Dad we have to leave for the carnival now, I think you can stay and say hello to your aunt
Sorry about all that dust. It was a long trip
Roland my dear
Tilly she was a funny-looking baby. So I'm a little shocked. I hope I'm not showing it on my phone. I'm amber

We'll be going then. See you after the carnival
Let's get out of here
Hmm Sofia dear not really dressed for this. Are you really? I'm sure I have something
Won and here we are. Oh
We're too late the Arabella orchard has moved again the orchard moved
That's a blank piece of paper oh but things aren't always as they seem
Sophia asked nicely and the map will show you the way now then we'll have to go through melodious meadow
Across gargantuan Gorge and there it is the orchard of the Arabella Apple
What's that plate of a breeze? I never knew this was here. It's beautiful
It's melodious the world's full of wonders waiting to be seen Oh
Quite sure through the meadow it said but it didn't say exactly how to get through the meadow
Okay
It's like a big maze if only we could see over the flowers then we know how to find our way out. Oh
Look here's a bridge
Doesn't seem too sturdy does it sure don't make rickety rope bridges? Okay, they used to
The only way to find out is to
Let me take a look I think I can help
First time hitching a ride on a giant visit you've done this before who hasn't no choice
There they are the Arabella Apple's
Beautiful I
Got it
Huh
Go on now be a good WOM based shoo you chew
It's not suing
You better get you why the same thing you've been doing all day long
You figured out a way to get through the flower maze bravely faced a giant and convinced him to help us across that gorge Wow
Looks like the wombeast cave is up
there
It's really steep. It sure is not even your jumping shoes can help us get up there
They sure could and we just need to pin the tail on the kite and there we go now
All we need is a breath of a breeze
That's the wombeast cave right there. Whoo, I'll never get there
Oh, mr. Wombeast, are you
It is kinda funny hey, wait a minute you speak wombeast I can speak to any animal because of my amulet
Well, you're wrong about me being funny. It's just not nice to take things from people higgledy-piggledy
You're right, but I'm really hungry and those apples are soaked
Don't tell me you've never had a family dinner. I don't have a family. You don't no
Don't maybe there is
Sophia I knew you could do it. Oh
Yeah, silly the pie looks great thanks for helping me bake it Sophia. You're welcome may I present
You've outdone yourself this time Tilly
Hmm and they had this big corn maze I thought we'd never get out. Sorry you missed it
Was it fun helping aunt Tilly? It was funner than fun. It was whiz-bang
All that baking must've made me hungry. Oh
Dear, where are my manners? Excuse me a toast to my dear sister and her outstanding apple
And leave some festival alright everyone it's time to rehearse for the leaf Song Festival
Here in the woods, er if the leaf song

I'm sorry kid, but I just can't let you sing tonight
I'm sorry crackle. You can still watch the festival with me
Yeah, but I wanted to be in the festival like all my other friends. I
Wish there was a way to get rid of my fire just for the day so I can sing in the festival with everyone else
hmm
Royal sorcerer has all kinds of magic spells. Maybe he has one that can make your fire go away for the day
What are we waiting for? Let's go ask him
Now crackle and I are just friends and she's having trouble with her fire it comes out when she doesn't want it to
Like that well your breathing dry take over the kingdom take over the kingdom take over the kingdom
Let's pie that spell
Crackle I really don't think you should let mr. Setser. Take away your fire. Are you kidding?
Of course I should but your fire is such a special part of you
Crackles ready for the spell so I see now step back and give me some room
Let's get back to the festival I've got some rehearsing to do
I am going to cast a spell that will cover the entire kingdom in forever frost a frost so slippery
No one will be able to get anywhere
Should we take it from the top okay, but since director Doug thinks I sounds so amazing
Maybe I should do the last part as a solo
Rehearsal
Hey what Chuck's quit chewing the scenery? Hey crackle, you sound pretty good when you're not scorching everything inside
I can't he doesn't ever fire anymore. Oh
Right, but you always roasted like veggies so perfectly
Well, I know but now we can sing together and that's even better now button up wormy things are about to get chilly
icy claws of winter frozen fingers crossed --kavitha hope
Where did all this frost come from and why is it blue I want to go back is
Whether we are having a perfect day to take another key
Light with me singing my song. How are you song? Oh, I better practice my solo
you can practice the whole song because I
Thank you, I nearly froze my wings off and there's only one way to melt it you need dragon fire. Is that all
Well, we got a dragon. All right here
What can't we just make it an ice show the leaf Song Festival?
