Waching daily Nov 29 2018

People and their societies change with the times.

And at the center of each change...

...lies conflict.

Rough-Looking Sinner: They're closing in!

Rough-Looking Sinner: Agh!

Hidemi: No! You Bastards!

Hidemi: Ngh!

Hidemi: Heheh. Too easy.

Hidemi: Damn...

Saber: Hidemi!

*Gunshots*

Sinner: Uwahh!

Sinner 2: Gah!

Sinner 2: Where did she go?!

Saber: Checkmate.

Saber: Come on, we still have a ways to go.

Saber: That citizen isn't going to save itself. *smirk*

Hidemi: Saber...

Saber: Come on!

Hidemi: Right.

Hidemi: Damned machine!

Saber: Be careful! One wrong move is all it takes.

Hidemi: Yeah, I know.

Hidemi: This isn't my first operation.

Hidemi: Not this time!

Saber: I've got your back! Try to flank it while I distract it.

Hidemi: Right...

Hidemi: Hrahh!

Saber: Let's bring this thing down!

Hidemi: Yes Ma'am.

Saber: Nicely done!

*Thud*

Citizen: Ow!

Citizen: Finally you guys are here! I hate being in that thing.

Saber: Let's go. We still need to bring her back to the RRU before we can head back.

Hidemi: You're welcome.

Citizen: Hmph!

Saber: How are you holding up?

Hidemi: I'll live.

Saber: Good, then let's keep going.

Hidemi: Agh!

Citzen: Ah! Hey, be more careful with me!

Saber: You're hurt.

Hidemi: I'm fine.

Saber held out a first aid kit to Hidemi.

Saber: Use it.

Hidemi: ...

Hidemi: Hey.

Saber: What is it?

Hidemi: We lost good men today.

Saber: They fought their hardest. That is something to be celebrated, not mourned.

Hidemi: You're right. Still, it feels wrong to just leave them here.

Hidemi: I mean...that could've been us, you know?

Citizen: Ugh, you guys are pathetic.

Saber: Hmm?

Citizen: You sinners can barely keep us citizens safe as it is. They were dead weight.

Citizen: Any Sinner that isn't able to do the one thing they're actually good for *deserves* to die.

Citizen: Waste of resources they are. Better them than me!

Hidemi: What?! Those people *died* for you!

Hidemi: What makes you brainiacs think that you're so much better than us Sinners?

Citizen: We can actually *do* our job.

Saber: Hey, that is *not* fair! We do our best.

Saber: Our job is not only difficult, but extremely dangerous as well.

Hidemi: We die doing our job! And-

Citizen: Yeah, just like you almost did to those men.

Hidemi: Gah! You...

Citizen: Hmph! It's only a matter of time before you get what's coming for you.

Citizen: Maybe then you can actually be "free".

Hidemi squeezed the hilt of his dagger.

Saber: Hidemi, stop. It isn't worth it. *She* isn't worth it.

Hidemi: She's right, you know. I'm bound to die sooner or later.

Hidemi: I've failed the Code 3 exam several times now...

Hidemi: But before I go out, I'll show her just how little this girl really is!

Citizen: Huh?! Y-you can't hurt me. I'm a citizen!

Citizen: I'll add more years onto your sentence! I'll-

Hidemi: Maybe it's *you* who doesn't understand!

Hidemi: I don't care about my sentence. Not at this point...

Saber: The OPS will detain you for the rest of your life or worse!

Hidemi's Accessory: Intent to harm a citizen is a violation of the People's Charter.

Hidemi's Accessory: Your sentence has been extended by 100,000 years.

Hidemi's accessory fell with a thud.

Citizen: Eek!

Hidemi: *Laugh* Like I was ever going to be free in the first place.

Saber: Hidemi! I'm warning you...

Saber: If you try to kill her, I'll have no choice but to stop you!

Hidemi: The sentence system was designed to keep us chained down to our duty. I see that now...

Hidemi: We were never meant to reduce our sentence enough to earn our freedom. The citizen is right.

