US says Iran is violating UN arms export ban in Yemen and Afghanistan after officials seized weapons

US officials claimed Thursday that Iran is violating the United Nations arms export ban after military equipment was reportedly seized from the country.

Brian Hook, the US special representative for Iran, said the equipment confirms Iran is increasingly supplying weapons to militants across the Middle East and is continuing its missile program unabated.

At a military hangar in Washington, Hook showed reporters a collection of guns, rockets, drones and other gear.

We need to get serious about going after this stuff, Hook told reporters.

Some of the weapons had been intercepted in the Strait of Hormuz en route to Shia fighters in the region while others had been seized by the Saudis in Yemen, the Pentagon said.

The presentation - very similar to a December 2017 event led by the US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley - is part of an ongoing push by President Donald Trumps administration to increase pressure on Tehran and shame Western allies into doing more to tackle Irans regional influence.

The centerpiece of the display was what Hook said is a Sayyad-2 surface-to-air missile system that the Saudis had intercepted in Yemen this year.

Farsi writing along the white rockets side helped prove it was Iranian made, he said.

The conspicuous Farsi markings is Irans way of saying they dont mind being caught violating UN resolutions, Hook told reporters, adding the missile was destined to Huthi rebels who are fighting the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.

Hook said the seized weapons are clear and tangible evidence that Iran is fueling instability in the Middle East.

The Iranians wanted to deliver this to the Huthis, who would have used it to target coalition aircraft up to 46 miles away.

The material shows Iran is determined to send even more weapons into the hands of even more of its proxies, Hook said.

The presentation came a day after US senators voted to advance a measure that could end US military support for the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen.

Lawmakers have grown increasingly frustrated with Saudi Arabia after the murder of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, whose death has been tied to Riyadh.

Hook also displayed anti-tank guided missiles that the US says Iran had provided to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Iran has been providing material support to the Taliban since at least 2007, Hook said.

They were recovered in Kandahar by the Afghan army, he said.

Washington this year pulled out of a pact with Iran aimed at constraining its push for nuclear weapons.

Hook said that since leaving the deal, US officials have found freedom and leverage to tackle Irans regional influence, and he chided other nations for not getting on board.

The current international environment has created unacceptably low expectations for the regime in Tehran, he said.

If the demands of ... the Iranian regime seem too many, it is because Irans malign activities are too numerous.

Hook did not specify when the weaponry had been seized, but the UN Security Council in 2007 expanded an embargo on arms sales to Iran to include arms exports from Iran.

Even under the sanctions relief provided by the nuclear deal the export ban remains in place until 2021 for conventional weapons and until 2024 for missiles.

World leaders fly into Buenos Aires for G20 … Government shutdown looms over border wall funding … Hopes for HIV cure rise

World leaders fly into Buenos Aires for G20 … Government shutdown looms over border wall funding … Hopes for HIV cure rise

Good morning, I'm Patrick Greenfield with today's headlines. If you'd like to receive this briefing by email, sign up here.

The head of the Russia investigation Robert Mueller could turn his attention to the president's eldest son Donald Trump Jr after the special counsel showed he was prepared to prosecute people for lying to Congress. On Thursday, President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen admitted to deceiving congressional investigators about the Trump Organisation's contact with the Kremlin over plans to develop a Trump tower in Moscow during 2016. The president's son has made statements to Congress that have later been contradicted by newspaper reports.

More prosecutions. Democrat Adam Schiff said the House intelligence committee would share transcripts from their Russia inquiry with Mueller's investigation to consider further criminal charges.

The leaders from the world's 20 biggest economies converge on the Argentine capital on Friday looking for consensus on the global flows of trade and investment – at a time when such consensus has been increasingly difficult to come by. As has been the case for the past two years, Trump's volatile demeanour will almost certainly provide the focal point.

Trump's agenda. He has cancelled a planned meeting with Putin. Among others he will talk to German chancellor Angela Merkel and the Chinese president Xi Jinping

Jamal Khashoggi. The murder of the Saudi journalist will hang heavily over the proceedings. Saudi Arabia's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, and the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan are both attending.

The threat of another partial government shutdown in the United States is looming over funding for Trump's long-promised $5bn wall along the US-Mexico border. Funding for key parts of the US government expires on 7 December and Democrats are reportedly hoping to use the shutdown to protect funding for Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

Battle ready. Trump said he is "totally willing" to shut down the government over funding for the wall.

Final showdown. The disagreement over funding for the border wall will be the last bipartisan tussle before the Democrats take control of the House in January.

'You're fired!' the quiz

For White House staffers, Donald Trump's presidency might sometimes feel like a high-stakes season finale of The Apprentice. But have you been keeping up with who's been fired?
