The First Well

Retold by BookBox

There once was a small kingdom around a lake.

There once was a small kingdom around a lake.

One very hot summer,

it did not rain and the lake dried up.

it did not rain and the lake dried up.

People grew anxious

and went to the King.

"It has not rained for so long.

Our fields are barren!" said the farmers.

Our fields are barren!" said the farmers.

"There are no fish to catch.

"There are no fish to catch.

How shall we earn a living?" asked the fishermen.

"Save us from disaster, good King,"

"Save us from disaster, good King,"

urged the women, as their children

cried with thirst.

The King sent

his four generals

in all directions to look for water.

The first general

went east,

towards the sunrise;

the second

went south,

to the dust

and heat;

the third

went west,

where the sun sets;

and the fourth

followed the North Star.

followed the North Star.

They searched

day and night,

night and day;

high and low they searched everywhere,

but in vain.

Three of the generals

Three of the generals

returned, empty-handed.

returned, empty-handed.

But the general

who had gone north

was determined not to fail his King.

was determined not to fail his King.

At last, he reached a cold mountain village.

At last, he reached a cold mountain village.

As he sat

at the foot of the mountain,

an old woman came by

and sat next to him.

The general pointed at the horizon

The general pointed at the horizon

and said,

"I belong to a beautiful kingdom,

where it has not rained for a whole year.

Can you help me find water?"

Can you help me find water?"

The woman motioned the general

to follow her up the mountain and into a cave.

to follow her up the mountain and into a cave.

"We have no water in our country either," she said.

"We have no water in our country either," she said.

"We have no water in our country either," she said.

Then, pointing

to the icicles in the cave,

she continued:

"We call this ice.

Take some,

and your kingdom will never go thirsty again."

and your kingdom will never go thirsty again."

The general broke off

a huge piece,

loaded it onto his horse-cart

and rushed back home.

By the time he reached the court,

the enormous icicle had melted

into a small lump of ice.

Nobody in the court had ever seen ice,

so everybody gazed at it with wonder.

"This must be a water-seed!"

one of the ministers exclaimed suddenly.

The King ordered the 'water-seed' to be sowed immediately.

The King ordered the 'water-seed' to be sowed immediately.

While the farmers dug

a hole,

the lump dwindled in the sun.

They swiftly placed the seed

in the hole,

but

before they could cover it up,

before they could cover it up,

it had vanished.

The farmers there grew confused and worried.

They dug deeper and deeper into the earth,

all night long, looking for the mysterious seed.

all night long, looking for the mysterious seed.

At the break of dawn,

the King found

the farmers fast asleep

around a hole.

Curious, he peeped in

and cried out in amazement:

"Wake up, my worthy men -

the water-seed has sprouted!

There's water in the hole!"

This is how

the first well

was created.

How To Master A Song In 10 Minutes (For Beginners) - Duration: 11:28.

hi Mikey here from the loft tapes dot com in today's video I'm going to show you how

to master a song in just 10 minutes now mastering is the final step in the

process but if you've got a great song great recorded tracks and a fantastic

mix you really don't need to overcomplicate it

the key to mastering in a home studio is to use reference tracks typically home

studios are either in a spare bedroom or converted garage and it's not an ideal

listening environment to accurately hear what's going on in the mix that's why

reference tracks just give us that great points of reference that we can aim for

and bring our mixes more in line with so the first thing I like to do when

mastering is to bounce down a final version of the mix and import it into a

new session and this just allows you to purely focus on mastering and not worry

about tweak in individual settings of tracks so usually there's three main

plugins that I might use when mastering the first is EQ nut just helps bring it

more and lime tonally with the reference track the second is compression and that

