Waching daily Feb 16 2019

>> Ian: ON THIS FRIDAY NIGHT,

GROWING CONCERNS FOR HAITI.

>> THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT

FIGHT IN HAITI'S INDEPENDENCE.

>> Ian: WE TALK TO PEOPLE WHILE

ANGRY PROTESTERS FILL THE

STREETS.

WHY THE HATIAN PRESIDENT SAYS HE

WON'T STEP ASIDE.

>> Ian: DONALD TRUMP DECLARES A

NATIONAL EMERGENCY AT THE

U.S.-MEXICO BORDER, FREEING UP

MONEY FOR HIS LONG-PROMISED

WALL.

WE'LL LOOK AT WHY IT'S FAR FROM

A DONE DEAL.

>>> AND AFTER WE DUG UP HUNDREDS

OF CASES OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN

AMATEUR SPORT, YOU SENT US YOUR

QUESTIONS.

TONIGHT, WE ANSWER THEM.

>>> THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."

[*]

>> Andrew: DISTRICT RAGE IN

HAITI HAS FUELLED VIOLENT

PROTESTS FOR LONGER THAN A WEEK

NOW, AND A LONG AWAITED

ANNOUNCEMENT BY THEIR PRESIDENT

HAS DONE NOTHING TO QUELL THE

FURRY.

THAT HAS LEFT MORE THAN 150

CANADIANS STRANDED THERE.

CONDITIONS ARE SO DANGEROUS,

MOST WON'T DRIVE TO THE AIRPORT,

BUT LAST NIGHT, FIVE DID.

LAST NIGHT, WE TOLD YOU ABOUT

DR. BAZILE, WHO WENT TO HAITI TO

DRIVER MEDICAL SUPPLIES.

THE DOCTOR AND HIS TEAM BRAVED A

JOURNEY FROM THE PORT CITY TO AN

AIRPORT IN THE CAPITAL, NORMALLY

150 KILOMETRES, BUT BLOCKADES

STRETCHED THE TRIP TO 7.5 HOURS.

>> PLEASE DO NOT DO WHAT I DO.

YOU HAVE TO PAY SOMEBODY EVERY

TIME WE PASS TO AROULLOW YOU TO

PASS.

THEY FINALLY ALLOWED AN

AMBULANCE TO PASS FOR $150 IT

WAS WORTH IT.

WE ARE NOW OUT OF THE COUNTRY.

>>> SO HOW DID HAITI GET TO THIS

POINT?

THE POOREST COUNTRY IN THE

AMERICAS WAS PUSHED EVEN CLOSER

TO DESPERATION BY PUNISHING

INFLATION AND AN APPARENTLY

CORRUPT GOVERNMENT.

>>> IN ONE DAY, SIX PEOPLE WERE

KILLED DURING PROTESTS.

SINCE THEN, DOUBLE DIGIT

INFLATION HAS DRIVEN UP THE COST

OF LIVING.

OVER THE LAST NINE DAYS, THINGS

HAVE REACHED A BREAKING POINT.

>> RIGHT NOW, THE HOSPITALS ARE

NOT WORKING.

YOU CAN'T REALLY FIND, LIKE,

CLEAN WATER TO DRINK.

IT MIGHT BE WORSE THAN WHEN WE

HAVE, LIKE, NATURAL DISASTERS

BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT THE SUN

WILL RISE AGAIN, BUT NOW, THE

COUNTRY LOOKS DOWN BECAUSE OF

THE POLITICAL SITUATION AND THE

ECONOMIC SITUATION.

>> Ian: NOW, THE PRESIDENT,

JOVENEL MOÏSE HAS BRUSHED OFF

DEMANDS THAT HE RESIGN.

RIGHT NOW, THE SITUATION IS SO

DIRE, THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT

SAID IT'S HALTING ALL

DEPORTATIONS TO HAITI.

MONTREAL IS HOME TO CANADA'S

LARGEST HATIAN COMMUNITY.

THE CBC CAUSAL SON NORTHCOTT

TALKED TO SOME OF THEM.

>> Reporter: DANIEL SAYS THE

LATEST PROTESTS ARE DIFFERENT.

>> THIS ONE IS THE TRUE

SITUATION OF THE PEOPLE.

>> Reporter: HE'S EAGER TO

RETURN TO HAITI TO SEE WHAT'S

HAPPENING NOW AND SAYS THE

VIOLENCE WON'T DETER HIM.

>> VIOLENCE IS REALLY IMPORTANT

HERE.

IF NOT FOR THE VIOLENCE, THE

GOVERNMENT NOT GOING TO GIVE A

DAMN.

>> Reporter: THE ONGOING

PROTESTS HAVE BEEN A RECURRING

TOPIC ON THE AIR AT MONTREAL'S

HATIAN RADIO STATION.

HE AND OTHERS IN THE HATIAN

HATIAN DIASPORA ARE WORRIED

ABOUT THE COUNTRY.

HE ADDS THAT HAITI'S PRESIDENT

HAS LOST CONTROL, FAILED TO

DELIVER ON PROMISES MANY

HATIAN -- HAITIANS WERE COUNTING

ON AND SHOULD STEP DOWN.

SOME CANADIANS ARE ON HAITIAN

MISSIONS, LIKE THIS CANADIAN

NURSE.

>> THERE ARE ROAD BLOCKS IN

PLACE, BURNING TIRES.

THOSE BARRICADES ARE MANNED.

THEY DO NOT ALLOW YOU TO PASS.

>> Reporter: SHE SAYS SHE'S

DISAPPOINTED BY THE CANADIAN

RESPONSE AND IS WORRIED ABOUT

RUNNING OUT OF FOOD AND CELL

PHONE SERVICE.

AS FOR THE 113 TOURISTS UNABLE

TO LEAVE THIS RESORT, QUEBEC'S

PREMIER SAYS AIR TRANSAT IS

ORGANIZING A RESCUE PLAN TO USE

HELICOPTERS TO GET THEM TO THE

AIRPORT THEN BACK TO MONTREAL.

ALLISON NORTHCOTT, CBC NEWS,

MONTREAL.

>> Ian: DONALD TRUMP HAS

DECLARED A NATIONAL EMERGENCY TO

FREE UP MONEY TO GET HIS WALL.

THE QUESTION IS WHAT HAPPENS

NOW?

ELLEN MORROW HAS REACTION.

>> Reporter: THERE WAS NO

SURPRISE IN HOW PRESIDENT TRUMP

JUSTIFIED HIS DECLARATION.

>> President Donald Trump: WE'RE

TALKING ABOUT AN INVASION OF OUR

COUNTRY WITH DRUGS, WITH HUMAN

TRAFFICKERS, WITH ALL TYPES OF

CRIMINALS AND GANGS.

>> Reporter: NEVER MIND THAT

ILLEGAL BORDER CROSSINGS HAVE

OVERALL BEEN ON THE DECLINE,

TRUMP'S DECLARED A NATIONAL

EMERGENCY, SIDESTEPPING CONGRESS

TO FREE UP $8 BILLION TO BUILD A

WALL THAT CANDIDATE TRUMP

PROMISED MEXICO WOULD PAY FOR.

BUT WAS DECLARING A NATIONAL

EMERGENCY ACTUALLY NECESSARY?

NOT REALLY, SAYS TRUMP HIMSELF.

>> President Donald Trump: I

COULD DO THE WALL OVER A LONGER

PERIOD OF TIME.

I DIDN'T NEED TO DO THIS.

>> Reporter: A LINE SEIZED UPON

BY CALIFORNIA'S ATTORNEY GENERAL

AS HE ANNOUNCED A LAWSUIT TO

STOP THE WALL FROM BEING BUILT.

>> AS HE SAID HIMSELF, HE DIDN'T

HAVE TO DO THIS.

THERE'S NO EMERGENCY FOR THE

NATION.

>> Reporter: AND THOSE LAWSUITS

COULD MEAN MONTHS, MAYBE YEARS

BEFORE ANY GROUND IS BROKEN AS

THE COURTS CONSIDER --

>> WHETHER THE PRESIDENT IS

TRYING TO DO AN END-AROUND

CONGRESS'S EXCLUSIVE AUTHORITY

OVER THE PURSE.