Hidemi: This is how we can finally be free.

Citizen: (I...I can't move! I'm so...scared...)

Saber: Damnit, Hidemi! Stop this!

Hidemi: Nghhh! Stay out of this!

Saber: Aghh!

Hidemi: You're next.

Citizen: (No way...He's really going to kill me!)

Citizen: (I'm actually going to...die?)

Citizen: (His accessory!)

Citizen: (If I can just...move...)

Hidemi: Watch closely.

Hidemi: This...is my freedom!

Saber: No!

Hidemi: Tch!

Citizen: *scream*

A gunshot echoed throughout the abandoned city.

What Is the Ideal Size for a City Block? - Cheddar Explains - Duration: 4:00.

Am I the only one who kind of always assumed city block meant a standard size?

Well, it might seem obvious now,

but city blocks come in a lot of different sizes,

which makes you wonder what the ideal size is for a city block.

Let's go for a walk,

say, here in Manhattan.

If I want to meet my co-worker for a coffee,

and he's 10 blocks uptown,

that's 2,500 feet, half a mile.

In that case, I'll say, "Yeah. No sweat.

The walk feels like a breeze."

But if I'm in Atlanta at the Perimeter Center Mall,

and my friend is the same distance away,

I'd be more tempted to drive or I'd walk, but grudgingly.

This is the comparison that prominent architect and urbanist,

David Green uses to illustrate walkability.

Generally, we say something is walkable when it offers

destinations to walk to and when pedestrians feel safe and comfortable walking there.

So, when you're walking across that super block,

its massive scale means you don't get the sense you're making progress through space.

As a puny little human on

a vast asphalt plain where the buildings are hulking and set far away from the roads,

you don't feel safe and comfortable.

But when you walk that same half mile in New York City,

you're crossing all these perpendicular streets.

You sense that you're making progress.

Your senses are engaged by the rich tapestry of city life unfolding all around you,

and you've got so many different ways to traverse this grid.

Zigging and zagging, you could take a new route and discover something new each time.

Portland, Oregon has small blocks and is the darling of the urban planning world.

Urbanists love Portland because those small blocks make a city more walkable.

Planners and urbanists care so much about walkability because

walkability is part of what makes an urban space feel like a place,

someplace where you want to visit and spend money.

That said, smaller isn't always better,

because the smaller the blocks,

the more time you spend crossing streets

and the more time cars and trucks spend at stop signs,

and there's an economic trade-off for cities.

As block size shrinks,

you end up with more streets.

Streets cost money to maintain,

as opposed to a retail occupied plot of land which generates tax revenue.

According to some very impressive complicated math by this team at Harvard,

when it comes to block size,

smaller isn't automatically better.

By their math, New York City's grid,

laid out in 1811,

is nearly ideal in terms of walkability and accessibility to the most destinations.

Its blocks have been able to accommodate everything from farmhouses to skyscrapers,

and there are countless destinations easily accessible within a five-minute walk.

So, by that measure,

it's one of the most walkable cities in the world.

David Green, our urbanist friend,

says his ideal block size,

based on his years of experience,

is 240 feet by 360 feet.

That's right in between Portland's 200 by

200 blocks and Manhattan's bigger oblong blocks.

He says this is accommodating to most types of buildings including parking,

which needs a lot of space.

But it's still small enough to feel walkable to pedestrians.

But, as the Harvard team notes,

there's not one Goldilocks block size for every city.

Part of the ideal size depends on how big

the parcel sizes are plus the street width and the depth of the plots.

But, their formula can help planners find

that sweet spot between walkability and efficiency.

Game Plan for Buiness Succes - Part 1 - Before You Lay Foundation - Duration: 8:21.

