Which Water Is Best For Health? Hint: Don't Discount The Tap - Duration: 12:20.

Which Water Is Best For Health? Hint: Don't Discount The Tap

You can buy water with electrolytes, minerals or completely "purified." You can buy it with the pH changed to make it alkaline.

You can purify your own tap water or even add nutrients back into it.

But after seeing a video of a pricey, high-tech filter (about $400 U.S.

on sale) that you can monitor with your phone, we wondered, how much of our water filtration fixation is healthy, and how much of it is hype?.

As it turns out, scientists say that most tap water in the U.S.

is just as good as the water in bottles or streaming out of a filter.

"Assuming that the [tap] water satisfies all health and safety codes for the community, yeah, it's perfectly fine," says Dan Heil, a professor of health and human performance at Montana State University.

U.S.

tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, which sets safety thresholds for the amount of microorganisms, chemicals and other contaminants in the water.

"In general, the drinking water quality in the U.S.

is very good," says Stuart Batterman, a professor of environmental health sciences at University of Michigan.

Of course, there are exceptions, the most glaring being the lead pollution of Flint, Michigan's water brought on by crumbling infrastructure and government mismanagement.

The toxic effects of lead can be especially troublesome in children, and even low levels of lead exposure have been linked to nervous system damage, learning disabilities, short stature and impaired hearing.

In a situation like that, there are quite a few filters that can remove lead from the water, according to the Environmental Working Group.

Back in 2016, NPR created a test you can use to check if you have lead pipes in your home.

If you want to investigate the safety of your water further, this tool can show you if your water is in compliance with federal drinking water standards.

But say you live somewhere with safe water and want to run your tap water through a filter before drinking it.

All that's really doing, Heil says, is making it more palatable by changing the odor or the taste.

There's nothing really wrong with that, he says.

If liking the taste of your water makes you drink more, then go for it.

When it comes to health, Tanis Fenton, a registered dietitian and epidemiologist at Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, says the typical water filter sitting in your fridge won't really do anything.

It probably won't even do that much for safety, since she says microbiological decontamination generally requires a sterilization step using UV light or sterilization chemicals.

"Water can be contaminated with bacteria, or viruses, or amoeba.

which would cause disease," she says.

"These filters don't do anything to make water safer with respect to those things.".

There's also no benefit to taking the naturally dissolved minerals out of municipally regulated tap water, Fenton says.

There actually might even be a bit of a risk if people over-purify their water, says Neil Ward, an analytical chemistry professor at the University of Surrey in the U.K.

If you constantly drink sterilized water, your gut flora could become used to that.

And then in the off chance you drink water that isn't sterilized, he says your gut could react even more dramatically (and unpleasantly) to microbes or nitrates in the water.

"A lot of that has been brought about because we have become very specialized in removing things from our normal diet," Ward says.

"When we are exposed to untreated things, we have reactions to it.".

But what about adding minerals like calcium, potassium and magnesium to the water, like the filter from the video? If you're trying to replace all of the minerals from a healthy diet with mineralized water, Heil says it's probably just not going to happen.

He says you'd have to drink gallons upon gallons of mineralized water before any health benefits are realized.

"Rather than relying first on some fancy, expensive water, the first thing would be to modify your diet so that you are getting in all of the essential minerals and nutrients that your diet should be able to provide on it's own," he says.

Extra minerals from water won't hurt you, he says, but you'll probably just end up peeing them out if you are already getting enough nutrients in your diet.

Another confusing water option lining the shelves of grocery stores is alkaline water.

Alkaline is a fancy way of saying "basic," and this water's pH is a bit higher than standard tap water.

Some proponents say this water can neutralize acid in your bloodstream or help prevent cancer and heart disease, but there's not a lot of research to back that up.

Fenton says there are no health benefits to alkaline water, but there have been instances of side effects, like reduced gallbladder emptying and toxic reactions.

Baby rats given alkaline water even showed low body weight and cardiac problems.

"Those things are really worrying," Fenton says.

"When there's no health benefits, it's really questionable why anyone would want alkaline water.".

Water, just like cars, cell phones and shoes, is a part of the commercial market, says Ward.

Purifying or adding minerals to water are ways to convince customers that one product is better than its competitors, even if in reality the only thing that changes about the water is the taste.

People also tend to like the idea of a quick and easy way to take the "healthy" route, says Heil, and buying a bottle of water with minerals in it is easier than uprooting a diet to make it more nutritious.

"Everybody's got to drink," he says.

"Water all by itself isn't incredibly sexy, and we're all attracted to sexy new things.

With a health outcome attached to it, people like that idea.".

Filter manufacturers often use an environmental angle to sell their products, asking their audience to think about all the plastic bottles of water you could stop using if you could just create perfect water in your own home.

But cartridges and filters must be replaced, and then disposed of or recycled in some way.

For a Brita pitcher, that's every 40 gallons or about every two months that you are tossing out a filter or shipping it off to be recycled into a bike rack or watering can.

At the end of the day, if you are trying to improve your health, help the planet, and save your wallet, filling up a reusable water bottle with tap water is a good way to start.

