Westminster is in meltdown.

The internal contradictions of Brexit were laid bare last night.

Brexit was never anything more than a bunch of slogans.

It could never be turned into a coherent negotiating position.

As we play out the end game, and the Brexit fraud is revealed, its supporters dream up

fantasy deals, so that failure can be blamed on Brussels.

But we must hold our nerve through this Westminster chaos.

A majority of UK citizens know the best future for our country is inside the European Union.

Here we can continue to be part of the world's most successful peace project and together

we can tackle the huge cross-border issues we face, most notably climate change.

We are now the majority.

And as young people reaching voting age want to join us in improving our continent in mutual

friendship, so our numbers grow.

Now that MPs have rejected No Deal the clear choice is still between the deal negotiated

between the UK and the EU and remaining in the EU.

This choice must be given back to the people.

The hostility of the supporters of Brexit, as we see here, to such a democratic check

just proves that they are running scared.

Because they know, as I do, that the will of the British people has changed and has

turned against them and their Brexit chaos.

ST. LOUIS KMOV.com – The attorney for the officer accused of fatally shooting Officer Katlyn Alix released a statement the same day his client made his first court appearance.

Nathaniel Hendren, 29, made his first court appearance via video hookup from the city jail. During the brief appearance, the charges were read to him.

Hendren is a during what has been described as a deadly game involving a revolver.

A court source Tuesday said Hendren would be moved from the city jail and will be held elsewhere for his protection. His cash only bond was set at dollar 50,000.

Hendrens attorney, Talmage E. Newton IV, reportedly has a court appearance Wednesday, where is expected to ask for a bond reduction.

Nathaniel Hendren Mugshot St. Louis Police

In a statement released following the court appearance, Newton said the death of Officer Alix was nothing more than a tragic accident. Read the complete statement below:

We are aware of the rumors, innuendo, and salacious gossip surrounding the accidental death of Officer Katlyn Alix. There is no evidence, nor will there ever be, that this was anything more than a tragic accident. Nate Hendren is devastated by the loss of Katlyn Alix. Spreading rumors and creating unsupported theories is dishonorable on the part of the public, the police department, and the media. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Officer Alixs family during this difficult time.

Newton later released another statement saying Gardner rushed to judgment, saying she is willing to break the law to file the charges:

Circuit Attorney Kim Gardners own words show that not only did she rush to judgment in charging Officer Nathaniel Hendren with a crime just one day after Officer Alixs death, but that she did so without gathering facts or evidence in a thorough, objective or legal way.

Ms. Gardner also specifically states that she is willing to break the law and violate the Constitution to prosecute Officer Hendren for a situation that was a tragic accident.

In a letter obtained by the media, written on January 28, 2019 3 days after charging Officer Hendren Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner ironically accuses the police department of reaching a pre disposed conclusion due to the fact that all of the investigating officers, including Chief of Police John Hayden, characterized the shooting death of Officer Alix as a tragic accident.

It is clear by Ms. Gardners letter that she ignored the seasoned professionals on the scene, who are experienced and entrusted with investigations, when she filed these uninformed and unsustainable charges.

Further, Circuit Attorney Gardner is now on record, in writing, that she is willing to violate the Constitution to support these unfounded criminal charges against Officer Hendren by circumventing the law and demanding information from the police department that would violate the United States Constitution.

It is clear that Circuit Attorney Gardner cannot be impartial, unbiased or objective in continuing to prosecute these charges, and that the entire investigation is unsalvageable and the prosecution irreversibly tainted due to Circuit Attorney Gardners unconstitutional investigation and prosecutorial misconduct.

HOT | Yes, fire is used to keep Chicago trains running in the cold Chicago Tribune

If you see fire along tracks on this frigid Wednesday, dont panic. The with fire to keep switches working, and help with track repairs.

Winter weather can cause snow and ice to clog switches, which control which rail trains run on. Clogged switches can bring trains to a halt until the blockage is cleared.

To combat the problem, Metra uses a gas fed system that runs adjacent to the rail, generating heat in areas where switches are supposed to make contact. This system is used in normal winter weather, not just in the extreme cold seen Wednesday, explained spokesman Michael Gillis. The system is turned on when the temperature is between 40 and 32 and stays on when its below 32.

Extreme cold weather can cause steel to contract, causing breaks, said Metra spokeswoman Meg Thomas Reile. While Metra uses continuously welded rail on most of the system, there are some locations near switches and some crossings where the rail is bolted together. Those areas are the most vulnerable to separating in frigid temperatures, although breaks can happen anywhere along the line.

The Chicago area is in the midst of a dangerous cold spell that could see record low temperatures. You can always find the latest forecast . Heres everything else you need to know, straight from the experts:

Dr. Ernest Wang,...