just glues the mix together nice link can add some punch

finally a limiter and that just brings the track up to a commercial volume so

that you can compete with other songs on the radio so let's open up the da W and

I'll walk you through my process so the first track highlighted here is the

final version of the mix and this was just bounce down at the same sample rate

and bit depth that it was recorded at and the second track is the reference

track that I've just dragged in that we can use so the first thing you want to

do is just level match your reference track with your mix so though you not

being fooled by loudness while you were doing your processing so let's just take

a listen

okay great so they're the same volume now so while master and I found it

useful to find the loudest path to the track that you're going to be processing

and just loop it round so before we add any processing let's just a B between

our mix in the reference track so that we know what we're trying to aim for

with the processing

okay so straight away with the reference track I'm hearing more clarity the

low-end sounds slightly cleaner and there's just more sort of shimmer at the

top end so that information tells us exactly what we need to be aiming for

when we bring up the EQ so for this tutorial I'm just using the stock EQ

that comes with logic and a press play start using the EQ and a B in between

our mix and the reference and just see if we can bring it slightly closer

tonally

I says

great okay so that's making a huge difference already so as you can see

we've removed some of the low-end rumble giving it a slight bump at 74 Hertz and

then we've actually removed quite a lot of low mid there 335 Hertz and we've

reduced that by 3.5 DB which is quite a lot when it comes to mastering but I

felt that this track just needed it to bring it more in line with the reference

track and finally I've given it a slight bump up at 6200 Hertz and then felt with

some of the sins who were quite harsh so we just rolled off a little bit of that

top end okay so let's just have one final a/b between our track and the

reference track and with the EQ on and back past just so you can hear the

difference that's making

okay so that's sounding really good next of all I'm going to add a bit of

compression just to up the glow and control some of the peaks

so again with this on just you in the stock compressor that comes with

logic I'll press play and start playing around with the settings

okay so that's glueing the mix together nicely but what you can sometimes find

with the styles like this is the compressor it just starts pumping with

that low-end so a great way to get around that is to use a side chain so

here the logic compressor we've got a side chain so you would want to set this

to a high-pass filter and let's just engage that and see if that wood can

make a difference

yes so that sounding much cleaner now so what's happening with the sidechain is

it's actually removing some of that low-end that's feeding the compressor so

let's take a listen to the sidechain in solo so you can hear

yes everything below two hundred and thirty Hertz is no longer being fed

through the compressor and that's just cleaning up the signal nicely okay so

the final step in mastering is to bring your track up to a commercial volume and

I'm sure you've all read on forums around loudness Wars and things like

that and there's a lot of different opinions out there but in today's sort

of online streaming world it's no longer as big of an issue a lot of the online

streaming platforms actually level match songs so there's no point sacrificing

dynamics but to just gain a couple of DB so the way we're going to bring the

track up to a commercial level is by using a limiter and again for this

example I'm just going to be using the stock limiter that comes with logic so

while mastering I've found around minus 10 average volume is a great place to

shoot for and the way that you can see this is on a vu meter which shows

average volume the difference between a vu meter and your VAW meters is that the

DOW meters show peak volume so it's not really the same thing when it comes to

mastering so if you don't have a vu meter that comes with UD aw you can pick

them up really cheap this vu meters from waves and it was just on a special offer

so the first thing you need to do is just calibrate your vu meter to minus 10

and that just means that when the needle hits zero it's going to be an average

volume of minus 10 okay so that we can set the limiter to the right level I'm

just going to bring up the reference track back up to unity volume so this

might get a little bit louder in your headphones so on a limiter these usually

a setting called ceiling that you just need to bring back

to around - not 0.5 2-1 DB and that's just going to make sure that when the

tracks bounce down into different formats it's not going to clip okay so

I'm just going to bring up the gain on the limiter while we're playing through

the track and just keep bringing it up until we see the needle hits around zero

okay so we've brought 9.3 DB of gain there so I'm just gonna a be that with a

reference truck and see that if that's at a similar volume now

so as you can see on the reference truck it's actually peeking around one or two

there on the vu meter so it's obviously been mustered slightly hotter so we can

try just bringing up the gain slightly so you see if we can bring that more in

line

okay so that's brought it more in line level wise but I feel like we're

sacrificing some of the dynamics in our mix now so I'm just going to bring that

down slightly okay so there you have it three easy

steps to mastering a song just some EQ compression and limiting to bring it up

to that final level and from there he can bounce down to whatever formats

needed for the platform that you're releasing your music on like I was

saying at the beginning this doesn't need to be an over complicated process

and he can master a song in just 10 minutes a couple of minutes on each

plugin if you have any questions about

mastering please just leave a comment below and I'll get back to you and now

Breaking News - Perk-loving blazers won't pay for England World Cup tickets - Duration: 5:42.

