Waching daily Feb 16 2019

The expectations that we have in our mind, what are they?

Success through money, through property, through business, through fame and through authority. These are our benchmarks.

The more a person a rich, famous, has authority, has big business, has property the more he is successful!

Actually this is the main point, whatever image you have in your mind regarding success you will put all of your efforts for it.

You will struggle for it, spend your energy on it, you will spend your day and night for it

This is the thing that has been negated here!

Success is not through wealth, fame, power or authority but in reality the success is through Imaan(Faith), good deeds, enjoining each other with patience and truth.

Pay attention on this point, on this attitude, the mental attitude; if this gets changed it will change the personality of a human being.

Now what's your result? If success was through wealth then Qaroon was very successful

If success was through authority then Firawn and Namrood were very successful.

Success is not through this; if a person accumulates wealth equivalent to the wealth of Qaroon and in terms of authority he acquires the position as that of Firawn and Namrood

He is still unsuccessful and totally destroyed. But Hazrat Abu Zar Ghifari is successful even if he had nothing

He didn't even have a place to live.

The Prophet of Allah has said that there are some servants of Allah, if they want to go in a gathering they don't get permission.

If they want to marry someone, no one is ready to marry them.

If they want to say something, no one listens to them.

But in the sight of Allah they have such a high status that if they take a vow, Allah fulfills their vow.

Know one thing that it is very easy to believe this and appreciate this but it very difficult to change your own thought process according to it.

This is because we get affected by our surroundings, the houses that we see, the fast car that passes by

Something comes in the heart that how lucky these people are, how happy and how successful they are but we don't know that maybe this would be the biggest loss!

If real success gets into our mind; this is why the Qur'an always says these are the one who are successful

Oh Believers! Bow and prostate, worship your Lord and do good works so that you may be successful!

So success is from which things? This is the biggest lesson, if this thing settles in our heart then our life would change, day and night would change, our goals would change, value structure would change

Today that thing is looking good, tomorrow it won't look so!

Just like there is hadith of the Prophet of Allah, "What is the world to me? What am I to the world? Verily, the example of this world and myself is that of a rider who seeks shade under a tree, then he moves on and leaves it behind." Musnad Ahmed 3701

Just like we say that we belong to Allah and to him is our return

Hadith: 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler."

But when will we abide by this? Only when this ayah gets embedded in our minds.

This is the important thing that I told, why did Sahaba kept each other reminding?

Just like when you go outside and there's snow fall, the snow will get stuck into your clothes, you brush them off.

When we get attracted by our surroundings, dust gets settled on our imaan, snow surrounds it

It's important that we constantly brush them off and the best way to brush it off is to remember that success is not in these things

The glitter of this world that's attracting you, that has indulge yourself in it, on this word I am remembering the couplet of Iqbal

A disbeliever gets distinct by getting lost in life Whereas a Muslim true keeps above its brawl and strife.

You don't get lost in this world. The love of this world shouldn't overwhelm you.

That's why you should oft remember the Surah Asr

Again refresh this thought that Success is not through wealth, fame, power or authority but in reality the success is through Imaan(Faith), good deeds, enjoining each other with patience and truth.

These are the four things that are important for success!

I LET INSTAGRAM PICK MY PLANNER | THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED AFTER A WEEK! - Duration: 28:39.

Today's video is going to be a little planner social experiment I am going to

let Instagram pick a planner for me to use for the week and see if I can

practice what I preach in terms of using my functional planning philosophy is

outside of my charmed life master planner so if that sounds interesting to

you stay tuned!

