A meeting of twelve journalists from Central America.
I am here because the situation in my country for journalists is very complicated.
A lot of murders, a lot of threats. A lot of risk!
In some states more than others, our colleagues are not only put in jail.
Even worse: They are murdered.
I am here because it is necessary to have safety guidelines for journalists,
because of the risks that these professionals face in my country and the Central American region.
In recent years, the freedom of the press in Guatemala has been attacked and violated.
They share their experiences and techniques, in order to develop
safety guidelines for local media in Central America.
They all have one thing in common.
We are strongly persecuted and criminalized for expressing our ideas as indigenous peoples.
At least 62 journalists have been murdered.
In the current crisis in Nicaragua,
we cannot present ourselves as journalists
because we are the focus of attention
and we're the target.
There is aggression towards us.
Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.
It compares to other countries that are caught in a war, like Syria for example.
Community radio journalists have been persecuted
by the state because there is no law [that protects us].
The safety guidelines are meant to function as a model
that helps editorial teams to better prepare and assess risk.
Even if guidelines won't shield us from the bullets of drug dealers, and corrupt governments,
they could at least help us to take precautions.
That's why it's important to develop safety guidelines that will help us lead a safer life.
