So one thing that's interesting to me about this, and as an
armchair historian and geographer I'm sure you find interesting as well, is that the island is entirely in the District of Columbia
but in order to get there, you have to go through Virginia. So this is not part of the National Mall,
this is part of the George Washington Parkway another park run by the National Park Service
and it's only accessible by foot bridge from Virginia. There are no cars allowed on the island, no bicycles allowed on the island
so you have to go over there before you can even go to see anything.
So on the island what you'll see is there is actually a
memorial to Teddy Roosevelt in the center, not too far from the footbridge
and you know, Teddy Roosevelt is known as being like this avid outdoorsman
so it's actually a perfect park to honor him. Aside from that,
there are walking paths that go around the edge of the island, through the forest, along the river edge, and through, there's actually some marshland
and a boardwalk over it, which in the springtime is really beautiful with all the flowering plants, so
to get there, you can get there from the GW Parkway
but there's limited parking. If you want to walk or a bike
you can go to the Rosslyn Metro and then walk down the Mount Vernon
Trail near the Virginia side of the Francis Scott Key Bridge - that's Lee Highway North Lynn Street.
There's actually now a Capital Bikeshare station at the footbridge to the island.
I was going to mention that I just read that they had installed the Capital Bikeshare station there.

but that is a great way to get over there if you don't have other transportation.
Yeah, so also it was, the island was dedicated to Roosevelt, Teddy Roosevelt only in 1967, so the
memorial is among the newer of the you know granite memorials that you typically see in Washington.
It was originally, the the island was originally as farmland it then became a training site for black Union soldiers during the Civil War
but it was then turned later into a park. And so all of it has been
reforested. And this was a big overgrown Park in the early 1900s when this was,
or actually rather in the 1930s when it was
turned into the island that it is today.
As far as the history of the city goes this was pretty much
undeveloped for most of our city's history, and the other thing that I want to note that's interesting to me
is that a lot of people come on my tour and they have a comment about, Wow Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Memorial is huge!
You know as far as square mileage goes compared to some of the other presidential
memorials and Teddy's is actually more than ten times as big as Franklin's
Memorial is. Yeah. Yeah. I'd say so. They're very
they're very appropriate to the different Roosevelts because like the Teddy one is definitely like an outdoors hike and
Teddy Roosevelt, he would go mountain climbing,
he would go hiking actually he would this might actually make a good segway.
He would actually go hiking during his presidency in Rock Creek Park.