Yeah, I don't think that's gonna work kid if we can't find a way to melt this frost
Yes, apologies your majesty the kingdom is frozen for miles of
Here we need to melt this ice
The only one who can do that as you crackle, get your fire back Mia needs you we all do
Covered in frost hey there Cedric crackle needs our fire back so she can melt 6o
Not afraid I lost it you want it. Yes, I put it somewhere now boink
I don't remember where they can't believe my fire is gone. I just wanted to sing and be part of the fun
And now the festival's cancelled and me is stuck in the ice and I could have saved everyone if I add my fire
It's not that bad right? It's pretty bad
I know it is but first we have to go back and find a way to help Mia. Oh poor Mia
She's probably a burnt sickle by now. Come on. What's the purple glowing thing? I think it's crackles fire my fire
Lower so I can grab it nice catch princess
Open the door. I don't know exactly how to do this. Neither do I but there's no time to waste
Tell me you got the fire worthy
Come on, Sophia. We've got to save Mia then defrost the rest of the kingdom
well, I
guess you'll be happy now rob you get to see I guess I was just so
Excited when the Dove told me I had a good voice that all I wanted to do was show it off
I didn't know I was being so rude
I'm sorry Mia
Sorry, okay. I have more melting to do shake those tail feathers I
Know you wanted to sing?
We're birds of a feather
Wherever we go
Sun or snow we always
So without any further ado
Hit it what not?
We are here in the woods y'all it's a song

Why the Winning Spelling Bee Word, 'Koinonia,' Is So Easy for Christians - Duration: 5:02.Why the Winning Spelling Bee Word, 'Koinonia,' Is So Easy for Christians
After the typical litany of obscure and clunky terms at this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee championships—bewusstseinslagen ousted one top competitor—the final word actually rang familiar to Christian viewers.
Koinonia was the winning word for the bee's champion, 14-year-old speller Karthik Nemmani.
A Greek word defined as "spiritual community," it's better known to believers as a term used to refer to Christian fellowship, or communion itself.
Karthik, who beat out more than 500 fellow spellers during the most competitive bee in history, said he knew the spelling of the final word as soon as the official pronouncer read it.
And so did many Christians who recognized the word from church life: It's been used to name coffee shops, youth groups, worship bands, retreats, summer camps, and other ministries.
"If you grew up evangelical in the 90s you can totally spell koinonia because you had a crush on the drummer for a youth group band by that name," joked author Rachel Held Evans on Twitter.
Christianity Today has reported on Koinonia Farms, an intentional community in Georgia that went on to launch Habit for Humanity, as well as Koinonia House, an aftercare program for previously incarcerated women.
Christians have adopted the word koinonia from the Greek New Testament, where it is translated as fellowship, communion, or partnership.
It's the word behind verses such as Acts 2:45, where the early church "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship," and Philippians 1:5, when Paul prays with joy of "partnership in the gospel." The late evangelical scholar John Stott preached on the term: That's the Greek word koinonia.
It comes from the adjective koinos that means "common." Koinonia bears witness to what we have in common and what we share as Christian men and women and young people.
It bears witness to two complementary truths.
First, koinonia expresses what we share in together, what we have received together, what we participate in together.
That is the grace of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
So the apostle John, at the beginning of his first letter, says, "Our fellowship [koinonia] is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ"… But koinonia also bears witness to what we share outward together—not only what we receive together, but what we give together. Koinonia is the word that Paul uses of the collection that he was organizing from the Greek churches for the benefit of the poverty-stricken churches in Judea.
And koinonikos, the adjective, means "generous." This year's spelling bee finals also included the word pseudepigrapha, which comes up in Christian scholarly circles to refer to non-canonical writings said to be authored by biblical figures.
(The speller aced that one too.) Koinonia is not the first Christian-tinged term to conclude the annual competition.
Back in 2009, the winning word was Laodicean, meaning indifferent or halfhearted.
It also shows up in the book of Revelation, which addresses the church of Laodicea.

Getting Geared Up! Packing for the State Championships - Duration: 8:59.hello gym rats we are officially less than three days out from my second ever
powerlifting meet and we wanted to check in with you all and kind of update you
on how things have been going in terms of training. if you're new here
or you're new to my channel you can check out my video that details and recaps how I did
my very first powerlifting meet, which was just over a couple of months ago.
The past couple weeks have been good, they've been very busy we peaked.