AND AS WE KNOW, THE ONLY REAL

REASON WHY HE'S SORT OF

UNILATERAL

UNILATERALLY DECLARED AN

EMERGENCY IS BECAUSE HE COULDN'T

GET FUNDING FOR THE WALL.

>> Reporter: AND THE PRESIDENT

IS UP FOR THE FIGHT.

>> AND WE'LL END UP IN THE

SUPREME COURT, AND HOPEFULLY,

WE'LL GET A FAIR SHAKE.

>> Reporter: OPPONENTS HAVE

ACCUSED PRESIDENT TRUMP FOR A

RECKLESS DISREGARD FOR THE

CONSTITUTION.

>>> SO WHAT'S THE END GAME?

WELL, EVEN THOUGH HE KNOWS HE

MIGHT NOT WIN IN THE COURTS,

DECLARING A NATIONAL EMERGENCY

ALLOWS PRESIDENT TRUMP TO TELL

HIS BASE THAT HE DID EVERYTHING

HE COULD TO FULFILL A CAMPAIGN

PROMISE.

THAT'S AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE

GOING INTO 2020.

ELLEN MORROW, CBC NEWS,

WASHINGTON.

>> Ian: THE TERM NATIONAL

EMERGENCY MIGHT MAKE YOU THINK

PRESIDENTS USE THE EXTRAORDINARY

POWER FOR EVENTS HAPPENING IN

THE UNITED STATES, BUT IT TURNS

OUT MOST OF THE TIME, THAT'S NOT

THE CASE.

MOST HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN ABOUT

FOREIGN POLICY, SANCTIONING

FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS OR STOPPING

THE SPREAD OF WEAPONS OF MASS

DESTRUCTION.

IN FACT OF THE 59 NATIONAL

EMERGENCIES DECLARED BEFORE

TODAY, JUST THREE HAD TO DO WITH

EMERGENCIES IN THE U.S.

RELAXING REQUIREMENTS OF THE

H-1-N-1, AND AFTER 9-11.

FOR MORE ON THE POLITICAL

CONTEXT OF THE U.S. PRESIDENT,

LET'S TURN TO KEITH BOAG IN

WASHINGTON.

KEITH, WHAT'S GOING ON?

>> Reporter: REMEMBER, PRESIDENT

TRUMP SAID HE WAS GOING TO BUILD

A WALL AND HAVE MEXICO PAY FOR

IT.

IT WAS A GREAT LINE FOR CAMPAIGN

RALLIES BECAUSE IT STOOD FOR

KEEPING PEOPLE HIS BASEDN'T LIKE

OUT OF THE COUNTRY.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT PEOPLE ON

THE RIGHT LIKE ANN COLTER LOVES

TRUMP FOR WHAT HE PROMISED TO DO

BUT ARE UNFORGIVING WHEN HE

FAILS TO DELIVER.

TODAY HE TRIED TO LOOK AS THOSE

HE'S STILL THEIR CHAMPION, BUT

COULTER SAID TODAY, THE REAL

NATIONAL EMERGENCY IN AMERICA IS

THAT THE PRESIDENT IS AN IDIOT,

SO THAT'S WHAT HE GOT FOR HIS

EFFORTS.

>> Ian: SO WE HEARD THAT THE

FATE OF THIS WALL IS FAR FROM

CERTAIN.

HOW DOES THIS PLAY OUT FOR HIM?

>> Reporter: WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE

ALL THIS IS GOING TO BE TIED UP

IN THE COURTS UNTIL AFTER THE

2020 ELECTION.

SO YOU SEE TRUMP TODAY PREPARING

HIS STATEMENTS FOR THE CAMPAIGN

ABOUT HOW NONE OF THIS IS REALLY

HIS FAULT.

HE BLAMED THE REPUBLICAN

LEADERSHIP FOR NOT MOVING AHEAD

WITH THE WALL IN THE FIRST STAGE

OF HIS PRESIDENCY, AND THAT'S

LIKELY TO WORK WITH HIS BASE.

I MEAN, IF HE DOES BELIEVE HE

COULD SHOOT SOMEBODY ON FIFTH

AVENUE AND IT WOULDN'T COST HIM

A SINGLE VOTE, HE COULD

CERTAINLY BLAME SOMEBODY FOR NOT

GETTING HIS WALL.

IT COULD COST HIM WITH VOTERS HE

GOT IN 2016.

THEY'VE SEEN THE PRESIDENT WASTE

TIME, MONEY, AND SHUTDOWN THE

GOVERNMENT FOR IT, AND

ULTIMATELY FAIL, AND THAT LOOKS

LIKE INCOMPETENCE.

>> Ian: THE FUNDING IS EXPECTED

TO PAY FOR 376 KILOMETRES OF

FENCING.

THAT'S LESS THAN A QUARTER OF

WHAT HE SAID HE ORIGINALLY

WANTED TO BUILD.

>>> LET'S TURN TO CANADIAN

POLITICS, AND IT'S BEEN A ROUGH

WEEK FOR THE PRIME MINISTER,

FACING THE SNC-LAVALIN STORY.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU INSISTS THAT JODI

WILSON-RAYBOULD WAS NOT

INSTRUCTED TO STEER THE CASE

AWAY FROM THE COURTROOM, BUT NOT

MUCH ELSE, AND THAT IS PROMPTING

MORE QUESTIONS.

KATIE SIMPSON WALKS US THROUGH

THE LATEST.

>> Reporter: THIS WEEK HAS BEEN

SO DIFFICULT FOR THE PRIME

MINISTER THAT AT AN ANNOUNCEMENT

WITH BLACKBERRY, THE COMPANY'S

C.E.O. JOKED WITH JUSTIN

TRUDEAU'S POLITICAL WOES.

>> ONE THING I FOUND CONSISTENT

IN THE LAST SIX YEARS IS THE

SUPPORT WE GOT FROM THE CANADIAN

GOVERNMENT.

SOMETIMES NOT SO MUCH FROM THE

CANADIAN MEDIA.

I'M SURE A LOT OF PEOPLE

RESONATE WITH THAT.

>> Reporter: TRUDEAU FACED

ANOTHER ROUND OF QUESTIONS ON

THE SNC-LAVALIN AFFAIR,

ADMITTING HIS FORMER JUSTICE

MINISTER PRESSED HIM DIRECTLY

ABOUT THE ISSUE.

>> Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau: JODI WILSON-RAYBOULD

ASKED ME IF -- IF I WAS

DIRECTING HER OR GOING TO DIRECT

HER TO TAKE A PARTICULAR

DECISION, AND I, OF COURSE, SAID

NO.

>> Reporter: TRUDEAU

ACKNOWLEDGED THE INTENSE

LOBBYING BY THE QUEBEC FIRM AND

PROVINCIAL POLITICIANS BUT

DENIES HIS OFFICE TRIED TO

PRESSURE JODI WILSON-RAYBOULD

INTO KILLING THE COURSE CASE

AGAINST SNC-LAVALIN, BUT HE

WOULD NOT RULE OUT THAT HER

DEMOTION TO VETERAN'S MINISTER

IN JANUARY WAS BECAUSE SHE

REFUSED TO INTERVENE.

>> Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau: THERE ARE ALWAYS A WIDE

RANGE OF FACTORS THAT GO INTO

MAKING THAT DECISION, BUT AS I

SAID, IF SCOTT BRISON HAD NOT

STEPPED DOWN SUDDENLY OVER THE

CHRISTMAS BREAK, THERE WOULD NOT

HAVE BEEN A CABINET SHUFFLE.

>> Reporter: TRUDEAU'S

NONCOMMITTAL ANSWERS ARE

FRUSTRATING THE OPPOSITION.

>> SO TO ME, THAT JUST MEANS WE

REALLY NEED TO GET TO THE BOTTOM

OF THE ENTIRE STORY.

>> Reporter: THE CONSERVATIVES

AND N.D.P. SAY TRUDEAU MUST

WAIVE SOLICITOR-CLIENT PRIVILEGE

AND CAB SHE TELL RULES TO ALLOW

WILSON-RAYBOULD TO GIVE HER SIDE

OF THE STORY.

>> SHE SHOULD TALK TO THE

CANADIAN PEOPLE AND HE SHOULD

STOP HIDING BEHIND THE

SOLICITOR-CLIENT PRIVILEGE.