Hello. This is a game plan for you to have business success. If we have not met

before I'm John Ruman international business coaching consultant

thank you for the opportunity this is me taking a post I have done in a local

group in Trinidad and delving deep into it I had a lot of questions and feedback

privately in the group outside of the group and I want to allow a series of

videos to basically answer those questions so this is kind of going in

the first five or six parts of that and I'll be doing these within the

facilitating greatness group in depth for you to check out so the first let me

tell you the the crux of the person the person had a question they had been in

business for a while they'd be having challenges and they're asking kind of

fundamental questions about how they should be running the business if they

should proceed and they were basically financially failing phrase from what I

could gather with at least how it was going now and they just weren't sure how

to get how to get out of the mess they're in so I kind of have this strong

flow that came through me and I just basically kept on writing and

giving a lot of feedback and people loved it and that's what we'll be

talking about in this series so it is basically me going in-depth with what I

had actually said in this post so quite simply this first part that I think is

critical for anyone who wants to start a business is that they often think I'm

just an a and they hear all about people saying jump ship just go take a leap of

faith go do it here's the big challenge of

that I'll be totally honest with you statistically most businesses fail in

the first three to five years I think three years 80% five years 90% something

crazy it's a very small statistic of businesses that actually succeed one of

the reasons businesses do so well is it can take a while to

build momentum there's something called the pivot which is when something

doesn't work out right it doesn't mean you get rid of the business it means you

take a few shifts and tweaks and such to make the business work for example you

probably have heard of YouTube YouTube is not or was not excuse me a video

sharing service it was a dating service

Facebook was a social sharing within universities only he had to be a student

it was very you know very hard to get in and obviously they've changed the models

they pivoted to what the market wanted so that they could maximize the benefit

for what they're trying to do not only financially but also with whatever

vision they have for the organization so that being said when someone tries to

start a company it's often that financially it doesn't do so well for

the first 18 months to 3 years there needs to be super super super lean

finances they may have to sell their car they they start and honestly most are so

broke after three years when the business fails that they're just like

why would I ever do this again here's how you get around that if you have the

ability to have let's say you have two people the husband wife two partners it

doesn't really matter and they support each other

financially this allows for the business to start to have the basic bills covered

whether it be rent whether it be the mortgage whether it be the car all the

insurance food clothing I'm not talking about expensive trips I'm not talking

about elaborate elaborate expenditures of any type what I am talking about is

prudent buying decisions in the first few years

so basics are covered by one person the other person while this is going on

and works in the business figures out what's works and what doesn't doesn't

have the risk of having their home their car their clothing and their food the

basics taken from them because they couldn't succeed and it allows them to

figure out what works and what doesn't likewise if the person is an individual

and they don't have a support partner whether it be a spouse or partner you

know of any sort they are in a different situation they need to work the normal

job to pay for these bills and then in the evenings and weekends

spend time doing this with that being said so regardless of the situation the

job is happening either on a part-time basis or full-time by someone who's

supported by another and again ideally the finances are kept to a minimum so

they could focus on building the business during that time what this

allows you to do is your brain is not like oh my god I'm gonna die what if

this doesn't happen things are not gonna work out it really allows you to figure

things out also it allows for you to take the money

that you generate and reinvest it in the business so let's assume you're making a

certain amount of money you're having some level success let's say you need

certain equipment you can upgrade or improve the quality of equipment you can

use it in online advertising whether it be social media browser search engine

kind of thing it could be taking courses I'd strongly encourage you to learn what

the experts know and do so you are able to better facilitate this all that you

can do while you are working or while your partner is working and what this

allows is for things to build and create momentum once momentum is built and

there's enough continual momentum you now can hire someone part-time to help

you out the great thing about doing that now let's assuming your solo and you

don't have the support system while you do your regular day job someone is

helping grow your business for you start with

half a day a week they can be a virtual assistant grow from there to eventually

to half days or one full day however you want to plan it out and slowly and

steadily expand so you can now over time have it growing and growing business the

