Welcome to Your Bonus Straight Razors Edge Friday Special! Hey Eric here with

Adventures In Wet Shaving and welcome back it's good to see you in this Bonus

Straight Razor Edge Friday Special we're doing a Full Straight Razor Shave and this

is Pass One! Let's get to it we are using my Ace of Spades and this

is the number 49 excellent razor that is at least a full hollow

maybe extra hollow really good so now the first thing you need to do when your

straight razor shaving is you need to stretch okay and not over stretch but

stretch enough all right and when you stretch I reach over like that and then

I put that blade just like that right on my head flap and then I cock it up a

spine with off of my face and then that's gonna give me about the right

angle and what you're looking for is like a 20 to 30 degree angle on that

blade that will be your best shave so let's say 30 degrees or less all right

and I normally judge that by spine width off of my face and I'm blowing out my

cheek there to stretch

and here you can see how far that is off my face all right now get that speed

bump and now I'm going to stretch I'm going to pull that jaw line up and over

to my cheek

and then pull here and see what that does

now I shaved all the way down here just by pulling it up which really works out

quite nicely all right now we're going to go ahead and I'm going to go across

the grain on my chin because that works the best so it'll be across and then

this area here that'll be width with the grain this

will also be with the grain and i'm stretching here just by smiling

did you know Smiling is a exercise let me encourage you smile more people smile

back yes so you will now hear this blade is pretty much resting flat on my face

and that's kind of across there as well now the rest of this is pretty much

gonna be With The Grain and now what I'm doing here is I got my chin up as high

as I can do it I'm pulling down with my my hand on my neck as well

okay that's a little bit of cross right there that's with

all of that is with the grain as well now let me show you what I'm doing here

okay is and it's hard to get it in camera but I'm going to go ahead and be

doing this and clean it off that razor alright then I put that back down

normally I don't even have to lift it up that high but I can't get it on camera

any other way now for the mustache area you just come in pretty much at an angle

and then you rotate it like this like that

alright that's going to be the best way and then I'll show you another trick in

pass too

here I'm going straight down with you Greg

and now I'm bringing up my lip up over an teeth this is a trouble spot for me

all along there I have a scar yeah now we're gonna go ahead and clean

that off and now I have been remiss okay so I'm only getting from like here down

wet when I do this okay that's just the blade getting wet

that is not there's no water getting in this hinge pin here at all or from here

up all of this is dry just from here down I get wet alright so next and we

are going to switch hands alright now I know it seems counterintuitive to a

certain extent to switch hands however once you get used to it you'll be able

to get to more parts of your face easier and better with your own hand alright so

this is my off hand let's do this again we're gonna stretch but not overly

okay that angle 30 degrees or less and now this is very gentle light touch

that's all you need if you have to bear down on this razor it is not sharp

enough all right so don't do it don't use it like a cartridge razor this is

very gentle light touch and that was with the green for me now we're going to

pull this up and over that jawline just like that

there we go nice now see when I'm doing this I'm only getting the blade not from

here up that doesn't get wet at all all right and then I just wipe that off and

directly we're in business again alright so now again I'm it with my left

hand and we're gonna do this alright there you go

pass one complete and you can see that even with a big fifteen sixteenths play

this is really not a problem okay so if you're using something smaller or have

been thinking about it you could always start I wouldn't go any smaller than six

eight but I know a lot of people that start with by base plates as well now

we're gonna go ahead get that rinsed off

alright nice now that looks pretty good right I think so however I can feel it

what we're doing with a straight razor is we are going to do multiple passes

okay and each time we're going to get a better shave I do straight razor edge

Straight Razor Edge Friday Special a Full Straight Razor Shave and this is the

Post Shave Routine alright now we've had a good shave first thing I'm gonna do is

