If you're unsure about what gain staging is or why you should be doing it,

this tutorial will teach you how to use gain staging to get a better mix.

Stick around, because I'm going to be talking about what you can do in your DAW,

as well as your plugins to properly set up gain staging.

[What is gain staging and how to do it]

Hey everyone, Jake from Transverse Audio here.

This process really is just setting levels so nothing is distorting on its own

or when summed together in the master.

And it's also done to make it easier to adjust levels in the mixer, which I'll explain why later on.

Okay, the main objective of gain staging is to ensure that nothing is clipping,

which would be reaching a decibel level of anything 0 dB or higher.

Pretty much all audio software (including plugins and DAWs) will let you know that your

signal is clipping when you start to see red on a decibel meter.

But, it's not always this obvious, you might be just Barely skimming 0 dB,

and that can be enough to cause distortion.

A quick tip, it's okay to move your fader past the 0 dB marker but what should not

is the actual signal volume.

And when dealing with many tracks or sources of audio (including mix buses),

the decibel level of all of these will add up and can cause distortion that might not be noticeable on their own

but can be more obvious when they combine into the master track.

That is the reason you don't want to clip.

Distortion can ruin a really good mix and it's best to do it right away

as it can be hard to figure out why your mix doesn't sound good later on.

Not to mention, you might be making adjustments or adding in effects

that won't sound the same if you gain stage after the fact.

This is because if a signal is clipping before it hits the mixer, it will go into the effect plugins,

distorted.

When it comes to recording live though, it is critical that this is the first thing you do

as it kind of sets it in stone once it's recorded.

Which is why it's not as important to gain stage samples or audio files.

much different than the flexible nature of digital audio.

Now, you might be wondering what a good decibel level is to set everything to.

Although there isn't one answer to this, I can give you a range to aim for.

The actual value doesn't matter too much, as long as it's well below 0 dB

and is consistent throughout your project.

It is, however, common for people to go for anything from -10 to -18 dB.

This is so you have a lot of headroom for when all of the track's decibel levels combine in the master track.

And you should try to have your master decibel level at least -3 or lower.

If you can, -6.

Some people even go as low as -10.

This is to leave space for mastering your track.

And some mastering engineers (or software) will require that it's at a certain decibel level.

Okay, time to go over where you need to be setting up your levels to properly gain stage.

Starting from the source, most virtual instruments will come with a master output level

and when they do, you don't need to worry about pre-gain

and can even slam it to 100 if you properly gain stage in the plugin.

Like I said before, you should bring it down to -10 to -18 dB.

An important thing to remember is that the faders in your mixing console change the volume

after the signal has gone through the effect plugins.

This is why you need to pay attention to "pre-gain" or "clip-gain" in the case of audio files

to ensure the sound isn't distorting before the effects are applied.

In FL Studio, the pre-gain is called "channel-volume" and the name can vary across different DAWs.

A good place to have your pre-gain at, is again, around -10 to -18 dB.

And going lower than this level won't make your mix sound better,

it's just a safe range to stick to.

If you find you are pulling a fader down too far, you can just add a plugin that controls gain

to compensate for the level it's down to so you can bring it back to 0.

And there you go, the end result should leave your mixer faders as high

(or as close to 0 dB) as possible and will make mixing much easier.

This is because the change in the decibel level vs how much you move the fader

increases substantially the further you drop it down.

And if you look closely, you'll notice how much this really starts to get out of control.

This can make it very hard to fine-tune your levels, as small changes can dramatically

impact the volume the further down your faders are.

The best way to make sure you're not clipping after that is to generally mix at a low level

and if it's too quiet for you to hear, don't use your master fader to turn the volume up.

Instead, you can use the knob on your speakers, headphones, or audio interface.

I hope this tutorial on what gain staging is helped you understand how to use it

to create a better mix.