>> Reporter: THE DALY SLOW DRIP

OF INFORMATION FROM THE PRIME

MINISTER IS FUELLING THIS SAGA,

AND WITH M.P.s RETURNS TO OTTAWA

NEXT WEEK, JUSTIN TRUDEAU WILL

FACE FRESH CALLS FOR

TRANSPARENCY.

KATIE SIMPSON, CBC NEWS, OTTAWA.

>> Ian: A MAN WAS CHARGED IN THE

FIRST DEGREE MURDER OF HIS

DAUGHTER AFTER AN AMBER ALERT

CAME TO A HEART WRENCHING END.

RIYA RAJKUMAR WAS REPORTED

MISSING AROUND DINNER TIME YES,

VALENTI

VALENTINE'S DAY.

IT WAS ALSO HER BIRTHDAY AND THE

BIRTHDAY OF HER MOTHER.

HER BODY WAS FOUND IN HIS

FATHER'S BRAMPTON, ONTARIO HOME

JUST A SHORT WHILE AFTER RIYA

WAS DECLARED MISSING.

TODAY AT HER SCHOOL, GRIEF

COUNCILLORS WAS BROUGHT IN.

RELATIVES OF THE ACCUSED SAID

THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING

ON UNTIL THEY SAW THE AMBER

ALERT.

>> HE WAS ALWAYS A COUSIN TO

LOOK UP TO, LIKE, WE JUST NEVER

EXPECTED THIS TO HAPPEN.

>> I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

IT'S STILL TOTALLY SHOCK.

WE'RE -- YOU KNOW, I DON'T

EVEN -- WE'RE SPEECHLESS.

WE CAN'T EVEN MOVE WHEN WE SAW

AND HEARD THIS BAD NEWS.

>> Ian: A MOTORIST WHO ALSO

HEARD THAT AMBER ALERT HELPED

POLICE FIND THE FATHER MINUTES

LATER 130 KILOMETRES AWAY.

HE'S NOW IN HOSPITAL WITH AN

UNDISCLOSED MEDICAL CONDITION.

POLICE ARE TOUTING HIS ARREST AS

A SUCCESS FOR THE AMBER ALERT

SYSTEM, BUT IT DIDN'T SAVE RIYA.

THERE ARE QUESTIONS AS TO

WHETHER THE POLICE MOVED QUICKLY

ENOUGH.

>> Reporter: THIS IS WHAT POLICE

IN ONTARIO HEARD AND SAW ON

THEIR MOBILE PHONES LAST NIGHT

AFTER 11:30, BUT THIS AM BETTER

ALERT WAS ISSUED ALMOST FIVE

HOURS AFTER LITTLE RIYA RAJKUMAR

WAS REPORTED MISSING BY HER

MOTHER.

THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

ADMINISTERS THE AMBER ALERT

SYSTEM AND REQUIRES CASES TO

MEET THREE CRITERIA.

>> THE FIRST CRITERIA IS THE

CHILD BE UNDER THE AGE OF 18.

THE SECOND CRITERIA IS THEY HAVE

TO BELIEVED TO BE IN DANGER.

AND THE THIRD CRITERIA IS

DESCRIPTIONS ON ONE OF THREE

THINGS, THE CHILD, THE SUSPECT,

OR THE VEHICLE.

>> Reporter: POLICE IN BRAMPTON,

ONTARIO SAYS RIYA'S CASE

APPEARED TO MEET THAT CRITERIA,

BUT OFFICERS HAD TO INVESTIGATE

FIRST.

>> MAYBE IT ISN'T, BUT WHAT THEY

THINK -- WE WANT TO COVER

EVERYTHING.

WE DON'T WANT TO LEAVE ANYTHING

UNTURNED.

OBVIOUSLY WHEN WE REALIZE WE'RE

NOT GETTING HER, WE SPLIT THE

FORM FOR THE AM BETTER ALERT.

>> Reporter: ALSO OF CONCERN,

SHORTLY AFTER RIYA WAS REPORTED

MISSING, OFFICERS KNOCKED ON THE

DOOR OF HIS FATHER'S HOUSE WHERE

THE BODY WAS EVENTUALLY FOUND,

BUT THEY LEFT BECAUSE THERE WAS

NO ANSWER AND NO CAR IN THE

DRIVEWAY.

IT WAS ONLY HOURS LATER THAT

THEY FINALLY FORCED THEIR WAY

IN.

>> AT SOME POINT IN THE

INVESTIGATION, THEY RECEIVED

ENOUGH INFORMATION THAT THEY

FELT THAT -- THAT THE GIRL, THE

11-YEAR-OLD GIRL COULD IN FACT

BE IN THE RESIDENCE AND WAS IN

NEED OF ASSISTANCE.

SO WITH THAT INFORMATION, FEAR

FOR SOMEBODY'S LIFE, THEY WERE

ABLE TO FORCE ENTRY.

>> Reporter: THE POLICE WAS

ASKED IF THEY'LL REF THEIR

POLICY ON FORCED ENTRY WHEN

DEALING WITH A CHILD.

>> WE WANT TO FINISH DEALING

WITH THIS PORTION OF THE

INVESTIGATION AND PERHAPS THAT

WILL BE SOMETHING THAT WILL BE

LOOKED AT LATER.

>> Reporter: SMALL COMFORT FOR A

MOTHER, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY NOW

IN GRIEF.

RON CHARLES, CBC NEWS, TORONTO.

>> Ian: THAT LATE-NIGHT AMBER

ALERT ALSO LED TO HUNDREDS OF

911 CALLS, AND WE'RE NOT TALKING

ABOUT TIPS TO LOCATE THE

SUSPECT.

THE CALLS WERE TO LODGE

COMPLAINTS ABOUT BEING WOKEN UP

BY THE ALERT.

POLICE TWEETED, AS A RESULT OF

SOMEONE RECEIVING THE ALERT,

SOMEONE LOCATED HIS VEHICLE.

THE SYSTEM WORKS.

TONIGHT, WE SPOKE TO SOMEONE WHO

WAS DISAPPOINTED ABOUT THE

RESPONSE.

>> I'M A PARENT OF A YOUNG

DAUGHTER, AND I CAN'T BEGIN TO

IMAGINE WHAT THE FAMILY OF RIYA

IS GOING THROUGH.

SHORTLY AFTER WE PUT ON THE THE

AMBER ALERT, WE WERE THE MEDIA

OFFICERS LAST NIGHT.

WE FIELDED OVER A DOZEN PHONE

CALLS.

IT'S DISAPPOINTING.

IT'S A FIVE-MINUTE INCONVENIENCE

TO THEM THAT COULD HELP FIND

SOMEONE.

DESPITE THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS

THAT WE RECEIVED ON THE AMBER

ALERT SYSTEM COMING THROUGH TO

PEOPLE'S PHONES, WE HAVE -- FOR

EVERY ONE COMPLAINT, WE HAD

THREE POSITIVE COMMENTS FROM

PEOPLE THAT WERE APPRECIATIVE OF

THE AMBER ALERT.

>> Ian: SOME OF THE STORIES

WE'RE FOLLOWING TONIGHT ON "THE

NATIONAL," HEALTH OFFICIALS HERE

IN VANCOUVER HAVE NOW IDENTIFIED

EIGHT CASES OF MEASLES LINKED TO

THREE FRENCH SCHOOLS AND ONE IN

PARTICULAR.

>> CASES ARE OCCURRING IN STAFF

AND -- IN STAFF, STUDENTS, AND

FAMILY MEMBERS AFFILIATED WITH

THIS SCHOOL.

VISITED THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

OF B.C. CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

WHILE THEY WERE INFECT RGSIOUS.

ONE OR WRITTEN ONE YOURSELF.

MOMMY BLOGS HAVE BECOME A

POPULAR WAY FOR NEW MOTHERS TO

SHARE THE JOYS AND FRUSTRATIONS

THAT COME WITH HAVING CHILDREN.

FOR SOME, IT'S ALSO BECOME A

LUCRATIVE JOB.

>> THE MOMMY SPACE IS REALLY BIG

WITH REGARDS TO ADVERTISERS.

THEY'RE LIKE FRIENDS TRYING TO

WORK WITH MOMS.

>> Ian: MOMMY BLOGGERS ARE A

MAJOR PART OF INFLUENCER

MARKETING WHERE BRAND-BASED

SOCIAL MEDIA PERSONALITIES TO

FEATURE THEIR PRODUCTS IN THEIR

POST.