hello my Charmed Ones and welcome back to my channel for another

video if this is your first time with me my name is Alexis but I'm also known as

miss trenchcoat all across the Internet I'm an online entrepreneur who designs

themselves productivity tools strategies and skills to help you manifest success

with less stress so if that sounds interesting to you I'll leave some links

down below in the description box where you can check out more of my work online

and feel free to download some of my latest free productivity tools over at

the charm shop com if you've been with me for a while you know that I have been

using a planner system of my own design since about 2014 and I pretty much stuck

to that system with very few exceptions because well it works and it's one of

the few planners out there on the market that allows you to do more than just

list out tasks and plan out your calendar but at the same time I also

have a very strong conviction that if you are executing on the essential

strategies and philosophies of planning and productivity then you could really

use any planner to get the job done so that's what I wanted to test out today

we'll see if I can practice what I preach outside of using my perfect

unicorn planner that has given me planner peace for oh so many years by

using a planner that's going to be essentially chosen for me and that's

what we need to do first because you're going to be coming along this journey

with me and what I've decided to do is let Instagram pick my planner that I'll

be using now I love watching these sorts of videos where people let instagram

pick their outfits or their makeup and I thought this

be a really cute idea to let Instagram pick my planner now I'm not going to be

letting Instagram pick my planner in terms of posting something and asking

you guys what I should use or you know giving you guys some options and then

you guys vote instead I follow a lot of planner brands and I happen to get a lot

of different ads and things on Instagram for different sorts of planners so my

idea is I'm gonna go ahead and open up Instagram here with you and I'm going to

share my screen so you guys can see what I'm seeing

and the first planner that I see that I'm able to order is going to be the

planner that I am going to test out for a week to see if I can keep my a level

of productivity the same by using my functional planning philosophies in a

planner that is not my charmed life master planner so this is both exciting

and nerve-wracking because I have absolutely like no control over this so

let's go ahead I'm going to record my screen and open up Instagram and of

course if you're not following me on Instagram make sure to do so at miss

trenchcoat so you can follow along on the behind the scenes of my productivity

life and business okay some days I amaze myself other days I'm

looking for my phone while I'm talking on it that's pretty much me okay let's

see I'm not sure how long this is gonna take or when we're gonna see something

oh okay is that a notebook or let me go ahead

and zoom in okay so this here says rifle Paper Co 2019

agenda so I think we actually may have figured this out so let's see where this

is from it's showing it looks like an Instagram

store or something like that is tagged but I think I can just go in and

actually just find rifle Paper Company on my phone right now on Instagram okay

and I wonder it's probably not going to be on their feed right now because it's

like the end of January as I'm filming this but yeah I don't think it's going

to be here I see some other things but not the exact one so let

just go ahead and click on their shop and see if I can find it okay just some

planners planners okay let's see looks like we've got something here okay this

is not them it's not a spiral okay hardcover agendas here we go okay

2019 Navy 12-month agenda okay its Navy not black I thought it was black and

gold but it's navy and gold okay let's take a look at some of these pictures

okay pretty simple elegant design looks like they've got a calendar here a blank

calendar for 2019 then we've got monthly is and then the

week on two pages looks like it is horizontal but it's got check boxes and

sorry I'm not looking at you guys I'm like on my phone here trying to see this

and then it's got a little pocket okay so I think I can definitely make this

work and it's only $15 so we'll go ahead and add this to my bag and I will check

out and then through the magic of the Internet the next time you see me we

will be unboxing the planner together okay so here's the package of course

I've lured out my address information so maybe it's better if we open this from

the back just in case got my scissors here I hope I don't cut anything so I'm

gonna try to go on the edge here this shipped and got to me super quick to

this actually arrived a few days ago but I haven't had a chance to film yet so

really great shipping from rifle Paper Company oh good okay looks like that was

the way to open it let's turn this perhaps right side oh okay I see I see I

see okay so there is the planner for some reason I don't know if I actually

like pay attention to the size I thought it would be bigger

but it is very compact let me compare it really quickly to the master planner

okay so it's smaller than the master planner this is more like maybe what a

moleskin is and this is half letter so it is much more petite but as we know

because we've already kind of gone through the pictures a little bit

earlier there's a lot more in here and then there is in there but I still

appreciate that it's as compact as possible let's see what else we've got

here so we've got some pretty rifle paper company stickers you're as funny I

have had some rifle Paper Company things in the past like notebooks and stuff

that I've purchased like maybe it Target or Barnes and Noble or something they

think this might be my first purchase directly from them okay cute they do a

lot of beautiful like florals and then just leave this over here for you guys

to look at and then I would assume this was my receipt which it is this is like

my receipt or you know this is actually the return label I guess if I wanted to

return it it looks like obviously we're gonna use it for the purposes of this

video and I actually I really like this it's cute little pocket that's really

cute I wonder if I could repurpose that well okay let's get into the actual

planner I feels really nice it has like a is this like a cloth exterior and it

is gold foiled very pretty not necessarily my number one color combo I

think I mentioned when we were filming me finding this that I thought it was

gonna be black I do like navy blue and gold not my number one choice but then

again this was none of this was my choice right yeah let's go ahead and

just break into this again lovely rifle Paper Company florals very

nice I guess this agenda belongs to down here monthly and weekly

two years of calendar which is awesome and I like that these they are tabbed

out which is really great I love tabs and they're also laminated which is nice

okay so now it says celebrations so I'd assume this is that perpetual calendar

area okay so it starts with 2019 holidays excellent

and then that perpetual calendar starts I love things like this because I think

it's really great for planning ahead of time and if you guys know my master

planner I do have in the 2019 dated version a yearly tracker and a yearly

overview so I'm thinking that I'll probably end up using this section

similar to how I use those trackers and overviews in my planner which is great

it's nice that there's like some one to one that I can kind of do okay then it

has a note section this is good okay I didn't realize there was media notes

section so that's good let's see how many pages is this because I do think

okay it's like four spreads of notes now you know with different sorts of bound

planners there it is common to find some new pages it's never a extraordinary

section but I will put this to use because I will need some supplemental

information I'm sure in this planner to make it work for me so I will show you

guys how I do that then we get to the monthly I love this layout it's so

beautiful and simple just like very elegant but yeah month on two pages not

the biggest boxes but I can make this work because I you know I'm very good at

kind of short handing things in my monthly and I do love that there is a

note section because I will be able to it looks like probably line these

sections up one for one and do my little trick where I apply my tasks to my week

that way so that'll be helpful and we've got a month behind it a month forward

and is this all of the month oh it is okay so these are all the months in a

row that was not what I was expecting I was expecting them to be the way I can I

could call it a continuous Planner we need the month on two pages

than the weekly but they're all in one section okay so anything at the end nope

and then we get into January so and then these months are all tapped out so I'm

assuming then that these are just the weekly as yeah yeah I actually you know

I am NOT the biggest fan of horizontal but I really do like this idea of having

the check boxes right because my planner is like the vertical list this is what I