To repair the breaks, Metra heats the rail, usually with a rope soaked in kerosene that is laid along the base of the rail and lit on fire, Thomas Reile said. The fire heats up the rail and once it expands, workers pull the rails back together and rebolt them or weld them.

Depending on the damage, workers also may need to cut and insert a short section of rail and weld it in place to bring the rails back together, Thomas Reile said.

Broken tracks, on the Metra system Wednesday, especially on the Union Pacific Northwest from Harvard and McHenry, where delays can be more than an hour. Metra Electric District service has been suspended because of wire problems.

Metra service overall is running on a modified schedule Wednesday and Thursday because of the cold. For updates on the agencys service, .

HOT | Flights are canceled, offices closed — even mail service is suspended — amid frigid Midwest we

Brutal temperatures have gripped much of the United States, sending the mercury well below zero and posing challenges for transit and outright danger for those with no place to go for warmth.

A deadly arctic deep freeze enveloped the Midwest with record breaking temperatures on Wednesday, triggering widespread closures of schools and businesses, and the canceling of more than 1,600 flights from Chicagos airports. The cold even prompted the U.S. Postal Service to suspend mail delivery to a wide swath of the region.

Hundreds of public schools and several large universities from North Dakota to Pennsylvania have canceled classes, and residents huddled inside as the National Weather Service forecast plunging temperatures from one of the coldest air masses in years. The bitter cold is theresult of a split in the polar vortexthat allowed temperatures to drop much farther south than normal.

In Chicago, temperatures were still dropping after plunging early Wednesday to minus 19 degrees, breaking the days previous record low set in 1966, though wind chills in northern Illinois made it feel as cold as negative 57 degrees. A wind chill of minus 25 can freeze skin within 15 minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

Snowplows were idled overnight in southwestern Minnesota, where temperatures dropped to negative 29 degrees. And the temperature in Fargo, North Dakota, was 31 degrees below zero.

Officials throughout the region were focused onprotecting vulnerable people from the cold, including the homeless, seniors and those living in substandard housing. Some buses were turned into mobile warming shelters to help the homeless in Chicago.

About 1,300 of Wednesdays canceled flights in Chicago were at OHare International Airport, one of the nations busiest airports. United Airlines spokesman Charlie Hobart said everything tends to slow down during severely cold weather, including manpower, fueling and equipment. Calling the temperatures dangerous, Hobart said United was bringing in extra workers and providing heated tents for employees.

A popular saying goes: Neither snow nor rain nor heat ...will stop the mail from being delivered, but the extreme cold did so Wednesday. The U.S. Postal Service has suspended mail delivery in parts or all of several Midwest states including North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.

Governors in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan declared emergencies as the worst of the cold threatened on Wednesday. In Chicago, major attractions closed because of the bitter cold, including the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Art Institute and the Field Museum.

These conditions are actually a public health risk and you need to treat it appropriately, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday. They are life threatening conditions and temperatures.

In Michigan, homeless shelters in Lansing were becoming overloaded, Mayor Andy Schor said. They also were filling up in Detroit.

People dont want to be out there right now, said Brennan Ellis, 53, who is staying at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.

As she bikes or walks to work at the Field Museum on especially cold days, Akiko Shinya sometimes sniffs and feels the inside of her nostrils freeze, or blinks and feels her eyelashes briefly freeze together. Thats when she flashes back to fossil hunting in Antarctica.

I kind of like that sensation...

At least four deaths were linked to the weather system Tuesday, including a man struck and killed by a snow plow in the Chicago area, a young couple whose SUV struck another on a snowy road in northern Indiana, and a Milwaukee man found frozen to death in a garage.

Hawaii native Charles Henry, 54, was staying at a shelter in St. Paul, Minnesota, and said he was grateful to have a place to stay out of the cold.

That wind chill out there is not even a joke, he said. I feel sorry for anybody that has to stay outside.

Chicago turned five buses into makeshift warming centers moving around the city, some with nurses aboard, to encourage the homeless to come in from the cold.

Were bringing the warming shelters to them, so they can stay near all of their stuff and still warm up, said Cristina Villarreal, spokeswoman for the citys Department of Family and Support Services.

Shelters, churches and city departments in Detroit worked together to help get vulnerable people out of the cold, offering the message to those who refused help that youre going to freeze or lose a limb, said Terra DeFoe, a senior adviser to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

American Indian tribes in the Upper Midwest were doing what they could to help members in need with heating supplies. The extreme cold was a scary situation, because much of the housing is of poor quality, said Chris Fairbanks, energy assistance program manager for the White Earth Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota.

The cold weather was even affecting beer deliveries, with a pair of western Wisconsin distributors saying they would delay or suspend shipments for fear that beer would freeze in their trucks.

But it wasnt stopping one of Americas most formidable endurance tests: the three day Arrowhead 135 was going on as scheduled in northeastern Minnesota. Competitors can cover the race route by bicycle, cross country skis or just running.