awesome thing is as you do this more and more frequently the business will

compound on itself you'll make more sales as you reinvest existing sales for

more social media advertising you'll be able to get more things done that need

to be done by having this virtual assistant working for you while you have

your day job a couple key factors is when you do this regardless of the

situation you're in I would encourage you get enough sleep studies have shown

that ninety minutes less of the amount of sleep your body needs actually means

four hours less productivity what happens is people think I need to live

and work like a hundred hours insane amount of hours a week to have this done

and the problem is they can't have a clear head so I hope this has been

helpful I'd love to hear any questions you have on this and trying to keep

these videos fairly short please let me know what questions you have I'm happy

to help you in any way that I can and I will share this the clips of the videos

so people on various other places could get information so they could check out

the full thing on the group so all the best let me know what questions you have

if this is your situation how are you doing it what's worked well for you I'd

love to hear your feedback thank you so much

No more low self-esteem: "Thrive has completely changed it for me..." - Duration: 2:20.

Hi my name's Ben Collins and I went through Thrive because of my low self-esteem

I am a goalkeeper so I do get a lot of

hate, I suggest from players like

saying it's my fault when a goal

goes in and it like dragged me down and

pulled my performance and then like I had

people at school dragging it even further down and

it was really effecting my mental health, and they just basically

pulled me down and I was just feeling a

bit suicidal to be honest and I think

Thrive has just completely changed it for me because it's made me feel

more positive about myself, and i'm trying to make other people

feel positive now, and it's a really good

course and I do suggest it a lot, and the

people that do it, that teach you through it

they're very nice they're very supportive and if you need anything you can basically

just text them to say like hey I'm

feeling negative what should I do with

myself and they like explain it to you

and it really helps because a lot of

times when i'm at work and I'm like

feeling negative about myself I just

text my Thrive consultant to help me and

she like explains it's like saying

you're winding yourself up you're doing

this to yourself

and like trying to get me thinking positive about it.

In year 4 I was diagnosed with a learning difficulty and that

really knocked my self-esteem down very low

and through like a lot of therapy classes I could say,

I was trying to

make myself feel better and I was like

they were trying to make me feel better

and it was working, but it wasn't working

for a long time I mean I'm not

criticizing the place I went to because

it were lovely and fantastic but it's just

since I've done Thrive I'm feeling like I don't have to go again, to there,

to see him again, and probably that's a good thing

Southwest Airlines agent mocked five-year-old epileptic girl called Abcde for her unique name - Duration: 3:50.

Southwest Airlines agent mocked five-year-old epileptic girl called Abcde for her unique name

A Southwest Airlines agent has been shamed for laughing at a five-year-old epileptic girl who is called Abcde (pronounced ab-cit) as she boarded a flight earlier this month. Traci Redford, the girl's mother, spoke out about their experience on Wednesday.

She told how the unidentified Southwest agent ridiculed her daughter as they boarded a flight at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, on November 4 after she handed over their boarding pass.

They were flying home to El Paso, Texas, at the time. Not only did she laugh loudly at the gate, but the agent also uploaded a photograph of the boarding pass onto Facebook to share with friends.

Traci said Abcde was upset and confused by the incident. 'She said "Mom, why is she laughing at my name? And I said not everyone is nice and not everyone is going to be nice and it's unfortunate,"' she told ABC 7.

Redford said she was horrified enough when the agent laughed in their faces at the gate. 'The gate agent started laughing, pointing at me and my daughter, talking to other employees.

So I turned around and said, "Hey if I can hear you, my daughter can hear you, so I'd appreciate if you'd just stop,"' she said. When she was later told about the post on Facebook, her disgust worsened.

'While I was sitting there, she took a picture of my boarding pass and chose to post it on social media, mocking my daughter.

'It was actually brought to my attention by somebody who had seen it on Facebook and reported it to Southwest Airlines. 'And after two weeks of doing a formal complaint, Southwest hadn't done anything,' she claimed.

Southwest Airlines issued her an apology but refused to reveal whether or not the agent has been fired or faced any other kind of disciplinary action.

'We extend our sincere apology to the family. We take great pride in extending our Southwest Hospitality to all of our Customers, which includes living by the Golden Rule and treating every individual with respect, in person or online.