would consider a horizontal list so I think that I can definitely make this

work because these sections are probably just a teeny bit even bigger than what

my to-do lists are in my planner which is great so I'll be able to do my top

three in here I'll be able to list out things I'll probably think of a little

system so that maybe the left-hand side is my to do is starting with my top

three and then maybe the things on the right or additional sorts of information

in order to get all the functionality that I'm used to but I think that I can

definitely use this at least for planning right of my weeks which is

great and then just goes through the months and what's at the end after

December what do we have contacts okay so I'm not someone who needs a contacts

sheet and my planner necessarily but I'm hoping I can give this a little thought

and set this up to be maybe something a little different

I'll have to give it some thought because all this really is is aligned

section with some icons so I may be able to you know finagle this a little bit

and then at the back I like that it has a little pocket that's very convenient

and that is the planner it also had to page markers which I do appreciate

probably you know one for monthly one for weekly so this is really cute okay

so now after seeing this I think it is a very cute very compact a little planner

I definitely am going to be able to make use out of this for the next week but

right now what I need to do is go ahead and just take a little break

so we can think about how I want to set this up and

I will probably let you guys watch as I set this up before I get into using it

for the week ahead okay so I've just gone through and what

I did was brainstormed how I wanted to use this planner for the week ahead and

what I did was I used these little paper sticky notes and I kind of marked things

off so what we're gonna do now is actually go ahead and set this up in

accordance with those sticky notes that I have outlined so the first section

that I have here is this important date sections like I said in my master

planner this is kind of like my yearly overview or my yearly tracker and that

section of my master planner is where I like to kind of outline my content in

terms of my video ideas and I also decided that since we have two columns

here I was gonna turn it into videos and projects now obviously this planner is

not going to have a place or for my project planning sheets obviously or

like a place where I can really list out projects so I'm going to have to use my

master planner for that the sections for that but what I do want to have are a

list of my projects for the month listed out just so I can keep a eye on the big

picture projects that I need to be working on for February and for this

week ahead so I'm actually gonna keep my master planner open over here on the

side so that I can reference some information I haven't fully planned

February yet so I'm kind of doing a rough draft I guess a February in this

planner all right now

okay so this is all of the projects things that are you know more outlined

in my planner that I can put here just so I have them listed out and then once

I realized you know once I figure out what I'm doing with the rest of these

videos I'll be able to fill in that information so this page I'm gonna go

ahead and say is done because me about the videos and the projects listed out

next let's move over to notes okay so something that's pretty major that I

need to have in my planner at all times and I don't want to have to be

referencing something else for this is my meal plan so this is legitimately one

of the ways that I use my notes section of my master planner because I can't you

know put new inserts in for meal planning so I just kind of make my own

meal plan inserts here in my notes section so this side is going to be my

meal list and then this side is my meal plan

you

now on this other side the meal plan generally what I do for this is I will

actually just use like a sticky note and I will map out my meals for the week so

it's actually not the time for me to map out my meals but I will leave this in

here and I can do something like this like Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday

Friday Saturday Sunday and I could do

that right so I can create my own little sort of template for filling in my meals

and I'll go ahead and fill in some important dates in here

you

okay now I'm going to jump over to the February monthly here and one of the

things I absolutely need is a master monthly tasks list so I decided is that

here on this divider I'm actually going to create that for myself okay so going

to the week so what I've done here is like I mentioned earlier I think what

I'm gonna do there are five no six yes there are six

little to do is for every day in each column so there's twelve total I think

in terms of individual tasks that would be enough for me for the day because I

focus on my top three and then I only add a few extra things in that doesn't

mean that I only do six things in my day but I don't write down things that I

naturally would do as part of my routine I only write down things that I need to

remember to do so I want to go ahead and sort of outline some other information

on that second half that I would normally be putting in the bottom open

boxes of my master planner so this will be my top five here so once I have my

top five for the week I can put it there this will be my habits

and you guys should recognize these habits from that five habits I'm

swapping for 2019 video and what I'm just gonna do here and this is something

that I sometimes do in my planner to create my own impromptu tracker is we're

just gonna do seven boxes and I realize I could have legitimately just taken one

of my stickers and put it in here what am i habit tracking stickers but I

wanted this to be you know more interactive for you guys so that you

could kind of see like what I would be doing and what I might write in by hand

because I don't think it's always the best of rely on stickers all the time in

order to like change a layout I know that I could totally take all my

stickers and totally change the way this looks but the point of this I think is

to really use the spread that I have here and just use it the way that I

normally would this is six here so what i'm gonna do here and actually good i

have room for another one because i'm going to put my gratitude something that

i also do in my planner is i like to track my gratitude so i put like one

thing for every day and i'll go ahead and put another one down here and i'll

just have an extra line for sunday since there's not enough room but that totally

works and then i like to track self-care so what i like to do for this is i just

list out different types of self-care activities and as i go through the week

i will use them and check off

okay now I'm going to go ahead and leave the second column on Friday open because

normally I wouldn't go ahead and fill all of the boxes in my planner anyway I

would leave a few open in order to like map out things that might pop up during

the week that I want to keep track of so I want to have that area there just in

case I want to write out another project or something and all of the steps etc so

