Family despairs as search continues for missing Cape Town psychologist

Family despairs as search continues for missing Cape Town psychologist.

The family of missing Cape Town psychologist Diane Nelson faces another night of despair‚ with a SAPS spokesperson confirming that the search continues for the Claremont resident.    Nelson‚ 49‚ went missing on Saturday and her abandoned car was discovered parked outside Cecilia Forest the same night‚ reportedly with many of her valuables inside.    She is a resident of Claremont in the southern suburbs and is a therapist at the Crescent Clinic in the area.

She was reported missing after having last been seen at 8pm‚ and police say that the investigation is ongoing.    SANParks spokesperson Rey Thakhuli said that the search of the popular hiking trail was concluded on Sunday after mountain rescue teams were assisted by SAPS.      "It did not yield any results and was called off at approximately .30pm.

The search resumed again on Sunday morning at 10am‚ where the person still could not be located‚ and the search was called off by the police pending further investigations."   A Pink Ladies' missing persons poster has been widely spread throughout social media‚ with many of Nelson's clients pleading with the public to assist in her safe return.    "Diane Nelson was the couples' therapist we saw for a time.

She was so kind‚ caring and supportive of us both‚" said a Facebook user.

"It's breaking my heart to think of something bad happening to her.

I'm actually struggling with it quite a bit - life can be so incredibly unfair."   Wednesday marked day four of the search with no further clues yet coming to light. .

In Texas, A Summer Job That Helps Provide Temporary Refuge For Migrants - Duration: 6:28.

In Texas, A Summer Job That Helps Provide Temporary Refuge For Migrants

When I arrived at Casa Vides, I found a nondescript two-story brick building close enough to the border that you could walk to it.

This is a place that provides refuge for two types of people: those who evaded border patrol and those who were caught, handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and then released while their cases are still pending.

Casa Vides provides food, shelter and legal support to up to 40 people at a time.

It's run by the faith-based nonprofit, Annunciation House.

"My mom is an immigrant from South America so this issue has always been close to my heart," says Daniel Rottenborn, a 19-year-old volunteering for the summer.

He and 20-year-old volunteer Francis Brockman are both students at University of Notre Dame.

"For me," Brockman says, "I've taken a lot of Spanish classes and so I wanted to put that to use and just the situation with immigration today, like, the political climate.

It was something that I wanted to explore and learn more about.

So I feel like coming to the border was a pretty obvious choice.".

At this shelter, there are families and a number of teens — and that's an interesting experience for a young volunteer like Brockman.

"Sometimes there will be people that come into the house that are 19 or 20, like around our age, and they'll already have kids with them," Brockman says.

"So that's just an entirely different situation that I cannot even imagine at this point my life.".

Casa Vides said we couldn't talk to any of the residents.

But Brockman and Rottenborn have heard from teens here — some of whom crossed illegally instead of through a port of entry – about fleeing all kinds of violence on their journeys.

What little they say, says a lot.

"You see this 16-year-old kid," Rottenborn says.

"He's with his family.

You know, he has a bed, he has food for the first time in a while.

And he's just sitting there quiet.

It strikes me is vastly different than the experience of a normal American teenager.".

Brockman and Rottenborn could have gotten more typical summer jobs.

Brockman says his other option was working at a bagel shop back home in Ohio.

The two are living at Casa Vides sharing a room adjacent to the migrants' rooms.

They spend their time doing chores from cooking to cleaning to organizing games.

"Along this wall here, we have more stuff for babies," Brockman says.

"We have a room full of sheets, dry goods, medicine.".

"Yeah, we have a closet full of cleaning supplies, baby diapers, sanitary products, all of the hygiene and health-oriented stuff as well," Rotterborn adds.

Rotterborn says he and Brockman aren't trained on how to work with babies and children.

The shelter's goal is to promote independence and allow parents to do what they do best, parent.