Tested some of my maxes and then you know how to very focused calculated deload
I've been hitting my cardio and also focusing on making weight um I actually
officially made weight a couple weeks ago. I was weighing in at a really good
point and then you know various things mainly um my system being a little bit
on the slower side, things have kind of fluctuated it's like just above where
they need to be and then back down so actually this is new to me being a
weight class athlete and that fluctuation while, it's normal
for walking around in everyday life it's kind of stressful as a power lifter and
part of the reason is I really want to compete as a 63 so I can try and get
that nationally qualified total so that's actually taking up more sort of
brain space and energy than I really thought it would but I think
everything's gonna be okay and I should weigh-in probably under where I need to be on Sunday.
Part of being you know three days out for me involves some
preparation making sure that I'm completely ready to go for the platform
making sure have my openers my coaches making sure he has a plan for all my
attempts but I'm packing my bag actually tonight a couple days before just to
make sure that I have peace of mind that I have everything I need and that I
won't be running around like a crazy person or having to wake up any earlier
that I need to the morning of the meet I have my trusty gym bag and just a quick
little funny story like that before I really got into power lifting and I was
doing more strength training and bodybuilding style workouts I didn't
need as much you know gear at the gym and I slowly started accumulating the
gear and I would bring it in like the most whack bags of all time like these
little tiny tote bags and like things would be spilling out and I still have
to like carry my belts and stuff and I think Joe was like getting tired of me
looking like a crazy person so he got me this lovely gym bag.
So the first thing we have it's not normally in my gym bag, but it will be on meet day is my
singlet I decided to go with the SBD Apparel one because it's all black and I
thought maybe would be a little more slimming
they're super fun outfits to wear also if anyone like me is not used to
training in shorts I found that these shorts were like a really nice length
and long enough so I was actually pretty comfortable in it
heard the USAPL rules you need a plain cotton t-shirt with no writing on it for
under your singlet so this is by Hanes it's men's small I could find also
required by USAPL are deadlifts socks so they're nice and tall they'll protect
my shins from any possible scraping of the bar I will only wear these on the
deadlift on the third lift they're also SBD because I guess I like matching want to look good.
While we're on the SBD train my knee sleeves this piece of
equipment I love to hate it absolutely makes my squat better just sort of the
extra support that they provide but they are so hard to get on and that is why I
have these crinkly hold plastic bags in my bag as well
so this is a little pro tip but these these absolutely will come in handy
putting on my knee sleeves especially I'm not having like leggings or pants on
which is how I normally would wear them this is part of my warm-up routine here
this is the hip circle by SlingShot, I always use this as part of my warmup
when I train so I of course will use it as part of my warm up on the competition
day before squats back to the SlingShot brand I have wrist wraps for the bench
pressed attempts I've stolen these from Joe to the point where now they feel
like they're mine so if SlingShot wants to send Joe
another pair of wrist wraps because I stole his we'd be grateful.
CHALK!!! I always have this in my bag and while you know chalk is usually provided at meets
can't hurt to have your own I noticed that my first meet the chalk
bin was a very popular location and I didn't need to crowd around it that goes in
the side pocket another pro tip so you don't get chalk all over your stuff.
My lifters, I have Adidas brand powerlifting shoes last but not least in terms of gear
My Inzer belt, a.k.a. torture device I am still very much getting used to training with a belt of
this thickness hopefully with a little bit more use it will start to break in
feel a little bit softer but this belt is also on the approved equipment list
for us APL and pretty badass so that is everything that I have in terms of gear
equipment I'll probably have like a sweatshirt on me just in case it's
really cold in there keep me warm but also I'm gonna show you some of the
supplements that I'm gonna take the day of the meet. The coach and I we plan
this out we talked about this so nothing is new it's all things that I'm used to
training with that I found have worked well for me so I have some creatine from
BPI and show the world which is a non-stim pre-workout from Run Everything Labs
I actually combine these two in the same shaker it tastes pretty good
the flavors are rainbow ice and sour blue pop or blue if you want to get
really technical but actually tastes pretty good together and flavors that
it's blue it's blue something I learned from my first powerlifting meet is I had
a shaker of this and I like chugged through it really quickly so I'm gonna
try harder to actually like stretch it out throughout the course as a meat this
time so I'm not having too much in my system I will also have a shaker of
onward from run everything labs ready to go this is the delicious watermelon
flavor it's meant to help you stay focused and with a powerlifting meet I
learned quickly that that's part of the game
making sure you stay focused you listen to those commands you know when you're
up you stick with your game plan you get your warmup rolling you don't forget you
put in your deadlift socks like I almost did so the Onwards is gonna help with
that and then I'm gonna bring some Gatorade powder this is Glacier Freeze
also blue flavor there's a pattern here blue I'm gonna bring this because I'm
not so sure how much water I'll get to consume the night before the meet I
guess it kind of just depends on where my weight is if I do need to rehydrate
you know this should help with the extra electrolytes. Oh hi Tarzan you
checking out mommy's powerlifting meet bag what do you think?