that's what I'm going to do with that and then I didn't realize this initially

but Saturday and Sunday are each given just their own line which is fine in

terms of like - dues I know that I don't normally do a lot of different things

okay so I just went in and filled in the top three and you know what you guys I

realized as I was reading this in that I this is how my week would look right

laid out which is pretty good I'm feeling really good about the way this

is set up only thing is this is the wrong week this is the week that I'm

already in not next week so I'm gonna have to redo this on the next page so

I'll go ahead and do that but that is how I would have this set up for myself

so one thing I do what I mention is I can't think of a way right now to use

these contact sections so if something happens during this week and I do use it

I'll show you on the follow up you know that it's coming next how I may or may

not use that section but I just I couldn't think of anything right now so

yeah I'm gonna go ahead and fill out the proper week with this which was good

though I got like you know one test and right before I actually filled in my

current week which is great so yeah I'll go ahead and do that and then next time

you guys see me I'll be checking in with you on how this spread is working out

for me okay so it is now Sunday and I wanted to

give you my thoughts after a week of using this planner that as you know

Instagram picked for me now I did have every intention of checking in with you

guys midweek to kind of show you how things

were working out in here but if you can hear from my voice I'm a little bit

nasally right now because on Tuesday I got sick at Tuesday night so Wednesday

and Thursday were really like the worst days for me in terms of not feeling very

good and of course because of that it also impacted my productivity so Tuesday

and Wednesday were kind of like I got some things done but they weren't like

highly productive days but I did start feeling better on Friday and yesterday

Saturday as well I you know was starting to feel that I just sound a little bit

congested and I was able to kind of make up for my work on those like sort of

missed work days so that's why I'm just gonna update you nail with everything

for the full week and to be really honest here I'm gonna go ahead and

actually first and show you kind of what the week looks like I'm just gonna hold

it up for you guys and you can see like I've been filling in everything I think

this is enough space for me you can see though I do have an extra sticky note

here which had some additional information for like subtasks that I

needed to do for the slide show that I was doing one of these things says you

know slides here that I was working on and I wanted to focus on a few different

slides so I kind of made a little sticky note and put it in here to like kind of

track my progress with those which is something that I like to do you know I

may say that I want to work on something like a slide show and obviously that's

kind of a little bit more like a project and I've know I've talked about this in

other video is how it's really important to kind of break things down a little

bit more but for me generally I know I'm able to handle it but I wanted to

because it wasn't feeling very well like really get focused on the slides that

needed to be filled out and so I worked on that and I kind of just chucked him

off of this list so I don't not someone who has a problem with using sticky

notes or anything - like supplement information now if there was like lots

of stick you know it's in here that would have been a problem but actually I

find that this was enough space for me and actually I think I had a great time

with this little planner if we go over to the monthly and didn't do very much

there except for cross off my top 5 I didn't get all five of my top 5 done

there was one thing that actually deferring so this is something

that can happen as we all know when we have our weeks and we're doing our work

it's possible that we start something and it's not going to get completed

because things change right so this week I feel like I did a lot of time thinking

and sleeping in the middle of the week and I just came to some conclusions

about things that I wanted to change in the way that I was working on a project

so one of the things didn't get done but that's fine and I'm totally okay with it

I chose not to do it right so but the rest of the week I would say did very

well so you know I think that you know this is number one I would like to say I

think this is a really cute little planner right I think this is a great

little planner if you guys are interested I'll leave the link to it

down below but more so than the planner itself the point that I want to a drive

home with this video is that you know you can implement functional planning

techniques into whatever system you're using like I think I already mentioned

this earlier but if I didn't I'm gonna mention it again that I did need to

supplement this with project planning right so I did end up going back to my

master planner just for my project planning and that's okay because I

expected that and I knew that you know from the get-go but there are ways that

you can you know use functional planning even in a planner that is not as

quote-unquote functional as my master planner system so overall I would say

that this experiment was their success right I have things that I need to do

today but even though I got sick midweek I actually ended up having a very

productive week I think and at the end of the day that's all your planner needs

to do it needs to help you you know be as productive as you want to be it needs

to help you stay on task and be clear on your goals and this planner did very

fine with that now as I'm filming this video today on

Sunday the 10 a video did just go live on my channel that is all about five

planner hacks that you can use to make any plan or more functional and you

would have seen in the setup of this planner a video that I did use a few of

those little hacks and tricks when I set this guy up so if you haven't seen that

video yet that will definitely leave it linked down below I highly recommend it

because if you are someone who is not using a

bleep functional planning system like my master planner then that video is

definitely going to give you some tricks to help you make any sort of planner

system more functional for you now of course if you do want to give my master

planner system a try I will go ahead and leave some links down below to a few

different options for purchasing this planner as well as to some master

classes that I would recommend to help you get started on the topics of

productivity and planning if you're someone who is just trying to nail the

basics of getting started with a planner and being as productive as possible I do

have a few on demand classes that I would highly recommend you check out if

you haven't already and I will leave those linked down below as well so now I

want to open the floor for a little discussion with you I would love to hear

how you enjoyed today's video and if you enjoyed this little planner experiment

of mine please feel free to leave me a comment down below in the comment

section if you enjoyed today's video don't forget to give it a thumbs up and

if you know someone who you think would find this video interesting or

enlightening make sure to grab that URL and send them a message right now

because sharing is caring and I'm sure they will appreciate that you thought of

them for more of the behind the scenes of my predicted life in business make

Watch Out. Tax Season Is Even More Stressful Than Usual. The New York Times

With millions of people filing tax returns under a new tax law and after a long government shutdown, this is a challenging year. We offer survival tips and extensive coverage.

