Is Year Round Schooling Better for Students and Teachers? - Duration: 7:28.

- For many American students and their families,

summer is sacrosanct, a nice long break from school,

to recharge and refresh.

But students in about four percent of public schools

attend on a year round schedule.

Supporters of the idea say they can stop a loss of learning

and boost achievement, especially for low income students,

who need school meals over the break.

Special correspondent Lisa Stark,

of our partner, Education Week, visited one such school

in Holt, Michigan.

It's part of our weekly segment, Making the Grade.

- So everybody get a little bit of space here,

just so they can get the proper grip, okay?

- It's the start of summer break

in Holt, Michigan, and tennis camp is in full swing,

one of a number of summer activities on tap

for middle schooler Lucia Frost,

who was ready for school to end.

You're on summer vacation.

- Yes, it was great.

- Does it feel good?

- Yes, finally.

(laughing)

- [Lisa] But for her younger sister, Kako,

class is still in session.

- Okay, your turn.

17 divided?

- By seven.

- [Lisa] Kako's school, Sycamore Elementary,

is one of two in this district

that uses a so-called year round, or balanced calendar.

There are no additional school days,

still around the typical 180,

but those days are divided up differently.

In a year round calendar,

summer vacation is shorter,

about half of the usual 10 to 12 weeks,

and there are one to two week breaks sprinkled

throughout the year.

So what would you say to kids who don't know

about the balanced calendar?

- I would tell them that it feels like

you can get more breaks, but you still learn

as much as you need to be educated.

- [Lisa] Mom Kelly Frost is a fan.

- I think it's nice for the kids.

They don't get burnt out during the school year,

and in the summer,

I think that by having the shortened summer,

I think they're still getting their freedom outside.

- [Lisa] Some 3700 schools in the US,

around four percent of schools, use a balanced calendar.

In some cases, it's to manage overcrowding,

to stagger schedules, so one school

can handle more students,

but at many schools, such as Sycamore,

the hope is to boost student achievement

with more consistent education.

- So what do you do with that number?

- [Lisa] Third grade teacher, Denise Schaffer.

- I think that it gives us continuity,

and over time, we can spread our learning out a little bit

and take things a little bit more deliberately.

- [Lisa] Long summers, though,

are part of the American culture,

and can be a magical time for some families.

Any attempt to change the school schedule

often causes an uproar.

Here's Harvard's Jennifer Davis.

- The current school calendar is so ingrained

in the American society and family life

that it's very hard to change.

(children squealing)

- [Lisa] Davis, though, believes this school schedule

is way out of date.

- Today's American school calendar was created

for a 19th century farm and factory economy,

and it hasn't kept pace with the needs

of our changing economy and with the needs of families

in today's world.

- [Lisa] Kelly Frost agrees.

- I think that the shorter summers are better for education.

I think the longer summers, they're out too long.

- [Lisa] Long summer breaks can be a time of learning loss,

known as the Summer Slide,

- especially for low income students,

who may not have the money for camps, classes,

or summer activities to keep their minds active.

Every summer, low income students lose about two months

in reading skills, while middle income students

hold their own.

In math, most students, regardless of income,

lose some math skills.

Matthew Boulay heads

the National Summer Learning Association.

- The real problem with summer learning loss

is not simply what happens over one summer,

but it's the problem of loss

summer after summer after summer.

- [Child] Oh, use the black.

- [Lisa] Sycamore Elementary hopes to reduce that loss

with the balanced calendar.

It's the district's highest poverty school.

Over half the students qualify for free

or reduced price lunch.

- If we do school the way we've always done school,

we're gonna get the result we always have.

So by changing the calendar,

that's one thing that we can modify

to potentially make a difference.

- [Lisa] The district superintendent,

David Hornak, also heads up

the National Association for Year-Round Education.

He admits this schedule can be a tough sell.

Opponents argue teachers and students

lose out on summer jobs.

- But if you're a lefty, you'll be facing this way.

- [Lisa] For parents, it may be hard to find childcare

during school breaks.

Coaches worry about scheduling high school sports,

and for schools, summer air conditioning can be costly.

Hornak understands these concerns,

but insists a balanced calendar just makes sense.

- I think that that is something

we should take a longer look at.

