You gotta love outrage fueled censorship, a few people getting something only they have
a problem with removed for everybody.
Recently, I've been noticing a disturbing trend whenever someone claims cultural appropriation
or, in rational words, cultural appreciation.
I love other cultures, they are awesome, their food tastes good, they have fun customs and
you can better relate to them the more you know of their unique perspective.
You don't put them in a box and put me in a box and tell us to stay within the lines
we were born into.
I've been told I'm a racist and culturally appropriating a couple times for eating a
taco and baked raviolis because I'm not Hispanic or Italian.
I explain, I actually am, despite the stupidity and real racism of saying ravioli is for Italians
and they should not enjoy non-Italian food and I was told I didn't look Italian or Hispanic
enough to actually have Italian or Hispanic heritage.
I was done treating them rationally after that simplification to a preschool book telling
me milk is for cats and dogs eat bones.
The trend though is that this terminally cancerous part of the left is getting outraged on the
behalf of a group, while the group at large holds the exact opposite opinion.
I like to call this social justice-splaining or just justice-splaining for short.
Let's look at a couple recent cases.
A while ago an anime called Ghost in the Shell was adapted into a movie for American audiences
and cast an American actress as the lead.
In America, social justice warriors claimed white washing en masse.
When it comes to Japan and those of Japanese descent, opinion was quite mixed some thought
it would have fit better, but wasn't really a big deal, many had no opinion at all and
many also viewed it very positively, yet the social justice train kept rolling the outrage
on behalf of the Japanese as if things were more polarized and unanimous.
Ultimately the movie was received best by the Japanese, with strong reviews and ticket
sales however.
To be fair though, adapting an anime works well with American or Japanese actors considering
the style originated from a Japanese animator who enjoyed and was heavily influenced by
Disney's duck characters, particularly Scrooge, leading to a style that blends the features
of Japanese and westerners into an ambiguous style.
So the most ideal actor might be a mixed actor and perhaps this isn't the most clear cut
example since personal bias can affect how European or Japanese you perceive characters.
So let's talk about something even more recent, Mario Odyssey.
Almost no time passed after Nintendo showed off the wearable sombrero and poncho and a
SJW on Twitter was calling cultural appropriation and racism against Mexicans.
Almost immediately her tweet was filled with replies by actual Mexicans who stated they
actually appreciated the representation and tat it made them more excited to play a game
that recognized them and allowed them to dress Mario in some of their cultural garb.
It was so one sided and conflicted with her agenda that she deleted her tweet to dam up
the flood of opposing viewpoints.
A few others also made such claims and they would also be met with disagreement from the
Latino demographic, but most of these left their articles stay and they also attracted
a Caucasian feminist demographic who tried to drown out and dilute the Mexican views
as best as possible with explanations of why Mexicans need to be outraged, but in general
this became a low priority issue for them and they backed off of that losing battle
to focus more on a coordinated fight whenever a battleground appeared.
Nevertheless, Nintendo has still decided to remove sombrero and poncho Mario from the
Americas' cover art.
Japan's is the same as always, but now there is question of if this is just a change to
the art or if the actual game has also removed the clothes.
Some suggest the former based on the fact another level and outfit is shown, but Nintendo
has a history of removing content and not just removing it from marketing, so we really
don't know yet.
What we do know is Mexicans and other Latinos are getting uneasy at the possibility they
may have lost that bit of representation they were so excited for.
There is a difference between paying respects to another's culture and exploiting or making
fun of it.
There was once a Toy Story tie-in that was going to have bandito enemies, that might
be more of a situation of cultural appropriation, Mario just isn't one.
The Mexicans have maintained a steady and positive buzz between the events that create
a spike of discussion, so they haven't been unrepresented or without voice; they have
spoken quite unanimously and been told they are wrong and the feminists will speak for,
and over, their voices.
This breed of feminists often invokes the term mansplaining to try to silence and illegitimize
a man based on him being the inferior sex, whenever he disagrees with their agenda.
They frame mansplaining as if they are being interrupted, patronized, victimized and talked
over by men and that is exactly what they are doing to minorities, or if you just look
at this as just a Mexican issue and not an international issue, majorities.
I feel for those who don't have a voice or whose voice is being silenced and I try to
gather their perspective and advocate for them.
I'm just one guy though, and thankfully the Latinos are doing pretty well at speaking
for themselves, so all I have to do is point them out and encourage them to keep speaking
and let their opinions be known to Nintendo and society when SJWs are opposing them.
That's really what we all have to do when someone who doesn't get us, like the social
justice warriors, is speaking for us.
Speak up for ourselves with respect and dignity until our voices are louder than those unecessarily
speaking for and over us.