Unfortunately I cannot bring a Tarzan to the meet, although that would be fun for mom I
don't know how much fun Tarzan would have. Probably meeting you all
anyone who might be there so that is just about everything that I will bring
to the meet that day besides some solid food sources.
Last time I brought cereal and protein, donuts... I actually had a dream about Cheez-Its and
sour patch kids so, Joe doesn't know it yet but those may be coming too...
Thanks for hanging out with Tarzan and I while we reviewed some of the last
weeks of training and what goes in my meet day bag be sure to subscribe so you
can be one of the first to see the recap video of how I did. It's a big meet for me.
This is sort of my chance and shot at qualifying or attempting to qualify for
nationals and that is the plan. So if you subscribe you'll be the first to find
out how the plan went if you thought this video was interesting or cool
leave a comment or like and I'll check you guys soon

Democrats Freak As Trump Claims Major Victory For The 1st Time In Recorded History - Duration: 4:42.Democrats Freak As Trump Claims Major Victory For The 1st Time In Recorded History.
President Donald Trump just claimed a major victory, accomplishing something which has
never been done before in recorded history.
The Democrats, of course, are freaking out, as it is becoming more and more clear that
Trump will be reelected in 2020.
President Donald Trump started the month off right on Friday with an early morning tweet
touting the upcoming payroll numbers before their release.
"Looking forward to seeing the employment numbers at 8:30 this morning," wrote Trump,
unafraid of jinxing himself.
When the numbers were released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they did not disappoint.
In fact, according to the May 2018 jobs report, the economy added 223,000 jobs last month,
reducing the unemployment rate to 3.8 percent.
Broken down by race, the unemployment rate is 3.5 percent for whites, 5.9 percent for
blacks 2.1 percent for Asians, and 4.9 percent for Hispanics, which are among the lowest
rates on record for each group.
Unemployment has fallen to record lows since Trump took office, with last month's job
report showing an unemployment rate of just 3.9 percent — below what economists consider
"full employment."
Now, however, we have an even bigger breakthrough to report:
For the first time in recorded history, there is at least one job opening for every person
seeking a job.
Economists have been confirming that we are headed in the right direction for months.
"According to the latest data from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, there
were 6.55 million job openings in March.
In March, there were 6.59 million unemployed, meaning there are 1.01 unemployed workers
for every job," reported MarketWatch.
"In July 2009, just as the U.S. exited the Great Recession, there were 6.65 unemployed
people for every available job."
President Donald Trump has proven that he is absolutely committed to putting Americans
back to work and getting them off of welfare programs.
And, with unemployment numbers the lowest they've been in 17 years — most notably
among black Americans — food stamp participation is plummeting:
The number of food stamp dependent Americans hit a six-year low in President Donald Trump's
first year in office, reflecting an improving economy and falling unemployment, according
to a U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA) report.
An average of 42.2 million Americans participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP) program in 2017, which is an 11 percent decrease from 2013, when a record number of
people used food stamps, according to USDA.
"Federal spending for SNAP totaled $68.0 billion or 4 percent less than in the previous
fiscal year," USDA reported.
"This was also 15 percent less than the historical high of $79.9 billion set in FY
2013."
[Source: The Daily Caller]
The Democrats, of course, are not happy about these numbers.
They're in the business of trading handouts for votes.
With the entire country being put back to work, their sick scheme is unraveling right
before their very eyes, courtesy of Donald J. Trump.
Conservatives measure success not by how many people receive government assistance, but
by how many people who don't.
This is one of the key differences between those on the right and their leftist counterparts.
Democrats have labeled themselves the "Party of the People," mainly by giving away "free
stuff" in exchange for votes.
Republicans, however, know that none of these handouts are actually "free."
Someone is paying for them, and that "someone" happens to be the hard-working American citizen
who would rather put in a ten-hour day at the factory than live their life on the dole.