5 Reasons Why GOATS is KILLING Overwatch League - Duration: 7:18.

overwatch League season 2 has just begun and surprise surprise goats is

still king today let's talk about the five reasons goats might be a bigger

problem for overwatch League than you might think my name is Nate and welcome

to Blizzard guides, now I just want you guys to keep in mind before I start this

video I'm not making this video because I hate the overwatch League or because I

hate Blizzard or anything like that it's actually quite the opposite I'm putting

this out there because I'm realizing more and more the impact that goats is

really having on the overwatch League and the reason that we watch o WL I'm

going to try MP as neutral as possible but I am still a person so I may not be

perfect I just want to start a discussion about goats watch League and

that was a joke but either way let's get into this video at number 5 goats is

just difficult to watch just watching team fights ends up being teams grouping

up team pushes in one team dies and then that's it and then you know you rinse

and repeat I guess that just means that it's easier to watch but for people that

are new it really makes the game unfun to spectate since each fight devolves

into just a flash of colors even as a player that is GM I have trouble

watching some of the fights if I'm not just glued to the screen which is an

ideal for an eSport that is trying to go mainstream

I personally believe and I have talked to others and have confirmed that dive

was just easier to digest and to watch as a new player the concept is simple

and you also got the cool place with tracer zipping around and fragging and

Ganges popping a blade and you know getting team wipes I'm not suggesting

that Blizzard revert to dive but I'm merely showing you dive as a point of

reference to what we used to see and also add on to the fact that not a

single player's POV is really usable in goats from a spectating point of view

the overwatch League viewing experience felt more like a MOBA more often than

not which for a game that markets itself as a team-based first-person shooter

isn't exactly the best idea but moving on at number 4 goats just really leaves

a lot to be wanted for the league at its core Awards League isn't only about

showing viewers overwatch as a game it's about the entertainment overwatch League

