Waching daily Jan 29 2019

We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of Artifact.

Good morning.

Or evening.

Or whatever it is.

My name is Surprise, and today we're talking about Artifact once again.

This game.

Is dying.

And it's not like Minecraft is "dying" for 10 years.

This game is ACTUALLY dying.

When you have competitive online game with online figures between 1 and 2 thousands...

Oh boy...

This is bad...

And I don't really know what to say.

I love this game.

The main gameplay loop is really really awesome.

Way better than Hearthstone in my taste anyway.

But something is going very very bad.

And it's not actually about the predatory monetization

If you've actually played this game, especially after the 1.2 update,

You should have known, that it's not actually THAT bad.

But sadly, 1.2 update, you know, one that introduced free packs and progression system

Failed to save the game.

Online figures go lower and lower.

And that's the shame, because when you have too few players in the matchmaking, it breaks the entire game.

You see, in order to get good competitive experience

You have to face the opponents with level of skill similar to yours.

And if there are not enough players, that's impossible.

And that means it's not that enjoyable to play anymore and...

Well, yea...

The question is: how could this happened?

I think there are 5 reasons:

Reason number one: No, it's not greedy microtransactions, that's number two.

Reason number one is marketing...

What marketing? There is none.

Valve just doesn't bother to advertise the game in a traditional way.

They rely ON THE COMMUNITY to do so.

That worked for Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Dota...

But with Artifact, community happened to spread the info about weird business model

rather than core gameplay.

And it started even before the vast majority of people were able to PLAY the game.

When you see how game is going to be pay to play, with microtransactions that affect the gameplay

and with no way to get cards for free,

it's very likely to assume the malicious intents.

And even IF you trust Valve that there were no malicious intents, but rather weird gamedesign decisions...

They're still weird, and it's still asking for money!

And not EVERYONE really trust Valve in that regard.

But I think Valve could overcome that with good marketing.

Let's compare Team Fortress 2 to Overwatch.

I haven't heard ANYTHING about Team Fortress 2 for a while, it's kinda "dead" from that perspective.

Well, I've heard about this game ONCE, but whatever.

And apparently, TF2 still has dozens of thousands of online players and it's always in top 10 games on Steam

However, unless you're IN TF2 community, you don't really hear about the game that much.

But there are always little news about Overwatch here and there, about new heroes, events, skins, new cimenatics etc...

This game HAS PRESENCE in media.

And not to mention, there are traditional ads for Overwatch

I saw the Overwatch commercial on a TV.

On a regular TV on a regular Russian channel!

If they bother to promote the game via television in 2nd world countries, you know they take it seriously.

Same with Hearthstone btw, there are Hearthstone ads EVERYWHERE in the Internet.

Especially when it's new update.

Well, you know what?..

Valve USED to make TF2 cinematics, you know...

"Meet the team" series?

32 million views on Meet the Pyro speak for themselves, and TF2 definitely was NOT a new game back in 2012.

Hm, and how is the last TF2 cinematic doing?

What happened there?

Ah, whatever, I think, if Valve would have done a good marketing campaign

Artifact could have been in a way better place.

The second reason is: yep, weird business model...

Who thought that was a good idea to try to milk money from players so explicitly?

They've realized eventually how bad an idea that was, and they've actually gave players what they want...

But damage is already done.

There is a peak on the online graph after that update, but it didn't last very long.

Reason number three: there is no mobile client of the game yet.

And majority of Hearthstone players for example play it on mobile.

Well, from the other hand: Artifact is way more intense than Hearthstone

And unlike Hearthstone, you can't play Artifact in a semi-AFK mode.

But lack of a mobile client is definitely not making things better.

Reasons number four and five: this is a niche game AND there weren't enough players at the beginning for the niche game.

You see, this game is not for everyone.

It's really hardcore, intensive and...

I'm not even sure if it's unique or just strange.

And not to mention, this is digital card game.

And also, it asks for extra cash way too loud.

But from the other hand, this is THE NEW GAME FROM VALVE.

That doesn't happen that often, you have to check it out, right?

Okay, you've checked it out, it's not your cup of tea, and it asks for extra money...

Well... You've done with that game.

Basically, Artifact has got that many players at day one solely because it's a Valve game.

You know, I was originally thinking, that fans of this game don't play it regularly because it's too...

Like... if you don't feel like playing the game seriously

You'll not start a game as hard as Artifact, even if you like it, right?

I'm not sure.

You see, there are plenty of other hard and intensive games

Like dota, pubg and bo4, that require you to pay close attention.

Well, how about this: FACTORIO has 10 times more online players than Artifact.

And factorio is the game where you think all the time...