BY 2020, RESEARCHERS SAY

COMPANIES WILL INVEST 5 TO $10

BILLION IN THE IDEA, BUT IT

COMES WITH THEIR OWN CHALLENGES.

>> Reporter: AT FIRST, ANA

SINCLAIR'S POSTS ABOUT BEING A

NEW MOM WAS A WAY TO CONNECT

WITH OTHER WOMAN.

THEN, SHE REALIZED THEY COULD BE

SOMETHING MORE.

AS THE NUMBER OF HER FOLLOWERS

GREW, COMPANIES STARTED SENDING

HER E-MAILS TO ADVERTISE THEIR

PRODUCTS ON HER PAGE.

>> I DIDN'T THINK THAT REGULAR

WOMEN GOT PAID TO DO THIS.

>> Reporter: BUT REGULAR MOMS

ARE A HUGE MARKET FOR COMPANIES,

WHICH IS WHY ADVERTISERS ARE

CONTINUING TO COURT MOMMY

BLOGGERS.

AN AVERAGE MOM INFLUENCER MAKES

50 TO $100 PER SPONSORED POST,

WHILE THE TOP BLOGGERS MAKE SIX

HER BLOGS BY HER KIDS, WHO ARE

NOW NINE AND 15.

>> ACCORDING TO OUR RESEARCH,

THE MORE THAT THESE BLOGGERS

STARTING TO DIMINISH.

TIME, AT A COMPANY IN ILLINOIS,

KILLING AT LEAST FIVE PEOPLE.

POLICE RAN INSIDE THE BILLING.

FIRST, NEWS ABOUT A PLEDGE FROM

POLITICIANS RIGHT ACROSS CANADA.

GENDER-BASED VIALS AGAINST WOMEN

AND GIRLS AND WORK ON CONCUSSION

PREVENTION AND AWARENESS.

>> ALL THIS WEEK WE'VE BROUGHT

YOU A JOINT INVESTIGATION BY CBC

NEWS AND CBC SPORTS BUT FOR THE

FIRST TIME THAT COUNTED SEXUAL

OFFENSE CONVICTIONS ACROSS ALL

SPORTS OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS.

THE FINDINGS?

HUNDREDS OF CASES DEEP.

AT LEAST 222 AMATEUR ATHLETIC

COACHES HAVE BEEN FOUND GUILTY.

MORE THAN 600 KIDS VICTIMS OF

THEIR OFFENSES.

OUR RINKS, GYMS, STADIUMS,

FIELDS, THEY ARE FAMILIAR PLACES

WHERE KIDS DEVELOP A SENSE OF

SELF-WHERE MANY PEOPLE VOLUNTEER

BUILD CAREERS.

SO HOW DO WE KEEP THEM SAFE FOR

>> Andrew: WE HAVE HAD SO MANY

QUESTIONS TO THESE STORIES, AND

YOU'RE SENDING THEM IN, SO LET'S

GET TO QUESTION NUMBER ONE.

>> MY NAME IS TARA, AND I'M THE

MOTHER OF A 17-YEAR-OLD HOCKEY

PLAYER.

THE QUESTION I HAVE FOR THE

PANEL IS HOW DO I TALK TO OUR

SON ABOUT SEXUAL ABUSE IN

SPORTS?

HOW DO WE EDUCATE HIM, AND WHAT

IS THE RIGHT PLACE TO ADDRESS

HIS CONCERNS.

>> Andrew: THAT IS A MULTIPART

QUESTION, AND KARYN, LET'S

ADDRESS THE FIRST PART.

TARA WANTS TO KNOW HOW TO TALK

TO HER SON ABOUT ABUSE.

>> SURE.

THERE'S THINGS LIKE IT'S YOUR

BODY, YOU GET TO SAY WHO TOUCHES

IT AND HOW.

YOU'VE GOT TO TRUST YOUR

FEELINGS.

IF YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE ABOUT

A SITUATION, TELL SOMEONE, AND

TELL SOMEONE YOU TRUST, AND KEEP

TELLING UNTIL THEY DO SOMETHING

ABOUT IT.

>> Andrew: YOU KNOW, IT'S HARD

TO SAY AS A BLANKET RULE, LIKE

GYMNASTICS, YOU DIDN'T SAY NO

TOUCHING.

IS THERE A HARD-AND-FAST RULE

YOU SHOULD TELL YOUR KIDS RIGHT

OUT OF THE GATE?

>> WELL, I THINK IT'S TOUCHING

SHOULD NEVER BE A SECRET.

IF IT'S A TOUCH THAT YOU CAN'T

TALK ABOUT, THEN, THERE'S

SOMETHING WRONG.

>> Andrew: LORRAINE, THE OTHER

PART OF TARA'S QUESTION IS ABOUT

RED FLAGS, HOW TO SPOT THEM.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELLER?

>> ANYTHING THAT PUTS A YOUNG

PERSON ALONE WITH A COACH IS AN

ISOLATING EVENT, WHETHER IT'S ON

SOCIAL MEDIA, IN TEXTING, OR OFF

THE FIELD OF PLAY, IN THE LOCKER

ROOM, AND SO THAT'S WHAT PARENTS

SHOULD WATCH AND TALK WITH THEIR

CHILDREN ABOUT.

WE'RE GREAT AT THE FIELD OF

PLAY, BUT WE'VE GOT TO TALK

ABOUT THE CLUB HOST AND MAKE

SURE NO ONE IS EVER LEFT ALONE.

>> Andrew: TEXTING IS A SIDE OF

ISOLATION THAT PARENTS MAY NOT

THINK ABOUT.

TEXTING OR SOCIAL MEDIA, WOULD

YOU CONSIDER THAT --

>> ABSOLUTELY.

WE RECOMMEND NO ONE-ON-ONE

COMMUNICATION ON FACEBOOK, ON

TWITTER, ON MESSAGING.

REALLY, THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE A

PERSON ON THE COPY LINE.

>> Andrew: TODD, WHEN YOU HEAR

THESE SORT OF SUGGESTIONS, ARE

THEY WRITTEN DOWN SORT OF

HARD-AND-FAST RULES IN THE

POLICY?

>> YOU KNOW, CERTAINLY, AS WE

HAVE BUILT OUR INFORMATION, WE

PUT TIPS IN.

WE ACTUALLY HAVE A PARENT GUIDE

ON OUR WEBSITE AT

HOCKEYCANADA.CA.

I THINK THERE ARE SOME ANSWERS

TO SOME OF THE QUESTIONS THAT

ARE ASKED HER.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES, WHERE DO I

GO.

>> Andrew: BUT THAT PUTS THE

ONUS ON PARENTS, THOUGH.

I'M THINKING ABOUT HARD POLICY

GUIDELINES THAT COACHES HAVE TO

FOLLOW: NO TEXTING, NO FOLLOWING

ON SOCIAL MEDIA, RULE OF TWO.

IF YOU HAVE A POWER

RELATIONSHIP, YOU SHOULD NOT BE

ALONE.

>> THERE ARE POLICIES COMING UP

ALL OVER THE COUNTRY WITH

RESPECT TO SOCIAL MEDIA, WITH

RESPECT TO DRESSING ROOM,

TWO-DEEP RULE.

THOSE ARE ALL REALLY IMPORTANT

STEPS, AND THAT EDUCATION PILLAR

IS SO, SO IMPORTANT IN GET THAT

GO TO THE COACH'S HANDS AND THAT

WAY SETTING THAT EXPECTATIONS.

>> Andrew: DAWN, I'M GOING TO

LET YOU JUMP IN HERE, BUT FIRST,

THERE IS ANOTHER QUESTION HERE

FROM TARA'S SON, STEVE.

>> HELLO.

I'M STEVE, AND I'M A 17-YEAR-OLD

HOCKEY PLAYER AND GOLFER.

MY QUESTION IS WHAT SHOULD I DO

IF I'M EVER IN THE SITUATION OF

AN ABUSIVE COACH, AND WHAT

SHOULD I DO TO FOLLOW UP THE

SCENARIO.

>> Andrew: YOU CAN SPEAK FROM

CANADA BASKETBALL'S POINT OF

VIEW.

WHAT IS THE RULE IN PLACE WHEN

AN ATHLETE ENCOUNTERS A

SITUATION THAT HE OR SHE FEELS

IS INAPPROPRIATE OR ABUSIVE?