CreditCreditPablo Delcan and Company + Saad Moosajee

Take a deep breath, a drink, whatever calms you: Its tax season.

If you have already filed your return and received a satisfying refund, congratulations! You are a lucky person, because many people are having a hard time this year.

Oddly, much of the pain comes from a shift that might seem pleasant: sweeping changes that, while providing a windfall for the rich, still amount to a tax cut for most Americans. But, combined with the longest government shutdown in history, the short term effects of these changes have been surprisingly disruptive.

Early returns indicate that fewer people than usual have been getting the refunds they expected. That has created an excruciating spectacle: Many people who paid less in taxes every week are discovering that they owe money to the Internal Revenue Service. On top of that, residents of states like New York, New Jersey and California face a new cap on federal deductions for state and local taxes, and wont know whether their federal tax bill has gone up until they have slogged through their returns. Whats more, many tax preparers arent up to speed on all of the new breaks and burdens.

Good luck! It may be a rougher ride than usual. We cant eliminate glitches, fatten your refund or make tax filing a total pleasure. But we have covered the tax mayhem extensively, and prepared articles and tax software reviews, all in the hope that with our help, the ordeal will be easier and, at the very least, more comprehensible.

[Sign up for the , and get even more personal finance news.]

The most important changes to the tax code in decades have taken effect — and filers are confused. Plenty of people who counted on fat tax refunds are disconcerted when they learn that they are not getting them. For some thorny issues, especially those concerning small businesses, professional tax preparers are perplexed as well. We asked certified public accountants and other tax prep pros to do their best and give taxpayers some clear answers.

If youre preparing your own tax return, you may benefit from expert help conveyed by top notch tax software. The Wirecutter, a division of The New York Times Company that rigorously tests products, surveyed the offerings for this season. The reviewers made several recommendations, depending on factors like whether you run your own business and whether your financial situation is complex or fairly simple. If its very simple, they say, try H R Block Free.

Phones are fabulous for playing games and reading news apps. But are they effective at filing tax returns? Millions of people think so. Our reporter Tara Siegel Bernard gave phone filing a test run, but she wasnt impressed. She found the experience unpleasant, in parts, and had unanswered questions about how to fill out a model return. For her own familys taxes, she will rely on a human accountant again this year.

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes, Ben Franklin once said. Given those alternatives, the tax man usually looks good. Yet the particular tortures exacted this year may make the choice less obvious.

The wholesale overhaul of the tax law that is in place for people filing their returns would, on its own, have required the I.R.S. and tax experts to make many adjustments and give a great deal of new guidance this year. The partial government shutdown slowed the process considerably. And the early returns are including a larger number of unpleasant surprises for taxpayers — who owe money when they expected to receive refunds — than was the case in the past.

Only a year after sweeping changes took place, proposals to revamp the tax code — yet again — are rampant. From the Democratic side come calls for a more progressive system, requiring wealthy people to pay more, reversing the rise in income inequality that has been underway. Republicans, on the other hand, want to make the current tax rates — which are set to expire at the end of 2025 — permanent. The division of power in place in Washington means that you shouldnt count on big changes this year. But the heated debates in Congress and on the 2020 campaign trail will give clues about legislation to come.

Wealthy people are reaping the richest benefits from the changes in the tax code, and many of them are rejoicing, as you might expect. But an affluent few are raging against a so called reform that has put more money — a lot more — in their pockets. They were already doing quite well, they say, and dont need extra help from the tax system: Poorer people need the money more. Some millionaires and billionaires, however, resent this kind of talk. Friends of the wealthy tax critics call them traitors to their class.

The 2017 tax bill provides a 20 percent deduction for qualified business income, which is a great boon for those who can get it. But who, exactly, qualifies? The rules are arcane, and I.R.S. guidance has been changing. Health, law, financial services, entertainment and consulting businesses dont qualify, for example, but architecture and engineering do. In some cases, eligibility hinges on small details. Read on for some pointers.

By enabling affluent investors to postpone paying the tax man, new opportunity zone funds are starting to attract substantial sums. The funds are a tax break that was included in the 2017 tax law as a way of drawing money into distressed communities.

The idea is that investors get tax breaks, while the neighborhoods get new businesses and upgraded apartment buildings, shops and the like. But the areas that have been designated as distressed are not always really needy. The vibrant Long Island City neighborhood where Amazon proposed placing its campus, a plan it has abandoned, was designated an opportunity zone, for example. And even when neighborhoods are truly distressed, providing tax breaks for the rich may be an awkward way of redeveloping them.

Colin Kaepernick Is Silenced by a Settlement, but His Knee Spoke Volumes The New York Times

So a compelling two year run of American political and cultural theater comes to a deeply unsatisfying conclusion. , a once brilliant young quarterback, chose to take a knee for his beliefs and endured apparent blackballing by the most powerful sports league in North America.

It would be churlish to criticize this man for taking an and signing a nondisclosure agreement with the National Football League after he had accused the leagues teams of colluding to keep him out. He sacrificed for his beliefs and with a dignified use of free speech, that grandest of American traditions, he came to personify a coming of political age across several sports.

He persevered despite sprays of vitriol from this nations president, Donald J. Trump, who in 2017 used the specter of this black man to stir resentments.