I'm gonna put Alum everywhere yep now this is wonderful because it is

astringent and antiseptic at the same time so it's good for the skin

yeah tightens up those pores does a fine job and there we go now I'm just going

to take this and dry that off

now for the aftershave kind of thing we are going fires and this is the lavender

just marvelous this was one of my favorite scents from them we're going to

put that on as a aftershave again good for the skin yeah wonderful and I put

that everywhere I don't think you can go wrong with that it's just so good for

the skin next because this was a kind of sandalwood meets bay rum thing we are

going to go with her acyl red and this is the sandalwood yeah and that is going

to be nice and this is a aftershave lotion and I basically am using it as a

cologne I am whether it is or not that matter it's all good

yep and we're gonna finish this shave off with men's style

and this is Spice Island so this is a babe round kind of spicy sweet made

round I'm gonna go ahead and get a squirt of that on there and this is a

bomb now I know most people can take bombs if you can't then you know that's

okay you don't have to but you know if you can go for it because it's so good

for the skin you know you can repair that skin with

this kind of a routine with them with chains alone everything just very nice

all right there you go the first thing I do is I will get that

razor and we're gonna make sure that it's nice and dry now if you've got the

whole thing with then you know probably hit this with like a hairdryer or

something that would be brilliant now again I only get mine wet from here down

so the hinge pins never been wet on this one now I'm going to go ahead and flip

that over like that we're gonna put that down for a minute now I make razor watts

so I'm gonna just get a little bit of that on my finger like that that's all I

need close that up and then I'm going to take

that and put it right on that blade like this okay and then I'm going to peach it

off pull off the edge away from me okay you don't want to actually hit that edge

because that would not be a good day for you all right so now I'm go ahead and

got the blade now we're gonna get the tank get this tail okay we've got the

end we got in here and now we're gonna leave that open overnight

and let it dry okay so right now we're just going to put it down there yeah I'm

going to cover that because the next thing we're going to do is we're going

to go ahead and clean this brush so what I do is I swirl that around on the

bottom of the bowl here like that and then we can empty that and as it empties

I will go ahead and swallow that first around the edge and that's going to

clean out that sink now I'm going to get after that I'm going to get most of that

water out of there all right and then I take a towel okay and I'm

going to get the excess water out of this brush just by rubbing it on your

towel now I'm not smashing it into the towel okay I'm just rubbing the tips one

the towel that's all I'm doing and then we are going to be in good

shape and I just keep moving it around until I get that in pretty good shape

now I'm going to take this towel and dry off the handle as well just like that

and we're good to go now what I'm going to do is I'm going

southern on the handle and let it dry like that overnight mm-hmm and by the

morning this will be dry ready to go again so we'll put that aside now as far

as the suit goes okay you could wash that out if you want what I normally

would do is I will actually take it and just wash the outside that's all I do

with this okay I washed the outside of the tub and I'm just gonna leave the

inside there to dry overnight again and in the morning I will go ahead and put

the lid on there I do straight razor edge Friday specials on the first and

Straight Razor Edge Friday Special Pass Two! Let's get to it

so we've got my lather we're gonna get lathered up

yes we are get your lather on oh yeah

there we go now it's nice and pasty which is just the way I like it because

we can always add water or later all right

and matter of fact let's do so I'm good just dip those tips in the water like

that okay and we're gonna kick this up yeah we are

oh yeah we're getting there when you dip those tips again get that

soap hydrated oh yeah there we go put the peeps on this you're not great

I'm telling you good soap all right yeah

there we go look at that yeah I don't know

that's a brush hair I that's one of mine but it's all right it's all good

no big deal now we're gonna put just a little bit more water on that yeah I

think we're there

all right so now this is pass two and there are two schools of thought on pass

two okay you could either go across the grain or

you go against the grain on this pass now I'm going to actually end up doing

both okay because my cheeks like this that's going to be against the grain now

in here that's going to be across the grain right through here that is against

the grain again and then I'll go across the grain up in this area and right

through there it's still going to be with the grain for me it just works

better now instead of holding the razor two fingers in front and two and back

like I did on past one I'm going to hold the razor more like this okay it just

works better for me and I have more control so let's get going on this now

again this blade is going to be almost flat on my face one this pass because

that works the best especially against the grain for me all right

but stretching is key don't over stretch but you got a stretch so I let my jaw as

