Sewing Tutorial for Creations by Michiè #107 | Banded Boy Bubble - Duration: 8:08.
hey everyone, here is my tutorial for the creations by michie pattern number 107. There
are two collar options, and a third variation that omits the collars all together. Regardless
of the collar you chose, you should be able to follow this tutorial to put the bubble
together. So if you decide to do the pointed collar like I did, you'll have four of these
to cut out. If you did the rectangular collar, you'll have two, and if you didn't do
a collar, well… you can skip those pieces. Now if you want to embellish your collar,
I'd recommend doing that before you cut out your pieces. If you are doing suspenders,
you'll cut out two of those pieces. Then you'll have one front piece cut on the fold
and I cut little notches where those tucks are going to go later on both at the top of
the tuck and bottom of the tuck. Then you'll cut two back pieces, and I notch where that
facing is going to fold under later on. Then you'll have two sleeves, one front bubble
bottom cut on the fold as well as one back bubble bottom cut on the fold.
Now something that I'm doing special with this outfit is using this bit of lace to make
suspenders as well as to embellish the sleeves. You'll see what I mean later in the video,
and as always, everything is linked below in the description box.
So to get started, I first put the collar pieces together, and if you're skipping
the collar, then just move onto the next step (time stamps are in the description box).
Regardless of which collar you're doing, you'll put the collar pieces right sides
together and sew around the outer edges (so not the edge for the neckline) with a 5/8"
seam allowance. Then trim up the seam allowance and corners before you turn your collar right
sides out. And I like to use this little pointer tool to push those corner into a nice, neat
point. It's linked below. After ironing my collar down, I moved onto
those tucks in the front of the shirt. To make each tuck, I match up the notches on
top and bottom of that tuck. Then I iron everything into place and sew straight down from one
pair of notches to the next pair of notches. And I just continued that process, although
I gained some help along the way… and somehow, I forgot about those suspenders before I did
the French seams. So some of the footage may not be coherent, but here are the steps you
should take… If you want to put in the suspenders, then
you can fold the fabric in half lengthwise, sew it together, and then turn the suspender
right sides out as directed by the pattern. Instead, I use this lace as the front of the
suspender and the fabric as the back. So with right sides together, I sewed down each side
of the lace and then used a safety pin to turn the suspender right sides out.
Then you'll baste the suspenders in place where you'll like them before joining the
shoulders of the shirt together with a French seam.
Since I got distracted by my helper, I ripped the stitches for the second part of the French
seam so I could place my suspenders and attach them in the second pass of the French seam,
if that makes sense. Then I basted the bottom of the tucks so they
were facing away from the center front of the shirt, and continued to baste the bottom
of each suspender. After my little helper ironed all of that,
then I moved onto the back of the shirt. I ironed under about ¼" of an inch and then
folded over that until it lined up with the notches.
Then I attached the collar to the shirt. First I marked the 5/8" of an inch point on each
collar. This helps when you go to line up the collar on your shirt so you make sure
the collar doesn't have any gaps where you're going to sew. And then I sewed the collar
in place. Finally, I took a two-inch wide bias strip
and folded that in half and gave it an ironing. I lined up the raw edges of the bias band
with the raw edges of the collar, making sure I had some overhang on the back of the shirt.
Then I sewed the bias band onto the collar. I never measure these bias strips, I just
make them longer than they need to be so I can trim them up afterward. I find that the
easiest method. So then the pattern calls for understitching this band down by your
machine. And while yes, most of those stitches will be covered by the collar, I'm going
to hand sew this down. Especially for a fancier garment like this. If it were a play garment,
then maybe I would be more tempted to machine sew it… but like I say, it's sewing, you
do you. Oh, but either method, make sure you fold those edges under and inside the band
like so. Okay, moving onto those sleeves… if you
want to embellish them at all, do that now before attaching them. I'm embellishing
with that same lace from before and I have a detailed video on how to attach entredeux
to flat fabric that I'll link below. From there, I folded the raw edge of the sleeve
up twice until it was at the bottom of the entredeux lace. I'll hand sew this folded
edge into place. And alright, we are making progress now..
onto the bubble bottom. So I took the bubble back piece and cut down the center so I could
make a placket. I have two methods on making a placket, and I'll link both below.