Wouldnt you love to see one of those N.F.L. owners, when someone disrespects our flag, to say: Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! Hes fired. Hes fired! Trump .

It was catnip for the vastly white crowds that roared in disgust over Kaepernick.

It is galling that Kaepernick and his former teammate in the protest and legal action, must remain mum about the corruptions of the industrial complex known as the N.F.L. The owners almost certainly conspired to blackball Kaepernick, ensuring that he would never throw another pass in the league.

As he sought to sign on with a new team for the season after his protest began, and less than five years after he had taken the 49ers to the Super Bowl, owners came up with ever more pathetic excuses for refusing to sign a quarterback so swift and so strong of arm.

Now he can say nothing about that travesty. It feels a bit like the Freedom Riders integrating a lunch counter and agreeing not to talk about it.

I called Ira Glasser, a former director of the American Civil Liberties Union who is also a deep dyed sports fan. He resolutely declined to second guess Kaepernick for surveying the ruin of his career and probably taking a large chunk of money.

He was a star who burst upon the scene explosively, and maybe he extracted as much justice as he could from this situation, Glasser said. But it does leave a stain on the N.F.L. that ought not to be eradicated in the public mind.

Kaepernick did not burn a flag or even hold a proud fist aloft. Its a measure of the subtle nature of his protest that fans and sportswriters went three preseason games before they noticed that, oh yeah, Kaepernick was sitting out the national anthem.

When they asked the young quarterback about it, he talked about police brutality and too many dead black Americans: To me this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.

In the next game and thereafter, Kaepernick took a knee instead, . Yet the whirlwind of anger somehow gained in force.

In the first weeks of that season,. To step into the 49ers postgame locker room was to find a remarkably composed man with the support of many teammates. He walked out of the shower that night and slipped a form fitting shirt over a lithe, tattooed torso. Then he turned to a bristling array of microphones and cameras and calmly answered every question.

Are you proud, a reporter asked him, of your role in stirring players around the N.F.L. — several knelt or raised fists Sunday during the various anthems — to protest? Kaepernick, a new arrival to the world of political activism, shook his head. No airs, man, no airs.

No, no, he said. This movement wasnt for me. As Ive researched these things, as Ive seen more and more, its not right.

He spoke instead of how social media and reading and looking at photographs online had driven home to him how many blacks were dying at the hands of the police.

You see things instantly, day after day, and its hard, he told us before citing some of the casualties. For me, I couldnt see another hashtag, hashtag , hashtag .

At what point, he continued, do we take a stand?

It was dissent, yes, and as unthreatening and American as you could find in a country so often given over now to partisan furies. As Glasser, the civil libertarian, said to me Friday, If thats not acceptable to this country, what is it that we are supposed to be fighting for?

Colin Kaepernick the football player may soon move into historys mists. Kaepernick the human rights activist, the man named an ambassador of conscience, may just be coming into his own.

You hope only that this young man walked away with a mother lode from the league without shame.

Arsenal Adidas kit leaked: Is this the 2019/20 kit Gunners fans are loving? - Duration: 2:13.

Both home and away kits have been shared on various platforms, and they have very retro looks

Adidas will be the Gunners' kit manufacturer from next season for the next five years following a £300m deal struck with the German company

Arsenal have been with Puma for the last four-and-a-half seasons but were with Nike for over a decade before that

And when the announcement of Adidas' return to the north London club was made earlier this season, fans started to reminisce over the retro look on offer in the 1980s and 1990s

The designs that have been leaked are a throwback to Arsenal's First Division glory days

Fans will remember the away kit for one particular reason, however. In 1989, Gunners midfielder Michael Thomas scored the goal the put Arsenal 2-0 up against Liverpool at Anfield to win the First Division

The yellow kit worn that day has since become synonymous with one of the most famous victories in the club's history

And naturally, fans on Twitter have commented on the leaks, and most couldn't help but express their delight

One tweet read: "PLEASE say it's so," Another agreed: "That home one is magnificent

" One commented on the style: "Proper old school kits." READ MORE: THE STUNNING THEORY PAUL MERSON HAS ABOUT MESUT OZIL Another one noted how the kits were a throwback to another decade: "like the 90s all over again man

" One even presumably joked that the kit would bring Arsenal back to their title winning days

"The leaked Arsenal Adidas kit is too good. Now we will be title contenders," the tweet read

Democrats in early primary states agree 2020 field is wide open Politics

"Right now, from what Im seeing out there, nearly everyone is taking a whole wait and see approach to the whole field," Iowa state Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price told CNN at the Democratic National Committees Winter Meeting in Washington.

Price said Iowans were welcoming all the Democratic candidates whod made trips to the state known for its first in the nation caucuses.

The primary field, which already features more female and minority candidates than ever before, is shaping up to be big, with nearly a dozen candidates already and another dozen or so considering running.

"Ive been surprised; everyone has had a great response," Price said. "Ive not heard any bad, any negative things from Iowans. Everyone is just really excited to get a chance to talk to these candidates and get to know them."

"Everyone whos come through, I think, has really hit what theyve wanted to do," Price added. "It seems like everyone has had a really good rollout in the state."

He noted the "tremendous crowds" for Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and the recent rural swing through the state of Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio.

One name did come up as a potential x factor: former Vice President Joe Biden.

