We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of Artifact.
Good morning.
Or evening.
Or whatever it is.
My name is Surprise, and today we're talking about Artifact once again.
This game.
Is dying.
And it's not like Minecraft is "dying" for 10 years.
This game is ACTUALLY dying.
When you have competitive online game with online figures between 1 and 2 thousands...
Oh boy...
This is bad...
And I don't really know what to say.
I love this game.
The main gameplay loop is really really awesome.
Way better than Hearthstone in my taste anyway.
But something is going very very bad.
And it's not actually about the predatory monetization
If you've actually played this game, especially after the 1.2 update,
You should have known, that it's not actually THAT bad.
But sadly, 1.2 update, you know, one that introduced free packs and progression system
Failed to save the game.
Online figures go lower and lower.
And that's the shame, because when you have too few players in the matchmaking, it breaks the entire game.
You see, in order to get good competitive experience
You have to face the opponents with level of skill similar to yours.
And if there are not enough players, that's impossible.
And that means it's not that enjoyable to play anymore and...
Well, yea...
The question is: how could this happened?
I think there are 5 reasons:
Reason number one: No, it's not greedy microtransactions, that's number two.
Reason number one is marketing...
What marketing? There is none.
Valve just doesn't bother to advertise the game in a traditional way.
They rely ON THE COMMUNITY to do so.
That worked for Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Dota...
But with Artifact, community happened to spread the info about weird business model
rather than core gameplay.
And it started even before the vast majority of people were able to PLAY the game.
When you see how game is going to be pay to play, with microtransactions that affect the gameplay
and with no way to get cards for free,
it's very likely to assume the malicious intents.
And even IF you trust Valve that there were no malicious intents, but rather weird gamedesign decisions...
They're still weird, and it's still asking for money!
And not EVERYONE really trust Valve in that regard.
But I think Valve could overcome that with good marketing.
Let's compare Team Fortress 2 to Overwatch.
I haven't heard ANYTHING about Team Fortress 2 for a while, it's kinda "dead" from that perspective.
Well, I've heard about this game ONCE, but whatever.
And apparently, TF2 still has dozens of thousands of online players and it's always in top 10 games on Steam
However, unless you're IN TF2 community, you don't really hear about the game that much.
But there are always little news about Overwatch here and there, about new heroes, events, skins, new cimenatics etc...
This game HAS PRESENCE in media.
And not to mention, there are traditional ads for Overwatch
I saw the Overwatch commercial on a TV.
On a regular TV on a regular Russian channel!
If they bother to promote the game via television in 2nd world countries, you know they take it seriously.
Same with Hearthstone btw, there are Hearthstone ads EVERYWHERE in the Internet.
Especially when it's new update.
Well, you know what?..
Valve USED to make TF2 cinematics, you know...
"Meet the team" series?
32 million views on Meet the Pyro speak for themselves, and TF2 definitely was NOT a new game back in 2012.
Hm, and how is the last TF2 cinematic doing?
What happened there?
Ah, whatever, I think, if Valve would have done a good marketing campaign
Artifact could have been in a way better place.
The second reason is: yep, weird business model...
Who thought that was a good idea to try to milk money from players so explicitly?
They've realized eventually how bad an idea that was, and they've actually gave players what they want...
But damage is already done.
There is a peak on the online graph after that update, but it didn't last very long.
Reason number three: there is no mobile client of the game yet.
And majority of Hearthstone players for example play it on mobile.
Well, from the other hand: Artifact is way more intense than Hearthstone
And unlike Hearthstone, you can't play Artifact in a semi-AFK mode.
But lack of a mobile client is definitely not making things better.
Reasons number four and five: this is a niche game AND there weren't enough players at the beginning for the niche game.
You see, this game is not for everyone.
It's really hardcore, intensive and...
I'm not even sure if it's unique or just strange.
And not to mention, this is digital card game.
And also, it asks for extra cash way too loud.
But from the other hand, this is THE NEW GAME FROM VALVE.
That doesn't happen that often, you have to check it out, right?
Okay, you've checked it out, it's not your cup of tea, and it asks for extra money...
Well... You've done with that game.
Basically, Artifact has got that many players at day one solely because it's a Valve game.
You know, I was originally thinking, that fans of this game don't play it regularly because it's too...
Like... if you don't feel like playing the game seriously
You'll not start a game as hard as Artifact, even if you like it, right?
I'm not sure.
You see, there are plenty of other hard and intensive games
Like dota, pubg and bo4, that require you to pay close attention.
Well, how about this: FACTORIO has 10 times more online players than Artifact.
And factorio is the game where you think all the time...
Or derp all the time, that depends.
But the fact is: even the target audience doesn't play this game for some reason.
And also, there is a "bonus" reason number 6.
And maybe it's actually the main reason why all of that is happening.
Valve is a private company, and Gabe Newell owns much of the stock.
Valve can do whatever they want, and while we're still buying games on Steam, they have money to do so.
There are rumors and even leaks about canceled Left 4 Dead 3, Episode 3, two Half-Life 3s etc.
You see, unlike EA or Ubisoft, Valve has no investors to push them to RELEASE SOMETHING.
If they feel like they have to cancel or reset the game, they'll do so.
If they feel like making game for 9 years, they'll do so.
If they feel like making card game based on MOBA game.
They. Will. Do so.
I'm sure Artifact developers are very sad about current situation
But not because game isn't profitable, but because nobody wanna play the game of Valve's dream.
And now, they're tinkering around VR.
They're making their own headset and controllers, we know that for a fact.
And here is the catch: VR is a very niche thing for tons of reasons.
Only Valve can afford wasting tons of money on thing like this just because THEY love it.
And only Valve could bring a new entry of their Magnum Opus, the Half-Life franchise, exclusively to VR
From the other hand, there are some Japanese companies makin' games exclusively for their hardware
And they're doing fine, and with such a big name as Half-Life, Valve could force people to buy VR headsets.
And it doesn't have to be Valve's headset neither - you can use any headset you want.
I think Valve just love VR very much and they want to solve the problem of a chicken and egg this way.
So, in my opinion, if valve wanna save Artifact
They have to make this game freemuim, release it on mobile,
Do a proper marketing campaign, and do all of that as soon as impossible.
But would they?
There are rumors in the interwebs that Richard Garfield, creator of Artifact and Magic The Gathering, has actually LEFT Valve.
But from the other hand, they've TRIED to make things better, even if it didn't help very much.
Well, I dunno.
That's a shame to see the only card game we enjoy playing turn to dust
But that is the nature of service-based games.
You just can't play games like these if nobody else is playing them
Maybe I should go back to Factorio or Minecraft
Because you can play them even if nobody, and I mean literally NOBODY else will play those games.
Bye-bye.