>> YEAH.

I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT

FOR THEM TO GET INTO ACTION

RIGHT AWAY, TRUSTING FEELINGS,

TRUST THEIR GUT, AND GET

REPORTING.

>> Andrew: REPORTING TO WHOM?

>> ANYONE FROM THE PARENTS, FROM

THE CLUB ASSOCIATION.

I MEAN, FROM CANADA BASKETBALL'S

PER SPECTIVE, CANADA

BASKETBALL'S ALWAYS THERE FOR

OUR MEMBERS, AND IF THEY NEED TO

TURN TO ANYONE, THEY CAN

ABSOLUTELY TURN TO US AS WELL AS

OUR PROVINCIAL AND TERRITORIAL

ORGANIZATIONS.

BUT I THINK THE FIRST STEP IS TO

ACTUALLY JUST GET IN CONTACT.

>> Andrew: THERE'S ANOTHER

QUESTION THAT WE'VE GOT, AND IT

VERY MUCH RELATES TO THE PROCESS

THAT UNFOLDS.

HAVE A LISTEN.

>> MY NAME IS KYRA, AND I'M A

FORMER PROFESSIONAL SOCCER

PLAYER FROM VANCOUVER.

MY QUESTION IS DIRECTED TO THE

M.S.O.s, AND IT'S DO YOU THINK

THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO FAIRLY

INVESTIGATE YOURSELVES IN CASES

OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT BY YOUR

MEMBERS WITHOUT THERE BEING SOME

KIND OF A CONFLICT OF INTEREST,

AND DO YOU EVEN THINK THAT IT'S

FAIR THAT THE ONUS SHOULD BE ON

YOU TO DO SO.

>> Andrew: DAWN, MAYBE YOU CAN

START US OFF ON THAT ONE, THIS

IDEA OF AFFORDING' INTERNALLY.

>> I THINK WE HAVE POLICIES IN

PLACE.

IT'S ON OUR WEBSITE,

BASEBALLCANADA.CA.

IT'S NOT DONE WITHIN THE

FULL-TIME STAFF OR ANYONE WHO'S

AROUND THAT COACH, IT'S BEING

PUT TO A COMMITTEE THAT'S

OUTSIDE OF THE N.S.O., SO IT'S

VERY FAIR AND ARBITRARY TO DEAL

WITH IT.

>> Andrew: THIS IS A COMMITTEE

THAT'S APPOINTED BY WHOM?

THERE CAN STILL BE A CONFLICT

THERE.

>> YEAH.

WE -- THE INTENTION IS TO HAVE

NO CONFLICT.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE DO NOT

WANT THIS FOR OUR ATHLETES.

>> SORRY.

JUST TO JUMP IN, IT'S ACTUALLIY

SIMPLER THAN THAT.

ANY ALLEGATION OF SEXUAL ABUSE

OF A CHILD 18 OR UNDER HAS TO BE

REPORTED TO THE AUTHORITIES.

SO BEFORE IT GETS TO THAT POINT,

IT'S JUST TELL SOMEBODY YOU

TRUST, GET THAT PERSON TO DO

SOMETHING.

MAKE THAT CALL TO A CHILD

PROTECTION AGENCY OR POLICE, AND

THEN, DEPENDING ON WHAT THE

OUTCOME IS, THEN, YOUR PROCESS

COMES IN, BUT THE VERY FIRST

STEP IS MAKING THAT CALL TO

REPORT IT.

>> Andrew: LORRAINE, JUST ON THE

QUESTION.

OUGHT THERE TO BE A THIRD-PARTY

ENTITY THAT IS ALWAYS IN PLACE

TO ADDRESS THESE SORTS OF

COMPLAINTS?

>> YES, ABSOLUTELY, WE DO NEED

INDEPENDENCE BECAUSE PEOPLE FEAR

RETRIBUTION, WHETHER REAL OR

PERCEIVED.

A HELP LINE, WHETHER IT'S KIDS

AID OR CHILDREN'S AID, IT'S

IMPORTANT TO HELP THE SYSTEM

STAY TRANSPARENT AND

ACCOUNTABLE.

I DO THINK THESE INTERNAL

MECHANISMS ARE ALSO IMPORTANT

BECAUSE IT HELPS THE

ORGANIZATION TO UNDERSTAND

WHAT'S GOING ON, GET A BASELINE,

AND IF THEY DEAL WITH IT

EFFECTIVELY, THEY GET TO CORRECT

THE BEHAVIOUR AND FIX THE

SITUATION SO THEY ELIMINATE IT

FROM THEIR SPORT.

SO IT'S A BALANCE OF BOTH.

>> Andrew: BUT WHO PAYS FOR ALL

OF THAT TO SETUP A WHOLE

INFRASTRUCTURE AROUND THAT?

>> I THINK THAT IS WHAT THE

SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY WRESTLING

WITH COMPLETELY.

WE DO HAVE SOME ASSOCIATIONS IN

CANADA, AND MANITOBA IN PLACE.

WE HAVE A KIDS HELP PHONE, SO WE

CONTRIBUTE TO THAT ORGANIZATION

IN EXCHANGE FOR SUPPORT.

THERE ARE SO MANY EXISTING

AGENCIES, CHILD WELFARE, CHILD

SUPPORT AGENCIES THAT WE CAN

PARTNER WITH THESE PEOPLE, BUT

THERE IS A GAP IN THE SYSTEM,

AND WE DO NEED TO ADDRESS IT.

>> Andrew: SO ANY TIME YOU HAVE

A SORT OF POWER RELATIONSHIP

BETWEEN A COACH AND AN ATHLETE,

ANY TIME YOU RAISE AN ISSUE, NO

MATTER HOW YOU RAISE IT, IT CAN

FEEL LIKE YOU'RE -- YOU'RE

JEOPARDIZING EVERYTHING YOU

INVESTED, EVERYTHING THAT YOU --

ALL THE WORK THAT YOU'VE PUT

INTO IT, THAT YOU PAY COMPROMISE

THE RELATIONSHIP SOMEHOW BY

RAISING AN ISSUE, AND THE LESS

EGREGIOUS THE OFFENSE BECOMES,

THE HARDER THE QUESTION IS.

AN ATHLETE HAS TO ASK THIS

POSSIBLE QUESTION OF THEMSELVES,

IS THIS WORTH RAISING?

>> ANY GOOD COACH WANTS TO MAKE

SURE THAT THEIR ATHLETE PERFORMS

TO THEIR BEST ABILITY, AND IF

THEY'RE DOING SOMETHING THAT'S

MAKING AN ATHLETE UNCOMFORTABLE

OR NOT BEING ABLE TO PERFORM AT

LEVEL, ANY ETHICAL COACH WOULD

TAKE THAT INFORMATION AND MAKE

THOSE ADJUSTMENTS SO THAT THEIR

ATHLETE WOULD BE IN THE BEST

SITUATION FOR THEM TO PERFORM.

SO I DON'T THINK IT'S AN

EITHER-OR.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY I HAVE TO

BE UNCOMFORTABLE IN ORDER TO

STAY WITH THIS COACH OR IN THIS

CLUB OR IN A SITUATION.

THERE'S LOTS OF CAUSES.

WE'RE IN A BIG COUNTRY,

FORTUNATELY, AND YOU HAVE A LOT

OF CHOICES TO BE THERE, AND IT'S

NOT AN EITHER-OR.

>> Andrew: WE HAVE ANOTHER

QUESTION, COMING FROM JAY, ONE

OF THE COACHES.

>> HI.

I'M JAY, AND I'M A FATHER OF TWO

AND COACH IN MULTIPLE SPORTS.

EVERY YEAR, WE STRUGGLE FINDING

ENOUGH COACHES.

IT SEEMS IF YOU'RE BREATHING,

WE'LL TAKE YOU.

SO MY QUESTION IS, WHAT CAN WE

DO AT THE GRASSROOTS LEVEL TO

INCREASE MORE COACHES TO

INCREASE THE POOL OF PEOPLE THAT

WE'RE PULLING FROM SO MAYBE WE

DON'T HAVE TO KEEP THE COACHES

THAT WE'D PREFER NOT TO.

>> Andrew: SO THIS IS A REAL

REALITY QUESTION.