We're spending millions and millions of dollars

nationwide, remediating the gaps

that the tradition calendar, in fact, creates.

- [Lisa] At Sycamore, internal measures show students here

are not losing ground during the summer break.

Principal Steve Garrison says,

"You can see the difference,

"when students return after the short summer vacation."

- We don't have a long six to eight weeks,

of trying to get kids caught up.

We start right off, second week, instruction starts,

after our routines are set.

- Despite the enthusiasm here for the year round schedule,

the data on its effectiveness are quite mixed.

It is not clear that a balanced calendar

really helps students retain more information,

or improves test scores.

A 2015 study found that year round students

do pull ahead during the summer,

but students on a traditional nine month calendar

catch up and pull ahead during the rest of the year.

Study author, Paul Von Hippel.

- Well, it's basically the same 175, 180 days

spread out differently across the year,

and since total instruction time doesn't increase,

total learning doesn't increase, either.

- [Lisa] Sycamore has tried to add learning time

to offering voluntary academics and activities

during school breaks,

but some researchers argue it's easier

to boost instruction time without tossing out

the traditional calendar,

by simply extending school hours, adding extra days,

and offering summer school.

- [Denise Schaffer] So let's count by sevens, ready?

- [Lisa] Still, at Sycamore, they're convinced.

The year round schedule is what is best

for students and teachers.

- I love having shorter breaks more frequently.

I really feel that it's better for my level of energy

and enthusiasm for teaching.

- [Lisa] Those regular breaks are a big hit

with Kako, too.

- I really wanna stay in the balanced calendar.

- [Lisa] Why?

- Because it just makes me, well, happy.

- [Lisa] So Kako's just fine waiting for her summer vacation

even as her sister is already off and running.

From the PBS New Hour, and Education Week, I'm Lisa Stark,

in Holt, Michigan.

Sadhguru - Shutting your mouth is not enough. - Duration: 3:57.

Sadhguru: So the process of what you call as spiritual is not a psychological

process.

Your memory has nothing to do with it.

It's a life process; it's an existential process.

This can only happen if you allow yourself to be just a piece of

life that you are.

To do this, we do many things here and, you know,

you might have seen people in the ashram walking around with those orange tags.

If you have seen the silence tags people are wearing

just shut up.

Because, shutting your mouth is only half the job;

to become silent is possible

only when you do not think much of yourself.

If you think something about yourself, if you think 'I am smart'

how can you shut up? you tell me

If you think 'I am smart' how can you shut up?

If you realize that you are actually stupid, you don't know anything in this existence

then isn't it?

Then you can simply look at life with great sense of wonder,

without a thought appearing in your mind.

If you think you are smart about everything, you got explanations and calculations and

nonsense going on in your head.

If you see one thing, a thousand thoughts will go off, isn't it?

You are not sitting here in this sathsang totally silent;

you are agreeing with me, disagreeing with me,

making comments within yourself, making comments about the clothes that somebody

is wearing next to you, appreciating it,

depreciating it, everything is happening.

Am I wrong?

Because the moment you think there is some value to what you think

then you can't stop it; no way to stop it.

It'll just go on and on and on.

When you see there is absolutely no life value to your thought process;

it is just memory recycling itself, it is just the same old nonsense recycling

itself but if you are excited,

if you are enamored by this recycle, if you think it's great you cannot stop it.

If you see the patterns of what it is, if you see the stupidity of what it is,

then slowly you will distance yourself and it'll collapse

because without attention it cannot

go on.

Justin Hartley Teases Season 3 of 'This Is Us:' "You're Going to Be Blown Away" | In Studio with THR - Duration: 8:11.

- Thank you so much for watching.

Right now we're reunited with Justin Hartley.

- Yes.

- Reunited and it feels ...

- So good. - So good.

- I can finally breathe again.

- You can breathe again.

How have you been, how's life?

I know you did a - Good.

- little bit of traveling.

- Did a little traveling, yeah, went to Maui.

Took my honeymoon finally, so that was good.

Just got back from Alaska not too long ago.

Went back to Chicago, visited some family and friends.

So I've been kinda traveling quite a bit.

- Now since we've last talked and I mean, I guess

for a while now everyone has been talking about

your story line last season and giving you so much praise.

What is that feedback like as an actor

and what does it mean to you to be able

to have portrayed Kevin's story line

last season like that?