"Tap water has, I think, become underrated as a source of healthy water," says Heil.

Not to mention that it's basically free and creates less waste than the alternatives.

But water filter manufacturers urge a cautious approach.

Faebian Bastiman, the chief technical officer of the high-tech water filter company Mitte, featured in the video mentioned above, argues that the water delivered to your house only has to legally comply with not having "significant amounts of bad stuff in it." He also says municipal governments don't regulate the pipes inside your house or apartment complex.

Having a filter, he argues, could be a last line of defense if there's something gross hanging out in those pipes.

However, the University of Michigan's Batterman notes that water utilities design and operate their systems to maintain a residual level of disinfectants to be in the water at the tap that should prevent microbial growth or biofilms.

A water filter should only provide the last treatment or "polishing," he says.

And at the end of the day, the most crucial thing is to actually drink water and help your body stay hydrated.

Change of venue for land expropriation hearings in Tshwane not as result of pressure‚ committee says - Duration: 3:31.

Change of venue for land expropriation hearings in Tshwane not as result of pressure‚ committee says

Change of venue for land expropriation hearings in Tshwane not as result of pressure‚ committee says.

The joint constitutional review committee has refuted suggestions that its public hearings in Tshwane were moved as a result of pressure from any political party or civic organisation.

The committee is hearing public views into whether section 25 of the Constitution needs to be amended to allow for expropriation of land without compensation.

The committee said on Saturday that its only consideration in changing the venue for the hearings in Tshwane was to "create an environment that is conducive for fruitful hearings".

"This decision was taken to ensure that the people coming to the hearings present their view in an environment that will ensure maximum productive participation‚" said Vincent Smith‚ co-chairperson of the committee.

He said it was also worth mentioning that the committee had received more people than it had expected at all the hearings held so far.

"It was thus important that a bigger venue that can cater for a larger group of people be found considering that the Tshwane hearings will be over a weekend‚" Smith emphasised.

"While the Committee acknowledges that the decision was taken later than it should have‚ it was assured by the Municipality (City of Tshwane) that measures will be put in place to transport people from the initial venue to the new venue.

Furthermore‚ emergency communications initiatives were undertaken to make people and stakeholders aware of the venue change.

"The Committee remains confident that the change of venue will in no way adversely impact the hearings and that adequate measures have been put in place to mitigate any inconvenience that might have been caused by the change of venue‚" Smith said.

The joint constitutional review committee (CRC) will wrap up its provincial public hearings next week with both delegations holding hearings in the Western Cape.

The committee also announced a bigger venue for the final day of its hearings.

"The committee decided to change the venue for the final provincial leg of the public hearings in order to accommodate as many people as possible in one venue.

The new venue for the final provincial public hearings programme on Saturday‚ August 4 2018‚ attended by the full committee complement‚ will now be at the Friends of God Church in Goodwood‚ Cape Town‚" the committee said.

On Wednesday‚ a delegation will start with public hearings in Oudtshoorn before it moves to Beaufort West the next day.

The other delegation will hold public hearings in Citrusdal on Thursday and in Swellendam on Friday.

Service Dog Registries To Streamline Travel For Veterans With 'Invisible Injuries' - Duration: 12:32.

The family missed their flight to Key West and drove six hours back home.

Many veterans and active-duty service members use psychiatric service dogs to help alleviate the everyday challenges of PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury and Military Sexual Trauma — conditions that service dog advocates call "invisible injuries." Now, the service dog community is eyeing a dog certification system to streamline travel and leisure for veterans who, like Crowell, are frustrated with the arduous process and stigmas attached to taking trips.

"Their life is getting smaller".

Rory Diamond is the CEO of K9s For Warriors, a nonprofit organization that bills itself as the largest provider of psychiatric service dogs for veterans.

"Most of our graduates would rather not fly," he says of the veterans who have passed through the K9s For Warriors pairing and training program.

"We realize that their life is getting smaller because of fake and poorly trained service dogs and we want their life to be big.

We want them to have every opportunity.".

Diamond is referring to controversy this year surrounding the influx of pets boarding planes under the guise of emotional support or service animals.

The 1986 Air Carrier Access Act does not define emotional support animals, creating an opportunity for enterprising passengers to pass off their household pets as ESAs to avoid paying pet fees.

Psychiatric service dogs are different.

They perform tasks to interrupt mental and emotional crises, such as waking their owners from nightmares, distracting them from painful flashbacks, and making space in crowded areas.

And unlike emotional support animals, psychiatric service dogs are protected under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

Even still, the ADA does not set a behavioral standard for service dogs, nor require any training.

"There's no real across-the-board standard for behavior or tasks for all service dogs.

And there's a number of reasons for that, one of which is that there's so many types of service dogs," says Sheila Goffe, vice president of government relations for the American Kennel Club.

"But the concerns that a lot of people have had.

is that we're seeing a lot of poorly trained service dogs out there that can actually be a threat to public health.".

"Zoo-like atmosphere".

In January, a viral photo of a woman trying to board a United Airlines flight with an emotional support peacock prompted the carrier to tighten its policies on emotional support animals.