TODD, HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE --

>> YOU KNOW, I THINK WE WANT TO

MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE BRINGING

COACHES IN AND WE'RE GIVING THEM

ALL THE TOOLS THEY NEED, ALL THE

RESOURCES THEY NEED TO BE GOOD

COACHES AND TO KNOW WHAT IS

CROSSING THE LINE AND WHAT IS

NOT CROSSING THE LINE.

>> Andrew: RIGHT.

LORRAINE, LET ME ASK YOU ABOUT

THAT.

DOES IT FEEL LIKE A SAFE

ENVIRONMENT FROM A COACHING PER

PERSPECTIVE, AND I WONDER IF

THERE'S AN ANXIETY FROM COACHES

IN THE ERA WE'RE IN COMPARED TO

>> THERE IS AN ANXIETY FOR

CERTAIN, AND I THINK WHAT MAKES

GREAT COACHES EVEN GREATER IS

WHEN THEY EMBRACE IT AND BE

TRANSPARENT ABOUT HOW THEY'RE

WORKING IN A SAFE SPORTING

ENVIRONMENT.

SO THE RECOMMENDATION I HAVE FOR

COACHES IS DON'T SHY AWAY.

BE VERY PUBLIC IN YOUR

CONVERSATION.

WALK-THROUGH THE RULES WITH

PARTICIPANTS AND PARENTS.

TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY SHOULD BE

EXPECTING IN THE CLUBHOUSE, IN

THE TRAINING GROUND, ON THE AWAY

GAMES, AND MAKE EVERYONE

UNDERSTAND IT.

GREAT COACHES BECOME EVEN

GREATER WHEN THEY SHARE IN THIS

TYPE OF CHALLENGE TO MAKE SPORT

BETTER.

>> Andrew: WE HAVE ONE MORE

QUESTION THAT WE WANT TO GET TO.

THIS IS FROM SHAMIR.

>> HELLO.

MY NAME IS SHAMIR.

I'M A COACH AND DIRECTOR OVER AT

KANATA BASKETBALL YOUTH

ASSOCIATION.

WE SERVE APPROXIMATELY 1,000

KIDS IN KANATA AND NEIGHBOURING

AREA.

I'M ALSO A FATHER OF TWO BOYS,

AGE NINE AND 11.

HOW DO WE AS SMALLER

ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE RUN

ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY BY

VOLUNTEERS, HOW DO WE ASSESS

WHERE WE STAND WITH REGARDS TO

PROTECTING OUR YOUTH AND WHERE

THE GAPS EXIST?

>> Andrew: SO GETTING IT RIGHT

DOWN, RIGHT, TO THE CLUB LEVEL

AND OFFERING THEM THE SUPPORT

THAT THEY NEED, DAWN?

>> YEAH.

I MEAN, WE'VE GOT A COUPLE

DIFFERENT THINGS.

I THINK FIRST IS, YOU KNOW, WE

HAVE, AS I SAY, CLUB EXCELLENCE.

IT'S A STANDARD THAT WE HAVE ON

OUR WEBSITE, AGAIN,

BASKETBALL.CA, AND WE TALK ABOUT

WHAT ARE SOME OF THOSE STANDARDS

TO BECOME AN EXCELLENT CLUB.

KNOWING THAT THERE ARE DIFFERENT

CLUBS AROUND THE COUNTRY AND

DIFFERENT RESOURCES, THEY HAVE

SOMETHING THEY CAN MEASURE

THEMSELVES AGAIN.

>> Andrew: IS THERE MORE,

THOUGH?

YOU THINK OF PUBLISHING POLICIES

AND GUIDELINES AND RULES AND

SUGGESTIONS ON WEBSITES.

SOMETIMES THAT 'S WHERE THEY

STAY.

>> FIRST, WE'VE GOT TO PROVIDE

COMMUNITY-USED TOOLS.

I'LL START WITH EDUCATION.

WE STARTED WITH AN INCLASS

SCENARIO 15 YEARS AGO.

WE MOVED ON-LINE AND NOW WE'RE

SEEING THAT GROW IN OUR CULTURE.

IT'S PART OF EVERYDAY BUSINESS.

I THINK IT TAKES TIME, IT TAKES

PATIENCE AND NOT TO WAIT TILL

IT'S PERFECT TO PUT SOMETHING IN

PLACE.

>> Andrew: WHAT ABOUT MANDATING

CLUBS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY

FOLLOW BEST PRACTICES AND BEST

GUIDELINES AND FOR THERE TO BE

CONSEQUENCES IF THEY DON'T?

>> WELL, I THINK SOME SPORT

ORGANIZATIONS HAVE DONE THAT AND

WE'RE SEEING GOVERNMENTS

SHIFTING TO MAKE SURE JUST LIKE

THEY DO WITH CONCUSSION POLICIES

THAT THEY HAVE SAFE SPORT

POLICIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

ONE THING I MIGHT ADD HERE IS

CLUBS NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT AS

NOT A PASS-FAIL.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT UNVAILING,

IT'S NOT I'M IMPROVING.

SAFETY'S NOT AN ENDPOINT, IT'S A

JOURNEY.

TO KEEP THAT CONVERSATION ALIVE

AND THAT'S A POINT TO GETTING

BETTER AS A CLUB.

>> KAREN, TODD, DAWN, LORRAINE,

RELATIVELY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME,

Sen. Kamala Harris gets California Gov. Gavin Newsoms endorsement for president Los Angeles Times - Duration: 1:42.

Sen. Kamala Harris gets California Gov. Gavin Newsoms endorsement for president Los Angeles Times

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he is endorsing California Sen. Kamala Harris for president during a Friday television appearance on MSNBC.

Im very enthusiastic about Kamala Harris, Newsom said in an interview with Chris Hayes, host of All In. Ill be endorsing her candidacy for president. Ive known her for decades I think the American people could not do better.

Though not surprising given the long political relationship between the two former San Francisco politicians, Newsoms support could play a pivotal role in Harris prospects in an increasingly crowded Democratic field of presidential candidates. California lawmakers decided in 2017 to move the states primary to early March in an effort to make a bigger impact in the presidential sweepstakes.

Newsom said he got to know Harris well when he served as mayor of San Francisco at the same time Harris was the district attorney of the liberal Bay Area city.

His announcement follows endorsements of Harris from labor activist Dolores Huerta, co founder of the United Farm Workers, and Rep. Barbara Lee D Oakland .

Since announcing her candidacy in January, Harris has propelled herself to the front of the pack of Democratic candidates lining up to challenge Republican President Trump in 2020. Harris spent Friday campaigning in South Carolina, a pivotal early presidential primary state, starting her two day swing at a town hall in Charleston.

Harris and Newsom are longtime friends and political allies. They were both mentored by former San Francisco Mayor and state Assembly Speaker Willie Brown and served in City Hall at the same time. They have also inhabited the same social circles and vacationed together.

Despite that, the two politicians were considered potential rivals after one of Californias U.S. Senate seats was vacated by the retiring Barbara Boxer in 2015. In the end, Harris jumped into the race to replace Boxer, and Newsom announced that he would run for California governor in 2018.

Fantasy Premier League tips: Best Fantasy Football transfers for FPL GW18 - Duration: 4:33.