'The post is not indicative of the care, respect, and civility we expect from all of our Employees.

'We have followed up with the Employee involved, and while we do not disclose personnel actions publicly, we are using this as an opportunity to reinforce our policies and emphasize our expectations for all Employees,' the company said in a statement.

Bystander Intervention for Sexual Harassment - Duration: 9:06.

Hello, and thank you for joining me. Today, we are going to discuss bystander

intervention strategies, ways all of us can intervene when we witness sexual

misconduct in workplace contexts.

Your decision to spend a few minutes today on this topic

is an important step forward in preventing sexual harassment and assault.

Have you ever felt powerless in the face of a situation that you knew

was harmful to your colleague?

Many of us have been there and it's never easy to

act, but my hope is that when you finish watching this video you'll be equipped

with some strategies that you can deploy to intervene in future situations.

I'm Sharon Potter, professor of sociology at the University of New Hampshire and

co-founder and the director of the Prevention Innovations Research Center.

My area of research expertise is sexual violence intervention strategies.

So let's start with developing a common understanding of what we are talking about.

What is sexual misconduct? Sexual misconduct is unwanted behaviors that

range from an inappropriate joke to a violent physical attack.

Sexual misconduct often involves power dynamics with the person who is being targeted at

the risk of losing professional opportunities should he or she challenge

the perpetrator's behaviors.

Sexual harassment and assault in workplace contexts

are not new problems but we are experiencing a broadening public

awareness of these issues as a result of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.

This growing awareness gives us a collective opportunity to work towards reducing the problem.

Before we can intervene in an evolving situation, we need to know how to

identify situations that may warrant intervention.

There are some situations that are unambiguous.

So if you witness someone in physical danger, you should

seek assistance from formal authorities immediately.

Today we are talking about

situations that are not as obvious. If you see a situation that feels

uncomfortable to you as a witness, you should trust your instincts and directly

or subtly assess the situation. And one of the best ways to prepare to intervene

is to spend some time thinking about how you would respond to different types of situations.

At the end of a conference presentation session, you see a prominent

professor approach one of the graduate student presenters.

He rubs her arm and suggests a meeting in his hotel room to discuss her research.

While you understand the graduate student may be flattered

by the attention and you do not want to

thwart a potential opportunity for a legitimate professional development conversation,

the professor's approach makes you uncomfortable.

So what can you do?

As a bystander you could address the target directly

and offer an alternate safer context for the conversation.

You could say something like: "I want to hear more about the research as well. Can the three

of us have a cup of coffee in the lobby?"

If your sense is that the student would

like help removing herself from the situation entirely,

you could also offer her such an out.

For example, you could remind the student

that she is late to meet someone across the street. Both of these approaches

offer a rescue to the student and, hopefully, send a subtle message to the

professor that you do not think his behavior is appropriate.

Should your interpretation of the situation be incorrect, the student has the autonomy

to say no to your suggested alternatives.

You might also choose to address the

professor directly by saying something like: "I'm so glad to hear that you are

interested in the student's excellent work.

I think it would be more appropriate for you

to have a conversation in a more public setting."

You could also disrupt the situation by

doing something like flickering the lights in the room and announcing that

everyone needs to leave as the folks are setting up for the next session.

You could take that opportunity to pull the student aside and ask if she would like assistance.

You can let her know that you found the professor's behavior

inappropriate and that you are really sorry this has happened to her.

You can also let her know ways to report this behavior.

ASA has an anti-harassment policy

for the Annual Meeting and the harassment is a violation of ASA's code

of Ethics. As such, this behavior can be reported.

Finally, if you are concerned about a situation

but do not feel comfortable intervening yourself, you can

seek the help of others.

In this situation, you could see if there

is an association staff member in the room or ask a member of the hotel staff

for assistance.

You could also enlist the help of a colleague in the audience.

If you are unable to find immediate assistance,

you could subsequently report the behavior to the association's executive director.