England's smooth progress to the last 16 of the World Cup has captivated the nation — except, it seems, the blazers on the FA council

The 127 representatives who make up the council should be among those embracing the tournament to the limit

Yet given the opportunity to buy tickets for England's games in Russia, just two of them have taken up the offer

Admittedly the blazers, who love their freebie Wembley perks, would have to pay their own way to Russia, while the FA board are being invited to attend one knockout game each

But you'd assumed the passion for football among the councillors would have seen a lot more than two of them wanting to watch England in person at the World Cup

The council includes 43 county representatives, 19 life or senior vice-presidents, 10 divisional representatives, 12 Premier League and Football League representatives, 18 affiliated associations, six supporters, disability and inclusion representatives, five vice-presidents, a chairman, two vice-chairmen and the chief executive

Stan Collymore, who predictably tore into the press over team-sheet-gate, posted a Twitter video of a packed Moscow nightclub going strong at 2am on the morning of England's game against Panama

This is the same Collymore who failed to make it to Nizhny Novgorod to record interviews for his Russia Today programme, telling people he had a migraine

Perhaps that was brought on by the loud dance music he shared with his Twitter followers

If England keep to their strict media schedule, then the group stages will be over before manager Gareth Southgate or captain Harry Kane sits down for any length of time with daily newspaper reporters, who routinely ask the questions that set the football agenda

Southgate has fulfilled all his FIFA obligations with rights-holders, appearing at pre-match and post-match press conferences plus giving a little extra content to the English media

Yet why should the FA care? Their forensic stage-management of player and management availability has resulted in Southgate receiving fabulous press without the need to explain his strategy in any great detail

In contrast, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has met the press every other day and is relaxed about the England Press Corps staying in the Belgium team hotel in Kaliningrad

The Repino love-in continues, with the England players and management returning to their hotel base after the victory against Panama to find personalised matryoshka dolls in their rooms

The FA media and operations departments organised a St Petersburg artist to paint pictures of each player in the squad plus Gareth Southgate and assistant Steve Holland on their respective dolls

The TV highlights of Portugal v Iran provided by FIFA's world feed showed the VAR reviews of the two penalty incidents, but made no mention of the one in which Cristiano Ronaldo escaped a red card for an elbow and throwing a punch that missed

It gives support to Iran coach and former Manchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz's view that Ronaldo receives special treatment from FIFA

The lack of superstars in the England squad is understood to have made it easier for Gareth Southgate and his assistants to go though the set-piece drills that are so important to their game plan

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Southgate delighted a fans' forum held at Elland Road when asked why his team were playing a warm-up game in Leeds

Southgate replied that most England fans were from the north and he lived in Harrogate

Golden Arrows on the hunt for a striker and a pair of fullbacks - Duration: 3:17.

Golden Arrows on the hunt for a striker and a pair of fullbacks

Golden Arrows on the hunt for a striker and a pair of fullbacks.

Lamontville Golden Arrows remain on the hunt for a striker and a pair of fullbacks as they prepare for the new Premier Soccer League season.

Coach Clinton Larsen has told TimesLIVE that those are the two major areas he is looking to strengthen ahead of the campaign‚ which will also include an MTN8 quarterfinal against Mamelodi Sundowns in early August.

"We have opted for continuity and do not expect major changes to our squad from last year‚ but are looking for a striker and left and right-sided fullbacks‚ and that is a process that is on-going‚" Larsen said.

It was recently reported that the club has Congolese striker Mike Dombo on trial.

He is currently plying his trade in Swaziland with Manzini Wanderers.

"We also have four players that will not be returning to the club‚ [defender] Lehlohonolo Nonyane‚ [midfielder] Jabulani Shongwe and [striker] Thomas Chideu‚ who have not had their contracts renewed.

"Then the loan of [attacking midfielder] Kuda Mahachi came to an end and as you know he has signed for Orlando Pirates.

But for the rest we expect them to remain." Golden Arrows are a week into their pre-season and Larsen says he has been pleased with how the players returned from their holidays.

"We have a seven-week programme in the build-up to the start of the season and all our tests showed that the players have followed their off-season training programmes‚ which is obviously really pleasing‚" Larsen said.

