you've noticed from the thumbnail of this video I'm talking about what I mean when
I say the real Mexico City and you'll understand when I explain a bit in a
minute that this is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Look at the
chorizo, that is, sorry, CHORIZO. So ask yourself the question, do those locations
really represent Mexico City as a Mexican?
(MUSIC)
Hola buenas tardes and welcome back to Mexico City today is Thursday and I'm in
Colonia Napoles which is where I live at the moment, anyway I'm moving next
week and today we're gonna do a bit of a sit-down talking video because there's a
couple of things I want to discuss that have come up recently in comments to
videos and I thought would be good to do a video addressing those points and also
today's video is the return of cooking with David yes if you saw the video I
did on New Year's Day in the UK you'll notice that I've started a new thing this year -
cooking or at least attempting to cook so we're near a market and we're gonna
do a bit of shopping first we might go to a supermarket if I can't find what I need,
but let's go anyway
(MUSIC)
so before we go shopping I found this lovely little seating area in this park
let's have a sit down how sweet it's one of those little
outdoor chessboard things you see everywhere except there's no old men
playing today so this is my seat. so the subject of today's discussion is
in some way related to the point of language so what better time to talk
about the sponsors of this video - Italki - yes that's right once again I have
partnered with Italki, in this video, if you don't know who they are, where
have you been because Italki are an absolutely fantastic online language
learning platform that allows you to not only learn a language from scratch but
also improve your level of language, it could be English could be Spanish could
be Brazilian Portuguese could be Russian whatever, now when I'm walking around
Mexico City I see everywhere these signs we can pull off the bit of paper on the
lamppost saying improve your Spanish call this number
just yesterday outside BuenaVista forum shopping center I was asked by a
guy if I would like conversational English lessons which is quite ironic
considering I teach English on Italki. one of the great things about
Italki is the fact that you can speak to a native speaker so think about it
you know when you're in a classroom you're vying for the attention of
possibly a Mexican teacher or Russian teacher whatever you know, the language
that they teach you will be exact and correct from a textbook or whatever
but it might not be the language that is actually spoken in real life, the other
great thing about Italki is that it's hugely affordable so you can find
teachers on there as low as eight dollars an hour ten dollars an hour
depending on their experience. now if you're interested in using Italki to
improve whatever language as I said you can check down in the description below
or in the pinned comment where you can get ten u.s. dollars in Italki credits
when you sign up to Italki how awesome is that so get going with your language
learning. I just noticed that I am living very close to the World Trade Center in
Napoles and thank you for all of your suggestions in the last video where we
looked at areas where you can see the city from above this is one of them it
was gonna be in that video but it was just gonna be too long otherwise at the
top is a revolving restaurant where you can get amazing views of the city so
potentially that might be another video soon
Right, cooking time or should I say shopping time so we have
tortillas here I think these are like flour tortillas yep and also we have
lots of cheese my favorite cheese in Mexico, Queso Oaxaca, Quesillo,
beautiful look at all that cheese
I'm really happy I have queso Oaxaca and chorizo, how good is that pronunciation normally in
English I would say CHORITZO, lots of Americans have commented on that by the
way with the difference in pronunciation and you know what you've noticed from
the thumbnail of this video I'm talking about what I mean when I say the real
Mexico City and you understand what I explained a bit
this is a perfect example of what I'm talking about so I need some coriander
sorry cilantro and also some tortillas I think that's everything I've got salsa
I've got frijoles at home let's continue
I can't believe I almost forgot, limes, beautiful an essential ingredient in what I'm making today, one peso for
one lime amazing
I'm really happy I really enjoyed that experience you know I was
that close to go to the supermarket today I didn't expect this market to be
here I don't think it's here every day I can remember but you know I spent about
fifty pesos on this which is insane you know if you did that in a supermarket like