While that may not address the immediate situation, it could help to

prevent future situations from developing in a similar manner.

Intervening as a bystander in ongoing and single cases of workplace harassment

poses similar and different challenges. In workplace settings, people feel their

careers can be at risk if they intervene.

Particularly, if they call out a senior

colleague or a popular peer.

The choice to intervene is often shaped by a

person's own status. People with less status because of gender, rank, race, and

other characteristics may experience barriers to intervening. That is why it

is especially important for senior colleagues in secure positions to lead

by example and intervene in a visible manner that signals to others that this

type of behavior is not acceptable.

In many of these situations, the target

blames him or herself. So, when a bystander says to the target this is not

appropriate behavior or this is not your fault,

the statement reinforces to the target that the behavior is not appropriate,

it bolsters their confidence for seeking help, and has other positive implications

for how the target moves forward and is confident in their identity as a professional .

It is always up to you to decide whether

to respond to a situation and that is not always an easy decision.

We made this video so that if a situation arises for which you do feel comfortable

intervening, you will have a sense of what can be done.

As I said earlier, the key to intervening is

thinking through strategies in advance. Sexual harassment and assault in workplace contexts

can ruin people's careers and their lives.

It is important for us to come together collectively to ensure that our

colleagues are safe.

Being a bystander can be uncomfortable and involves some risks

but we need to empower ourselves to act to build a safe community.

Kansas City Health Department Pours Bleach On Food Meant For The Homeless | Happy Thanksgiving - Duration: 4:53.

moving on to some also really horrific and sad news and we all know

Thanksgiving when it comes to Thanksgiving you everyone wants to give

and I love this about Thanksgiving when you go on YouTube and when you watch all

these viral videos that go around this time of the year you will see people

going out and handing people some food going out and giving the homeless

feeding the homeless people giving turkeys to some people on the street and

people that need it going out and you see this everywhere all the time 24/7

and it's the greatest thing in the world and that's why I love the place America

in this country that we live in I love it because there's um the vast majority

of human beings in this country are good and they have good intentions and they

want to help their neighbors they want to help their brothers and sisters and

this is a story of a group that really wanted to do that but the city the state

the government came in stepped in and said no you're not allowed two reasons

being I don't know you guys can help me figure this out all right so in Kansas

City a Health Department poured bleach poured bleach and tipped over the food

meant for the homeless and because of permit issues and it just hurts me it

hurts me to talk about this in the situation so a group the group that was

trying to do this kind hearted charity um the free hot soup Casey had intended

to distribute food such as home-cooked chili oil drop sandwiches and soup to

the homeless on November 5th why did all of this food get bleach poured over and

thrown on the floor and thrown away you want to know why this is why cuz

official said that the official said that the volunteer group did not have a

permit and that the food was not prepared in approved kitchens

therefore deeming it a public safety risk continuing on by saying and this

was the the director um he continued by saying e coli or Salmonella or Listeria

can grow in the food and then you give it get give that food to homeless people

who are more vulnerable they will end up in the ER and even die from that

exposure and yes no one here no one in the mind no one in the world is saying

that these things can't happen but let's use common sense please and thank you

let's use common sense in this situation I don't understand it are you really

thinking that these neighborhoods that these people

this is not the first time that this group hands out food to the homeless not

the first time they've have a history of doing this I don't know why that the

city decided that this time today in November 5th they were gonna throw this

food away really good food that was freshly cooked anyways the KC soup group

that's I'm sorry for I'm saying that name wrong what is it yeah the free hot

soup KC group have done this in the past no one has gotten salmonella listeria

all of that craziness no one has died from their food poisoning and then on

top of that there were other groups that were giving giving out food the same

exact type of way why is the city of Kansas doing this why did they decide to

throw away all this good fresh food only God knows only God knows I just don't

get it it's Thanksgiving it's a time we are

supposed to be thankful and helping and just thankful for what we have and

sharing it with the world that is around us why are you making it harder for

people to be kind human beings why is the city making it harder I don't know I

don't know I don't know please help me understand the situation

shame on you Kansas City but let me end it on a good note because the group

Key Practices for Youth Focused CCS - Duration: 5:41.