Moreover, conservatives realize that helping people become independent of the government
is real compassion.
By contrast, ensuring that entire demographics are beholden to a certain political party
for their welfare checks is quite honestly modern-day slavery.
what do you think about this?

Episode 1148 | Increasing Support For Native Americans Experiencing Homelessness - Duration: 12:41.>> THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO ARE HOMELESS EACH NIGHT IS
ON THE RISE ACROSS THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING RIGHT
HERE IN NEW MEXICO.
ACCORDING TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND
URBAN DEVELOPMENT, OUR STATE HAD A 20% INCREASE IN
REPORTED HOMELESSNESS LAST YEAR.
THAT'S COMPARED TO JUST ONE YEAR BEFORE IN 2016.
NEW MEXICO ALSO HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST RATES OF
HOMELESS VETERANS.
NOW, BEING HOMELESS CAN BE DANGEROUS.
IN 2014, TWO NAVAJO MEN WERE BRUTALLY BEATEN TO DEATH IN
ALBUQUERQUE, AND IN MARCH, A NAVAJO MAN WAS FATALLY SHOT
ON A STREET NEAR THE FREEWAY.
CORRESPONDENT ANTONIA GONZALES SITS DOWN THIS WEEK
WITH MEMBERS OF TWO GROUPS THAT ARE FOCUSING ON
HOMELESS NATIVE AMERICANS.
THEY SAY THAT BY HUMANIZING PEOPLE ON THE STREETS, IT
HELPS ADDRESS OTHER CONCERNS FOR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF
PEOPLE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING INSTABILITY IN THEIR
HOUSING.
>> JENNIFER DENETDALE IS A RESEARCHER AND COLLEGE
EDUCATOR AND SERVES ON THE NAVAJO NATION HUMAN RIGHTS
COMMISSION, AND WILL RIDING IS WITH FIRST NATIONS
COMMUNITY HEALTH SOURCE, AND THE ALBUQUERQUE NATIVE
AMERICAN HOMELESSNESS TASK FORCE.
THANK YOU BOTH FOR JOINING US TODAY.
>> THANK YOU.
>> JENNIFER, HOMELESSNESS CAN INCLUDE AND LOOK
DIFFERENT WAYS, INCLUDING TEMPORARY HOUSING WHERE
PEOPLE ARE WITH THEIR FAMILY OR FRIENDS, INCLUDING NATIVE
PEOPLE WHO MAY BE GOING BACK TO THEIR TRIBAL COMMUNITIES,
BACK AND FORTH.
CAN YOU TELL US WHAT HOMELESSNESS LOOKS LIKE
RIGHT NOW IN ALBUQUERQUE FOR THE NATIVE POPULATION?
>> WELL, I THINK THE NUMBER OF NATIVE PEOPLE WHO ARE ON
THE STREETS HERE IN ALBUQUERQUE, A FAIR NUMBER
OF THEM ARE NAVAJO, AND I THINK WE ALSO SHOULD
CONSIDER THAT MANY OF THEM OFTEN MOVE BACK AND FORTH
FROM THEIR COMMUNITIES ON THE NAVAJO NATION AND COME
INTO URBAN SPACES LIKE ALBUQUERQUE.
SO IT'S MORE OF A MOVING BACK AND FORTH.
>> WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE GREATEST THREAT FACING
NATIVE PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING ON THE STREETS?
>> WELL, THERE'S A NUMBER OF ISSUES THAT THEY FACE, AND I
THINK ONE OF THE ONES THAT I'VE SEEN, AS I'VE BEEN A
COMMISSIONER ON THE NAVAJO NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS
COMMISSION, IS REALLY THE AMOUNT OF VIOLENCE THEY
FACE, FIRST FROM RESIDENTS, THE RESIDENTS OF
ALBUQUERQUE, BUT ALSO FROM THE POLICE.
>> IN YOUR WORK, YOU ALSO LOOK AT OTHER RESERVATION
BORDER TOWNS.
HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGES WHEN IT COMES TO ADDRESSING THIS
ISSUE IN ALBUQUERQUE AND OTHER BORDER TOWNS?
>> I THINK THAT'S A QUESTION THAT IS NOW BEING ASKED ONCE
AGAIN, ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF THE MURDER OF RONNIE
ROSS, A NAVAJO MAN WHO WAS FROM SHIPROCK AND WHO WAS
MURDERED, SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES HERE IN ALBUQUERQUE IN
MARCH, AND PRIOR TO THAT, THERE WAS NATIONAL ATTENTION
TO THE KILLING OF ALLISON GORMAN AND KEE THOMPSON, AND
THAT WAS WHEN, ALSO, ONCE AGAIN WE HAD RAISED
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CONDITIONS THAT OUR
RELATIVES ON THE STREETS FACE.