"The resiliency that we see from these kids when they come into our house, and they start playing with the toys, and immediately, it's like that, you flip a switch, and they go from scared kids hiding behind their parents to just kids," Rotterborn says.

This past weekend, a bus pulled up and 32 undocumented parents got off.

With a few small belongings, including papers, they quietly walked into Casa Vides, greeted by staff with hugs.

The parents had been separated from their children at the border.

Their criminal cases were dropped after Trump reversed his policy on family separation.

Casa Vides tells migrants they can stay at the shelter as long as they want.

Many will connect with family members in the U.S.

and move out to live with them while they wait for their day in court.

Bill Shorten's admission Labor would repeal tax cuts for small businesses leaves colleagues hanging - Duration: 7:08.

Bill Shorten's admission Labor would repeal tax cuts for small businesses leaves colleagues hanging

Bill Shorten's dramatic company tax announcement was unconventional, unorthodox, verging on strange.

In a single word answer to a journalist on Tuesday, he revealed a Labor Government would put up tax for small and medium businesses.

"So you will repeal the tax cut between $10 and $50 million as already legislated?" he was asked.

"Yes.

That confirmation was a shock for the business lobby groups that had been feeling a little optimistic they could nudge Labor away from reversing company tax cuts that have already come into effect.

For the 20,000 businesses facing a higher tax bill under a future Labor Government it was likely to be deeply jarring news.

ALP focus has been on big end of town.

Depending on their turnover, the tax rate for those businesses has already fallen — or is about to — from 30 per cent to 27.

5 per cent.

Mr Shorten had just told them that tax cut could be short-lived.

And he has left open the question of whether he'd raise tax for quite modestly sized businesses, with a turnover of between $2 million and $10 million.

It is true that Labor has been hammering an anti-company tax cut message since Treasurer Scott Morrison announced the plan to cut the corporate rate two years ago.

So there is some validity to Labor's claim that this stance should not have been a huge surprise.

But it has caused tension and a senior ALP source concedes it was not "perfectly executed" and some in the Labor caucus have their "knickers in a knot" about the way it was done.

There is one day left in the intense environment of Parliament House for Labor to cope with the fallout from this big tax announcement, then a less restful than usual winter break featuring five by-elections.

Resisting company tax cuts has already been a big part of Labor's message for voters in those seats, but the focus has been on the big end of town such as the banks and multinationals.

Shorten was all news, no sweeteners.

The Senate has agreed with that stand and refused to cut the tax rate for those businesses, but it has cut tax for anyone with a turnover of up to $50 million and those gradual reductions are underway.

Until Mr Shorten's Tuesday clarification, Labor had only hinted that it might reverse the tax cuts for small-and-medium-sized operations.

His startling strategy to confirm Labor would roll back the tax cuts comes as the ALP fights five by-elections — and Labor figures are worried about losing two of those five seats, Braddon in north-west Tasmania and Longman north of Brisbane.

The political handbook says a political party delivers a message like that with some sweeteners to balance the bad news.

Mr Shorten has been spruiking that he would offer business a better trained workforce, speedier broadband and more infrastructure.

But the Opposition has certainly not been ready with a carefully crafted campaign to offset that higher tax message with an explanation of its alternative use for the $20 billion raised from putting company tax back up.

The political risk is intensified because it is a week after he pledged to reverse the income tax cuts that passed the Parliament last week.

An incoming Labor Government could wind back the personal income tax cuts before most of them start, as much of the change takes at least five years to kick in.

Clunky way to drop policy news.

But scrapping the business tax changes would mean putting the tax back up after it had already fallen.

The clunky way of dropping policy news also left his colleagues in a precarious position.

The backbencher from Bass, Ross Hart, ended up most exposed when he stumbled through an interview on Tasmanian radio unwilling to support Mr Shorten's decision.

Much more senior and experienced members of the Labor team have also been caught short.

Environment Spokesman Mark Butler conceded it was a "captain's call" from Mr Shorten.