- Thanks man.

- I mean it, like serious-

- Oh, thank you, thank you.

No, it's, obviously it's great you know and

I pour, well we all do, but I poured so much into that.

It's a huge effort, it's a huge undertaking

not just by me but by the entire crew.

- Yeah.

- My castmates, the writing staff, and so to get praise

on something that I feel like was a really difficult

storyline to pull off and I feel like we pulled it off

in a very respectful, real, honest way.

That feels good because it's such an important thing

that people, great people are dealing with

all over the world that I just wanted to make sure

we all wanted to make sure that it was done in a way

that was respectful of that but also very honest and true.

Which meant sort of, digging in and getting dirty

and we did that and I'm very proud of what we did.

So to get the praise and the feedback

it definitely means a lot.

- Awesome, now I mean it's a pretty emotional story.

I mean, what part of it impacted you the most personally?

Was there an aspect to it that...

- Man, all of it.

You know you got this guy who, seemingly has it all, right?

Gosh, when we find him, he seems like this surface guy

that just cares about fast cars and fast women

and big houses and popularity and money

and who likes me and what kind of clothes I'm wearing.

And then, as the story goes on you realize

that prejudgment that you had about this guy

has lead in a part to the very hole that he's in.

He's surrounded by people that are staring at him,

praising him, telling him how great he is

and yet he's in that room, completely and totally alone,

on an island, with no one to talk to

and it's the saddest thing I could possibly imagine

so that's sort of how I approached it.

And I think we needed the first season

to sort of tell that story to be able to go

oh okay, well, man, I saw him a certain way

and that's kind of what he's talking about.

- Yeah, now you've been acting for years.

What has landing this role, being a part of "This Is Us"

meant to you as an actor, has it changed your life?

- Yeah, it's everything, I mean, I'm not, I'll be totally

honest with you it's changed everything.

You dream as an, at least I do, I did

as an actor you dream to have a moment where you can

like they say, sink your teeth into something

and really challenge yourself and you like to believe

that if you were handed that challenge that you'd be

up for it but until you are, you never really know, right?

Until you actually are in it, and so yeah

it's changed everything, it's great.

It's wonderful to be able to do something

that I always thought that I could do.

To be actually given the opportunity to do it is,

it's nothing short of a dream honestly.

- Awesome, now let's play a game.

- I love games.

- Are you down for a game?

- What kind of game?

- I invented this game.

- (laughing) I love it already, what is it?

How hard can it be? - A lot can happen.

- Oh God.

- So I recently perused the internet to gather

some random facts about your co-stars.

- Oh God.

- So I wanna see if you can guess.

- Okay, no, I

- A guessing game kind of.

- Okay good, let's, you invented.

- I invented this.

- You invented the guessing game.

- The guessing game.

- Okay, alright, I didn't know that.

- Let's start.

- I feel like you're lying - These are random facts

off the internet and so they might not even be true but

- I think it was invented way before we're playing right now

but, okay, okay. - This is the first time ever.

- Agree to disagree.

- Which one of your co-stars was

discovered by a FedEx employee?

- Which one of my co-stars was discovered by

a FedEx employee, that would be Ms. Mandy Moore.

- Oh you know that?

- No, I didn't know that, am I right?

- Yeah, yeah, how did you guess that?

- Boom, see how confident-

- Why did you think her?

- Because I, that just seems like something

that would happen to her. - Would happen to her.

- Yeah, it seems like she would be walking her dog

or doing anything really and some FedEx guy

or even UPS would be like, excuse me, I think you should be

- I heard you were - a movie star.

- discovered by UPS actually.

- No, I was, I was not.

It was the water guy, yeah, no,

- He saw you.

- I haven't been discovered yet.

You know after you're done inventing games

you can discover me - Discover you.

- and then you can just keep-

- Let's do it, I can't wait

- Which one of your co-stars recently had lunch with Oprah?

- I feel like I'm the only one that didn't,

actually. - Was it all of them?

- Well, yeah I know, are you talking about Chrissy?

Or are you talking about Sterling?

You're probably talking about Chrissy?

- Chrissy. - Yeah.

- Chrissy was more recently I think.

- Okay, alright, still waiting for my phone call.

- Which one of your co-stars used to dress up as Madonna?