AND SO WE CONTINUE AGAIN TO HAVE THOSE SAME QUESTIONS.
>> AND WILL, WITH YOU AND THE TIME THAT YOU'VE BEEN ON
THE STREETS TALKING TO PEOPLE, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE
CONTRIBUTING FACTORS THAT YOU HEARD FOR THEM BEING
UNSHELTERED AND NEEDING SERVICES?
>> DURING MY TIME AS AN OUTREACH COORDINATOR, WE
WOULD GO OUT TO THE STREETS AND HAND OUT FOOD TO
HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS.
ONE THING I SAW WAS A LOT OF PEOPLE CAME TO TOWN LOOKING
FOR WORK, AND THEY MAY HAVE BEEN WORKING FOR A FEW
WEEKS, BUT ANYONE CAN BE HOMELESS.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE.
MAYBE MOM GETS SICK, SHE HAS TO TAKE CARE OF THE
CHILDREN, A COUPLE MISSED DAYS AT WORK, AND THEN SHE'S
AT RISK OF BEING HOMELESS, OR SHE GETS EVICTED.
SO THOSE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS I SAW A LOT OF.
HOMELESSNESS CAN TAKE MULTIPLE FORMS.
PEOPLE CAN BE LIVING IN SHELTERS, THEY COULD BE ON
THE STREETS, OR THEY COULD ALSO BE COUCH SURFING.
>> AND WITH FIRST NATIONS, YOU OFFER A LOT OF DIFFERENT
SERVICES.
WHEN IT COMES TO PEOPLE BEING EVICTED FROM THEIR
HOMES, WHAT DOES IT TAKE FOR AN INDIVIDUAL TO MAYBE GET
BACK ON THEIR FEET AND TO GET BACK INTO FINDING
HOUSING?
>> SO FOR AN INDIVIDUAL, IT'S KIND OF HARD.
A LOT OF APARTMENT COMPLEXES DO EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND
CHECKS, SO IF THEY'VE BEEN EVICTED BEFORE, IT MAKES IT
A LITTLE TOUGH FOR THEM TO GET INTO HOUSING AGAIN.
A LOT OF THEM HAVE TO WAIT SEVERAL YEARS BEFORE THEY
CAN ERASE IT OFF THEIR RECORDS.
BUT IN REGARDS TO FOLKS GETTING INTO HOUSING, THERE
ARE HOUSING ORGANIZATIONS OUT THERE.
THERE'S MULTIPLE LOW INCOME APARTMENTS HERE IN
ALBUQUERQUE, AND THEN ALSO SUBSIDIZED HOUSING, AND
THERE'S ALSO HOUSING PROGRAMS FOR VETERANS, AS
WELL.
>> WITH YOUR WORK ON THE COMMISSION, WHAT HAS BEEN
THE TOP RECOMMENDATION FOR THE CITY?
>> SO IN 2017, AFTER WE WERE APPOINTED, WE CREATED A
REPORT AND GAVE IT TO FORMER MAYOR BERRY, AND OUR NO. 1
RECOMMENDATION WAS DESIGNATING A FULL-TIME
TRAVEL LIAISON FOR THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE.
>> JENNIFER, WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO ADD TO THE
COMMISSION'S WORK WHEN YOU SEE NOT ONLY TRIBAL LEADERS
TALKING ABOUT THIS ISSUE, BUT JUST COMMUNITY MEMBERS
IN THE NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITY HERE IN
ALBUQUERQUE?
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEEDS THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED ON
THE ISSUE?
>> WELL, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE REALLY, REALLY NEED,
IN ADDITION TO HAVING THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE TAKE
THIS ISSUE SERIOUSLY, AND BY SERIOUSLY, I MEAN PROVIDING
MORE RESOURCES AND LOOKING AT THE AMOUNT OF VIOLENCE
THAT OUR UNSHELTERED RELATIVES EXPERIENCE ON THE
STREETS.
BUT WE ALSO NEED OUR NEARBY NATIVE NATIONS TO ALSO TAKE
A LOOK AT THIS ISSUE, BECAUSE IT IS OUR CITIZENS
WHO ARE HERE IN THE STREETS.
