- Jesus came down with the 12, and stood on a stretch
of level ground with a great crowd of his disciples,
and a large number of the people
from all over Judea and Jerusalem,
and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon.
And raising his eyes towards his disciples,
he said, "Blessed are you who are poor,
"for the kingdom of God is yours.
"Blessed are you who are now hungry,
"for you will be satisfied.
"Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.
"Blessed are you when people hate you,
"and when they exclude and insult you,
"and denounce your name as evil
"on the account of the Son of Man.
"Rejoice and leap for joy on that day.
"Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.
"For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.
"But woe to you who are rich,
"for you have received your consolation.
"Woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry.
"Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep.
"Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors
"treated the false prophets in this way."
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- You never really know someone until you know
what they want, until you know what they really care about.
My friends, Jesus, he wants us to know him.
And so he begins his first homily by telling us
what he cares about the most,
by telling us exactly what he wants,
exactly what he came to earth to give us.
Blessedness.
He wants us to be blessed.
Now, in the Bible this word refers
to something very specific, the kind of happiness
that only God can give, the kind that he created us for,
the kind that we yearn for in the depths of our heart,
and we can never seem to truly find.
Or to use the words of Saint Augustine,
our hearts are restless until they rest in you, O Lord.
Jesus begins his first sermon in the gospel of Luke,
telling us the path to this kind of blessedness,
to this happiness, and this is what he wants for us.
He wants our lives to have meaning,
to be full of happiness, a happiness that goes
deeper than any of the superficial kind of happiness,
that comes with earthly things,
such as money or power or popularity.
Jesus came to show us how to live like that.
And that's why he wants us to flourish.
The human being fully alive is what God desires for us.
And how easily we forget this.
How easily we fall into that sinful trap
of seeing our Christian life as a list of obligations,
a hindrance to fun,
a limit on our freedom.
But we are made by God.
And in a way the manufacturer always knows
what's best for his product.
And so everything that Jesus teaches,
everything he asks of us, and everything
that the Church teaches about how to live, about
what we are supposed to do, what we are to avoid,
well, in a sense, those are our operating instructions
meant for our benefit, meant for our blessedness.
Jesus doesn't want us to waste our lives.
He wants us to live them and live them to the full.
Please rise.
I believe in One God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
- [Congregation] I believe in One Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages,
God from God, light from light, true God from true God,
begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation,
he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.
For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated
at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one holy Catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins,
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come, amen.
- As a people called to the life of blessedness,
we pray for all we need.
- That the Church will know God's blessing
in preaching the gospel of the risen Christ,
we pray to the Lord.

- That the peoples of the world may share equally
in the abundance with which God has blessed creation.

- Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial
of his death and resurrection,
we offer you, Lord, the bread of life
and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks
that you have held us worthy to be
in your presence and minister to you.
Humbly we pray that partaking of the body
and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one
by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord, your Church spread throughout the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity,
together with Francis, our pope,
and George Leo, our bishop, and all the clergy.
Remember also our brothers and sisters
who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,
and all who have died in your mercy.
Welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
that with the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God,
with blessed Joseph, her spouse,

- At the Savior's command informed by divine teaching,