After the placket was done, I sewed the bubble back to the bubble front at the side seams
using French seams. Then I put two rows of gather stitches in
the bubble around the waist – one row on either side of where those permanent stitches
are going to go. The idea is that having two rows helps keep your gathers from going crooked
when you sew on top of them. So then I took the waist band and folded it
in half and ironed that down. Then I stitched on each end of the waist band. After turning
the waist band right sides out and poking the corners out, I gave it a good ironing.
Then I sewed the waist band onto the shirt from one center back to the other center back.
Next I adjusted the gathers on the bottom of the bubble until they were evenly distributed
and the length of the waist band. I pinned the bubble bottom to the waist band/shirt
combo and sewed from one center back all the way around to the other center back. Then
I trimmed up that seam and zigzagged over it. Honestly, I'm not entirely thrilled
with the construction of this seam, and I have an idea that I want to try in the future,
but this works for now. Anywho, after pressing that seam downwards,
I moved onto the crotch. First I turned that raw edge up about ¼" of an inch, gave it
an ironing, and folded it up again until it was flush with those leg openings. After stitching
on top of that, then I moved onto folding up the leg openings. First about a ¼" of
an inch and then again another ¼". That creates a casing and then I stitch that casing
down starting from one point to the other point, if you will.
Then I cut a piece of elastic to the appropriate size – reference the pattern or your little
one – and then thread it through the casing using a safety pin. When the end of the elastic
gets to the start of the casing, then sew that side down before continuing to pull the
elastic through… and once the elastic is popping out the other side, then sew that
side down. After putting snapsetter snaps in the crotch,
hand sewing buttons/snaps combo to close the back, and doing that hand finishing work,
then I had this completed garment. I need to get in the habit of shortening these Creation
by Michie patterns, since they all seem to run long, but otherwise, I think it's quite
adorable. I hope this video was helpful. If you have

Sewing Tutorial for a Perfect Tea Party Heirloom Birthday Dress - Duration: 9:21.
hey everyone, here is how I made Audrey's second birthday dress. It's a bodice dress
with long sleeves, and to create that, I used a combination of the bodice dress pattern
by Collars, Etc (which I know is out of print, so I will link a similar cut below if I can
find one), but any bodice dress pattern will work. The long sleeves are from Children's
Corner Ruthie, but again, any long sleeves will work here.
So if you'd like to embellish the bodice, do that before cutting out your pattern piece.
I did cutwork for the first time, so don't look too closely, and then I cutout the bodice
front. All in all, you'll have two bodice fronts
cut on the fold, as well as two bodice back pieces cut on the fold, and the collars, etc
pattern puts darts in their bodice back, I think at this age, it's fine either way
so don't stress if your pattern doesn't have darts, but if yours does have darts,
I like to put little notches where those are located. Then I've got two long sleeves
cut with that CC Ruthie pattern. Again, I put notches to mark the front, back, and middle
of the sleeve. And finally, I've got this lace that I'm adding to the dress. Oh, and
the skirt pieces are just rectangles – whatever size you'd like. I'll explain my sizing
later. So to do those darts, I just put a pin at
the top of the dart, gently pull the pin through the pattern piece, and then I fold the fabric
right sides together, lining up those notches and making sure the pin is in the middle,
if that makes sense. Then I just sew from the notches to where that pin was – generally
you can still see the whole that was left by the pin.
Then I put together my bodice pieces. You'll basically have a circle, with the back pieces
across from each other and then the front pieces across from each other. Join everyone
together at the shoulders. Then after I ironed out those four shoulder
seams, I put the fronts together and gave that an ironing, making sure those back pieces
and sleeve /armhole areas were all lining up nicely.
This is optional, but if you'd like to add a collar or some lace, trim, etc, then this
would be the time to do that – and having those ironed creases on those back bodice
pieces really helps in this optional step. So I'm adding some of this dotted swiss
lace, it's so lovely and is linked below along with everything else. I want it to have
a very gentle gather, so I'm cutting slightly more than 1.5x.
Then I'm running two rows of gather threads. You should know the drill by now if you've
seen my other videos – have two rows of gather threads (one on each side of those
permenate stitches), really helps to keep those gathers from going crooked when you
sew over top of them. So I just gather and adjust to my liking.
It is important to make sure that the raw edge goes off of the dress top like so…
that way it'll be enclosed into that seam. And then I just sew that lace onto the dress's
bodice. Then I flip the lining of the bodice so it's
right sides together with the bodice front and sew again, and I like to sew with the
previous stitches up so I can go right on top of those suckers.
