Huge hermit crab's shell looks like terrifying Toy Story character - and is the stuff of nightmares
Remember Sid from Toy Story ?
In case hes mercifully faded from memory or youve - gasp! - never seen any of the Toy Story films, Sid was the sadistic mutilator of toys who lived next door to Andy.
Sids room was a little shop of horrors, with terrifying (but ultimately good) hybrid toys lurking under the bed.
Now a picture of a coconut crab has brought up memories of Sids frightening toys - specifically, that spooky spider-baby thing.
A species of hermit crab, coconut crabs are already quite scary looking, but when one recently decided to use a discarded dolls head as a shell, it became the stuff of nightmares.
Sweet dreams?
Whereas hermit crabs require shells because of their soft bodies, coconut crabs actually have a tough exoskeleton. However, while theyre growing, they usually find gastropod shells for protection.
Or just whatever happens to by lying around on the beach.
Needless to say, people were alarmed by the crabs appearance.
As spine-chilling as the crab looks, its appearance is in fact indicative of a larger problem which crabs face.
One Redditor commented saying: This is actually pretty sad on top of creepy, since things like this is usually a result of a lack of available shells for the crabs, which they need. Dont collect shells with internal parts from beach areas. Crabs need them.
According to the Daily Mail , the picture was taken on Henderson Island, in the Pitcairn Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
