Hi this is Bevlyn rom SingingTechniques where you get tips and
insights into singing. I have an exciting announcement at the end of this video so
please stick around to catch it. So in this episode I will be talking about
falsetto, help you to identify the sound of falsetto by giving you examples of songs that have
falsetto, and most importantly help you to sing falsetto. Falsetto also means
false voice. Does that mean that everything else is real?
Believe me I used to not be able to sing any Falsetto at all and it was
embarrassing because falsetto is used very commonly in pop songs and because I
can't sing falsetto for those parts of the song, I would try to lower the key or
I would try to use my head voice to squeeze my voice up or worse, to pull my
chest voice up like this instead of ah
if you don't know how to sing falsetto you are missing out on a stylistic way of
singing. Some writers write falsetto, OR singers interpret certain parts of
the songs using falsetto to release pent-up emotions that were built up
Nobody will sing a whole song in falsetto, not even half a song, because it
can be exhausting and it's just too much air escaping through your vocal cords
when you're singing falsetto, and it can be difficult to maintain good pitching
if you sing a very very long line. In singing, you want to play
the game of releasing as little air as possible.
Most people will tend to produce falsetto even when they don't want to
For example instead of singing (scale), people will sing (scale). Did you hear the flip? Here are
couple songs for you to recognize the sound of falsetto in the context of songs
  (Angel by Sarah McClachan)
"of your silent reverie". "I'll take care of you" For top forties these days everybody
adores male singers who can sing really really high but I just want to assure
all the male singers out there that, no, these pop singers they don't just use
their head voices or chest voices to sing the high notes. They actually use a lot
of falsetto as well to work it into the song. Aesthetically it's really nice but
it also helps to make the singing of the song much easier. So how do you sing falsetto?
First of all, sigh using a high pitch. Now stretch it.
That's falsetto. When you are happy say wooohoooo. So make sure it's high-pitched
don't say 'oh-ho;. Nobody does that
And one of my favourite bands actually enrolled it into a song
whoo-hoo. That's falsetto. In Singapore we have an actor producer Jack Neo, who
used to personate and old lady
That's falsetto. In the British comedy "Little Britain" we have Emily Howard
these coins are so heavy of course you wouldn't notice being a
man who ever knows what that is like I do not how could i? I'm a lady. I'm a lady. Men
you shall feel like you are a lady. Say your name hi my name is Bevlyn and I'm
  a lady. Say i......
Hold on to that feeling of singing and just sing any song for example 'twinkle
twinkle little star how I wonder what you are'
A lot of women may find that this is how they actually sing songs, especially if
you are not comfortable singing and you seldom actually sing out loud, so when
you are a bit inhibited, this is usually how you might sing. Cuz we were just
kids when we fell in love
  Not knowing what it was
And that's very tiring. Also women it may be a bit difficult for you to
distinguish what is the head voice and what is the falsetto for now but just
hang on with me here. Practice the sensation of singing falsetto. Train your
ears to recognize the sound of falsetto, and you will soon recognize which is the
falsetto and which is the breathy head voice. Confused? Don't worry okay so
here's a demonstration of me alternating between head voice and falsetto.
  Let's try a higher note.
Try it. if you want to know the science behind it ,when we sing in head voice, our
vocal cords actually close very tightly so air doesn't gush out as much. When we
sing falsetto, the vocal cords don't touch each other
and that's why you feel a sensation of more air through your tone .However
having said that it is possible to not have too much air gushing out when you
sing falsetto because when there's too much air gushing out it becomes a bad
singing habit. Remember the game of singing? And remember that you may feel
it softer when you sing in falsetto. That's normal. You have to make sure that
your neck your throat your facial expressions are relaxed. So join me in
this exercise and check if you can sustain singing falsetto for a long time.
Okay I'm going to leave you with two songs for you to practice and I really
hope that you can master falsetto because the ability to sing falsetto
actually allows you to style better and to give more colors to a song. You don't