- Which one of my co-stars used to dress up like Madonna?

That would probably be, Chrissy?

- Nope.

- Was it Sterling?

- Nope.

- Was it Milo?

- Yeah.

- (laughing) Oh he hasn't changed a bit.

- It's really interesting. - I know that he does that now

I didn't know that he did that way back.

- He still does it, right?

- Yeah, yeah, yeah we both do.

- Fun stuff, you do? - Yeah yeah.

- Alright, which one of your co-stars grew up in Japan?

- Grew up in Japan?

- Yeah.

- One of them grew up in Japan?

- This is off the internet I just pulled

(mumbles) I think it's right.

For like, their formative years is what it said online.

- Oh, would that be Milo?

- No.

- Oh, would it be Chrissy?

- It was Chrissy, yeah.

- Okay, maybe that rings a bell.

- Who was born in the same hospital

as their significant other?

- Sterling.

- Yep.

- Isn't that amazing?

- That was a cool story.

- Yeah, it's a great story.

- Last one, who starred in "The Princess Diaries"?

- I feel like I'm doing pretty good at this.

- Yeah, you're pretty good.

- "Princess Diaries," who starred in "The Princess Diaries"?

- If you've ever seen "The Princess Diaries"

this is a big deal.

- Who starred in "The Princess Diaries," Mandy?

- Yeah.

- Yes.

- She was like the villain.

- I feel, really?

- Yeah.

- I feel like I got like a B plus or an A.

- I think you got most of them right.

- That's what happens.

- That's exactly what I'm

- This is me getting discovered.

- Now last, last question.

- Uh huh.

- What's a random fact about you

that no one knows about that...

- (sigh) I feel like I've told everybody everything

at this point, yeah I don't know if I have any random facts.

- Just make one up.

- Yeah, uh, gosh, gosh I don't know, you know.

I'm not 6'4", people think I'm 6'4", I'm 6'2".

There's a random fact for you.

- I've never heard of that, correct your image.

- I'm inventing boredom, yeah, making

people bored by listening to me.

- What do you want to say to viewers before we go?

- Oh, thank you, I get a chance to talk to the viewers.

- Yeah.

- Okay, gosh, so first of all thank you, for embracing

the show, thank you for watching, thank you for continuing

to watch and to have all of those emotions that we asked

that you have every week, I know it's a lot to ask.

But we really appreciate it, thank you for the job

and going forward, I can't wait to show you season three.

I think you're going to be blown away, it's our biggest,

best, that sounds so cliche but it's true.

- Have you got the scripts yet? Like a new teaser?

- No, I've just gotten like a download

of the outline of the season, so it's pretty amazing so

- Ron Howard movie - thank you for everything.

- that's coming out.

- Yeah, what do you mean?

- You're in it, you're in it.

- Yeah, in season three, yeah, a fake Ron Howard.

- It's gonna be awesome.

- Yeah.

- Awesome, thank you guys.

- Thank you.

Botox, are you kidding me? This is cheese | Debra DiGiovanni - Duration: 2:40.

I look younger than I am. If I told you my

real age you'd say, "Debra, you don't look that old".

The only reason I look young though is 'cause I'm fat.

I'm serious. It fills in the lines.

People with Botox, are you stupid?

This is cheese, are you kidding me?

Dairy products, you idiots.

Look at this, I'm a cherub. Look at this face, are you kidding?

I'm going to die soon but I'm gonna look good though,

you know what I mean? "Did she die as a baby?"

Anyway, here's the thing,

I look young, but I have the wisdom of an old woman.

I'll tell you something right now. Do you have a day job?

Do you have to go somewhere tomorrow?

Do you hate your day job? Let me tell you this.

You want to pass time at a day job,

find someone to hate at the office.

Nothing passes time like hating someone at the office.

She walks by, you're like, "Look at that bitch. Is it 4?

Is it 4?" The day is done.

One more coffee, you're out of there everybody, understand?

That's a good idea. Write that down.

Here's something else that I'll tell you.

I don't know if you know this but it's true. This is science.

Hot girls get free coffee, did you know that?

I was at Starbucks the other day.

Pretty girl ordered a $17,000 cup of coffee.

She got it for free.