high as I can and I'm gonna hold down with my fingers and I'm gonna block my

cheek

okay here's a key now I just went across like that and it looks like I was doing

this I wasn't okay I was actually lifting that off my face each time so we

never shave we never shave like this it's bad that's

how you get cut you always shave like this okay you want to be perpendicular

to that blade not parallel alright so I just noticed what I was doing this it

looked like I was going sideways I'm not alright so keep that in mind again

this is against the grain for me

and I'm doing all this off the camera I should be showing you so there you go

and again you know if you're watching I'm not getting it from here up wet so

that hinge pin is dry all the time okay that's so important the life of your

razors in the hinge pin if you can keep that dry you're in business and it'll be

good for a long time

and again this is pretty much got that that spine right on my skin going up

okay and now I'm going to switch up that handle a little bit like that and I'm

going to stretch on this side and I'm going to blow out my cheek and send my

mouth that way also as you see little strokes you don't have to do everything

in one pass or you know one big stroke little strokes little strokes are better

now this like that was totally against the grain now this is across the grain

here now again watch I'm just gonna knock off that soap like that and then

clean that blade nothing else gets wet now we're gonna switch hands and get

this other side

and here I smile and then that stretches this part now this is going to pretty

much be across the grain for me and that's the best way I've found to do

that area on my face and now up here this is going to be across the grain and

all I do is open my mouth to stretch all right now the rest of this down here is

with the gray

so now if you can't go across the grain or against the grain you could always

always just go with the grain and every time you do it you're still going to get

a better shave alright

there we go past to complete let's go ahead and see how we did with that get

that rinsed off oh nice that is really nice cheeks are brilliant

OK SO IF YOU HAVE A TIMING BELT THAT SNAPS ON A CAR JUST BREAKS DUE TO LACK OF MAINTENANCE

OR THE WATER PUMP SEIZES LIKE I SAW A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO AND YOU WANT TO CHECK TO MAKE

SURE YOUR VALVES ARE GOOD WITHOUT PULLING THE HEAD OFF I HAVE A HEAD HERE FROM A HONDA

F22 ENGINES BUT THIS WILL WORK FOR ANY INTERFERENCE ENGINE BE THAT HONDA ACURA TOYOTA LEXUS ANY

OF THE OTHER BRANDS THAT HAVE AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE SO YOU WANT TO SEE IF ONE OF YOUR VALVES

IS BENT RIGHT WITHOUT PULLING THE HEAD OFF BUT ONE THING YOU CAN DO WE HAVE THE EXHAUST

SIDE HERE ON THE OTHER SIDE WE HAVE THE INTAKE SIDE TO KIND OF DO A QUICK CHECK TO SEE IF

YOUR VALVES MIGHT BE BENT GO AHEAD LOOSEN UP ALL THE THE VALVE LASHES LASH ALL THE VALVES

ON THE SPRINGS JUST A 10MM BOLT AND THEN YOU ARE ABLE TO BE ABLE TO MOVE THE VALVE UP AND

DOWN SO YOU LOOSEN UP ALL THOSE RIGHT AND THEN I GET TO ONE THAT I'VE LOOSENED UP AND

IT'S NOT MOVING THIS ONE IS NOT MOVING THIS ONE IS NOT MOVING WE'LL GO ON THE OTHER SIDE

ON THE INTAKE SIDE GOT MOVEMENT THERE MOVEMENT THERE CAN YOU GUYS SEE THAT MOVEMENT THERE

MOVEMENT THERE THERE AND THERE I DON'T HAVE MOVEMENT ON THIS SIDE OR THIS ONE SO WHILE

THE HEAD IS STILL IN THE VEHICLE GO AHEAD AND LOOSEN UP ALL YOUR VALVES OR LOOSEN UP

ALL THE VALVE LASH SO ALL THESE MOVED EXCEPT FOR THESE 2 RIGHT HERE SO LET'S GO AHEAD FLIP

THE HONDA HEAD OVER SO IT WAS THERE 2 THAT WE'RE NOT LETTING US

MOVE AT ALL SO IT WAS THESE 2 THAT WERE NOT MOVING AT

ALL AND AS YOU CAN SEE RIGHT THERE THIS SHOULD BE CLOSED THIS VALVE SHOULD BE CLOSED CAUSE

I TOOK OFF ALL THE LASH ON THE VALVE ON THE TOP SIDE AND THIS VALVE SHOULD BE CLOSED AS

WELL BUT YOU CAN SEE THAT IT'S NOT IT IS BENT ALL THE OTHER ONES ARE CLOSED

THIS ONE ISN'T AND THIS ONE ISN'T SO THESE VALVES ARE BENT SO THAT IS A QUICK AND EASY

WAY TO FIND OUT IF ANY OF YOUR VALVES ARE BENT IF YOU HAVE A TIMING BELT BREAK OR YOU

SUSPECT THAT YOU HAVE BENT A VALVE BE THAT THE TIMING BELT BREAKS OR SOMETHING ELSE CATASTROPHIC

ELSE HAPPENS SO I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU GUYS KNOW HOW TO LOOK FOR A BENT VALVE IF YOU HAVE

