Company tax cuts on hold for businesses with turnover above $50 million
The Federal Government has conceded it cannot convince the Senate this week to make more cuts to company tax.
Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said the Government would try again when Parliament resumes in August to pass tax cuts for businesses with turnover above $50 million.
"Despite our best efforts to secure majority support in the Senate for our proposed business tax cuts, we have not yet been able to secure the necessary support," Senator Cormann said.
The Government is four votes short of the number it needs to reduce the company tax rate for larger businesses.
Last week Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the company tax cuts would be put to a vote in the Senate this week.
But today, the last sitting day before the Parliament leaves for its winter break, Senator Cormann said it would be deferred so negotiations could continue.
"We need more time to make our arguments to our colleagues on the Senate crossbench," Senator Cormann said.
He moved to put pressure on the two One Nation senators who are not backing the full company tax cut plan.
Senator Cormann pointed to recent opinion polls showing that more than 60 per cent of One Nation voters in the Queensland seat of Longman supported the full company tax cut plan.
"More One Nation voters in Longman are supporting a lower, globally more competitive business tax rate than Liberal voters," he said.
He insisted the Government was still fully committed to its company tax cut plan.
Senator Cormann declared the five upcoming by-elections a referendum on which party has the better economic plan.
He took a swipe at Labor leader Bill Shorten's decision to announce Labor would repeal the existing cuts for companies with turnover up to $50 million.
"You have an opportunity to send Bill Shorten a message.
If you do not support his plan for higher taxes that will make you worse off, vote for the Liberal candidate in Braddon and in Longman," Senator Cormann said.
Despite calling it a referendum, Senator Cormann said the Government would still try again to pass the cuts even if Labor won the by-elections.

"It is those moments when players' individual qualities come through. "We went out to win against a powerhouse in modern football and we came up short

"We pressed high and in the second half we tried to take risks . But it's very difficult to play such an open game against such a football powerhouse like Brazil

We had our chances but we were punished," Krstajic added. Serbia did indeed have their moments and put Brazil under concerted pressure before Silva's strike from a Neymar corner after 68 minutes put the result beyond them and freed the Brazilians up to dazzle and tease with their possession
But Brazil's defence had rarely in truth looked more than mildly troubled, a fact Krstajic acknowledged "When you're defending, you have to be disciplined," he said
"And this just shows how powerful Brazil really is." While Brazil go on to be -- again -- one of the favourites for the World Cup in Russia, Serbia head home from their first major international tournament since the 2010 World Cup
"The players gave their all," said Krstajic, a former international defender who was promoted to coach from assistant when Slavoljub Muslin was sacked last October after leading the side to qualification for Russia
"We came to the World Cup to show our true colours after eight years of missing out on major tournaments," he said
"We can be very satisfied with our performance," he went on, highlighting the toll taken on his players by heavy schedules for their clubs over the preceding season
The turning-point of their campaign, however, after an opening 1-0 win over Costa Rica was the 2-1 defeat by the Swiss after leading before conceding a winner in the last minute to Xherdan Shaqiri
"We knew they were a tough opponent," Krstajic said. "What happened happened. We lost 2-1

Brazilian Versace model sues California Embassy Suites for BED BUGS - Duration: 4:21.
A Brazilian model is suing an Embassy Suites hotel in California after claiming her room was infested with bed bugs that left her body covered in bites and welts
Sabrina Jales St Pierre, who has worked for the likes of Victoria's Secret, Versace, and Valentino, said she noticed the bed bug bites on her very first night
. 'Eventually she was massacred by bites covering pretty much her entire body,' Brian Virag, the model's attorney, told the Palm Springs Desert Sun
. She is seeking an unknown amount of monetary and punitive damages. Virag claims St Pierre has had 'nightmares about the experience' and continues to experience 'psychological trauma and fear of bed bugs today'
'This was especially traumatic for Sabrina because her body is her work, so this severely affected her work and her career,' he added
'She had to continue working during the hotel stay, but the bite marks all over her body made her feel embarrassed, ashamed, and humiliated
' Virag, who specializes in bed bug cases, has claimed that St Pierre's bites were among the worst he has seen in nearly a decade
He added that the model had to seek medical attention for the bites 'for an extended period of time'
Meanwhile Carlos Mendoza, the Palm Desert hotel's general manager, claims no evidence of bed bugs were ever found
On the day St Pierre reported the bites, Mendoza said the hotel's chief engineer and housekeeping manager investigated the room for bed bugs
When none were found, he said the hotel had an outside pest control company perform a second investigation that also did not find bed bugs
'We did all the proper protocols and found no evidence,' he said. 'Now we have to go through the lawsuit to defend the reputation of the hotel
' Mendoza said that the hotel still agreed to dry clean St Pierre's clothes because 'the comfort and health and safety of our guests is most important'
