Hey there Kirsten here. and welcome to Part 1 of my mini-series. How Accessible
is Disney World. And today we are gonna be talking about Hollywood studios. For
the past six or seven years I've been writing a series over on my blog called
How Accessible Is It? And basically these are posts that detail different places
that I've gone, or experiences that I've had, and I talk about how accessible
they are based on my perspective in a wheelchair. This year we, for the first
time ever have Disney annual passes. And I am very excited and very happy about
it, because that means we can go to Disney whenever we want to. And I figured
that now is as good a time as any to finally make this series. I'll be talking
about Disney World specifically and breaking them down into
the different parks. Okay, so I just want to preface this by saying that everybody
has different accessibility needs. Some people may be in a wheelchair but able
to transfer, some people may be able to walk short distances, some people may
have to remain in their wheelchair. And then there are other accessibility needs
as well, whether you are hearing impaired or vision impaired. So these videos will
be based on my perspective, my experiences, being a full time wheelchair
user who cannot transfer at all. So every every activity that I do I have to
always remain in my wheelchair. So all that being said it is time to finally
jump into this video, and I am going to be starting out with Disney Hollywood
Studios. I would say out of the four parks this is my least favorite park. Overall
it's the least accessible of the four parks. So I'm going to be breaking it
down into three categories. First of all we're gonna go over all of
the rides that are accessible. I'm only going to talk about the rides that I as
a full time wheelchair user who cannot transfer, can go on. And then I'm going to
talk about the outside environment, like getting around and all of those
accessibility topics. And then finally I'm going to grade it based on my overall
experience at the park. I'm going to just go down the line and talk about all of
the different rides that are wheelchair accessible. So when you first walk in
it's Hollywood Boulevard, and basically that's just shops and restaurants. Then
you get to a place called Echo Lake, and that is pretty much where a bulk of the
shows are. The first show is the Frozen sing-along, "For the First Time in Forever."
You go and you just sit in a theater and you watch a live-action show and it has
singing and stuff like that. It is completely accessible, you sit in the
back row, which is perfect for me. I love sitting in the back row of theaters. I
don't like it when the wheelchair seating is in the very front row and you
have to look up at the stage. Not my favorite thing. By the way if you love
Frozen as much as I do, and can sing the songs forward and backwards and upside
down -- just kidding I can't really sing them upside down -- I highly recommend the
show it is hilarious and of course getting to sing along with those great
songs. Then there is the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular show, and basically it
is outdoors in like an amphitheater thing. You are sitting in a theater
watching a live-action show and the wheelchair seating is in the back. And
there's not much else to say other than it is just a live-action show. And I do
have to say that there are loud noises, gunshots, things like that. So if you are
sensitive to those things, like I am, I'm just giving you a warning. Then there is
another show called Star Wars: Path of the Jedi, and it's a show in a theater but it's
actually like a movie that you watch on a screen. So it's just basically the
history of Star Wars. Then we move on to the next area which is Grand Avenue, and
in there you will find the Muppet-Vision 3D movie. And you basically, again, you sit
in a theater and you watch a movie with 3D glasses, and there are also like
animatronic muppets around the front of the theater. The wheelchair seating is in
the back of the theater. Okay so the next area is called Pixar Place, and in June
2018 it will be expanding to Toy Story Land, which I'll talk about that in a
minute. The only ride that is in Pixar Place is the Toy Story Mania ride and
basically you're sitting in a cart as you go you play different midway-type
games. And this is actually the only ride in Hollywood Studios that is wheelchair
accessible. I just want to give a little warning that it does spin you around
quite fast, like it it spins one way and then it'll spin the other way. It's a lot
of fun. but be warned if you don't have a whole lot of upper body control or upper
body strength. I would suggest either trying to get a
fast pass or getting there as early as possible, because it does get busy very
fast and it stays busy throughout the rest of the day.
So in June 2018 Pixar Place will be expanding with Toy Story Land, which is
going to be an entire area based on the movie Toy Story, and there will be two
brand new rides, as well as a couple of other things. And I will link the full
article to that below where you can get a more in-depth look at what exactly Toy
Story Land will be. There will be two new rides and neither one of them will be
wheelchair accessible. One of them is a rollercoaster and
the other is kind of like a saucer-type ride. You will have to be able to transfer
and walk onto the ride. It is kind of a disappointment that neither one of those
rides will be wheelchair accessible. They had a great opportunity, they're brand
new rides that they could have been a little bit more inclusive with. All right
so the next area is the Animation Courtyard and there's a show called Voyage
of the Little Mermaid. Which is, again, you sit in a theater and it's a live show.
There's also a Disney Jr. show and that is also accessible. It's just a theater
and a live show on a stage. All right moving on to Sunset Boulevard, and this
next thing is probably my second favorite thing to do whenever we go to
Hollywood Studios, and that is the Beauty and the Beast live show. And basically
this show takes place in an amphitheater it is like outside, but it's covered, and
there is wheelchair seating in the back and down in the front. Beauty and
the Beast is my favorite Disney movie, so I love seeing the show every time I go,
no matter how many times I've seen it I still love it. And that is all for the
rides and attractions that are one hundred percent wheelchair accessible. Okay so
moving on to environment. How easily is it to get around? I would say that out of
the four parks, Hollywood studios definitely has the most ideal terrain.
It's pretty much all smooth, paved walkways. There are like curbs, but
there's curb cuts at each corner. As far as maneuverability, I would say Disney's
biggest issue is their stores, whether there are a lot of people in them or not,
they are very tight squeezes to get around. And the restaurants as
well, because they try and cram so many tables and chairs in their restaurants
that it just it's very difficult to get through
the maze that is created. Let's move on to the final grade. I have come up with
this grade based on overall experience as well as accessibility. My grading
scale is one to five wheelchairs. So one wheelchair being, "definitely not
accessible, I would not recommend." And five wheelchairs would be, "completely
one hundred percent accessible, I would highly recommend, it was an amazing experience." Based on
that scale I would give Hollywood Studios, two and a half out of five
wheelchairs. It's pretty much 50/50. You-- even though there's only one accessible
ride there are a ton of shows. I just want to reiterate everything that I have
said in this video is based on my personal perspective. If you would like
to see my perspective at Disney Hollywood Studios, I have a vlog from one
of those days and you can find it linked up here in the iCard and in the
description box below. If you like this video please give it a thumbs up and if
you want to see more be sure to subscribe. If you have any questions or
comments please don't hesitate to leave those I will try to answer them to the
best of my ability. Thank you so much for watching, and I'll see you next time! Bye!