A TIMING BELT SNAP ON YOU SOMETIMES YOU GET LUCKY AND SOMETIMES YOU ARE ABLE TO HAVE A

HEAD THAT DOESN'T HAVE A BENT VALVE AND YOU DON'T NEED TO PULL THE HEAD OFF AND DO I'M

GOING TO HAVE THIS SEND OUT HAVE THE VALVES CHECKED HAVE IT RESURFACED SO WHILE I WAS

EDITING THIS VIDEO I THOUGHT ABOUT ONE THING EVEN IF YOU TAKE ALL THE VALVE LASH OFF THE

SPRING AND RELEASE ALL THE TENSION ON THE SPRING ALLOWING YOU TO MOVE THE IT UP AND

DOWN EVEN THOUGH IT MIGHT MOVE UP AND DOWN THERE IS A CHANCE THAT THE VALVE CAN BE BENT

STILL AND WHEN I SAY BENT I'M TALKING MICROSCOPIC YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE IT WITH THE NAKED EYE WHAT

YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT IT ON A SPECIAL MACHINE THAT THEY USE TO RESURFACE VALVES WHEN THEY

ARE DOING HEAD WORK AND WHEN YOU START SPINNING THE VALVE FAST ENOUGH YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE

A WOBBLE AT THE END IT'S VERY SLIGHT AND MINUTE BUT AT A HIGH SPEED TURN WHEN THERE TURNING

THE VALVE TO RESURFACE IT THAT'S WHEN YOU CAN SEE IT SO EVEN THOUGH YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE

A SITUATION AS BAD AS I DID HERE WHERE THE VALVE WON'T EVEN LET GO ANYMORE IT'S STILL

TIGHT AND THEN WHEN I FLIP THE HEAD OVER YOU CAN ACTAULLY SEE THAT THE VALVE IS ACTUALLY

BENT BECAUSE IT'S STAYING OPEN AND NOT SEATING CORRECTLY ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE HEAD ON

THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE HEAD YOU CAN STILL HAVE A BENT VALVE EVEN THOUGH YOU MIGHT NOT

BE ABLE TO SEE IT SO I COULD HAVE VALVES THAT ARE BENT BECAUSE THE PISTONS HIT THE VALVES

AND EVEN THOUGH IN THE VIDEO IT LOOKS LIKE ALL OF THEM ARE CLOSED AND SEALING CORRECTLY

THAT MIGHT NOT BE THE CASE SO WHAT HAPPENS ON A VALVE AS THE ENGINE IS TURNING AS THE

RPMS AND THE ENGINE IS MOVING AND TURNING THAT VALVE ACTUALLY SPINS 360 DEGREES INSIDE

THAT INSIDE THAT SEAT EVERY TIME IT OPENS AND CLOSES IT ACTUALLY MOVES A LITTLE BIT

THAT VALVE DONE NOT STAY STATIONARY IT ACTUALLY ROTATES SO AS THAT VALVE STARTS ROTATING AND

IT GETS TO THE SPOT WHERE IT'S BENT A LITTLE BIT YOU MIGHT EXPERIENCE A MISFIRE SO I JUST

WANTED TO DISCLOSE THAT TO YOU GUYS JUST IN CASE YOU DO THIS WORK HERE AND YOU DON'T SEE

ANY OBVIOUS SIGNS OF A BENT VALVE YOU STILL MIGHT HAVE A BENT VALVE SO IF YOU PLAN ON

KEEPING THE VEHICLE IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE THE HEAD CHECKED OR IF YOUR JUST IF YOUR TRYING

TO GET THE TIMING BELT BACK ON TO GET THE CAR RUNNING AND YOUR GOING TO SELL IT THEN

YOU MIGHT EVEN WANT TO MESS WITH IT LEAVE IT FOR THE NEXT GUY TO DEAL WITH BUT I JUST

WANTED TO DISCLOSE THAT FACT ALRIGHT LOOKING AT

ANYWHERE BETWEEN $150 TO $250 BUCKS TO GET IT DONE AND THEN YOU HAVE TO DO THE HEAD GASKET

AND ALL THAT OTHER GOOD STUFF SO IF YOU GUYS WANT A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO SEE IF A VALVE

IS BENT GO AHEAD LOOSEN UP ALL THE VALVE LASH TAKE ALL THE PRESSURE OFF THE VALVE AND SEE

IF SEE IF IT WILL MOVE AT ALL AND IF IT DOESN'T MOST LIKELY 99.9% THAT YOU HAVE A BENT VALVE