Or derp all the time, that depends.

But the fact is: even the target audience doesn't play this game for some reason.

And also, there is a "bonus" reason number 6.

And maybe it's actually the main reason why all of that is happening.

Valve is a private company, and Gabe Newell owns much of the stock.

Valve can do whatever they want, and while we're still buying games on Steam, they have money to do so.

There are rumors and even leaks about canceled Left 4 Dead 3, Episode 3, two Half-Life 3s etc.

You see, unlike EA or Ubisoft, Valve has no investors to push them to RELEASE SOMETHING.

If they feel like they have to cancel or reset the game, they'll do so.

If they feel like making game for 9 years, they'll do so.

If they feel like making card game based on MOBA game.

They. Will. Do so.

I'm sure Artifact developers are very sad about current situation

But not because game isn't profitable, but because nobody wanna play the game of Valve's dream.

And now, they're tinkering around VR.

They're making their own headset and controllers, we know that for a fact.

And here is the catch: VR is a very niche thing for tons of reasons.

Only Valve can afford wasting tons of money on thing like this just because THEY love it.

And only Valve could bring a new entry of their Magnum Opus, the Half-Life franchise, exclusively to VR

From the other hand, there are some Japanese companies makin' games exclusively for their hardware

And they're doing fine, and with such a big name as Half-Life, Valve could force people to buy VR headsets.

And it doesn't have to be Valve's headset neither - you can use any headset you want.

I think Valve just love VR very much and they want to solve the problem of a chicken and egg this way.

So, in my opinion, if valve wanna save Artifact

They have to make this game freemuim, release it on mobile,

Do a proper marketing campaign, and do all of that as soon as impossible.

But would they?

There are rumors in the interwebs that Richard Garfield, creator of Artifact and Magic The Gathering, has actually LEFT Valve.

But from the other hand, they've TRIED to make things better, even if it didn't help very much.

Well, I dunno.

That's a shame to see the only card game we enjoy playing turn to dust

But that is the nature of service-based games.

You just can't play games like these if nobody else is playing them

Maybe I should go back to Factorio or Minecraft

Because you can play them even if nobody, and I mean literally NOBODY else will play those games.

Bye-bye.

Is Jesus Real? - Two Minute Message - Duration: 2:28.

- Hey everybody, Daniel Fusco here.

Welcome to today's Two Minute Message.

So one of the things that we hear a lot,

because we love to say that Jesus is real,

people always say, what does that really mean?

I mean like what am I supposed to do with that?

Especially, we live in a skeptical day and age.

It's like people like to say that, you know,

that they trust science

and really what they're saying is that, in the ways

that science backs up their already held position,

that's what they wanna trust.

Or they say, hey I'm woke, I'm awake to what's going on

and so in some ways, Jesus was the ultimate

and only person who was ever truly woke

because he's the only person,

who ever always did those things that pleased his Father

but what do I mean when I say that Jesus is real?

What that means is that Jesus exists at street level,

right where you are, whether you believe in him

or are aware of him or not, why?

Because the Bible says that in God,

we live and move and have our being,

there's no reality outside of being with God,

even if you're completely unaware of it.

See, one of the things

that you realize when you read the Scriptures is that,

it's one thing to hear about Jesus on the cross,

but when Jesus rose from the dead, he told his disciples

and lo, I'll be with you always even unto the end

of the age, now here's the thing.

Either that's true or that's not.

But if you were to search the Scriptures,

what you realize is that Jesus is with you,

at every single moment.

There is no life outside of Jesus.

Whether or not you believe in him.

And so one of the things that I've learned in my own life,

is that so much of life is about being aware

of what really is, as opposed to trying to find ways

to justify what I think that it is.

And for each one of us, Jesus is at street level,

right where you are and this is what I would do,

I would simply say to you,

if you don't believe me, can you first read the Scriptures?

Read the Gospels of Jesus and then second pray

and say, Jesus if you are truly real,

if you are truly with me, will you reveal yourself

to me in a way that I can understand?

Here's the thing,

I've never met someone who did those two things,

who didn't become a follower of Jesus.

Now the question is, is are you truly woke?

Or do you truly believe in science?

If you do, you would have no problem taking that step,

because at best, science is simply an understanding,

an observation of the way things are.

I've never met someone who doesn't do it,

I would love for you to try and prove me wrong.

So take that step.

Now this is what I want you to do.

First, I want you to share this video

because this is the big question of life

and all of us know people who don't wanna believe in Jesus

for all sort of reasons

and in the comment section, I want you

to tag people who you love, who you want to hear that video,

say, hey check this video out

and let's just see what God wants to do.