is after all an entertainment product and in order to stay profitable you need

people buying merch people buying seats and most importantly people watching if

Blizzard doesn't keep the game fresh to watch and fresh to play you lose

viewers that funnel into the entertainment product that is the

overwatch league which causes a heavy decline in both the league and the game

since you have less players playing the game and then you can't really grow your

viewers since you have less players playing and only keep those that either

play and watch or those that don't play but still watch but never those people

that play but don't watch this is what happened with the Starcraft 2 scene at

least in the West most players didn't play Starcraft 2 and they only wanted to

watch pros do on Starcraft 2 which is why the Starcraft 2 scene is the big

thing here in the West and isn't really growing if Blizzard continues to allow

metas where tanks and supports reign supreme you're not going to have an

entire section of heroes which makes up over 50% of the roster and represents an

entire different set of skills which in turn doesn't incentivize players to

continue playing DPS when the latter and the league requires that you drop that

role and play an entirely different role with different skills which hurts the

overwatch League hurts overwatch and hurts the player base so at number three

kind of building off that last point these teams in the overwatch league are

worth millions and millions of dollars and yet you have players that are signed

as dps who don't play any dps in the league players with impressive levels of

mastery on the ring chemical skill as well as their game knowledge flexing to

heroes that just aren't focused on their mechanics as much as they are on their

ability management and game sense now I'm definitely being biased in this part

so fair warning but I definitely don't think that good ability management is

fun to watch nor does it really display the level of skill involved in a league

I'm not saying that it isn't skilled but I'm saying that it just doesn't appear

as skilled I guess I'm just being super repetitive but really you have to just

have a watchable and enjoyable game to have a successful League that in my

opinion should be led by the gameplay but it's not in this case I believe that

it's being led by the production quality and these storylines at the moment you

can engineer production quality but you can't always engineer storylines and you

can't always rely on those either since those have higher levels of investment

to get involved too if you're a viewer so at number two this is a bigger

problem on a larger level in the beginning of season one you had the

mercy meta and that meta was arguably not that fun to play but at least it was

very enjoyable to watch you definitely had a good set up for those memorable

clips that really brought pine into the main overwatch fanbase for example

you've got good storylines and you also got exciting gameplay with goats

you can't really have that and more specifically with goats and other tank

and support heavy comps where the carries lie in the support or tank play

you can't really have those clips and that memorability you can with other

metas I'd argue that if Blizzard balanced the game towards skill and more

towards the pro scene you'd end up with a much better viewer experience for the

overwatch League that's what I loved about watching csgo and even though that

I don't play any csgo at all or at least very little I could quickly and easily

recognize the skill behind the gameplay with the current goats watch League not

so much and again that's only a joke I'm putting in it there so you know the

video is entertaining it's just a joke please don't please don't get bad but

finally last but not least and at number one freshness goat just doesn't feel

fresh ranks players have been playing goats for a very long time to the point

where I and many other players are taking large breaks or in some other

cases altogether quitting I'm not quitting but I am taking a very short

break from overwatch competitive I still play FFA though we're not asking for

balances that change the meta each and every day but what we're saying rather

is that we're asking for changes that allow players to play different comps on

different Maps not where some variation of triple support or goats gets played

every single match now I'm not a game designer so I can't offer suggestions

but some of the community suggestions have been a ban overprotect system

forced you to to map rotations and many other ideas now I can't get into how

each and every one of those would force diversity but in the end there's a lot

of things and initiatives that Blizzard should be taking to reduce the

repetitiveness of overwatch gameplay not only to improve the game as a whole but

the overwatch League which is definitely a very profitable area for overwatch as

a franchise if I fortunately continues this trend of ultra dominant team comps

throughout stages it'll definitely affect the performance of the league

continuing on into season 2 and season 3 and further on after that

but anyway that's been today's video now I'm not the best at this style of video

so if I said anything wrong or you disagree please drop a comment down

below but don't be quick to flame just try and understand where I'm coming from

and I'll definitely try it and understand where you're coming from I'm

not an expert at this by any means but this is something that I just felt when

I was watching the opening day and I really wanted to make a video about it

because I just didn't really enjoy the opening day as much as I did with the

first season so maybe that's just me but that's kind of the experience that I've

seen other people having - if you guys enjoyed this video drop a like and if

you guys want to see more overwatch related videos from tips and tricks to

twitch highlight videos get subscribed so that you never miss an upload you can

also follow us on instagram twitter and discord to join the Blitzer guides

community but anyway I hope you guys enjoyed this one have a nice day my name

is Nate and this was Blizzard guides.

Ashley Cole goal celebration: This is what Derby star really cared about when scoring - Duration: 3:05.

Cole returned to English football last month when agreeing a short-term deal with Derby

The former England left-back had been plying his trade in the MLS. Cole agreed to join former Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard at Derby and made his second appearance off the bench today

And the Champions League winner wasted little time making an impact on English football once again as he headed home for Derby in their FA Cup clash at Brighton today

But it was what Cole did after the goal that will have delighted Rams fans the most

The former Arsenal defender headed home at the back post with just nine minutes remaining at the Amex Stadium

Derby County were 2-0 down at the time and chasing the game. But Cole refused to celebrate his goal until a team-mate had grabbed the ball from the net and delivered it back to the centre-circle

Derby laboured to secure an equaliser after Cole's goal and eventually slipped out of the FA Cup for this season, losing 2-1 on the south coast

Not that manager Lampard will be too perturbed about dropping cup games from his schedule

Derby are chasing promotion this season and sit seventh in the Championship. Lampard has overseen a strong first half to the campaign and signed Cole last month to boost his side's defensive options

As for Brighton, manager Chris Houghton is delighted to have made it into the quarter-finals

"Overall I am very happy, but we are through and that is the most important thing," he said

"We made hard work of it in the end. We were good in the first-half and should have made more of those opportunities

"I knew the squad is stronger than last season, we have got good competition for places

We have had a bad week with minor injuries, made a bit weaker going into game. Hope Locadia's injury is not too bad, it didn't look good

"You can always dream [about winning the cup]. The reality is it is normally one of the top six that wins the competition

For the likes of ourselves it is about going as far as we can. To get to quarter-finals is a big thing for the club

"We are having a difficult time in the Premier League, that has seen us drop a bit from a comfortable position

We need all the positivity from today."

Klopp on Brewster plans & why youngster is now 'a proper man' - Duration: 3:00.

Jurgen Klopp believes Rhian Brewster's successful rehabilitation has helped him become "a proper man" at Liverpool

The Reds teenager was earmarked to make his debut at some point this season before a serious ankle injury in January 2018 left the 18-year-old with a lengthy recovery process to negotiate

Thirteen months after the damaging setback, Brewster is back in training and spent most the week with Klopp's first team out in Marbella on a warm-weather training trip as they geared up for Tuesday's visit from Bayern Munich in the Champions League

Klopp has been impressed by how his young forward has handled being sidelined for so long and is delighted to see Brewster back on the pitch

"When long-injured players start training, very often you see little changes in their movements," he told Liverpoolfc

com .  "At the beginning that was the case with him as well. But now it's good and now the steps will be much quicker, the longest part of the rehab is now over and that changed everything

"The boy can go out on the pitch not only to smell it. Being around the boys and doing similar things - or even the same things - changed everything, especially for a young boy like Rhian

Video Loading Video Unavailable Click to play Tap to play The video will start in 8Cancel Play now  "He grew as a person in that time and physically as well; he is a different stature when you look at him

Now he is a proper man. When he got injured, he was a boy. All will be good."   Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played a key role in helping his less experienced Liverpool team-mate over the past 10 months as he went through the motions of his own return from a serious knee injury

The two Reds players have become close away from the pitch and Klopp detailed the impact Oxlade-Chamberlain had on Brewster during their regular gym sessions together at Melwood

He added: "Of course, with a long rehab together with Ox, you cannot have a better lead into the team than Ox because he is pretty close with everybody

"That helped him. He is a good friend with Rhian and being a good friend with Ox is a nice thing

Liverpool's video of Wijnaldum's highlights this season is so good it's gone viral - Duration: 3:22.