I ordered a drip coffee, 2 dollars and 30 cents,

I had to pay for it. I was like, "I don't think so".

So I go home and I need vengeance and I need it now.

I'm like, "Well, I have to take down Starbucks".

I'm going to take them down myself." So what I do to get

revenge, what do we do as Canadians to get vengeance?

I wrote a strongly-worded letter. Yes I did;

all capitals, lots of exclamation points.

I didn't send it that would be too aggressive.

I'll tell you this. I saw a fabulous news story.

Do you remember this one guys?

This happened a couple years ago.

It's my favourite of all time. No one is going to beat this.

No news story is going to beat this in my world.

Do you remember years ago when there was a female astronaut,

do you remember this? And her boyfriend or husband

broke up with her? Do you remember?

And she went crazy and she drove across the country and to get

her man back she wore an adult diaper.

She put a diaper on and she was like, "I'm getting my man".

That is crazy as hell. That is crazy and impressive,

kind of impressive, let's be honest.

I mean have you ever loved anyone that much?

That's commitment. "How much do you love me?

Would you wear an adult diaper across state lines?" "Depends".

Anyway, oh, that was a trick.

That was a bad one.

You guys, thank you so much, everyone.

We'll see you again. Goodnight. Goodbye.

(applause and cheering)

Is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-Rajkummar Rao's pairing in Fanney Khan a weird combo? - Duration: 5:33.

Is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-Rajkummar Rao's pairing in Fanney Khan a weird combo?

Is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-Rajkummar Rao's pairing in Fanney Khan a weird combo? Acting is the 'art of giving' for him and Rajkummar Rao says he would not be truthful to this belief if insecurities overpower him as a performer.

Rao is the man of the moment in Bollywood with back-to-back projects and while he calls his routine "hectic", he is not complaining.

Acting is the 'art of giving' for him and Rajkummar Rao says he would not be truthful to this belief if insecurities overpower him as a performer.

Rao is the man of the moment in Bollywood with back-to-back projects and while he calls his routine "hectic", he is not complaining. "I always feel secure.

I can't be a pure actor if I feel insecure. I can't let other things take over my love for acting. For me its a giving art. It is not something which I am doing for myself.

I am doing it for my co-actors unless it is something like 'Trapped'. Acting for me is giving to your co-actors," Rao told PTI in an interview.

Not insecurities, but nervousness does trouble the 33-year-old actor at times. "There are times when I do feel very nervous when I start a film.

And I feel very nervous before the release. I do get stuck in some scenes but that's very natural and human. It happens to all the artists in the world," he adds.

Rao believes the change in the definition of a "hero" in Hindi cinema has opened a lot of avenues for actors like him and he credits writers, new age directors and audiences for this shift.

"They are the ones who are writing such characters and audiences are interested in watching them. People are falling in love with characters now and that is why writers are creating such stories.

I am really happy that such stories are getting prominence. "That is the reason why actors like me are getting the chances to portray great characters on-screen.

I think it's the relatability factor which works between me and the audiences. I am one of them. They connect with me as they see a part of them in me," he says.

The actor is currently one of the busiest stars in the film industry with films like 'Fanney Khan', 'Stree', '5 Weddings', 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga' in his kitty, but he does not mind switching from one set to the other.

But as long as I am enjoying what I am doing and I am getting different parts to play I have no complains. It is definitely manageable and practically possible.

I am getting the chance to work on some amazing stories and I will keep doing it.

"People like Anil sir (Anil Kapoor), Amit ji (Amitabh Bachchan) inspire me to keep moving forward and apart from that, the fact that I love my job as an actor keeps pushing me ahead. I never had a plan B.

I honestly wanted to be an actor and dedicate my life to movies," Rao says. The actor is excited about his upcoming film, 'Fanney Khan', which also features Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Pihu Sand and Divya Dutta.

Rao says the film, directed by debutant Atul Manjrekar, is an important story which needs to be told. "It is a great story and I loved my part.

It was very exciting to work with Anil sir and Aishwarya. It was a fascinating experience. "My whole romantic side with Aishwarya was really fun. My character is in awe of her in the film.

And I am in awe of her in real-life. It was a very weird combination." The film has been produced by T-Series, Anil Kapoor Films & Communications Network and Rakeys Omprakash Mehra Pictures. It will be released on August 3.
