Diet plan - why eating chocolate cake for breakfast could be the best start to your day
Many dieticians, nutritionists and body transformation experts would probably recommend staying away from the chocolatey sweet treat. But food expert Liz Moskow said chocolate could soon reign supreme at the breakfast table.
The culinary director of advertising firm Sterling-Rice Group thinks food trends are heading towards a resurgence of chocolaty breakfasts.
Studies in the past have suggested the nutritional benefits of cocoa will see it rise to the top of the food agenda and straight into consumer's shopping baskets.
Speaking to Food Business News, Liz said: "There was a study that recently came out from Syracuse University re-touting the benefits of dark chocolate, specifically on cognitive function – abstract reasoning, memory, focus.
"The thought was eating chocolate prepares you more for your workday, so what better day part to incorporate dark chocolate into your meal than breakfast?" A second study also noted chocolate consumption helped in aiding weight loss.
Cocoa works to reduce cravings by telling receptors in the brain it is getting a sweet hit without the excess sugar and fat.
Researchers from Tel Aviv University even recommend eating chocolate cake for breakfast, because mornings are when our metabolism is most active.
Liz added: "Combining those two studies and the like-ability of having dessert for breakfast, we predict that breakfast might start seeing brunch amuse-bouche chocolate cakes or brunch and breakfast restaurants incorporating a robust dessert menu. Of course, eating chocolate cake thats high in sugar and fat would still be damaging to your health.
Both of the studies Liz referred to focused on cocoa extracts in their natural form, rather than chocolate bars.
British Dietetic Association spokesperson Alison Hornby told NHS choices chocolate can be part of a healthy diet – but shouldnt be eaten too frequently.
But eating eggs for breakfast could be the fastest route to weight loss for those looking to shed a few pounds. . .