SO IT'S BEEN VERY DIFFICULT TO BRING TRIBAL LEADERS TO
THE TABLE TO TALK ABOUT THESE ISSUES, AND THAT STILL
NEEDS TO BE -- IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE REALLY
NEED TO DO. AND THAT'S WHAT THE NAVAJO
NATION HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION IS ATTEMPTING AS
WE VISIT WITH THE MAYOR'S OFFICE ONCE AGAIN.
>> BEYOND JUST HAVING DIALOGUE, WHAT ARE SOME OF
THE CHALLENGES?
WHY IS IT DIFFICULT TO FIND, I GUESS, SOLUTIONS TO
ADDRESSING SOME OF THE ISSUES PEOPLE ARE FACING ON
THE STREETS?
>> THESE ISSUES ARE SO VAST, AND AS A HISTORIAN MYSELF, I
TEND TO LOOK AT THESE ISSUES STRUCTURALLY.
I THINK THE INFRASTRUCTURES ON NATIVE NATIONS JUST IS
NOT -- IT DOESN'T HAVE THE CAPACITY TO PROVIDE FOR OUR
CITIZENS.
AS WILL MENTIONED, MANY OF OUR PEOPLE COME INTO THIS
TOWN LOOKING FOR JOBS, AND WE SIMPLY HAVE A VERY HIGH
POVERTY RATE, FOR EXAMPLE, ON THE NAVAJO NATION.
AND THEN THERE'S JUST VERY FEW RESOURCES FOR
REHABILITATION FOR ALCOHOL TREATMENT, AND THOSE ARE
SERVICES THAT STILL NEED TO BE PROVIDED.
I ALSO, JUST FROM TALKING TO PEOPLE, UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S
VERY DIFFICULT ONCE A PERSON MAKES A DECISION TO CHANGE
THEIR LIVES TO ACCESS RESOURCES, TREATMENT, THINGS
LIKE THAT.
SO THERE'S STILL SO MUCH THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO
ADDRESS THESE NEEDS.
>> AND AS A RESEARCHER, AS AN EDUCATOR, AS AN ADVOCATE,
TALK ABOUT THE SOCIAL ILLS THAT COLONIZATION HAS BEEN A
PART OF.
>> WELL, YOU KNOW, THE NAVAJO NATION HUMAN RIGHTS
COMMISSION WAS FORMED IN 2006 AFTER A NAVAJO MAN BY
THE NAME OF CLINT JOHN WAS KILLED BY A WHITE POLICE
OFFICER IN FARMINGTON, NEW MEXICO.
SO WE HAVE WORKED TO SUPPORT FAMILIES WHO HAVE TO DEAL
WITH THESE VIOLENT SITUATIONS.
WE CAME INTO ALBUQUERQUE AND SUPPORTED THE FAMILY OF
ALLISON GORMAN AND KEE THOMPSON, AND WE HAVE HAD
DIALOGUE WITH THE FAMILY OF RONNIE ROSS.
I JUST THINK THAT IT'S HISTORICAL, YOU KNOW.
IN THE SEVENTIES, THERE WAS COINED A TERM, INDIAN
ROLLING.
IN FARMINGTON IN THE 1970s, THERE WAS WHITE
TEENAGERS WHO MUTILATED AND TORTURED THREE NAVAJO MEN,
AND THAT'S WHERE THE TERM CAME FROM.
WHEN THE MEN WHO MURDERED RONNIE ROSS SAY THEY DID IT,
THEY KILLED HIM JUST FOR FUN, THEN THIS KIND OF
ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOR TOWARDS NATIVE PEOPLES IS
DEEPLY EMBEDDED IN THE SYSTEM.
>> AND BEING THAT NATIVE PEOPLE HERE, THIS IS THEIR
TRADITIONAL HOMELAND.
>> YES.
WE'RE OFTEN TOLD, AND OUR RELATIVES ON THE STREETS ARE
OFTEN TOLD THAT YOU DON'T BELONG HERE, GO HOME, AND WE
LOOK AT IT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE THAT THIS IS
INDIGENOUS LANDS AND WE ARE NOT OUT OF PLACE, THAT WE
BELONG HERE.
>> WILL, JENNIFER HAD MENTIONED SUBSTANCE ABUSE
AND HOW SOME PEOPLE ON THE STREETS ARE OFTEN STRUGGLING
WITH SUBSTANCE ABUSE.