Liverpool's season is reaching a 'make or break' stage.  Jurgen Klopp's side face Bayern Munich on Tuesday in their Champions League last-16 first leg

They then travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United, needing a point to put them back to the top of the Premier League

With just 12 matches remaining in the league campaign, they will need all of their important players to step up and be counted

Obviously, that includes the big names such as Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and the front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino

But throughout the course of the campaign, there's another player that has emerged as one of Liverpool's most important players - Georginio Wijnaldum

The Dutchman quietly goes about his business and, when he's not in the side, he's sorely missed

But because he doesn't really really score or assist regularly, he's often overlooked

But to ensure he gets the praise he deserves, Liverpool's official Twitter account decided to upload an appreciation video of Wijnaldum's best bits from this season

Captioned "Gini is boss!" the 2:37 video has captured just how good Wijnaldum has been and has been retweeted more than 3,000 times and 'liked' by more than 20,000 followers

WATCH: GINI IS BOSS  Check it out:  Take a bow, Gini.  Even his teammate and compatriot Van Dijk enjoyed the video and reacted on Twitter

If you didn't already realise how important Wijnaldum is to Liverpool, club legend Phil Thompson insisted that he "should be the first name on the team sheet" for Klopp

"He's one of the unsung heroes of this Liverpool side," Thompson said of Wijnaldum, per the Liverpool Echo

"I've told a lot of people… we had one player Ray Kennedy, fans were forever complaining about him, but we knew how good he was

Kidney problems: Cassia is a must use essential oil! - Duration: 3:39.

- Welcome, My Oil Lab, to cassia.

I'm Dr. Jeff, this is my beautiful wife, Megan.

Now, if you love cassia, if you love cinnamon,

put a heart,

hit us with a heart, - Yeah.

- hit us with a like and we wanna see

as many of those as possible.

But cassia is an incredibly unique essential oil,

however, most of you have been using it

for your entire lives, because actually 90%

of what is imported into the United States

labeled as cinnamon is actually cassia.

It's one of the oils that was used for anointing

in the Bible, and it's the oldest spice known to mankind.

- Interesting. - Mhm.

So, it's also the sister spice to cinnamon,

which makes total sense,

although it's its own plant

and distilled from the bark of its plant,

and it comes all the way from Indonesia.

Now, it has a very warming, spicy aroma and flavor to it,

and it completely reminds me of the holidays

whenever we diffuse it.

- Yeah, cassia and cinnamon

are two completely different plants,

but they're both distilled from the bark

of the plant, cinnamon from the cinnamon bark

of the cinnamon tree,

and cassia from the bark of the cassia shrub.

- Mhm.

- So very, very different chemistry,

but the taste and the aroma

- Almost same, yeah. - is almost identical.

Now, what makes this oil so unique and so amazing is

80% of this oil is trans-Cinnamaldehyde,

an aldehyde molecule.

Aldehydes are responsible for the aroma

in what we smell when we use an essential oil

making trans-Cinnamaldehyde no different,

but this particular molecule

supports the health and wellness of our kidneys.

Now, there's a biomolecular pathway

that when that pathway is activated,

it leads to our kidneys becoming dysfunctioned.

And cassia is the best oil

to support our kidneys

for that situation,

and what makes this oil also very powerful is

trans-Cinnamaldehyde is an incredibly calming molecule

for our nervous system.

So, you can actually use it to relax, to calm down,

and chill out at the end of the day.

However, don't put it on your face

(woman laughing)

like I did one time,

because your face will turn completely red

and start burning,

because it's an incredibly warming molecule.

Because of that, it's a great oil

for supporting our immune system,

but just keep it off your face.

- Yeah, if you do apply it topically,

which sometimes you might want to for a warming massage,

you are absolutely gonna use a fractionated coconut oil

or whatever you choose to dilute this oil with.

Now, my favorite way to use cassia,

and if you're looking for a great way

to have an internal cleanse

or support your digestive system just a little bit more,

add three drops of cassia

and three drops of lemon essential oil in a veggie cap,

take that internally with a full glass of water,

do it every day,

it's amazing. - Mhm.

- It's just wonderful.

