IYANLA VANZANT: She must hear something
she had never heard before--
her mother's story.
So there's some things about you and her birth and her life
that she doesn't know.
I think the first place for you to begin
was to talk to her about being pregnant with her.
I was pretty much a one day stand with your dad drinking.
I was in a relationship with [BLEEP] at the time.
And I was so abused the whole pregnancy with her.
It was like she was pissed at me because I was pregnant.
And I mean, she used to beat the [BLEEP] out of me.
And it was every day.
It was-- first, it was like she was
trying to beat you out of me.
She would take hangers, broomsticks, boards,
and put them inside of me to try to get rid of you.
I can't do--
IYANLA VANZANT: Breathe, breathe.
Say it. Speak it.
No, no, no, no, no. Head up.
Head up. Come on, lady.
Come on, woman.
I--
[INTERPOSING VOICES] - Speak it.
Speak it.
Speak it.
Speak it.
Speak it.
Ms. Monique.
How can you think that's OK?
Like, that's not OK.
Don't let nobody do that to you, mom.
OK, but if I didn't know no better, how can I?
Don't get defense.
I'm not. I'm trying not to.
IYANLA VANZANT: You are. OK.
So what if the shame and guilt that you're
trying to heal as adult women is about what
you experienced as children?
Because I think that when y'all be fighting, it's not
you two people here like this.
It's the 12-year-old in you striking out
and the 12-year-old in you striking
out, fighting each other.
I want you to explain to your daughter, share
with your daughter, why you were with [BLEEP]
who would beat you.
I was with her because--
I went with her because for one, I didn't
have anywhere else to go.
Number two, that's what I was used to.
I mean--
Tell her why you were used to that.
Take your time.
Breathe.
Take your time.
Cause from the time I was a child
before I even became to Akron, Ohio, all I knew was beatings.
When I got off that bus in 1978, I was full of nothing
but extension cord marks.
IYANLA VANZANT: Because?
Because I was abused.
IYANLA VANZANT: By?
My grandmother.
But mom, you knew that wasn't normal to let
people stick stuff in you.
You knew that wasn't normal.
I was afraid.
But you could have got out of that situation.
You don't know what I went through, baby.
I tried.
You're defending-- you're defending.
But she's coming at me--
IYANLA VANZANT: No, no.
No, no, you can't get defensive.
When she needed to learn, you were on drugs.
She was in [BLEEP] where they were violating her.
CYNTHIA: Hey, I wasn't on drugs when my kids went to [BLEEP]..
It was afterwards! - OK.
CYNTHIA: That's what I'm saying.
But where were you when your kids were in [BLEEP]??
I went to prison for selling drugs.
OK, well, duh, whatever.
CYNTHIA: It's still a difference.
Ms. Cynthia, you weren't there.
And what she's doing is holding you
accountable for some things you can't even explain,
Ms. Cynthia.
Don't even try.
