- A reading from the holy Gospel according the Mark.
- [Congregation] Glory to you O lord.
- When Jesus had crossed again in the boat
to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him
and he stayed close to the sea.
One of the synagogue officials named Jarius came forward.
Seeing him, he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly
with him saying, "My daughter is at the point of death.
"Please, come lay your hand on her that she may
"get well and live."
He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him
and pressed upon him.
There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for 12 years.
She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors
and spent all she had.
Yet, she was not helped, but only grew worse.
She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him
in the crowd and touched his cloak.
She said, "If I but touch his cloak, I shall be cured."
Immediately her flow of blood dried up.
She felt in her body that she was healed
from her affliction.
Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out of him,
turned around in the crowd and asked,
"Who has touched my clothes?"
But his disciples said to Jesus, "You see how the crowd
"is pressing upon you, and yet you asked who touched me?"
And he looked around to see who had done it.
The woman, realizing what had happened to her,
approached in fear and trembling.
She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth.
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you.
"Go in peace and be cured of your affliction."
While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue
officials' house arrived and said,
"Your daughter has died.
"Why trouble the teacher any longer?"
Disregarding the message that was reported,
Jesus said to the synagogue official,
"Do not be afraid, just have faith."
He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside
except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.
When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official,
he caught sight of a commotion.
People weeping and wailing loudly.
So, he went in and said to them,
"Why this commotion and weeping?
"The child is not dead, but asleep."
And they ridiculed him.
Then he put them all out.
He took along the child's father and mother,
and those who were with him,
and he entered the room where the child was.
He took the child by the hand and said to her,
"Tallithacoom," which means, "Little girl,
"I say to you, arise!"
The girl, a child of 12,
arose immediately and walked around.
And they were utterly astounded.
He gave strict orders that no one should know this,
and said that she should be given something to eat.
The Gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
- My friends, our Gospel passage
is kind of a narrative sandwich
made out of two stories woven together.
It begins how, with a desperate father,
a leader of a synagogue, pleading to Jesus
to come heal his sick daughter.
And we hear how this story is interrupted
with an encounter that Jesus had with a woman
who has been ill for 12 years
with a chronic bleeding condition.
And in the midst of 100 people grasping at Jesus,
Jesus feels a powerful connection.
The woman believes that if she just touches his cloak,
she will be healed.
And with everybody elbowing Jesus,
he asks, "Who touched me?"
And in effect, the disciples, they responded,
you gotta be kidding me, Jesus.
Who touched you, you're surrounded by this huge crowd.
Everyone has their hands on you.
No, the disciples, they didn't laugh out loud.
But in a way, they don't seem
to take Jesus seriously, either.
In spite of their disbelieving comments,
Jesus heals this faithful woman.
Some mourners come from the house,
and they tell the father that his daughter has died.
Now, there is no point in having Jesus to come and heal her,
because she has passed away.
Now, when Jesus tells the crowd that she's not dead,
but only sleeping,
they laugh at him.
Right in front of everybody.
So, these mourners, they don't take Jesus seriously, either.
Why should they?
They've all had an experience of death in their life.
They know what happens.
Death is an all too frequent and unwelcome intruder
into the homes of the young and the old alike.
They knew this little girl was dead,
and so what could this Jesus guy possibly do?
Well, my friends, with God all things are possible.
And in a moment, God is about to prove them dead wrong.
So, in spite of the ridicule, Jesus, he goes into the house
and he restores the little girl to life.
The top and the bottom of this narrative sandwich
is the story of this child.
And the inside is the healing of the bleeding woman.
Now, at first glance,
we might think that these two stories are unrelated.
Until Mark (coughs), excuse me.
At the end of this passage, kinda almost an afterthought,
he tells us, oh, yes, by the way,
this little girl, she was 12 years old.
Suddenly we sense something more is going on.
There's more here than these two little simple stories
sandwiched together.
The woman, she has been sick for 12 years.
And so, we can start looking for other connections.
Jesus, he addressed this woman as daughter.
And you might say that Jesus turns everything upside down
in the life of the afflicted, and even in the realm
of the dead to restore these two women to the abundant life.
Two needy outsiders.
They become daughters of God.
And the number 12 stands out as a kind of a sign here,
that there is abundant life in Jesus.
This interwoven story clues us in that Jesus,
he's in the world and he's at loose,
and he has this power to restore life.
Abundant life to everyone.
And in the end, those who doubt it,
those how laughed, they were left speechless and amazed.
The story of Jesus healing a dead girl
and a woman who was sick,
presents a simple Gospel message:
Through divine power, Jesus is victorious over death.
The fact, of course, lies at the center of the Gospel.
Because Jesus lives, we live also.
His life can be ours.
A woman, good as dead,
a girl, dead,
both given life.
Both rescued from their bondage.
In these two miracles, Jesus announces the good news
of the coming of the Kingdom.
The day has come for God to gather His people to Himself.
To bless him with His presence for all eternity.
Life in all of it's fullness
is our gift.
Yet, the question is: How to access this grace
of life eternal?
Life in all of it's fullness.
The answer is a simple one:
Freedom from the bondage of death is ours
wholly through Jesus Christ.
In our present, shadowy existence,
all we need to do is to hold his hand.
To trust him, to rely on Jesus
so that we can confidently proclaim,
like our Psalmist,
I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
I believe in one God--
- [Congregation] The Father almighty.
Maker of Heaven and Earth.
Of all the things visible and invisible.

was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and become man.

and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into Heaven and is seated
at the right hand of the Father.