The Center for comedian citizen science started in 2016

mostly because the field of citizen science has been exploding. The

problem is is that people are making a lot of claims about benefits for

communities, the benefits for people participating, the benefits for science,

but there's very little research on that. What we do is conduct research on best

practices for developing and doing citizen science projects. We did 13 case

studies where we spent time with young people and educators in the field and

interviewed young people before and after their participation as well as

educators and citizen science program leaders to really understand what kind

of learning is going on here in a very deep and systematic way. As we

investigate learning and community and citizen science we've been really

fortunate to be able to work with and gain insight from educators as well as

natural scientists working with youth in different ways across a range of

contexts.

Out of those case studies we saw these three practices kind of as common across

the number of youth. The three key practices of youth community and citizen

science are sharing findings with outside audiences, youth taking ownership

of data quality, and interacting with complex social ecological systems. We saw

young people sharing with all different kinds of audiences and this really gave

them the opportunity to step into leadership roles. So we often have kids

write about their experiences through blogs and so we have a blog at the

Museum and so we have school kids. Their whole classes sometimes write the blog

together. And by the end of the summer they serve as experts for hopefully a

new cohort of students or students who they're handing off the project to. Again

it really validates that this was meaningful work. And this was really

important again for young people to see themselves as becoming experts in these

data collection methods. Kids can do really rigorous work. One of the tools

that we've used in the Vital Signs program is actually incorporating and a

peer quality check and a peer quality review when you put a young person in

charge of their peers and you explain them the importance of what they're

doing and the importance of integrity of the process and protocol and data you

see that they can get really invested and they kind of self monitor themselves

as well as their peers.

This was a practice that was important for young people to move beyond solely

learning about science or the natural world itself but to really think about

how humans interact in these complex systems. Seeing them notice the stuff

that's going on in their local community and how it might affect the science that

we were talking about I thought that that was something that they might have

not otherwise had access to. The human participation in an ecosystem is

sometimes the hook that gets a kid who doesn't think that they're interested in

the environment interested.

The key teacher practices are practices that educators both in and out of school

can use to maximize the opportunities for youth learning in citizen and

community science activities. There are three of them the first one is

positioning students as people who do science, framing the work globally and

locally, attending to the unexpected.

They're not just people who are collecting data to give to scientists

but they are involved in the meaning making, in the reasoning practices

themselves, and can really take on roles. I think they get a greater sense of

ownership and also take greater responsibility in what they're doing.

When you look at some of the high school programs especially that's where you

really get that impacted oh I could do that job. I could I could do that because

I've already had this experience.

This is a practice that's important because community and citizen science is

about global contribution to real scientific work and also at the same

time about local police based learning that we're doing right here in our

community. Especially in California so much of what we do affects migratory

patterns, affects water quality, there are so many pieces that are interconnected

and I think one of the fantastic things about citizen science is that there is

no right answer the whole point of it is you don't know what you're going to find.

Advice for for teachers or other groups doing this kind of work is to let go

maybe make that space for failure, to make that space for the things that they

can't control or don't know. It can be uncomfortable but but if they really

embrace we're figuring this out together me with the students we're all in this

together and we don't know what we're gonna find out we see a really rich

learning opportunities for young people.

MEDITATION FOR BEGINNERS - Where to start - Duration: 7:47.

I 've been meditating for many years now

and even if at the beginning my relationship with meditation had ups and downs

eventually I realized I had to quiet my mind if I wanted a peaceful and balanced life.

What about you?

Our mind has tons of thoughts every day and it never stops

and this is really exhausting…

we are exhausted from this negative thinking, rumination and sometimes even self-sabotage.

I used to be a very anxious person,

I had a frenetic life but thanks to meditation

I learned to be more centered, more peaceful, to breath deeper

and today I'd like to share few advice to help you through this process when you are starting out.