God bless you guys, I'll see you soon.

Help! My First Gogokid Class is a Trial Class - A Gogokid Brand Contributor Video - Duration: 5:26.

hey guys teacher Janice here. I've been helping

some amazing referrals through the process in the last week so I've been

really cheering these teachers on and celebrating their first bookings but I

also know from working with these teachers firsthand that can be really

overwhelming when you get started so your first class is usually a trial

class and there's so much information out there to remember today I want to

boil it down to just trial class 101 the very bare minimum basics that you need

to know right before you go into that first trial class trial class 101 let's

go what is a trial class a trial class is a free class that a student takes so

this is not a student who has had a go go kid class before this is a student

who thinks they might want to become a gogokid so this is a free class it is

their first impression of the company and you have the honor of being the face

of gogokid you are the first person that they will meet from our teaching

team so make the best of it have a positive attitude maybe you've heard

that sometimes the students don't show up it's true with anything that I try

for free sometimes I do it and sometimes I don't

and the same applies here sometimes we have student no-shows you should always

be ready for a student to show up and if a student does show up you have such an

honor and such an opportunity to sign them up to be a gogokid student and

to chase your ten dollar conversion class bonus which is fantastic students

at gogokid get one trial so it is on you you need to sign this student up are

their technical situations that come up and exceptions do some students get

multiple trial classes that's probably true but right now for the purposes of

trial class 101 assume the trial student gets one class with you and you need to

woo them and sign them up and get them so excited to sign up as a gogokid

student and come back for more classes please note that the PowerPoint might

change before class begins so you might go to bed prepping a toys trial and you

might wake up to find out you're going to be traveling in space this is totally

normal do not worry about this

when you come in for a child class you should have already prepped all six

trial PPTs so I'll leave the resource down below where you can prep all of

those right now I personally like to keep all of my props for my trial

classes on my desk ready to go and this trial class could change while I'm

sleeping it could change before class and it can

even change during class I might meet the student decide this lesson isn't

right for them change it to the right one and all my props are in the same box

at the ready easy peasy lemon squeezy so please if you have not prepped all of

the trial lessons you can see those right now if you are a gogokid

teacher just click the link in the description box below please press that

start button at zero zero even if the student isn't there so if your child

class starts at 7 o'clock 700 flashing start sign you need to push that button

even if they're not there your camera needs to stay open you can feel a little

awkward at first camera open you are on the clock you are getting paid that

class was being recorded so you want your smiling face ready to teach being

on camera as soon as 0 0 hits if the student does

not log in at all for 15 minutes you never saw them you never saw their name

login you never saw them at all after 0 0 you can type student no-show in the

chat box in the classroom push enter so you can see it and take a screenshot and

your screenshot should show your computer clock and the URL at the top of

your Chrome browser to show the full class ID that you are in the right class

at the right time so take a great screenshot that includes all of that

information and then X out of your browser tab and leave there isn't going

to be a button that says finished if you're leaving at the 15 minute mark

so these are like just the things that could happen to you during your first

trial the very basics after you survive your first trial if

you're ready for more tips here are some places you can get them you can take a

trial workshop with me you can take a trial workshop with teacher Brett it's

an hour long workshop live with other teachers you can ask questions about

things that are going well things that aren't going well we have two different

presentations with different ten here to help you with your trial

classes if you can't get to one of those yet in the official gogokid Facebook

group in the files section we have recorded versions of these workshops so

you can go to a mini shortened version of the workshop to get some tips right

now from the same workshop coaches and that'll kind of hold you over until you

can get to the live workshop if your trial class is coming up soon and you're

brand new to gogokid please know I am cheering you on come to the Facebook

group come to come to your colleagues and ask for help ask the teacher who

referred you leave comments in any brain contributor video and we'll connect you

with resources that can help you meet you where you are but I know it can be

so overwhelming at the start with so much information if your first class is

a trial class I'm cheering you on I want to provide this little mini resource for

you today and I wish you the best of luck

happy teaching

What is eco-anxiety? - Duration: 11:20.

Its really cold in new york, so i'm gonna film next to this radiator and try to keep warm

[whoosh sound effect]

Climate Change can be really overwhelming.

Especially when I'm really plugged in and I'm trying to follow the waterfall of news

and science every day.

As each new paper on ocean temperature increases, or ice sheet loss, or UN report is published

this sense of doom and hopeless kind of settle on my brain like a heavy layer of dust.

A lot of the things I do start to feel really tiny and miniscule and it is silly to even

pretend that something I did would have any measurable impact on global climate.

A few years ago, I started hearing this referred as 'eco-anxiety,' and I really wanted

to explore that further, so invited Dr. Ali Mattu who runs The Psych Show and also happens

to be a Clinical psychologist over for a chat.