Then I clipped the curves, trimmed up those corners, pushes out the corners with this
little tool, and after I gave that an ironing, I went back to understitch that seam. If you
are unfamiliar, a quick explanation of understitching is that is helps prevent your lining from
peeking back up at you. To do this, flip the entire seam to the lining side, and sew as
closely to the previous seam as possible. You won't be able to go all the way around
the neckline, but you can get close, and that's just fine.
So I gave the bodice an ironing and moved onto those sleeves.
I wanted to embellish the sleeves with some tucks. If you remember from my CC Ruthie video,
the sleeves are designed to be used with elastic at the wrist. I wanted something more elegant
for this look, so I'm doing fabric tucks. I'm guessing on Audrey's wrist size..
she's napping while I'm sewing, but I should have that written down..whatevs. I'm
trying to remember my thought process, but the whole sleeve width is 11" at the bottom,
I'm thinking her wrist is around 6" circumference. So I've got to take up maybe 4 inches since
that extra inch will go into the seam allowance. So I decide to make seven tucks, each ¼"
wide which means each tuck is taking up ½" in fabric, so that's 3.5 inches… which
is close enough to four inches in my book. This isn't rocket science people, and it
doesn't have to be. To make each tuck, I line up my marks, and
sew along that line. Simple as that. Oh, and to mark all of these, I'm using that frixion
heat pen – it's linked below. Because it's a heat activated pen, it just
erased with an iron. Sooo easy. And I ironed all of these tucks so they were pointing towards
the back. Then I took this little lace trim again and
sewed it straight along the sleeve cuff. I decided not to gather it, just personal preference.
Then I took a strip of fabric torn on the grain, folded that in half lengthwise, and
after giving it an ironing, I attached it to the sleeve cuff with Henry's help.
I trimmed up that seam slightly so when the band folds over, it just reached those machine
stitches. And if you've seen my previous videos, you can say it with me, I like to
save all my hand sewing until the end whenever possible, so for now, I'm just going to
iron over the band and move right on. Before attaching the sleeve, I just baste
the lining to the dress at that armhole. It's just one less thing to think about when you're
attaching the sleeve. Then I gather that sleeve top, again using
two rows of gather threads, but this sleeve only barely needed to be gathered to line
up with the dress, which was fine – I kinda lucked out since I was going for more of an
elegant look. So I gathered the sleeve to fit the armhole,
and then sewed the sleeves to the dress with right sides together. Then I trimmed up that
seam to about a ¼" of an inch and did a zigzag to enclose those raw edges, or yes,
you could use a serger instead. And you know, Henry was still helping… such a gentleman
;-) Then it was time to work on the skirt. Okay,
for the dimensions of my skirt, I wanted a full skirt, and since this fabric is on the
lightweight side of life, I did a full selvedge to selvedge edge piece for both the front
as well as the back of the skirt. And then the length was whatever… I think 12" long,
I can't remember, but that's not as important since you need to adjust yours to your little
one. But just fyi on that width, I went on the full side of life
So I gathered the top of the skirt, and sewed that onto the front of the dress. Be careful
not to catch the front lining into that seam – it'll be folded under and ironed down
later so it can be hand sewn into those machine stitches to hide those raw edges.
Before repeating the same thing to the back of the dress, you'll first need to put a
placket down the skirt center. I just fold the piece in half to find the center, ironed
over it, and used that crease mark as a guide when cutting for my placket. I have two methods
of putting a placket in and both are linked down below. I decided to do the continuous
placket method for this one, just fyi. So then I folded the right side of the placket
over, did those gather stitches, and then attached the skirt back to the back of the
bodice, again, making sure to keep that lining of the back of the bodice out of the way.
And we are almost done now. So making sure that both of those bodice lining edges are
still folded under, I put one side of the dress together and joined it using a French
seam. I have a detailed video linked below on how to do a French seam. I go from the
sleeve cuff all the way down to the bottom of the skirt.
This is optional, but if you want to add lace or trim to the bottom of the dress, now would
be the time to do that. I added this matching dotted swiss lace to hem the dress. I did
two rows of straight stitches like 1/8" apart, then trimmed up that seam, and ran
a zigzag over top of it. After pressing that seam towards the dress,
then I joined the other side of the dress using a French seam and that way those raw
edges of the lace are enclosed in the French seam – isn't that lovely??
So now it's a matter of doing that little bit of hand work and adding buttons, or snaps,
whatever floats your boat to close the back of the dress.
Then this was my finished garment, which was Audrey's dress for her second birthday.
