Prince Louis christening date: When is royal baby christening? Why is it important date? - Duration: 2:23.

A long, long time ago, long before many of you were born, when I was a teenager,

there was a very popular song by

The Coasters called "Charlie Brown He's a Clown."

I recently checked and on YouTube that

song has more than two million viewers - primarily because it had a couple of

lines that have lived on in history. One of which was Charlie crying,

"Why is everybody always picking on me?"

We Jews feel that way. Whenever we read of people

who, for some reason, have it in for the Jewish people or for the State of Israel,

we look at a United Nations, we look around the world at a European Union.

These are seemingly intelligent people, diplomats, understanding of the world

around them, and yet when it comes to Israel...

"Why is everybody always picking on me?"

I think we find an answer in this week's Torah portion where we come across

a prophet named Bilam. Bilam was the greatest prophet in the non-Jewish world.

He is compared to what we think of Moshe, as a prophet of the Jewish people. And

Bilam, this great giant of a man, was prepared to go and curse the Jewish people.

How come? Our rabbis tell us a very

strange thing about it. Bilam, they tell us, "Bilam suma b'eched b'ainov hayah,"

that Bilam was blind in one eye. Very strange. I can understand if they

told us he was blind in both eyes; he had difficulty seeing.

But why they need to tell us he was blind in one eye? And some rabbis

interpret this to mean that when Bilam looked at the rest of the world he

always saw it through his good eye. But when he looked at the Jewish people, for

whatever reason, he had a blindspot. There have been lots of Bilams down

through history: Voltaire and Martin Luther, and in our time,

countless intellectuals, seemingly smart people. Why do they get it so wrong when

it comes to the Jewish people? Blind in one eye, a blindspot for the Jews.

If we Jews are smart we'll always keep both eyes open.