Okay, so let's start big picture, shall we?

What is eco-anxiety?

Ali: It's really about fear and hopelessness about what's happening related to the climate,

how that's going to impact you, how that's going to impact your family, your friends,

and generations to come.

Dr. Ali Mattu: It's really about fear and hopelessness about what's happening related

to the climate, how that's going to impact you, how that's going to impact your family,

your friends, and generations to come.

I think what elevates it from normal fears and stress that we might all have about our

planet, to something that's much more about anxiety, is that hopelessness, feeling kind

of stuck in your worries, and not knowing what to do, or feeling like there's nothing

that you could do.

Miriam: I've also heard eco-anxiety referred to as climate anxiety, climate change distress,

ecological grief among other permutations.

But they're all basically getting at this same idea of distress, worry, and hopelessness

connected to your global or local environment.

Ali: So there's no real psychiatric definition for eco-anxiety, it's not considered to be

any type of disorder, but it is a new term that's come up to classify a lot of these

type of fears.

And it's probably most similar to something like generalized anxiety disorder, where we

have a number of different worries about events in our life, day to day things that we have

to do, and a lot of these worries keep us from making decisions.

Miriam: Even though eco-anxiety isn't an 'official' diagnosis - it is worth exploring

for several reasons.

The hopeless and worry associated with eco-anxiety can stop us from doing the, yes, hard, but

incredibly necessary work of reducing fossil fuel use and preparing for the consequence

of climate change.

But it's pretty easy to argue that we should be more worried about climate change.

The impacts we're already seeing are devastating.

Ali: Well, that's the funny thing about climate anxiety, is in some cases, we want people

to be more anxious about it.

It's always hard when it comes to public health, and preparedness, and emergency responses,

to get people anxious.

It's a really difficult thing to do, because we are really wired to respond to what's happening

right now, not what's going to happen 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10, 20 years down the road.

So when there's a blizzard coming, or a tornado, or there's danger of fires, or drought, or

all of that kind of stuff, but it's down the road, it's not immediate, it's really hard

to get people anxious.

And we want people to get anxious, so they prepare and they act on it.

Climate or eco-anxiety is associated with the very real trauma experienced by people

living on the front lines of climate change: like individuals living in areas with poor

air quality, or in the risk for hurricanes, or experiencing extreme heat events without

access to air conditioning.

Ali: People might not think of it as eco-anxiety, but people who were in Michigan and didn't

have access to clean water had a lot of anxiety related to their environment.

Anything that happens in the environment tends to impact our most vulnerable populations

the most, so definitely kids, people who are pregnant, the elderly, people who live in

parts of cities and towns that might have lower real estate value, people who don't

have the means to be able to easily move or just go away for the weekend.

It's those type of communities that are hardest hit by natural disasters, or by changes in

water supply, or by drought, or extreme heat, or extreme cold.

People in those communities might not label it as eco-anxiety, but you bet they're experiencing

higher rates of anxiety, of hopelessness, of PTSD.

We saw that with Hurricane Katrina.

Years down the road, we'll probably see that with Puerto Rico, absolutely.

Miriam: But what can we do about this?

For people who are experiencing it, or if you're experiencing eco-anxiety yourself?

Ali: So you're not alone.

That's normal, it's healthy.

The thing to know is what do we do about it.

Sometimes people struggle with worries and there's nothing you can do about it.

You turned in your paper, the professor's going to grade it, the teacher's going to

grade it, there's nothing left to do, and then it's more about acceptance skills.

But that's not where we are with climate change and the environment.

There's a lot that we can do.

So number one, is definitely having some type of disaster preparedness kit in your home.

And that's for whatever you're likely to experience in your environment.

And so we're here in New York City, so, yeah, we might get a super storm, or we might be

cut off from access, like if something hits New York, subways are down, tunnels are closed,

bridges are closed, so we might be stuck in this environment for a long time.

Or if you're in an area that might be prone to a fire, or if you're in an area prone to

tornado, or hurricane, things like that.

What do you need to have ready in your home, and include things that are going to help

you to emotionally cope.

So a lot of us use music, or apps, or things like that to help us to emotionally cope,

like maybe you go on YouTube and you watch a funny Ellen video, where she's pranking

someone, and that cheers you up.

But if internet is down, if power is down, what's a version of that, that you can have

with you to help you cope?

Is it going to be a book?

Is it going to be some kind of board game?

Is it going to be printed out photos of loved ones, of family, of things like that?

So have some type of kit, but that also includes an emotional element to help you cope with

the intense emotions that you might experience.