"Joe Biden is beloved," Jaime Harrison, associate chairman of the DNC and a former chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, told CNN when asked how Biden would fare in South Carolina. "He spent a lot of time in South Carolina, so he has a lot of long relationships there, and so he will be well received."

But he cautioned that voters in the first in the South primary state will demand personal attention from all the candidates.

"If youre coming to South Carolina, you cant mail it in," Harrison said. "Regardless of who you are, and what your background is and what your history is, youre going to have to go talk to the voters. Youre going to have to build an operation that is a South Carolina operation, not a cookie cutter operation that you take off the shelf."

On Thursday, the party announced details of the first two debates of the primary season, making changes to the traditional setup to accommodate the ever growing field of candidates. Each debate will be held over two consecutive nights with space for up to 20 total candidates. To get a place on the stage, each candidate will have to meet polling and fundraising thresholds.

"We think it is important to reward candidates who have done an effective job across the country in raising small dollar donations," DNC Chairman Tom Perez told a group of party members before the debate announcement. "And so thats never been done before. And Im excited about it."

Perez said the party was committed to allowing candidates to talk about the issues, celebrating the record diversity in the 2020 Democratic field.

"Needless to say, we have a large field. I welcome that," Perez said. "Nobody should be concerned about that. It is a first class problem to have. Weve got a deep field of folks."

Klopp on Brewster plans & why youngster is now 'a proper man' - Duration: 2:56.

Jurgen Klopp believes Rhian Brewster's successful rehabilitation has helped him become "a proper man" at Liverpool

The Reds teenager was earmarked to make his debut at some point this season before a serious ankle injury in January 2018 left the 18-year-old with a lengthy recovery process to negotiate

Thirteen months after the damaging setback, Brewster is back in training and spent most the week with Klopp's first team out in Marbella on a warm-weather training trip as they geared up for Tuesday's visit from Bayern Munich in the Champions League

Klopp has been impressed by how his young forward has handled being sidelined for so long and is delighted to see Brewster back on the pitch

"When long-injured players start training, very often you see little changes in their movements," he told Liverpoolfc

com .  "At the beginning that was the case with him as well. But now it's good and now the steps will be much quicker, the longest part of the rehab is now over and that changed everything

"The boy can go out on the pitch not only to smell it. Being around the boys and doing similar things - or even the same things - changed everything, especially for a young boy like Rhian

The two Reds players have become close away from the pitch and Klopp detailed the impact Oxlade-Chamberlain had on Brewster during their regular gym sessions together at Melwood

He added: "Of course, with a long rehab together with Ox, you cannot have a better lead into the team than Ox because he is pretty close with everybody

"That helped him. He is a good friend with Rhian and being a good friend with Ox is a nice thing

The 2 players Solskjaer is giving 'private training sessions' - Duration: 2:17.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is giving private after-training sessions to Manchester United stars Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial

United's caretaker manager Solskjaer pin-pointed slight changes in the duo he was keen to change from the Jose Mourinho era

According to the Metro, the former striker wanted Lukaku to play on the half-turn in an attempt to speed up their turnover play

In the case of Martial, Solskjaer decided the best way to increase his goal scoring tally was to use his incredible turn of pace to time his runs into the box and score more tap-ins - in a similar style to Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe

The sessions have reportedly lasted for between 15 and 20 minutes, but the indications have been that the overtime has seen improvements already

Solskjaer has previously said about Martial: "I'd like him to make a few more runs in behind because he doesn't miss chances

"  "He's a fantastic finisher. He needs to get more chances, you've got to read and sniff maybe [score] some scruffy goals at times

"Him and Marcus score loads of 'worldie' goals but those tap-ins and making them runs could go a long way to do that

"  The extra training has appeared to have started to show through in Martial's form, with the Frenchman netting three times since Solskjaer arrived in December

Belgian Lukaku has struggled to find the game time to prove his new skills under the stand-in chief - as he has only managed two Premier League starts, with the boss preferring a front three of Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford

Solskjaer has won 10 of the 12 games in the Old Trafford hot seat, with his first defeat coming against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League earlier this week

The Norwegian has managed to transform the mood around United, thanks in part to his high press and a keen focus on attacking play

Ocasio-Cortez is out of the gates with move to stop Trump's 'national emergency' dead in its tracks - Duration: 6:12.

Rep.Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got an early jump on the battle to engage President Trump on his emergency declaration, saying she is prepared to introduce a resolution in the House to overturn it

She wrote on Twitter that she is joining with Rep.Joaquin Castro of Texas to introduce a resolution that would overturn Trump's designation, which includes $6

5billion in funds that were not appropriated by Congress for use on a border wall

The president acknowledged Friday that he will have a court fight on his hands, but another way he could be stopped is if the House and Senate pass a concurrent resolution – and have enough votes to overturn what would be a likely presidential veto

"If President Trump declares a national emergency to fund his border wall, I'm prepared to introduce a resolution to terminate the President's emergency declaration," Castro said in a statement Thursday

She also tweeted a link to a Bloomberg story about her effort. The National Emergencies Act that Trump invoked gives Congress the authority to overturn the action by passing a joint resolution

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about her move before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Sen

Charles Schumer released their own joint statement vowing to use 'every remedy available' to fight the move Ocasio-Cortez wrote that she and Castro 'aren't going to let the President declare a fake national emergency without a fight