United says it has seen a 75 percent increase in passengers boarding with ESAs, year after year.

American Airlines notes that in the last three years, three times as many emotional support animals boarded its aircrafts — birds, sloths, kangaroos and pigs among them — than service animals, according to a comment filed by the carrier with the DOT.

American describes the "zoo-like atmosphere" of airplane cabins crowded with emotional support animals, which are often registered online by for-profit companies that provide neon "support animal" vests and paper certificates for a fee.

"Lady with dog lying on the floor, comforting the dog," one American Airlines flight attendant documented in a flight service report last year.

"The 2 emotional [support] dogs were snapping at one another and agitated," another attendant noted earlier this year.

Those instances, service animal advocates say, create challenges for veterans who might not look disabled.

"When a veteran walks into a public store or restaurant and gets a stink eye because the person before him was there with a fraudulent dog, it puts a lot of stress on them," says Gina Esoldi of Next Step Service Dogs.

Crowell, the veteran who sued American Airlines, says the general population doesn't understand veterans who have service dogs.

He's received disapproving glances and invasive questions about his dog Bella.

"A service dog means you're blind, you're faking it, or you're crazy," says Crowell of public perception.

In addition, veterans must provide documentation of the tasks their service dogs perform at least 48 hours before travel, according to ACAA guidelines.

They can be questioned about whether their dogs are service animals and what tasks that dog performs for them.

Most travel and leisure companies also require verification of vaccination.

"You make one call to the airline and you get the runaround," Crowell says.

"People think that having a service dog gives you magical access.

But it makes you have to deal with other human beings every step of the way.".

"Improving the social mobility of veterans".

Two registries in development would offer legitimacy for veterans with psychiatric service dogs.

Diamond likens the idea of a registry to the TSA pre-check system: instead of providing paperwork that proves their disability and their dogs' vaccinations, veterans present a searchable identification number to any travel or leisure provider.

That number — on an I.D.

card or a dog vest patch — can be used to verify the dog has been tested by an independent evaluator on its ability to perform tasks that alleviate symptoms of psychiatric disability, as well as on the dog's behavior in public spaces.

It might also link to veterinary records and proof of military service.

The first registry is called Operation Service Dog Access and was created by American Humane, the organization best known for its certification that "No Animals Were Harmed" in the making of films and television shows.

Two dozen veterans, approved by a small network of independent evaluators, are doing a pilot program with the registry, according to the project's senior research adviser Amy McCullough.

American Humane hopes to open the registry in the fall, with the help of some service dog providers and Assistance Dogs International, the country's largest opt-in accreditation organization for service dogs.

The service will be free.

"This project is all about improving the social mobility of veterans," McCullough says.

Both registries face challenges.

Neither program has received formal support from major airlines or travel destinations yet, according to Diamond and McCullough, despite both holding meetings with a slew of industry giants.

"If we do it right, we will see large-scale adoption," says Keith Salisbury, who is leading technical support for the ASDAC registry on behalf of Dell subsidiary Pivotal.

"Access providers like airlines would love to have an easy way to deal with what has become a legitimate problem.".

And if both registry programs come to fruition, they might be in direct competition.

During a panel discussion at the Association of Service Dog Providers for Military Veterans annual conference, Diamond said he knows that similar programs are out there, but that the ASDAC is the only "collaborative way to take hold of this issue for ourselves and not have it imposed upon us.

McCullough of Operation Service Dog Access had not heard of the ASDAC initiative.

She says that she hopes "people can work together to solve this issue and improve access.".

Both programs, in the long term, hope to expand their registries to all members of the service dog community.

Crowell believes that a registry system will vastly improve the relationship among veterans, their service dogs and access providers like airlines or rideshare services.

"Service dogs are only going to become more prevalent as war continues and as scientific research proves what this therapy can do," Crowell says.

"A registry creates communication and reduces barriers.

When people can gather and share information, it's a huge win for everyone.".

Chelsea preparing last-ditch £30m swoop for Arsenal contract rebel Aaron Ramsey - Duration: 2:03.

Chelsea are preparing a late move to sign Arsenal contract rebel Aaron Ramsey before the transfer deadline, according to reports

The Welsh midfielder is out of contract next summer and has yet to sign an extension, meaning Arsenal risk losing him for nothing

New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri identified midfield as the one area of his squad that still needs a touch of quality, and the Daily Mail claim Ramsey is the player he wants

Arsenal are still locked in talks with Ramsey's entourage, but do not want to go into the new season with the situation still unresolved and risk another Alexis Sanchez-style saga

Chelsea are monitoring talks closely and are ready to pounce if talks reach a deadlock

Arsenal would consider offers of just £30million for Ramsey should he categorically reject the contract offer currently on the table and choose to run down his contract

Ramsey is one of five players new Arsenal boss Unai Emery considers as captain material and the Spaniard had been confident his Welsh midfielder would stay in north London

'Aaron is an important player for us, and the contract is one thing for the club and the player,' explained Emery

'For me, I want him to stay with us, to work with us, to give the team the big performance

I think he is going to stay here with us.'