She's two! Happy, happy birthday sweet girl. You are loved more than you will ever know
and I terish being able to make garments for you.

So we begin this class with a little illustrative story
in it, there's a new priest and he is concerned about his way of listening to confessions
and he wants an older priest to sit in on
and listen a little so he can give him some feedback.
So after a few rounds of confession, the older priest asked him to
come out of the confessional to give him some feedback, and he said:
"Why don't you try this: first, you know, cross your arms over your chest, you know"
he says, "and rub your chin with one hand" - the guy does this, so he's copying him
he goes: "Now say things like 'I see, yes, go on, yeah' and 'how did that feel?'"
- young priest does that and then the old priest says:
"Now don't you think that's a little bit better than
slapping your knee and saying "no kidding, what happened next?"

Actually I think the way the young priest is doing it actually sounds better, but...
So, it's fun and what it points to is how integral
listening is, how we listen to pretty much everything that happens in our life, it's
the listening, the inward listening that's so necessary
if we're going to be intimate with our inner life.
And then being able to listen to each other
for there to be a real touching, connecting, knowing...
And then for us listening into our larger world so rather than unreal others
we can sense the realness of humans and respond to what
our world needs, what our earth needs - listening to the earth.
And, in a spiritual way, it's that
deep listening into the very nature of who we really are;
the awareness, the love that's here. So listening is
pretty much at the center of much and when I
talk about it I often think of this
story I heard many years ago I'm gonna read you a bit of it
I share it now and then, it's a story about an African tribe and
the birth date of the child is counted not by
the days from when they're conceived, as some cultures do,
but rather from when the child was a thought in the mother's mind.
And that's when the child was truly conceived
because everything we do is out of mind, out of awareness.
And then, when the woman decides she's going to have a child,
that feeling fills her and she goes off sits under a tree by herself
and listens until she hears the song of the child that wants to come.
And then after she's heard that song she comes back to the man who'll be the child's father and teaches it
and they make love to physically conceive the child
some of the time they sing the song to the child and that's their way of inviting it.
And then, when the mother teaches the song she continues to teach the midwives
and the old women at the village so when the child arrives
those that are around her can sing the song to the child to welcome it.
And then as the child grows the other villagers are taught the child's song and if
it falls down, hurts its knee, someone picks it up and sings his song to it.
Or if it does some great thing like rites of
puberty as a way of honoring that person they sing the song and it goes that way through life.
Through marriage, the songs are sung together and finally when this child is ready to die
all the villagers know their song,
and so when they're lying they're ready to die they sing it
for the last time to that person.
So when I heard that, and whenever I kind of
reflect on it, and that kind of
it speaks to a deep level of attunement,
of listening past personalities, of listening to essence.
And it's a capacity of ours; each of us have this
capacity for deep listening and then we often have it blocked
and so that's what we'll explore...
So it feels, and I suspect many of you are
thinking the same way, that listening is is really really missing
in our contemporary society and that
the faster we move and the more contentious we are,
the louder and louder we, in some way try to communicate, and the less
actual listening is going on... And so as it's said
the more stress, the more mistrust, the less we listen.
You know, the tweeting goes out of control and, you know, you just hear
more and more condemnation and people trying to prove points and less
receptivity... From Will Rogers:
"A person in Congress gets up to speak, says nothing, nobody listens,
and then everybody disagrees - that's how it goes."
So these are noisy times and to have the message of listening to the song,
however we want to think of it, if we can start practicing that,
it does ripple out; it really does make a difference.
And for me a key understanding is that listening is not another
capacity on our checklist of good personhood, you know,
it's very profound, it really has to do with receptive presence.
How much can we stop doing and defending and grasping
and come into a quietness that lets us listen?
So we'll begin with a short reflection, if you will,
and if it helps you to close your eyes - it does for me -
please feel free...
I'd like to invite you to bring to mind someone you know
who you consider a really good listener.
For some, you might notice when I ask that it's quite a select few...
but sense someone that you feel is a really good listener.
And then as you consider that person, sense what is it that characterizes good listening
I mean let some words come to mind.
What qualities really characterize good listening?
What is it you pick up in the other person that lets you know they're really listening?
You can continue to consider this, but in a sense, these are all
expressions of presence, if you think about it:
space, you know... respect....
Presence - there's a respect in it.
Self-awareness, non-judging, interest...
For me when I'm with somebody and I can sense it's a real interest - that's listening.
Care, you know...
