"there's an opportunity to build back a community that's pretty phenomenal but it's going to
take a lot of effort."
AS THE DIRECTOR OF THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE OF EMERGENCY SERVICES, MARK GHILARDUCCI SEES
THE TASK THAT LIES AHEAD.
"Really, for all intense purposes, Paradise is basically closed until further notice.
That makes it challenging because we're having to find other locations and our effort is
to get people where they go to school, they go to church, they go to work.
In this case, all of that has been destroyed.
Really we're having to build from the ground up."
NOW THAT THE CAMP FIRE IS FULLY CONTAINED, EVERY AVAILABLE RESOURCE IS FOCUSED ON RESPONSE
AND RECOVERY.
AND HOUSING IS AT THE TOP OF THE TO DO LIST.
"As we move through the different areas where
Cal OES is supporting the county and these communities, obviously, response is first.
Taking care of the survivors in a shelter environment.
Hopefully now or soon moving into something a little more stable such as hotels in the
area."
"We're in a really good spot right now.
We already have direct housing approved.
We already have a temporary shelter agreement approved so people can go stay in hotels.
We're in the process now of looking for locations for travel trailers and manufactured homes."
WITH SO MANY HOMES DESTROYED, AND SO FEW RENTALS AVAILABLE, A HOUSING TASK FORCE MADE UP OF
LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL PARTNERS, ARE ALL WORKING...
AND LOOKING...
AT ALL OPTIONS.
"What we're doing – Cal OES in partnership
with FEMA – is leveraging the programs that have been available for this disaster, moving
towards those interim housing solutions.
Whether that is travel trailers, mobile home units, rentals, all the different things that
we can muster with the available stock."
"It's not going to be a Federal decision.
We do it as a team, working with the Federal Government, working with the state, working
with the counties, working with those local officials, working with the tribes as necessary
to make the right decisions the first time. "