Caryn Rousseau and Don Babwin in Chicago; Corey Williams, David Runk and Mike Householder in Detroit; David Eggert in Lansing, Michigan; and Jeff Baenen in Minneapolis contributed to this report. AP Science Writer Seth Borenstein also contributed

HOT | U.S. Midwest Freezes, Australia Burns This Is the Age of Weather Extremes The New York Time

Want climate news in your inbox? , our email newsletter.

In Chicago, officials warned about the risk of almost instant frostbite on what could be the citys coldest day ever. Warming centers opened around the Midwest. And schools and universities closed throughout the region as rare polar winds streamed down from the Arctic.

At the same time, on the other side of the planet, . Soaring air conditioner use overloaded electrical grids and caused widespread power failures. The authorities slowed and canceled trams to save power. Labor leaders called for laws that would require businesses to close when temperatures reached hazardous levels: nearly 116 degrees Fahrenheit, or 47 Celsius, as was the case last week in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.

This is weather in the age of extremes. It comes on top of multiple extremes, all kinds, in all kinds of places.

When something happens — whether its a cold snap, a wildfire, a hurricane, any of those things — we need to think beyond what we have seen in the past and assume theres a high probability that it will be worse than anything weve ever seen, said Crystal A. Kolden, an associate professor at the University of Idaho, who specializes in wildfires and who is currently working in Tasmania during one of the states worst fire seasons.

Consider these recent examples: Heat records were toppled from last year. In parts of Australia, a drought has gone on so long that a child in kindergarten will hardly have seen rain in her lifetime. And California saw its most ruinous wildfires ever in 2018, this week by the states largest utility, Pacific Gas and Electric.

Is it climate change?

Heat and drought extremes are consistent with scientific consensus: More greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere bring a greater likelihood of abnormally high temperatures. Also, broadly speaking, scientists say, a hotter planet makes extreme weather more frequent and more intense.

The real life numbers bear out the climate models. Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are higher than they have been in 800,000 years, and average global temperatures have risen. The last four years have been the hottest on record, , and the 20 warmest years on record have all come in the past 22 years. Ocean temperatures several straight years.

As for the extremely low temperatures this week in parts of the United States, they stand in sharp contrast to the . They may also be a result of warming, strangely enough.

Emerging research suggests that a warming Arctic is causing and pushing polar air down to latitudes that are unaccustomed to them and often unprepared. Hence this weeks atypical chill over large swaths of the Northeast and Midwest.

Friederike Otto, an Oxford University climate scientist who studies how specific weather events are exacerbated by global warming, said that while not all of these extreme events can be attributed to climate change, the profound changes in the earths atmosphere raise the likelihood of a large number of extreme events.

This means it becomes crucial to understand well where your community is vulnerable and this can be something that was not on the agenda without climate change, she said.

Take Chicago, for instance. It woke up to the hazards of heat two decades ago, when a five day heat wave in the summer of 1995 killed hundreds of people, particularly those who lived alone. The city developed a heat action plan. It planted thousands of trees, set up neighborhood cooling centers and created a text messaging system so residents could request that city officials check on vulnerable people.

Now comes that a generation of Chicago residents has never experienced, with Wednesday night temperatures that dipped to minus 21 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 29 Celsius the citys record low is minus 27 Fahrenheit, recorded in January 1985 . The city said it would send out five buses to cruise the streets as mobile warming centers for homeless people. It has issued instructions on how to warm pipes so they dont freeze.

Even on a day when it is colder than average where you live, the world as a whole is frequently warmer than average. You can even see it for yourself.

Extreme heat, though, is the bigger problem overall.

in the United States since the 2000s.

One recent projected a fivefold rise in heat related deaths for the United States by 2080. The outlook for less wealthy countries is worse; for the Philippines, researchers forecast 12 times more deaths. Extreme heat is already devastating the health and livelihoods of tens of millions of people, especially in South Asia.

Extreme heat also affects the nutritional value of many crops. Even some of our most precious indulgences, , are in danger as temperatures rise.

This year, heat has been a problem in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In Alaska, warmer than usual temperatures forced the , while cities in New Zealand, where the weather is generally so temperate that most homes dont have heating or air conditioners, broke heat records. On Tuesday, Wellington, the capital, soared past 87 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest since record keeping began in 1927, and Hamilton topped 91 degrees, the highest since record keeping began in 1940.

Bob Henson, a meteorologist at Weather Underground, a forecasting service, said that in preparing for how climate change affects the weather, we have to be prepared for a wider range of possibilities.

Chicago will be as cold as the Arctic on Wednesday. Well show you why.

Some preparation is connected to resiliency. Mayors promise to make their cities more resilient to climate change after one disaster or another. Scientists experiment with crop seeds that are more resilient to the vagaries of extreme heat and drought.