And then number two, it's also about having a plan with your family, with your loved ones,

and something that is going to get you connected, also, with your local community.

So when Hurricane Sandy hit here, if you were below a certain part of Manhattan, you did

not have power, and you might not have access to water too.

And what we saw happen over there, is a lot of people who were in lower Manhattan were

connecting with friends and family that were more uptown and did have power.

So when it comes to any type of climate-related disaster, being able to connect to your larger

community is critical, absolutely critical, just in terms of being able to get access

to a safe shelter, being able to get access to power, or to water, or to things like that.

So it's not something you can do alone.

No way.

And the other thing is to definitely talk to people about all of this, and to talk to

people about your fears, about your concerns.

There's more research coming out now, about how there are network effects, where if you

talk to someone you work with, you talk to someone you go to school with, how that actually

impacts the whole network of people that you're connected to.

So this is a real tangible difference that you can make.

And it's actually critical to any type of preparation, and policy change, is actually

just having these conversations, because they do have ripple effects in your social network

and everyone you're connected to.

Miriam: Climate change is really scary and it is probably going to keep getting scarier

unless something extremely dramatic happens right now.

But there are a lot of reasons to stay hopeful.

Ali: I have a lot of hope and optimism about all of this.

What I'm constantly reminded about is, if you look at our evolutionary history, the

greatest period of growth of the frontal lobe, of the part of the brain that helped us become

the species who we are, the most advanced part of our brain, the greatest period of

development there happened during a period of massive climate change on our planet.

And I think being able to cope and adapt to environments is so inherent in who we are

as a species.

We live all over the planet, and it's probably because of massive climate change that we

are the species who we are.

But now we're much more of a intra-dependent global community, where one thing in one part

of the world does impact something in another part of the world.

And we're just not wired to be able to negotiate those type of social situations.

That's really hard for us.

It's really, really hard to scale up the type of helping behavior and community support

that is so a part of our DNA.

And so this is the challenge for our generation, for the next generation, for the generation

after that, is how do we overcome our tribalism and tap into that ability to adapt to change

at a global level.

Miriam: And that feels to me like a pretty great way to wrap up this vide.

Thank you so much for watching and a thank you so much to Ali for stopping by on my channel.

I cannot thank him enough for all the insight and ideas that he gave to me and his help

in making this video.

We had a conversation that was almost an hour long that I've kind of quickly edited together

and is now available to patrons at any level over on my Patreon.

And if you want watch more of Ali, which I highly recommend you do, go over and subscribe

to "The Psych Show" – I recommend starting with his video "Why I give psychology away."

What is Cystic Acne? - Duration: 2:44.

What is Cystic Acne?

Considered the most severe type of acne, nodulocystic acne, or cystic acne, is painful and leaves

permanent disfiguring scars on its victims.

It is an inflamed breakout that develops on the face and other areas of the body that

leaves behind large blemishes measuring up to several centimeters across.

The name derives from the cyst that develops deep within the skin following infection.

The cyst is filled with pus and is found under a swollen pustule.

Not all severely inflamed acne can be considered cystic.

The existence of a cyst distinguishes this form from the common acne known as acne vulgaris.

A person suffering from nodulocystic acne not only develops cysts but also nodules.

Unlike cysts, which feel soft, nodules are hard lumps under the skin's surface, and they

can also be painful.

Since nodules from deep within the skin, they take a long time to heal.

The term "nodular acne" refers to a particular type of acne that develops nodules but does

not have cystic lesions.

Teenage boys and young men are more prone to cystic acne generally, although women are

likely to suffer from it during their menstrual cycle or post pregnancy.

Nodulocystic acne can actually occur at any age, but it is more common during the teenage

years when various hormonal changes take place in the body.

Experts believe that the main cause is overactivity of the sebaceous glands.

Extra oil is secreted by these glands and clogs the pores on the skin surface, and it

then combines with external bacteria to form an infection in the clogged pores.

When left unchecked, the infection could affect the deepest tissue of the skin, causing the

painful nodulocystic acne.

The presence of dead skin cells within the pores causes cystic acne as well.

The likelihood of developing scars following nodulocystic breakouts is extremely high because

of the severe damage to surrounding skin tissues.

In order to prevent the development of permanent scars, pricking and scratching the affected

portions of the skin should be avoided.

Those who are suffering from cystic acne are advised to seek professional medical help.

This type of acne requires systematic medication that only healthcare professional can provide.

Unlike common acne that can easily be treated with topical bactericidal, nodulocystic acne

requires a combination of more aggressive treatments that include oral antibiotics,

intralesional corticosteroid injections, and possible surgical excision and drainage.