There are so many different ways to meditate you maybe wonder

which is the right one for you.

I practice Mindful meditation

but in the past I also tried Mantra meditation

where you repeat a word or few words in order to focus your mind.

Well, you'll have to put a few of them to the test

in order to choose the one that feels more comfortable to you.

Choose one type and stick with it for at least a month

and if after that time you don't like it you can switch to something else.

I suggest you to start with a very easy meditation...

and that's a breathing meditation where you feel your breath from the beginning to the end…

You stay focused on the feeling that the breath gives you...

some of you will notice the fresh air in your nostrils,

some of you will feel the belly rising…

just concentrate on the area of your body where you feel the breath.

Your attention should stay with the sensation of the breath,

follow it through your nose all the way down to your lungs and back.

You shouldn't engage or follow your thoughts..in this meditation you just breath…

Now, remember that your mind will wander…for sure…

but that's normal...

when you realize you engaged some thoughts, just release them…

with no judging or criticizing…

it's perfectly normal to get lost…it's the practice…just gently let go…

Start small and you'll get better with time

It's not the length of time that matters,

it's the commitment to do it every single day.

Start with as little as 5 minutes and you can increase it with practice and time…

With consistency, mindfulness skills will grow stronger and remember,

don't expect benefits after one or 2 times …

you need to make it a habit and after few weeks you'll start to notice a change

You can meditate on a chair or on the floor

as you feel more comfortable and depending on your health issues.

Just try to sit up straight, so that your head and neck are in line with your spine.

I personally don't like to lay down as I may fall asleep

and in order to improve our balance and the way our mind works we need to stay awake.

If you sit on the floor remember hips should be higher than your knees in order not to restrict your blood flow...

so if you have a cushion or a pillow sit on the front edge.

Don't get crazy to put your feet on top of each other it's ok even if you just cross your legs.

Arms resting on thighs and hands resting on top of each other or just simply facing up.

What's important is that you are relaxed and your back is straight.

Meditation is supposed to make you feel better not to exhaust you!

Head facing forward slightly bend

Eyes,…it's up to you open or closed

I tend to get distracted with my eyes opened and I find it's easier to focus if they are closed...

Try not to get caught up in the "how to" meditate.

You don't need the perfect place, the perfect posture or the perfect cushion.

What really matter is that meditation should feel natural and easy,

wherever you are..even sit in your car…Practice will make things easier..

Don't find excuses you don't have time…5 minutes for your mental health is not asking too much, is it?

This might be the most important tip to help you start meditating.

Meditation is a time to be at peace with yourself.

Treat yourself with kindness when you meditate.

If you don't manage to rest your mind and you keep thinking for the whole time it's ok…

...just give yourself a little bit more time to adjust

The best way to start a meditation habit is to practice every single morning.

It's a great way to start your day, and it's much easier to do something first thing in the morning

than after a long day when you are tired.

If at the beginning you are struggling I suggest guided meditation:

I use Insight Timer App but there are many others.

Another good one is called Headspace so try them out...

Basically you listen to some meditation teacher's voices that guide you through each step

so you don't have to worry about what you should do or think…

You just follow the instructions and enjoy the ride

And remember to motivate yourself with a reward..

it will be easier to stick to a new habit if you do.

Many times we start out strong with a lot of energy and we loose it along the way

so in the end we don't build any habit.

So give yourself a reward every time you meditate.

For example, I love a nice long breakfast after meditation

The scientifically proven benefits are:

mastering your emotions, eliminate stress, balance your ups and downs,

increase your productivity, your creativity and you get to know your mind better...

So if meditation has been around for thousands of years there must be a reason why…

and that's because it's very beneficial…

many studies has been conducted especially in the past decades

and what came out is that meditation is very beneficial, it improves our health 360 degrees, mind, body and soul.

Meditation isn't always easy or even peaceful.

But it has truly amazing benefits,

and you can start today, NOW and continue for the rest of your life...