Fantasy Premier League is gathering pace with the festive fixtures pilling up, so managers are working hard to avoid another irregular deadline ahead of GW18

Liverpool's Friday night clash with Wolves see the transfer window close a day early for FPL gaffers, so they need to sort out their squads in good time ahead of the upcoming round

Selection headaches involving Sergio Aguero's fitness and Harry Kane's goalscoring form are bound to trigger a host of moves in the market, while a number of bargain options have emerged as 'enablers'

The likes of Newcastle full-back Javier Manquillo and West Ham ace Robert Snodgrass could free up funds for premium purchases, but who will you splash your cash on? Express Sport has rounded up the best Fantasy Premier League transfers you can make ahead of GW18: GK: Joe Hart (Burnley) – £4

5m So unlucky not to bag a clean sheet against Tottenham after denying Kane and co

for so long. Arsenal away from home up next but then a run of five fixtures which score no more than three in the Fixture Difficulty Rankings (FDR)

DEF: Javier Manquillo (Newcastle United) – £4.3m Returned to the Magpies defence in recent weeks and provided an assist in their vital win over Huddersfield

The Spaniard scooped all three bonus points from the 1-0 victory over the Terriers and could be an excellent bargain buy with Fulham up next

DEF: Nacho Monreal (Arsenal) – £5.4m Back from injury against Southampton and should retain his spot with clean sheets expected against Southampton, Burnley and Brighton

DEF: David Luiz (Chelsea) – £5.7m The cheapest way into the Chelsea rear-guard with a fantastic run of fixtures over the festive period

MID: Robert Snodgrass (West Ham United) – £5.4m The driving force behind West Ham's four-match winning run, popping up with a goal and all three bonus points last time out against Fulham

MID: Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur) – £9.3m The Dane has been used sparingly by Mauricio Pochettino in recent weeks but stepped off the bench to score the winner against Burnley

Should play more regularly with the Champions League group stages out of the way, and a run of one match in 10 ranked higher than three in the FDR is reason for investment

MID: Leroy Sane (Manchester City) – £9.6m The man in form now for Pep Guardiola's side, helping himself to two more assists against Everton with Crystal Palace up next

FWD: Raul Jimenez (Wolverhampton Wanderers) – £6.2m The Portuguese striker bagged his fifth goal of the season against Bournemouth and added another three bonus points to his ever-growing tally

FWD: Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) – £6.9m Beginning to look like the go-to option for United in attack and will hope to wreak havoc against Cardiff and Huddersfield next

FWD: Roberto Firmino (Liverpool) – £9.2m The Liverpool front three are beginning to click and a break from European football could see Firmino come good despite tricky matches against Arsenal and Manchester City

Royal Az - Australian taxpayers forked out $411,000 for Prince Harry and Meghan's royal visit - Duration: 1:22.

Documents released by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet on Saturday show the bulk of the cost for the 16-day tour in October 2018 was spent on international and domestic travel, including flights, accommodation, meals and incidentals, to the tune of $237,700

34. The bill for ground and water transport came to $102,117.07, hospitality and event-related costs were $46,039

47, while miscellaneous costs such as printing, official photography and "VIP facilitation" came to $24,723

08. "The cost of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's trip to Australia totalled $410,579

96," a spokesman for PMC said. "This expenditure meets official procurement guidelines

" Overall, the trip worked out to be $63,558 cheaper than 2014's 10-day visit by Prince William, wife Kate and young Prince George

For that trip, taxpayers forked out about $474,137, not including security and GST, with $251,338 spent on transportation, $85,366 on media liaison, $73,638 on domestic travel such as meals and accommodation, and $59,486 on hospitality and event-related costs

The bill for Harry and Meghan's trip was also less than half that of Prince Charles and Camilla's trip to Australia for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which cost taxpayers more than $1 million

The newlywed couple — who revealed they were expecting a baby shortly after touching down in Sydney — also visited cities in Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand

They had 76 official engagements for the Australian leg of their tour. Those included a trip to Taronga Zoo, the Opera House and the drought-stricken outback town of Dubbo, the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games and a meeting with indigenous leaders on Queensland's Fraser Island

Mixed results for Tiger after 30 holes at Riviera - Duration: 3:11.

LOS ANGELES -- On a cool, wet, mostly miserable day, Tiger Woods played more holes in competition than at any point in his comeback from spinal fusion surgery nearly two years ago

And with mixed results that left him frustrated. Woods played 30 holes at Riviera Country Club on Friday and lamented a poor day on the greens as he bogeyed his final two in the rain to finish at 1-under par at the Genesis Open

Justin Thomas, who played alongside him with Rory McIlroy, is at 10 under, tied for the lead with Adam Scott

Editor's PicksThomas, Scott tied for 1st at rain-delayed Riviera Justin Thomas and Adam Scott were each at 10 under par and shared the lead when the Genesis Open was halted by darkness Friday night at Riviera

Explaining Tiger Woods' odd, winless history at Riviera Tiger Woods grew up near Riviera Country Club

He knows the place, says it fits his eye. Yet it is the tournament he has played the most without a win

Why is that?1 Related Woods is tied for 55th place, and like last year here, likely must battle to make the 36-hole cut with half the field yet to begin the second round

"It was a tough day,'' said Woods, who will play the remaining six holes of his second round Saturday morning starting at 7 a

m. PT (10 a.m. ET). "I'm stiff right now. It got pretty chilly towards the end, the ball wasn't going very far

It was just amazing how well and how good [Thomas] putted today, he made everything today

He made tough conditions look easy.'' Woods played 29 holes on the Saturday of the PGA Championship last August, completing 11 holes of the second round before playing the entire third round

In each case, he shot 4-under 66 and went on to finish second behind Brooks Koepka

But it was 90-plus degrees in St. Louis, a far cry from the damp conditions Woods faced Friday

This is his second start of 2019, after he finished tied for 20th last month at the Farmers Insurance Open

After a slow start Friday saw him bogey two of his first seven holes, Woods responded with four consecutive birdies starting at the eighth, but made a bogey at the par-5 17th and settled for a 1-under 70

Following a short break, he began the second round on the 10th hole and birdied two of the first three, but made bogeys at the 16th and 18th

After rolling in a 40-footer for an eagle at the first hole, Woods suffered in the rain, struggling to hit good shots, leading to bogeys at the second and third holes before play was called due to darkness

"I putted awful today,'' said Woods, who needed 34 putts over his opening 18 holes, when he hit 17 greens in regulation

"I didn't hit it that bad, felt like I controlled it well enough and just a terrible day on the greens

'' Woods hosts the Genesis Open, which is run by his TGR Foundation. But the event has always given him fits

In 12 previous appearances, 11 at Riviera, Woods has never won -- the most times he's played any tournament in his career without a victory

Last year, he missed the cut in his first appearance here since 2006.

San Jose Police Department Chief Eddie Garcia provides updates on the standoff with a suspected armed hijacker.

The San Jose police chief on Friday praised the actions of the UPS driver taken hostage by an armed carjacker, who was eventually shot and killed Thursday by authorities on city streets.

The UPS driver purposely drove slowly over spikes to stop the vehicle, according to San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia. In order to keep police on their trail, the driver said he told the hijacker that UPS box trucks could only go 50 miles an hour.

"This guys amazing, I really need to give him an application or something," Garcia said at a news conference Friday. "He purposely drove over the spike strips ... they actually wanted him to drive faster and he lied and told them the UPS truck couldn"t go over 50 miles per hour because he didn"t want the police to lose the truck."

The chase began late Thursday afternoon after a sheriff deputy approached a suspicious SUV illegally parking by the Ohlone Chynoweth VTA light rail station.

A standoff in San Jose on Thursday ended with authorities killing a gunman they say hijacked a UPS truck with the driver inside. According to dispatch call records, the driver said he wanted to die.Kris Sanchez reports.

Mark Morasky and a female suspect identified by police as 24 year old Joanna Macy Rogers were inside the vehicle and they took off as soon as they recognized the approaching deputy. Officers later relocated the vehicle nearby and thats when thewoman fired one shot at the sheriffs deputy vehicle.

Authorities said the woman shot at officers at least three more times during the pursuit along Highway 87.

The SUV exited onCurtner Avenue and the suspects abandoned their vehicle. Thats when they spotted the UPS driver walking, and forced him at gunpoint to get into his box truck and drive, according to Garcia.

San Jose police then joined sheriffs deputies in the chase. The UPS driver eventually took the exit on Skyport Drive and the pursuit turned into an intense standoff on North First Street and Trimble Road.

A dispatch call from thestandoffconfirmed what friends of the suspect told law enforcement officials, that he didnt want to live through the confrontation with officers.

"The suspect also said that he wanted to die tonight," an officer can be heard telling the dispatch center in the call before Morasky was eventually shot and killed by police after he ran from aUPS truck he allegedly hijacked with a shotgun.

A Santa Clara County Sheriffs Office pursuit of a UPS truck ended at First Street and Trimble Road in San Jose and turned into an hours long standoff before an armed suspect fled on foot and apparently was shot by officers. Sergio Quintana reports.

Several of Moraskys friends had been talking with him on the phone, trying to calm the situation.

"He was scared," friend Amanda Bazzani said. "He called me and said, I love you, Im in a standoff. And then he was saying goodbye, and I was like, No, no, dont say that."

Macy Rogers was released from the UPS box truck and taken into custody, according to officials. The unidentified UPS driver who was taken hostage was safely released.