"These first few weeks are really about hard work‚ it is very demanding on the boys‚ but they are looking good and our aim is obviously to have them in tip-top shape come the start of the season.

"We will not be going into camp‚ but staying at home and playing friendlies against the KZN PSL and NFD teams‚ and then we have also lined up a game against BidVest Wits‚ who will be travelling to the province." Larsen says the match against Sundowns in the MTN8 will give them a good early test of where they are for the new season.

"It's a nice game to start the season‚ you always want to measure yourself against the best teams‚" the coach says.

"We always look forward to the Sundowns game because no-one gives us a chance‚ which takes a lot of pressure off‚ but we have got a few good results against them recently.".

Thai rescuers to pump water from cave in search for soccer team missing four days - Duration: 7:28.

Thai rescuers to pump water from cave in search for soccer team missing four days

Efforts to rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach who have been missing inside a flooded cave in northern Thailand for four days hinge on pumping out water so that navy divers have room to operate, according to the first high-level Thai official to visit the site.

Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda told reporters that navy SEAL divers leading the search were seriously handicapped by muddy water that had filled some chambers of the large cave to the ceilings.

He said the divers could proceed only when enough water was pumped out so there would be space between the water and the ceiling to make it safer to work.

The divers will also soon start using special oxygen tanks that provide longer diving times, he said yesterday.

A SEAL diver said the water was so murky that even with lights they could not see where they were going underwater, so they needed to be able to lift their heads above the water.

Mr Anupong said rescuers would be working night and day in the dark cave.

"The SEAL team will be working nonstop because it's already dark here too," he said.

"So night and day doesn't make a big difference.

They'll just need to rotate.".

About a dozen navy divers and other rescuers re-entered the cave yesterday morning to search for the boys, aged 11-16, who had been missing since their coach took them to the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex on Saturday after a practice match.

But the search had to be suspended again because of high water.

Divers have been seeking a way forward through the chambers of the cave complex, but have been forced to suspend their search several times.

The authorities are also seeking alternative ways in, using helicopters and search parties on foot to find possible holes in the ceilings of other parts of the cave.

A glimmer of hope was dashed yesterday afternoon after explorers found two fissures in the rock on the mountain in which the cave is located.

After evaluation, experts found neither could be used as a "chimney" to gain access to the cave.

Rain that fell overnight increased the difficulty of exploring inside the cave.

However, the initial chambers near the cave's entrance are dry, and a power line was extended inside to provide light and ventilation and help the divers communicate with those outside.

The boys and their 25-year-old coach entered the cave in Chiang Rai province late on Saturday afternoon.

A mother reported that her son did not return from football practice that day, setting off the search.

Relatives pray for success.

Relatives of the missing boys and others performed a ritual Tuesday morning calling for those who are missing.

They played drums and gongs and two relatives held fishing nets as symbols to fish out lost spirits from the cave.

Organiser Jiratat Kodyee said the ritual was a traditional way of showing support for the boys' families.

The cave complex extends several kilometres and has wide chambers and narrow passageways with rocky outcrops and changes in elevation.

Still, officials have said they were hopeful the boys found a safe space away from the floods.

Rising waters on Monday evening frustrated efforts to search farther in the cave, and efforts were halted temporarily.

During the night, rescue teams and electricians extended a power line one kilometre and communication lines into the cave.

"We hope this will provide lights for work and fans for ventilation for the SEAL team," Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said.

"Also, it means we can use electric engines to pump water out of the cave as well.

Parents waited overnight in tents outside the cave entrance as rain poured.

Medics sat in a tent nearby, and bicycles, backpacks and football cleats the boys left behind remained at the entrance.

At a prayer session Monday evening, some of the boys' relatives walked inside the cave entrance, where their cries echoed off the walls.

"My son, come on out! I am waiting for you here!" one woman cried.

Another kneeled down near the bicycles and prayed, asking "where is my child?".

Authorities have said footprints and handprints were found inside the cave complex, and that tourists trapped there by past floods had been rescued after the waters receded.

Getting farther into the cave has required lots of oxygen and special diving skills, which would also complicate rescue efforts once the boys were found, officials said.

The cave, cut into a mountainside near the border with Myanmar, can flood severely during the rainy season, which runs from June to October, and there are warnings against exploring then.