WHAT IS FIRST NATIONS VIEW TO HELP PEOPLE WHO WANT TO
OVERCOME ANY TYPE OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE?
>> FIRST NATIONS HAS PARTNERSHIPS WITH METS AND
THEN ALSO TURQUOISE LODGE.
SO FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO DO WANT TO GET INTO TREATMENT,
ONCE THEY GO THROUGH THE INTAKE PROCESS AND SPEAK
WITH A CASE MANAGER, FOR INSTANCE, LIKE THE HOMELESS
OUTREACH PROGRAM, THEY WILL GET THEM SITUATED, AND THEN
THEY CAN TRY TO FAST TRACK THEM INTO GETTING THOSE
SERVICES.
AND THEN IN ADDITION, WE DO HAVE OUTPATIENT
REHABILITATION, AND THEN ALSO WE HAVE SUBSTANCE ABUSE
COUNSELORS, AA MEETINGS, AND INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING, AS
WELL.
>> AND YOU ALSO HAVE A TRADITIONAL COMPONENT, AS
WELL?
>> YES.
SO, WE HAVE A TRADITIONAL HEALING PROGRAM.
THEY PROVIDE A HOLISTICALLY BASED APPROACH TO WESTERN
MEDICINE.
WE HAVE A SWEAT LODGE THAT THEY DO ON FRIDAY NIGHTS,
AND THEN SATURDAYS, ALSO.
AND THEY DO MEN AND WOMEN SWEATS.
>> HOW DOES HELPING AN INDIVIDUAL GET OVER
SUBSTANCE ABUSE, WHETHER IT'S DRUGS OR ALCOHOL, HOW
CAN THAT HELP THEM GET INTO MORE STABLE HOUSING?
>> ONCE AN INDIVIDUAL OVERCOMES ALCOHOLISM OR
ADDICTION, THEY CAN START THINKING CLEARLY, AND THEN
THEY'RE IN THE RIGHT MIND TO GET INTO HOUSING AND HELP
THEM START FOCUSING ON WHAT THEY NEED TO ACCOMPLISH AND
GET DONE.
>> JENNIFER, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE DONE HERE IN
ALBUQUERQUE TO HELP ADDRESS THE HOMELESSNESS AMONG
NATIVE PEOPLE HERE?
>> THAT'S SUCH A HARD QUESTION, AND I WISH THAT I
HAD AN ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION.
I THINK THAT THERE NEEDS TO CONTINUE TO BE A NETWORK OF
SUPPORT.
WE ALSO, MANY OF US, TEND TO LOOK THE OTHER WAY AND NOT
EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE OUR UNSHELTERED RELATIVES AS
HUMAN BEINGS, AND I THINK ONE OF MY STUDENTS WHO WORKS
AT HEALTH CARE FOR THE HOMELESS TOLD ME THAT EVEN
JUST THE PUBLIC RECOGNITION OR AWARENESS THROUGH
EDUCATION, LIKE WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE, HAS HAD PEOPLE
ACKNOWLEDGE HOMELESSNESS A LITTLE BIT MORE IN TERMS OF
SUPPORT AND DONATIONS.
SO, I KNOW PEOPLE IN THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS WHO GO
AND OFFER THEIR SERVICES OR DONATE TO THESE FACILITIES
THAT OFFER SUPPORT.
THEY FEED PEOPLE AT A BREAKFAST SOMEWHERE DOWNTOWN
ON SATURDAY MORNINGS, AND THOSE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS
THAT I'VE SEEN HAPPENING.
>> WHAT ABOUT YOU, WILL?
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS SOME OF THE NEEDS TO HELP ADDRESS
THE PROBLEM HERE IN ALBUQUERQUE?
>> I THINK EMPLOYMENT IS A BIG ONE.
AT FIRST NATIONS, WE DO OFFER JOB DEVELOPMENT AT ALL
NATIONS WELLNESS & HEALING CENTER, AND THEN IN
ADDITION, WE DO PROVIDE TWO WARM MEALS A DAY, MONDAY
THROUGH FRIDAY, FOR INDIVIDUALS.
BUT I THINK IF PEOPLE CAN GET THE JOB SKILLS, THEY CAN
BUILD A PRETTY GOOD RESUMÉ.
I THINK THAT MIGHT BE THE KEY TO ENTERING THE WORK
FIELD AGAIN.
>> WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH, BOTH OF YOU, FOR JOINING US
TODAY.
>> THANK YOU.