And now, if you diffuse cassia,

again, it reminds me of the holidays,

so this is one that I always pick to diffuse

around Thanksgiving and Christmastime,

but that aroma of cassia can promote feelings of excitement

and arousal as well.

So, Valentines Day is coming up and

- So, maybe, I don't know, cassia

- Might be a good choice. - is a myrrh.

- Yeah, yeah. - Yeah, wonderful.

If you find value in this video, please like it, share it.

Comments are amazing,

because comments on how you love to use the oil

help everybody else watching this

- Mhm. - Get more ideas

of how they can benefit from plant-based medicine

and essential oils.

We love you guys, and we'll see you next video.

Another American is arrested in Moscow . prominent investor is accused of fraud Los Angeles Times

A prominent American investor with business ties in Russia since the early 1990s has been detained on suspicion of fraud in a case that is likely to shake a Moscow business community already reeling from the countrys uncertain investment climate.

Michael Calvey, the founder and senior partner of the private equity firm Baring Vostok Capital Partners, was detained Thursday evening. Russian media reported that five other employees from the firm were detained on Friday.

An investigator with the Basmanny court in Moscow said Calvey is suspected of embezzling 2.5 billion rubles, or about dollar 37 million, from the Vostochny Bank, of which Baring Vostok has a controlling stake, the Russian Interfax news agency reported.

Baring Vostok said in a statement released to Russian news agencies that the charges were related to a dispute among Vostochny Bank shareholders and would not affect its investment activities. According to its website, Baring Vostok has managed dollar 3.7 billion in investments in the former Soviet Union since 1994.

Calvey, 51, has been a central figure among foreign investors in Russia since then, starting the investment firm in the early days of Russias transition to capitalism after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

While other investors sank large sums into Russias lucrative oil and gas sectors, which were dominated by government ownership, Baring Vostok focused on technology, retail and telecoms. Calvey invested heavily in Yandex, the Russian search engine giant that has spun off into various other applications under the same brand. Baring Vostok sold its remaining shares in Yandex three years ago, bringing huge profits to the investment fund.

Calveys detainment sent shock waves through Moscows business community Friday, with immediate comparisons drawn to U.S. born British fund manager Bill Browder, who was also a prominent name among foreign investors in the chaotic early days of Russias capitalism. Browder tweeted that Calveys arrest should be the final straw for investors in Russia.

The arrest of Mike Calvey in Moscow should be the final straw that Russia is an entirely corrupt and univestable country. Of all the people I knew in Moscow, Mike played by their rules, kept his head down and never criticized the government.

Browder supported Russian President Vladimir Putin when the former KGB officer took office in 2000, promising to clean up corruption and bring oligarchs in line with the law. Browder invested in state run companies, including gas giant Gazprom, and advocated for exposing corruption.

He ran afoul of the Kremlin in the late 2000s, when he and his lawyer, , began investigating a tax fraud scheme involving state owned companies. Russian security agents raided Browders Hermitage Capital Management. The state seized the investment company and banned Browder from the country. Magnitsky was arrested and thrown in jail, where he later died after being beaten and denied medical care.

Browder, who left Russia and is now a fierce Putin critic, championed passage of , a U.S. law that sanctions Russian human rights violators. Russia has placed Browder on the Interpol wanted list.

In a meeting with President Trump in Helsinki last July, Putin suggested that he would allow special counsel Robert S. Mueller IIIs team access in Russia to investigate allegations of interference in the 2016 presidential elections to allow Russian intelligence permission to conduct an investigation in the U.S.

For instance, we can bring up Mr. Browder, Putin said.

Calvey is a former Salomon Bros. banker and also worked for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He holds a seat on the board of the Atlantic Council, a think tank in Washington that has been critical of Putins authoritative governance and annexation of Crimea.

The detentions come at a time when foreign investors have sought to sell off their Russian holdings amid market uncertainty around sanctions and worsening relations between Moscow and the West. Another American, Paul Whelan, was on espionage charges. His attorney said Whelan was carrying documents that . Whelans family said he was in Moscow to attend a wedding.

After hearing of Calveys arrest, Kirill Dmitriev, the chief executive of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, a government investment fund, told a Russian news agency that he would personally vouch for the American investor.

I am ready to provide personal guarantees for Michael Calvey and believe that he did a lot for attracting foreign investment in Russia and helped many Russian companies to grow and mature, he told the Tass news agency in Germany, where he was attending the Munich Security Conference. Dmitriev said he knew Calvey and the team of Baring Vostok as highly professional investors, committed to the highest ethical standards accepted in the investment community.