Bodega Aurrera or something it would be like ten times as much maybe probably not
that much but you know that market it's made my day because the people were very
welcoming and friendly and you know he understood my Spanish wasn't great but I
was making an effort you know and it was just brilliant you know you cannot feel
more like a Chilango if you go to places like this it was
just awesome you know so when you come to Mexico City come out your comfort
zone and go to places like this it might be daunting and might be sick
you know having to speak Spanish to locals but it's brilliant you know I've
got everything I need to make tacos con chorizo yes right while I was walking
home I found somewhere that sold the tortillas I was looking for you know
they're like the darker kind I don't know what the differences are
there's no there tastes nice so now I have literally a million tortillas with
this place it for a chill angle is never a bad thing! right I'm home
I've locked the cat in my bedroom because there would be carnage if I let
the cat out and when I put my hair in a ponytail that means I mean business so
let's take a look at the ingredients - ingredientes? I just made up a word, so
let's just assume for a moment that I vaguely know anything about food and
cooking by the way cooking with David is a joke if you don't get the humor so
I've laid my ingredients out lovely these are exactly what I was looking for so they
have that like rubbery texture that I really like it's the best obviously it's
not like that when you cook it I have a lime lovely look at the chorizo that
is sorry Chorizo so that is proper Chorizo so it's nice and soft you know
with the stuff you get from the supermarket it's always really hard okay
so the queso oaxaca look at that it's beautiful
and I think I've got a bit too much and coriander again I've got too much but
you know that will last I have frijoles Negros,
frijoles amazing and I have salsa oh god the dog go away dog! now when it
comes to coriander what I used to do in the UK I used to freeze it and then just
scrunch it up in the packet or whatever but obviously I've got time to freeze
things so I'm just gonna flipping rip it up you know it goes on that plate not
the other one beautiful I don't like a lot of coriander on tacos con
Chorizo so you know just a little bit I could use a knife or scissors I
guess but screw that! the queso Oaxaca oh look at the stringiness of it that is
proper queso Oaxaca not like the ones you get in Oxxo you know you know what
I mean the big the big lumps of queso Oaxaca so I'm just gonna rip it up a bit
like that you know just ike you get it on a taco! go away dog! which way
do I cut it that'll do I don't know how to cut limes beautiful we have lime right it's time
to start cooking now someone told me I think it might be Becca hi Becca how are you
doing that you're meant to warm the tortillas before and I agree because I
think it gets rid of that like rubbery texture so I will just warm them for a
little bit turn them over you know maybe Brown them slightly I'll
God my gosh shouldn't I put the oil in, the dog is not eating the chorizo
happy days. okay I think the oil might have been a bad decision but who
cares it's all gonna go down the same hole in the end innit, oh my god I'm so bloody
English. You what! so that's suitably warm I think it's time to move on to the
chorizo let's chuck the chorizo in sorry, chorizo, oh bollocks, you know what I mean
in the pan I think you have to cook it yeah you do, course you do, wonderful so I'm
enjoying cooking with David sorry about the loud saucepan or whatever it's
calledI dunno, who am i, Gordon Ramsay? okay while I have the chorizo on a
low heat I sound like Nigella Dawson I'm gonna
put some frijoles the black bean frijoles in the middle
there lovely let's do that with all three of them I had to let the cat out
by the way cuz I was worried she was gonna piss in my bed luckily she hasn't
dog go away! right is it recording yes it is the chorizo is complete
let's put some of that on it I don't know if it's cooked but you know you're
probably writing in the comments right now David it's not cooked, oh i don't care, it's
meat you know whatever it looks all right to me
and it tastes alright to I did try a little bit so don't pani, right maybe a little bit more on the other one, lovely oh look
at the Oaxaca queso Oh God look at this
I am literally at Chilango right now, I get the Metro I make
tacos con chorizo, I fail at Spanish pronunciation ok little bit more oh
that's a bit no it's not stringy enough hang on a moment
adjust the cheese the cat is approaching ok so I think that looks think about
presentation David ok so that's that done what's next coriander Oh why did I