When the question is — did shadow cabinet sign off on it? Or was it discussed in caucus? It is already clear that the party's message is way off track.

Labor hopes to find its way again during the month of by-election campaigning.

While the Government is already counting the number of businesses in those five seats that face a tax hike.

Filmmaker looking for funds to make documentary about her 'second mother' - Duration: 4:10.

Filmmaker looking for funds to make documentary about her 'second mother'

Filmmaker looking for funds to make documentary about her 'second mother'.

A filmmaker who wants to tell the story of her "second mother" is looking for funding.

Diana Keam grew up under the care of her biological mother and Margaret Bogopa Matlala, who went beyond being just a nanny and was like a true mother to her.

"Growing up in South Africa I had two mothers.

My white mother was an ex-Catholic hippy of Irish descent.

My black mother was a traditional African woman who became a pastor in her community after helping to raise me‚ my six siblings‚ my own children and three of her own kids.

"My biological mother died recently of Alzheimer's and my 'other' mother is in her eighties.

As she faces the end of her journey‚ I am facing the need to tell the story of our families before it is too late‚" said Keam about her fundraising campaign.

Keam said the documentary would weave together the many and richly varied threads that made up the story of her family which Margaret had witnessed intimately through the different generations.

The film is called "Don't be late for my funeral"‚ something Matlala said to her when they were burying her mother earlier this year.

"She said that when it's her turn to bid farewell to this world I must arrive for her funeral the night before.

I should not be late.

And this is just one of the beautiful things about her‚ she embraces everything.

She is funny‚ engaging and warm‚" said Keam.

I am facing the need to tell the story of our families before it is too late.

"The money will be used in the development and production of the feature-length documentary film.

It is not enough to make the film from start to finish but it is enough to get the show on the road and help us to attract additional funding and interest." Keam has already secured R90‚000 but her target is R500‚000.

"The support has been overwhelming and I am seeing more and more interest on social media platforms‚" she said.

Meanwhile‚ in the past week Thundafund.com has surpassed a significant milestone with R20-million raised‚ with 384 fully funded projects and contributions from over 17‚500 backers.

The arts‚ music and design sectors have seen the most success through crowdfunding in South Africa.

"Sugarbird Gin‚ raised an astounding R1‚086‚973 with their introduction to the South African market.

With contributions from 155 backers‚ their campaign proved that despite gin drinkers being spoiled for choice‚ there is still plenty space in our emerging economy to accommodate new ideas through innovative funding options‚" said Zane Groenewald‚ Thundafund spokesperson.   .

Fire classifications of facade cladding for high rise buildings - Duration: 2:01.

Would you rather wrap your buildings in materials that are proven to burn and emit heat and toxic smoke?

Or would you prefer to use non-combustible materials?

Our stance is clear and has been for many years.

By law, all cladding products sold in the UK must be CE marked which means manufacturers must

declare a fire performance classification known as a Euro Class Rating for each of their products.

The Euro Class system determines a product's fire performance by measuring

a comprehensive set of characteristics.

The classifications run from A1 to F. Only insulation and cladding materials classified

as A1 or A2 can be classified as limited combustibility, or better, non-combustible.

Classifications B to F are combustible and these products can burn.

The British Standard Class O is a national standard but is not transferable to Euro Class

and only tests for surface spread of flame, whereas the Euro Class classifications test

for ignitability, flame spread, heat release, smoke production

and propensity for producing flaming droplets or particles.

Class O has little relevance to a product's combustibility.

For all mid and high-rise buildings Rockpanel only recommend cladding and insulation material

with the Euro Class rating A2 or better.

When designing tall buildings to comply with current guidance a façade composed of components

that fall into the B to F categories will require full-scale testing

which can provide unrealistic results and is very expensive.

Because of the non-combustible nature of A1 and A2 classified cladding,

these components do not require any further testing.

So when considering the cladding components of your tall or sensitive building,

why take the risk and cost of combustible materials?