Chief Garcia said Macy Rogers was charged withattempted murder, car jacking, kidnapping and shooting at occupied vehicles.

Morasky ran out of the truck with a shotgun and was shot by a San Jose police officer. Investigators later made a grim discovery in the SUV Morasky and Macy Rogers were driving. "They had the loaded shotgun of course, additional shotgun shells, but also duct tape, a machete and zip ties." Sheriff Laurie Smith said.

Morasky was on parole from armed robbery and carjacking charges. He was sentenced to five years in prison, and served four years in 2012, according to Garcia.

Raw video of the moment a suspect in a San Jose standoff exits a UPS truck and flees on foot.

The officer who shot and killed Morasky has been placed on paid administrative leave. Internal Affairs and the District Attorneys office continue to investigate the incident.

Manchester United stars Pogba, Rashford and Co arrive for training - Duration: 4:06.

The feelgood factor at Old Trafford is back under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who has revealed he's taken the workaholic approach that made legendary figure Sir Alex Ferguson so successful

Since Solskjaer's appointment as interim manager in December, United have enjoyed a stellar run of unbeaten results - winning nine of their 10 games in all competitions

Solskjaer's methods have been compared to his legendary mentor Ferguson, and the Norwegian is even adopting his working hours as he strains every sinew to restore the club to it's former glories

'Now I understand why the gaffer [Sir Alex Ferguson] used to be in so early,' he said in an interview with Sky Sports when asked about the demands in the hotseat

'How did I manage to sleep so long when I was a player? It's all that I hoped for and expected really

And a little bit more.'Like Ferguson did, Solskjaer also spoke of squad rotatition as the club have to contend with the Champions League and FA Cup as well as fighting for a top-four position

'I knew the gaffer was like that. I have always been like this myself back home in Molde

You do plan ahead and I think I have got my team quite ready for the full month,' he added

'Depending on form as well, I think I have more or less picked my team.'You have got to have different ways of winning games and with our squad you can pick players who suit this team and that team

Goals are scored by counter-attacks, set-plays and breaking teams down when they drop deep, so you need to have all those three aspects

'You have to find a way to win a game. That's not up to me or (coaches) Mick [Phelan] or Kieran [McKenna] or Michael [Carrick] to tell them beforehand

Every game is different. We might score the first goal and it's a different game

'After their 'blip' against Burnley, Manchester United are back to winning ways following their 1-0 triumph at Leicester on Sunday

And Solskjaer had his players back in for training on Wednesday morning as they prepared for Saturday's Premier League trip to Fulham

Marcus Rashford, the matchwinner against Leicester, was among those seen arriving to their facilities at the Aon Training Complex

The forward is in a rich vein of form as is Paul Pogba who assisted him on Sunday and was also present for training

Jesse Lingard gave a thumbs up on his way to Carrington - fresh from spending Tuesday in London at the launch of a media event

The aforementioned trio started in attack with Alexis Sanchez and the Chilean was spotted driving into training

The likes of Chris Smalling, Fred and Andreas Pereira didn't play a part at the King Power Stadium but will hope to stake their claim for a first-team place at the weekend

Diogo Dalot was another who didn't feature and will be hoping to push forward his case against Fulham

The defender was spotted driving into training with a phone case with a picture of himself in action for United on the back

United will move into fourth place with victory at Fulham and could remain there if Chelsea lose at Manchester City on Sunday

Thomas, Scott tied for 1st at rain-delayed Riviera - Duration: 4:43.

LOS ANGELES -- Justin Thomas was playing well enough to want to keep going, with six birdies in a seven-hole stretch before it was too dark to continue Friday at the Genesis Open

It also was raining. It was cold. And he already had been slogging through Riviera Country Club for nine hours

Editor's PicksMixed results for Tiger after 30 holes at Riviera Tiger Woods finished 30 holes on a rainy day at Riviera Country Club with mixed results Friday

Woods is in a tie for 55th place at 1 under, and will likely see himself battling to make the 36-hole cut at the Genesis Open

Tiger's Genesis Open to get status bump in '20 Beginning in 2020, the Genesis Open will have a significantly higher purse, offer a three-year PGA Tour exemption to the winner (up from two years) and an invitational field that will be reduced to 120 players

1 Related "It's hard playing 30 holes, but it's really hard when it's raining and it's soft," Thomas said after making 14 birdies on a long day that sent him home tied for the lead with Adam Scott at 10 under par

"My legs are tired, so I just need to go home and rest and get some food and try to go to sleep early as I can

" Thomas, who opened with a 5-under 66 in the morning, was 5 under for his second round through 12 holes

He had an eight-hole stretch when he didn't make a par (six birdies, two bogeys), ending with a two-putt par on No

3. Scott was in the group right behind him and just as efficient, also opening with a 66 and reaching 5 under

His only blemish was a long three-putt for bogey on the par-5 17th on a course he loves

Scott won at Riviera in the rain 14 years ago, a tournament that was cut short to 36 holes and decided in a playoff

"I just got the momentum going, and I kept it going," Scott said. Tiger Woods had a few big moments that didn't last long

He had four consecutive birdies around the turn in the morning, a streak that ended with a three-putt bogey at No

12. He had four three-putts in the first round for a 70. Thomas was in the right rough after hitting driver 260 yards, leaving him 222 yards to a back pin on an elevated green

He pounded 5-wood to 10 feet and made his final birdie of the day. J.B. Holmes was another shot behind at the turn

Holmes was the 18-hole leader thanks to a hole-in-one on the par-3 sixth hole, followed by a birdie that led to an 8-under 63

At the time, he was one shot ahead of Jordan Spieth, who played all of six holes Friday to complete his bogey-free 64 in calm conditions

Spieth figured it would be like that all day. He was wrong. Light rain fell as Woods, Thomas and Rory McIlroy (3 under through 12) were finishing the first round

It never really stopped the rest of the day. The start of the tournament was delayed seven hours Thursday, so just about everyone who makes the cut will face long days at some point

The second round resumes Saturday at 7 a.m. PT (10 a.m. ET), and the other half of the field starts their second round at 7:40 a

m. The cut figures to be made Saturday afternoon, leaving no more than about two hours of play the rest of the day

Those in or around the lead after 36 holes can expect to go 36 more on Sunday. Dustin Johnson played 36 holes on Sunday when he won the Genesis Open two years ago

Long before it was getting dark, Holmes could see just fine when he hit 8-iron to the back pin at No

6, located just to the left of the bunker in the middle of the green. "Hit it exactly how I wanted it and it went in," Holmes said

"It looked good the whole time." Spieth took advantage of the restart Thursday. His opening shot on the par-4 10th hit the cart path twice and went into shin-high grass so thick that it would have been hard work just to get it out

The round was scrapped and he returned for a routine par. He made the rest look easy, except for the 13th hole, where he hooked his tee shot into a eucalyptus tree, played a slice on the outer side of the trees and got up-and-down for par

"It was probably better than any of the birdies," he said. He holed two chips for birdie, one of them on the toughest hole at Riviera on No

12, birdied all three of the par 5s and made a pair of birdie putts from about 10 feet when he returned Friday morning

He said those six holes were the best his putter has felt in some time. "I was able to kind of figure out a way to feel some freedom in the stroke and I was able to roll a couple of those in," he said

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Sen. Kamala Harris gets California Gov. Gavin Newsoms endorsement for president Los Angeles Times - Duration: 1:44.

Borussia Dortmund 'name price for Jadon Sancho as Man Utd prepare transfer' - Duration: 1:35.

Manchester United are reportedly ready to splash £70million to meet Borussia Dortmund's asking price and snap up Jadon Sancho in the summer

According to The Sun , the German club have named their figure for the 18-year-old winger with the Red Devils ready to meet their demands

And in a strange twist, the potential deal would see local rivals Manchester City net around £10

5million thanks to their 15% sell-on clause.  If Sancho does return to the Premier League, Dortmund are set to make massive profit having signed the teenager for just £8million in a shock move from City in August 2017

Caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to have pinpointed right wing as a potential area for upgrade in the Red Devils side and England international Sancho fits the bill

Solskjaer now has a short-term dilemma in the position with Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial sidelined

A summer move for Sancho would be a major statement and a challenge he could find tough to turn down after establishing himself as one of the top talents in world football