say that with a Spanish accent cilantro like I said I don't mean like a lot of
it on tacos a little bit is fine for a little bit of flavor
beautiful I meant to put that in the oven now I mean on the thing or don't
eat like that I think I'll eat it like that it's hot enough inside the taco not on
the outside remember Tlaquepaque and the
barrage of hate comments actually wasn't hate comments it was nice
comments advising me that you put salsa inside a taco stunning oh this
looks amazing I'm so proud of myself! and voila or whatever it is chef people say
there's my complete meal tacos con chorizo it looks very much like what I
had in Puerto Vallarta if you remember let's see what it's like oh I'm so
excited I'm really pleasing myself beautiful
oMG I'm not blowing my own trumpet but these are amazing, the lime really adds
a something of flavor to it think of vocabulary David well my screen
is frozen cat go away yeah coriander lime, chorizo, queso oaxaca
frijoles, mmm this is amazing! right I'm stuffed with food I hope you enjoyed
this edition of cooking with David it was a lot better than the last one well
it definitely was let's face it on to the crux of this video so anything the
earth in a thumbnail it's called what is the real Mexico City and very often
frequently in comments lately particularly on videos like Tepito and
the one I did in doctores last year I always say that it's like the real
Mexico City and there seems to be a lot of confusion about what I mean by that
and that's all I wanted to explain that you know for me the word real has kind
of two meanings in this context so you can understand that somewhere is real or
fake or not genuine and that's like a negative connotation but that's not what
I mean I mean real in a completely positive way
and a synonym that I would use for real would be authentic and in the Tepito
video I did say that purposely to avoid those kind of comments and it's very
much in a positive way so you know when you think of a city there will be places
that tourists will go to you know for example Mexico City it might be Condesa, Coyoacan, the Zocalo, Gran Hotel Hotel whatever however ask yourself a
question do those locations really represent Mexico City as a Mexican maybe
not because you know Mexico City is huge and it's diverse and there are so many
different areas there's so much disparity in terms of wealth affluence
you know that kind of thing and I'll give an example for me as well
so I'm from the UK I grew up in the west of London my whole life born and bred
and you know from a foreigners point of view or a tourist point of view you know
you think of paste like Buckingham Palace or Madame Tussauds or Harry
Potter World I don't know I don't watch Harry Potter
I've never seen Harry Potter in my life just to clarify but you know those areas
don't represent London for me you know go out somewhere in the West where I'm
from or go somewhere in the east where I used to work for many years and you'll
see a more gritty authentic real representation of that city you know
there's crime there's poverty there's violence there is that disparity
in terms of affluence so you really get an opportunity to experience what it's
like for a local because you know in Mexico City you know not everyone lives in
Condesa not everyone lives in Polanco so you know that's what I mean by real
okay so I apologize if there's any you know confusion about that word maybe
it's a language issue or you know the cultural thing in terms of the meaning
but I definitely don't mean it in terms of a negative connotation you know
Mexico City is so diverse and that is one of the most positive things about
this city that I love because you can go to somewhere like Polanco and feel very
cool this is very nice and then you might go somewhere like Tepito or you
know a less affluent area and you really feel that you know this is what it's
like for many Mexicans in Mexico City and I think it's important to show that
so that's why I call it real that's what it means and very much in this video was
a real experience for me and authentic experience I felt like a chilango
walking around that market speaking Spanish to people buying ingredients
for considerably cheaper price than it would be in a supermarket so I feel like
you know that's what a little old lady in Mexico City would be doing another
Thursday morning and that's what I'm doing so it's about having that real
authentic experience so I'm conscious this video has gone on for about a
million years but I've enjoyed it I've had a good day today I hope you have as
well don't forget to Like comment and subscribe if you want to see more from
Mexico and if you want to see more cooking with David let me know in the
comments you probably don't so anyway I'll see you in the next video I'll
catch you later