' They pointed to a comment by Trump at his press conference that 'I didn't need to do this,' and that he acted to build the wall faster

The statement could reappear in court by critics who argue Trump is breaching his powers and limitations on the power of the purse laid out in the Constitution

Trump was unable to persuade Congress to appropriate $5.6billion he was demanding for border wall construction

"I didn't need to do this" is admitting this isn't an emergency at all."I didn't need to do this" means he's faking a crisis,' wrote Ocasio-Cortez, who has become the most talked-about member of the new Congress and amassed a Twitter following of more than 3 million

The strategies of the legislative battle ultimately will be determined by party leaders who control floor strategy

Pelosi and Schumer asserted in a joint statement that there is no 'crisis' on the U

S.-Mexico border, and threatened to defend the spending power of Congress with every tool at their command

'The President's unlawful declaration over a crisis that does not exist does great violence to our Constitution and makes America less safe, stealing from urgently needed defense funds for the security of our military and our nation,' they said

'This is plainly a power grab by a disappointed President, who has gone outside the bounds of the law to try to get what he failed to achieve in the constitutional legislative process

' Pelosi and Schumer said the moves 'clearly violate the Congress's exclusive power of the purse, which our Founders enshrined in the Constitution

The Congress will defend our constitutional authorities in the Congress, in the Courts, and in the public, using every remedy available

' Pelosi will determine what resolution goes forward and whose name attaches to it

The resolution will get automatic consideration in the Senate, where obtaining a veto-proof majority among Republicans who have been reluctant to confront the president will be the challenge

Trump said in a Rose Garden press event that he would leverage about $6.5billion in existing Defense Department and other funds, along with $1

4billion Congress appropriated for his wall this week.White House officials said earlier in the day on a conference call that the money would allow for the construction of at least 234 miles of steel bollard walls

Man left furious after taxi firm bans him because he is 'smelly' - Duration: 3:36.

A man with a bacterial skin infection said he was "disgusted" when a taxi company banned him because drivers complained he is "smelly"

Stephen Davis said he was offended to receive a voicemail from Andy Cars telling him he could no longer use its services

The 52-year-old said he explained he had a medical condition but the company remained firm, Gloucestershire Live reports

He's since lodged an official complaint with Gloucester City Council, but was told the taxi company is within its rights to refuse the fare

Stephen had been booking taxis to take him to his GP surgery three times a week to have dressings on his legs changed

He suffers from diabetes and cellultis, a bacterial skin infection which can inflame the legs and cause skin breakage

"When I called the operator told me that there was an issue of some sort," he said

"I was then told that I was banned from using Andy Cars due to my personal hygiene  "I have had a problem with my legs for a while and I am being treated and due to see a specialist in March

"  Despite asking the firm to reconsider, he was told the decision has been made and he'd need to look elsewhere for his travel

Stephen added: "I was just disgusted with what they said and yes I did take offence

"It is down to a medical condition.  "I used the company every day and I needed to get from my house to the mobility shop so I could get the mobility scooter that I use each day to get around

"  Gloucester manager for Andy Cars, John Taylor, said: "The situation was that no-one wanted to take him

"We suggested that the NHS may be able to transport him.  "Sometimes personal hygiene is a bit below what you would expect from some

"If someone has a medical condition, the driver has the right to not take them.  "We have explained the situation and I have spoken to the council about the rules and they said it is our choice if we refuse to take a fare

Man Utd news: United star reveals what Solskjaer is REALLY like - he's got a 'nasty side' - Duration: 3:40.

Interim Manchester United manager Solskjaer is on the verge of getting the job full-time after leading the club to 10 wins in his first 12 games in charge

The Norwegian's positive approach has come in for praise after their struggles under former boss Jose Mourinho

And Smalling says he has been a pleasure to work for as he lifted the lid on what life is like under the former Red Devils striker

"I think he has got that sort of nasty side," he told the club's official website

"I think every manager has that, the so-called hairdryer treatment when things need a little turnaround

"A manager has to have all different sides covered. He's a joy to play under and he's great

" United are preparing to go to Chelsea in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday night and Smalling, who won the trophy as a United player in 2016, says they are desperate to win it again

They have not won at Stamford Bridge since a thrilling 3-2 victory back in October 2012 in a game that saw Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres sent off for the hosts

Chris Smalling has revealed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has 'got a nasty side' (Image: GETTY) "This year, we're making sure we get a trophy and, on Monday, we'll be going all for it," Smalling added

"The record at Chelsea, you're right, we've not had too many good results there but I thought, earlier in the season, we were so close to winning until the last dying seconds

"In general, we played quite well there, so let's kick on and improve on that performance

" United go into the game weight a depleted squad as both Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard are ruled out because of injury

Solskjaer has urged Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to step up in their absence and revealed he might call on youngsters Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chiong who have been trying with the first team in the build-up to the clash

On Lingard and Martial, he said: "I think they will be out for two to three weeks

United are preparing to face Chelsea but will be without Anthony Martial (Image: GETTY)Jesse Lingard will also miss the Chelsea clash (Image: GETTY) "Then you're looking at it being Mason Greenwood's time to step in and he's out for a couple of weeks

"Now it's a chance for anyone who plays. Romelu and Alexis can show what they can do

" "We've got other forward options but Angel and Chongy been training with us all week so there's a big chance they will be involved
