifices to realise her dream
This is also a story of a 40 year old jaded guy taking a second chance at his career
by reinventing himself
Director Lawrence:The tabloid papers are always full of stories and gossips on the HK film industry everyday
I think
My feeling is the average audience
would love to have a glimpse of what the HK film industry is really like on the inside
Why don't you share what it is you like about being an actor?
I don't know actually
I can't stand those who calls themselves an actor
but does an half decent job and calls it a day
that's not me at all
My character name in this movie is Pui Kar Fai
He's been a working actor in this business for a number of years now
He started out with a bang, winning the Best Newcomer award
Since then, he sort of drifted around without much acclaim or attention
He slowly became resentful of everything and everyone around
He was not a pleasant guy to be around anymore
Fiona: I star in 'the film' within this film
'the film' stars both me and Sean
I'm supposed be to the bigger star than Sean
So no matter how bad I do in the take,
the film crew will still love me and take my side
this situation
infuriates Sean
because I keep messing up the takes
and having to slap him repeatedly
Actually to be honest, I rather be on the receiving end of the slaps
Having to dish out slaps is a lot of pressure
Ekin: Becoming famous depends on fate
Some will have a bigger role than others
but everyone has opportunity to shine in their role
The key is to preserve and keep going
because nobody can control fame
Nevertheless during this journey
you will either succeed or you don't
Lau: Most of the time, we actors have no real life experience in playing our role
For example, I'm supposed to play the role of a pilot
At the very least, I will still need to do some homework
Being an actor is a complicated process
You have to have confidence in playing the role
So the challenge is finding that confidence within
During the filming process, what will happen is
Everyone will have their own point of view from the producer to the director to the writer
Everyone is experienced and knows their craft
So their point of view is just as credible
But what really matters is
what is the right for the character?
That should always be the focus for the movie
Is it comfortable?
yes it's so pampering
i'm getting spasms
this is the third time
Becoming famous takes
someone like me
i have all the right moves
just look at me *laughs*
Director: A girl who eager to break into movies
she knows someone like Fai can help her go far in this business
So she tries her best to latch onto him
persuade him to be her mentor
to teach her how to really act
how to get into show business
Tung: No matter newcomer or veteran
I think they all can given a good sincere effort
being gifted in acting doesn't mean you don't have to put in the effort
in fact, i hope they would seize this opportunity
treat each opportunity as their one and only chance
then I believe that lady luck will be at your side
Lau: Nobody knows how long this will take
it's hard to know what the director is thinking or looking for
what I can do is listen to the director
understand what he wants
look for a beat
that will invoke an emotion from the director
and go with my guts
that's it
Yam:today scene involves Lau teaching Ah May acting techniques
they requested for some exercise techniques
to back-up the scene
my role here is to recommend some practical techniques to them
emotional memory is invoke emotions from past memories
some requires you to mimic animal behaviour
a lot of time is spent thinking about how to portray a character
which can be difficult to imagine and project
when you approach a character from an animalistic angle
it become much easier to build your character
for example, if i imagine my role is a tiger
you instantly have a picture frame of how your character behaviour is like
how is this character like?
also when you approach your character from this angle
you are using your entire body movement not just your voice
to build up your character
when you go from tiger back to your original role
your body is much more free and confident
so much more casual and natural
Tony: Best actor means everyone wants to work with you?
Being up and down in this industry, i'm pretty jaded
Not everything is about fate
Tony: there are many "secrets" to becoming famous
not just fate
As an actor, there are many types of recognition
one of the ways is
your acting is praised or
every actor wants to be as good as you
your movies are big box-office draws
that's one way of becoming famous
it's not just about the sunglasses
Director: when you are talking about the movie industry
it involves a lot of different roles and jobs
both onscreen and off-screen
when i set out to make this film
i try to get as many of the actual guys to appear onscreen
doing what they have been trained to do and just being themselves
this gives the movie a more realistic look
of the show biz in Hong Kong
you would think appearing onscreen, doing your job and being yourself
sounds like an easy thing to do
but it actually isn't
because when facing the camera
it creates a separate person from the "real" you
you need to act as yourself but at the same time
you need to deliver your performance
that's not an easy thing to do
Nikki: I have never played a lawyer
obviously not in real life
so I need to really step up my game later
and act like a professional
Director: I have worked with Nikki on a commercial before
this is the first time we are working on a film together
Actually I'm really nervous when I'm scolding Lau
Lau: Within this film, we were filming another "film"
that was a very unique experience
when we were filming, there was a camera on-set
that camera was actually filming me
then another camera was filming me within the film from a different angle
this camera captures the other camera along with me
this camera is filming me
when the director yells Cut! I need to hear it twice
then only I can break the performance
when both cameras are actually stopped shooting
but after one night of filming,
I hear the first Cut!
I know we are still filming
Cut! ok now that's a wrap
it's hard to break the performance because you are never sure anymore
somehow I would get the feeling there is another camera still recording!
I just don't know where this 3rd camera is placed. I had that feeling the entire night
it was weird
Director: being confused between what's really filming and what's not
that was partly intentional
the idea was not to give the actors a clear understanding
which is the real camera that is rolling
make it more like a stage play
just a rough idea of what the scene is about
then let the actors play off each other
it was a fun experience
if you organise and plan everything to the tee
the outcome loses the spontaneous energy
that organic film magic that happens on-set
Lau: I'm not even sure if we are actually filming right now *laughs*
Actress: Director Lau is very focused on each camera angle and take
any slight mistake is unacceptable
for the director, there is no such thing as almost there
acting in his films is pretty intense
today we are filming with 2 cameras rolling
it looks very complicated
but looking at the footage on the monitor playback
the footage looks good
even with those camera rolling, the outcome is pretty good
kudos to the team
Lau: The director is quite meticulous
I would get the feeling that he is quietly observing
he would give you the details bit by bit
but throughout the process, he has a clear view of the big picture
he knows what he really wants in the scene
Director: Winning awards is not why I'm doing this
but I believe that it's a very powerful tool
in pushing you forward in this business
I might not think it's that important
but a lot of people puts emphasis on awards
that's a recognition of your abilities and hard work
it's like a badge of honour in some ways
so in the end, I guess I have to acknowledged it's important *laughs*
Lau: Are awards important?
Well if I don't win an award for this
does that means I can give a lesser effort?
if awards are not at stake...
imagine if academy awards and trophies don't exist
does that means everyone can just do a half decent job?
No, that's not the case I believe
I do believe awards are important
but it can't be the only reason why anyone is in this business