Dr. Kolden, the fire specialist, noted that as a species, we pride ourselves on being resilient. But that human trait can also have a downside. Its why, often, even when officials tell us to evacuate from a fire zone or a flood plain, we dont. We think well make it, because weve made it before. Or that the forecasters are wrong.

In our DNA, weve got this extreme resilience baked in, Dr. Kolden said. That ends up being our downfall when it comes to the changing conditions.

Livia Albeck Ripka and Charlotte Graham McLay contributed reporting.

HOT | Howard Schultz is the answer no one is looking for Politics

The negative reaction has been swift and striking and somewhat surprising. See Twitter feed.

The fear is that Schultz, with his dollar 3 billion, can spend endlessly on a bid, get on ballots in every state, command attention on TV and dilute the .

"He should stick to coffee," Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents most of Seattle, quipped to reporters including CNNs Ashley Killough on Tuesday.

"If he wants to run, he should run as a Democrat," added the Congressional Progressive Caucus co chair. "I dont understand why hes running as an independent."

Democratic Rep. Marc Pocan, the other caucus co chair, said Schultz is "carving out the grumpy get off my lawn lane."

"He seems to be criticizing everything," Pocan said. "He wants to find his own lane to run in, but he doesnt seem, for a billionaire, to be especially astute to how politics is."

Where are the votes?

And for now, nobody except maybe Schultz actually thinks he can win the White House, .

He . For who though?

Who is the Schultz voter? Is it the kind of voter who backed Green Party candidate Jill Stein in 2016, possibly taking votes away from Hillary Clinton? Or is it the kind of voter who backed Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson in 2016, possibly taking votes away from Hillary Clinton? Or did Johnson take votes away from Trump?

President Donald Trump clearly buys the argument that Schultz, a life long Democrat, would take votes away from the Democrat. On Twitter he said Schultz didnt have the guts to enter the race i.e. please, please, please get into the race and help me in 2020.

So far, Schultzs testing of the political waters hasnt been so great.

"Dont help elect Trump, you egotistical billionaire a asterisk asterisk hole," a protester yelled at a Schultz book event in New York City Monday night. "Go back to getting ratio ed on Twitter. Go back to Davos with the other billionaire elites who think they know how to run the world. Thats not what democracy is."

This heckler suggests a few dynamics at play that will shape Schultzs political fortunes.

People either really love or really hate Trump. Its not that the middle is silent, its just not really there.

While the share of people who call themselves independents is at an all time high, the partisanship among those independents is also at an all time high. Independents lean toward one party or the other, and while they have some negative feelings toward the party they lean toward, they really hate the opposing party,.

Speaking of hate ... the class of people who isnt exactly beloved? Billionaires! Yes, Trump is a billionaire, but he ran as a cultural conservative, "blue collar" billionaire, who guaranteed no cuts to Medicare or Social Security. He ran as the "King of Debt" ... as a Republican.

Schultz is betting that there is a block of voters who are up for grabs and alienated from the party they identify with concerned about the cost of government programs and debt and deficits .

Those dont sound like Stein, Johnson or Ralph Nader type voters. They actually sound more like Republican voters, who, , are still very high on Trump and in theory care about curbing government spending.

What are the policies?

But Schultz isnt at all deterred. Are rich businesspeople ever deterred from the idea that their skills are transferable?

On ABCs "The View," Schultz, directly criticized Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris, and by extension, all the Medicare for all Democrats, saying that he didnt agree with that "kind of extreme policy." No word yet on what policy he does agree with.

"If he runs against a far, left progressive person who is suggesting 60 70 percent tax increases on the rich and a health care system we cant pay for, President Trump is going to get re elected," Schultz said, raising a tax idea suggested by who is not old enough to run for President.

shows broad support for increasing taxes on families earning over dollar 1 million a year 65 70 percent support increasing tax rate for this group.

Schultz should also look at the . A majority of Democrats and independents favor various iterations of this idea. And even a majority of Republicans favor allowing people over age 50 to buy into Medicare. The one caveat on the polling: Not all Medicare expansion plans are the same and there is more support for some than for others, .

about his claim Medicare for all is "un American," Schultz offered: "Its not that its not American. Its unaffordable."

American political campaigns are littered with candidates who are media darlings, who gain little traction among voters because their base isnt real, its just been conjured up by TV talking heads. Wesley Clark, Mitch Daniels, Jon Huntsman and Bill Bradley come to mind.

The two party ticket is a similar fantasy. In reality, peoples party affiliation is very often an expression of their identity of what they like and just as importantly what they dont like.

Schultzs neither here nor there approach to the party system and the policies they represent sounds good in theory, but in reality voters are attached to party ideology, leaders and labels even if they dont like to admit it.
